Church Council is for Everyone

Now all of you together are Christ’s body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it.

(1 Corinthians 12:27,TLB)

Our annual Church Council is one of the most important meetings of our church family. It is an event that every able-bodied member of Friedberg should attend—for as the scripture says, all of us together make up this church body and each one of us is needed in order for the body to function properly.

This year Church Council will come immediately after the close of a shortened worship service on Sunday, November 17th.

At Church Council we do things like:

• Give thanks to God for all He has enabled us to accomplish in 2019 and ask for His direction and blessing regarding things He is calling us to do in 2020.

• Give our new members and others who have not yet signed The Moravian Covenant for Christian Living an opportunity to do so.

• Receive the 2020 church budget.

• Elect people to various positions of servant-leadership in the church (our Nominating Committee has put together an excellent slate of candidates which you’ll find listed on another page of this newsletter).

• Hear reports from some of our ministry groups (e.g. Women’s Fellowship and our Preschool).

• Open the floor for any communicant member in good standing to address the Church Council with any joys or concerns or a motion for consideration.

These are matters of vital interest to every member of our church. We will be making decisions that shape the future of our congregation’s life, mission and ministry for years to come. Your careful and prayerful participation is needed. The Holy Spirit works through all of us together to ensure the spiritual welfare and successful ministry of our church.

What Do Our Boards Do?

… someone who wants to be an overseer desires an honorable responsibility. (1 Timothy 3:1)

Have you ever wondered what the Board of Elders does, how the Trustees spend their meeting time, or

what are the responsibilities of the Board of Christian Education? With Church Council just a few weeks away we thought it would be helpful to give you an overview of the structure and duties of each of these three important church boards here at Friedberg: Elders, Trustees, and Christian Education. As you read through the descriptions of each of the boards below and take note of the duties they fulfill within the church you’ll see that each board serves a particular and vital purpose in the life and ministry of our congregation. Therefore, each person elected to a position of servant-leadership on one of these boards accepts tremendous responsibilities. They are to be commended for their willingness to serve and supported with prayer, words of encouragement and our active participation (time, talents, and treasure) in the life and ministry of the church. Please consider the descriptions below as you prepare to elect members to serve on these boards when we gather for Church Council on November 18th. A list of nominees for election to these boards and other positions of servant leadership can be found on the next page of the newsletter.

Board of Elders

The Board of Elders consists of 12 elected members plus the pastor(s). The Senior Pastor serves as the Chairman of the Board. Members of the Board serve for a three year term, may be elected to two consecutive terms, and must be at least 18 years of age and a member in good standing. The Elders also have a Vice Chair and a Secretary. The duties of the Board of Elders: to watch over the spiritual and moral well-being of the congregation; to schedule services and help to encourage attendance; to approve use of the church buildings; to implement church discipline; to approve all names of new members; to appoint the acolytes, organist, choir director, music committee and all other officers or committees necessary to carry on the worship services, except head diener and head usher; to take a special interest in the children and youth of the congregation and to work with the Christian Education Board in providing for their Christian growth and nurture.

Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees consists of 12 elected members plus the Church Treasurer who is a non-voting member. Members of the Board serve for a three year term, may be elected to two consecutive

terms, must be at least 18 years of age, and a member in good standing. The Trustees have a Chairman, a Vice-Chairman and a Secretary. The treasurer reports directly to the Board of Trustees, provides a monthly report and disburses monies at the direction of the Board. The duties of the Board of Trustees: to watch over the physical and financial well-being of the congregation; to plan the annual budget; to create a plan for raising money to meet the budget and other financial needs of the congregation; to maintain all property; to determine the salary of all paid workers including the Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor, Director of Youth Ministry, Director of Children’s Ministry, Caretaker, Church Secretary, Church Treasurer, and Music Director (Organist, Senior Choir Director, Cherub & Junior Choir Director, and Hand Bell Director); to appoint a Graveyard Committee, Caretaker Committee and other committees to oversee the physical needs of the church; to oversee special funds of the congregation; and to excuse a member from making contributions to the church given sufficient reason.

Board of Christian Education

The Board of Christian Education consists of nine elected members plus the Associate Pastor, Director of Children’s Ministry, and Director of Youth Ministry who are non-voting members. Members of the Board serve for a three year term and may be elected to two consecutive terms. The C.E. Board also has a Chairman and Secretary. The duties of the Board of Christian Education: to provide Sunday School curriculum for preschool, children, youth, and adult classes; to implement the Provincial Safe Sanctuary Policy; to support Sunday school teachers through training and appreciation; to help with educational activities for preschool, children, youth and adults (e.g. Vacation Bible School, Christmas Program, church library, etc.); to find and train volunteers for the nurseries; and to support the Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor, Director of Youth Ministry, and Director of Children’s Ministry with their various educational programs.

Not all will be elected, but all are worthy of our prayerful consideration and our thanks for their willingness to be used by God. During Church Council there will be an opportunity for additional candidates to be nominated from the floor. If you plan to nominate someone, please make sure you have talked to the person beforehand and they agree to be nominated.

Invite your family, friends, neighbors,

classmates and co-workers. Ask them to join us for this special service of worship as we give thanks to God for the gift of salvation that is ours in Christ Jesus and praise Him for all the blessings we enjoy as citizens of this great land. Each worshipper will receive a lightly sweetened lovefeast bun and a cup of Moravian coffee

sweetened generously with sugar and milk. There will be a wonderful band prelude, hymns of faith sung by the congregation, beautiful music from our hand bell choir, glorious songs of praise from the Friedberg choir and a special Thanksgiving sermon from Pastor Jim.

Bring canned goods and non-perishable grocery items for

Sunnyside Ministry.

Before worship a vehicle will be parked in front of the sanctuary to receive donations of canned goods and other non-perishable grocery items which will be donated to Sunnyside Ministry in Winston-Salem.

A love offering will be received.

100% of the money you give will be passed on to ministries and helping agencies in our community for distribution to people in need.

Volunteers are needed in the kitchen to help prepare

for our Fall Supper on Friday, November 1 at 8:00 a.m.

We will begin with a light breakfast and then begin

kitchen and food preparations. No experience is

necessary and everyone is welcome and needed in

completing this tradition for the 102nd Fall Supper at

Friedberg.

The response for sponsoring a bag of new clothes for

the Ebenezer Christian Children’s Home

on Sunday, October 20 was amazing. If

you picked up a bag to fill after worship

that morning, please return the filled

bag to the area outside of Heidi

Everhart’s office by November 10. There will also be a

collection bin for gently used children’s clothing. If you

did not pick up one of these bags and still want to

support these children, you can do so by donating

money which will be used for tuition to summer camp at

Laurel Ridge. Donations should be designated

“Moravian Day of Service”. Ebenezer Christian

Children’s Home is a home for children in the foster

system. The home is located in North Wilkesboro and

currently has children from under 1 to 18 years old. For

the past two years members of our church family have

met some of these children that were able to attend

Laurel Ridge and everyone received a blessing!

our last directory and for anyone that just wants a new

picture since the last directory. Everyone that has their

picture made will receive a FREE 8X10. If you wish to

order any additional pictures, they will be back before

Christmas. Everyone in the current directory and those

that have their picture made will also receive a free

directory. The dates to have your picture made are

November 20-November 23, November 25 and

November 29-30. You can sign up for a photo time on

the church’s website, on our Facebook page or by

calling the church office (336-764-1830). You can also

sign up on Sunday mornings before Sunday School in

the church office or after worship in the church parlor.

We want all of our church family to be a part of this

Updated Directory, so please sign up!!! If you have had a

change of address or a change in your phone number,

please call the church office to update your information.

The Blessing Box is now

open!! Circle 4 requests the help of our

church family at Friedberg to help us

keep it filled for anyone in the

community that will need it. Boxes will

be placed in the church for you to

donate as you can. When you go to the grocery store, if

you could pick up an extra item or two occasionally, this

will help us be an outreach to the community. You can

also put a few things directly in the box if you like. At this

time, we are recommending non- perishables to make

any meal, snacks, single serve items, and hygiene

products. Shampoo and the extra makeup donated were

the first items to go. We will also try to offer seasonal

items as appropriate, to include mittens and hats, socks,

Thanksgiving and Christmas foods, etc. Bibles and small

items that would introduce Jesus to others like old

Sunday school books or inspirational books can be

included. This is new for us and we are not sure what to

expect. We welcome your suggestions, support and

prayers as we try to help and share Jesus with our

neighbors. Circle 4 would like to thank everyone who

has donated to the blessing box so far. We would also

like to thank Jerry Tolley and the West's for their

assistance in getting the box installed. If you have any

The Mission Society Lovefeast is

November 3 at 3:00 p.m. at Christ

Moravian Church. There is a band

prelude at 2:30 p.m. The speakers will be

Michael and Cecilia Tesh and they will be

giving updates from Ray of Hope

Orphanage in Kenya. Special music will

be provided by the Christ Chancel Choir directed by

Jeanie Rothrock, the Provincial Praise Group directed by

Bishop Sam Gray and the Provincial Band directed by

Carol Johnson

Join the men of Friedberg for their

Hardy Harvest Huddle on Saturday,

November 9 at 5:30 p.m. All men are

invited to join together for a Game &

Game night. First we will enjoy a meal together of wild

games and side dishes. There will be several choices

prepared by our own members. Then we will have a

short time of announcements and watch a football game

on the big screen. There is a sign up announcement in

the bulletin or you can call the church office to sign up

for this event.

of the Chief Elder Festival of the Moravian

Church. This festival commemorates the

decision of Moravian leaders in the year

1741 that Jesus Christ alone is the Master, Head and

Chief Elder of the Church

You are invited to an (almost) Authentic “Norsk

Lunsj Fest (Norwegian Lunch Feast) on Sunday,

November 10 immediately following

worship. This lunch is a fundraiser for the

two mission teams that will be traveling to

Honduras in January/February 2020. The

menu (recipes from Chef Pastor Dan’s recipe box) will

be Mashed Potetmos (mashed potatoes), Kålrabistappe

(rutabagas, carrots, butter and cheese), Kjøttboller og

saus (Norwegian meat balls and gravy) and Rugbrød

(rye bread). For dessert you will have your choice of

Sandbakelse (Norwegian sugar cookies topped with ice

cream and Lingonberries or Fattigmann (a Norwegian

fried dough cookie topped with confectioners’ sugar). A

love offering will be taken to support our mission teams.

The Thursday, November 14 meeting of Senior Friends

will be held in the DISCOVERY SUNDAY SCHOOL

CLASS ROOM located on the lower level of the

Education Building at 11:30 a.m. Our guest speaker will

be Phillip Bargoil, a Wake Forest University graduate

who received his US Army Commission after completing

the ROTC Program who later served in Berlin, Germany

and in Vietnam during the 1960's and was promoted to

Captain before leaving the military. Phillip is a member

of Clemmons Moravian Church and has shared his

experiences with many schools, churches, and

retirement homes. All veterans are encouraged to

Changes coming to the 2020 giving envelopes! There

will be changes in the appearance of the offering

envelopes for members that use

the envelopes provided by the

church for your tithes and

offerings, The envelopes

distributed for 2020 will be not

have a giving number or a printed

date. All giving units that are currently using envelopes

will be given 52 envelopes for 2020. If you have

envelopes left from 2019 (or previous years) please feel

free to use them. Since the envelopes will no longer

have a number, it will be very important to provide your

name on the envelope especially if you are giving cash.

Please call Sherri in the church office if you do not want

envelops in 2020. The 2020 envelopes will be available

in the hallway behind the sanctuary on December 15.

On November 28, we will celebrate Thanksgiving — a

day set aside to express gratitude. Every day can be

Thanksgiving because there are always

reasons to be thankful and to help others.

Listed below are opportunites to serve, to

pray and to give in November.

SERVE: In Eastern NC, Hurricane Dorian caused

additional flooding to areas damaged by last year’s

Hurricane Florence. The Covenant Moravian Church will

continue hosting teams interested in assisting with

rebuilding efforts. For more information about joining a

team or helping with funding check the BWM web page

at www.moravianmission.org. INTERESTED? Please

more details. PRAY: Please pray for our Moravian

brothers and sisters in Nicaragua as they gather for a

special synod November 5-8, 2019. The Nicaraguan

Province is working through a serious division in the

church which has resulted in severed relationships and

even some violence. We pray for reconciliation and a

renewed focus on mission. GIVE: The infant feeding

program in rural Honduras feeds approximately 100

children from the villages of Ahuas, Krupunta, and Barra

Paatuca. It costs roughly $1.00/day per child to supply

nutritious food for the child as well as educate the

mother in nutrition and preventative health. Donations

We will be hosting our annual fall workday on

November 9, 2019. Our normal schedule applies,

meaning we will plan to

meet at the Summer Camp

Dining Hall at 8:30 a.m.,

work until lunch (provided at

Higgins Lodge), and

complete our tasks in the

early afternoon. Our goals include a retaining wall, some

winterizing, painting inside, painting outside, minimal

drywall finishing, and general shut down of the Summer

Camp facilities. Any interested parties, please contact

Children’s Events

C.R.O.S.S Kids

Sunday, November 3, 17, and 24 from 4:30-7:00pm

C.R.O.S.S. Kids continues to count our blessing each time we meet! We look

forward to seeing the blessings that November brings to us. During our time

together we have dinner, devotions, praise and worship and participate in

some type of project. It is always a great evening together where we take

time to grow closer to God and each other!

November 3- On this night, we will focus on Relationships. We are going to be

working on several different types of crafts for the fall bazaar, our Veteran’s

Lunch as well as some special things for our college students. The Burchette

family will be providing a sandwich dinner for us on this night!

November 17-On this night, we will focus on Outreach. We will recap our trip to Ebenezer as well

as begin preparing some things for our trip back to Grayson Creek. The Matise family will be

providing a chicken nugget dinner for us on this night!

November 24-On this night, we will focus on Service. We will finish our projects for Grayson

Creek and will work on our Christmas Program that will be coming up in a couple of weeks. We

are still in need of a dinner provider and if you are interested, please let Heidi Everhart know!

VETERAN’S DAY BREAKFAST

Sunday, November 10 from 9:00-9:45 AM

This week we will not have C.R.O.S.S. Kids, but we will have a chance to

celebrate and honor our Veterans of Friedberg with a special breakfast before Sunday School.

We will serve breakfast, give recognition of each Veteran and have some fun with them.

FAMILY FELLOWSHIP

Ebenezer House-Saturday, November 16 time TBD

We are going to travel together to go spend time with the children and workers at Ebenezer.

Several of us from Junior Camp have had the opportunity to get

to know them and we want to spread some love and fun their

way. We will have a meal together, play games, and do some

different activities with them. It’s sure to be a blessing filled day!

SPOTLIGHT ON THE CHILDREN OF FRIEDBERG…

What C.R.O.S.S. Kids Means To Me- Lydia

Durham

Cross kids is the time we get to have fun while learning and hanging out. I enjoy the crafts we

do, like the bracelet. I like dinner time because we get to talk with my friends. I like the

outreach visits we take because we get to go new places and meet new people. When we go into

groups we meet new people and get to talk. My favorite time is drama because you get to be a

puppet, walk around, and play funny parts. I like storytime because the lessons are good and

sometimes funny. Best of all, we get to ask plenty of questions and have good times together.

We learn what the cross means to us and what it means to be a CROSS kid.

Friedberg Moravian Youth Mission Statement: FM youth will love one another as Christ loves us, we will learn about God, so we can use our gifts and talents for His purpose, and we will serve

others as an expression of Christ’s love and we will share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Youth Meetings for Grades 6th—12th Sundays 5:00—7:00

The youth meet regularly every Sunday from 5:00—7:00 to love, learn, serve and share fellowship with one another. The parents sponsor a meal, therefore come hungry and enjoy a wonderful

dinner at 5:00.

Fall Bazaar Craft Studio Sunday, November 3rd

5:00—8:00

On Sunday, November 3rd the youth will be making crafts to sell at the Fall Bazaar. The money raised at the Fall Bazaar will go toward helping families in need at Christmas. .

On Sunday, November 10th the youth will travel to New Philadelphia Moravian church to Square dance, in honor of helping “stock the shelves” at Sunnyside Ministries food pantry. The youth need to bring canned food, wear their boots and plaid shirt, for a night that’s sure to be fun and exciting.

On October 12, the youth’s Sonrise Café setup a booth at the Car, Truck and Tractor Show. Not only did we provide delicious drink’s and face painting to our customers, but raised enough money to support both the “FM Honduras” mission team and the “Students Helping

Honduras” team at ASU. The youth donated $100 to both of the mission teams.

FMC 21st Annual Youth Fall Bazaar

November 16th 8:00 AM—1:00 PM

On November 16th, the youth will be selling crafts, food, Moravian crystals, Moravian sweat-shirts, coffee, smoothies, wreaths, and handmade tables by the TAG construction team. This is a very important day for the youth, because not only are they selling what they’ve made, but helping families in need during the Holiday season.

Talents And Gifts (TAG) Sunday November 17th 5:00—7:00 PM

On November 17th, the youth will continue a new ministry: TAG. This ministry will equip youth to serve others by using their talents and gifts. 1 Peter 4:10 says: “As each has received

a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace”. As part of our mission statement we will learn what God’s purpose is through the strengthening of our talents and gifts. The youth will be divided into four groups: cooking, construction, mu-sic and dance. Each group will strengthen their talents and gifts through various activities.

Sunday School— High School Nov. 3rd, 10th, 17th & 24th

9:45—10:45 AM

Sunday school is a wonderful small group time for students to learn and ask those deeper questions about God’s word. The high school will be using the Sticky Faith curriculum: “Can I Ask That 2?”. This curriculum is designed to lead teenagers in critical conversations about their faith. We will look at topics such as why bad things happen to good people and is it wrong to doubt God?. It raises hard ques-tions that don’t have easy answers, and helps students think about them from a biblical perspec-tive. We are encouraging students to bring their Bibles.

9:45—10:45 AM The middle school will meet in room #106 downstairs. The middle school will be using a “Ministry to Youth” study on: Comparison, Anger, Populari-ty and God’s Word.

Sonrise Café

Sunday Mornings 8:45 - 9:45 AM

The youth offer a wide variety of drinks from Latte’s to berry blast smooth-ies. The café will be open every Sunday from 8:45 - 9:45 am, so come by and enjoy either a hot or cold drink. Sonrise Café offers gift cards and accepts credit cards. The money raised will go toward our summer mission trips and youth activities.

Basketball Ministry Signups

October 23rd—November 10th

Basketball season is here! The basketball ministry is a great out-reach for Friedberg Moravian Church. Not only do youth learn the fundamentals of basketball, but grow their faith in Christ through weekly devotions, teamwork, fellowship, and sportsmanship. All youth from 6th grade to 12th grade are invited to play. We have a middle school and high school team. Any youth interested in playing basketball, please see Karen Hill to sign up. The cost is only $10 and you receive a t-shirt. It’s a great time to invite friends to youth, learn the game of basketball and share the love of Jesus.

SENIOR FRIENDS NEWS

MOTTO: LET ME HELP WHEN I CAN, HELP ME WHEN I NEED HELP

The Senior Friends met on October 17th at 9:30 a.m. for our trip to Hall’s Apple Orchard in Cana, Virginia, or so we thought, but this trip turned out to be even bigger and better than anyone could have anticipated. Our amazing bus drivers sure do follow directions well. Our drivers were Ronnie Hedgecock and John Mason. We left Friedberg Moravian Church right on time, we had 28 people attending. The highlight of our trip was stopping in King to pick up Lois Rush. Lois is a dear friend and member who had to move to King sometime last year. Her special friend, Anna Beeson, ask if we could stop and pickup Lois, since we were traveling that direction. Well, of course, and everything worked out just as planned. After getting Lois, we went to the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Mt. Airy for breakfast or lunch which ever you wanted. Thanks to Anna Beeson for making our reservations and to Carol Knouse for getting this trip together, don’t know what we would do without them. They had every “t” crossed and every “i” dotted, they are splendid members who are so dependable and take care of us. When we left the restaurant our next stop was the apple orchard, and we shopped and shopped. I think everyone got want they wanted and then some. We finished there a little early and someone suggested that we should go on up the mountain to Fancy Gap where the “Sunny Side Store” is located. Everyone agreed, we informed our drivers and off we went. If you are not familiar with this store, all I can say is that you will have to ask someone who went with us how this experience was for them. After we finished at Sunny Side and started back down the mountain, we stopped at the Virginia - North Carolina Produce Market and shopped for some more “stuff”. Once again, you will have to ask someone how this stop was for them. This past month we had 43 cards mailed, 18 calls made, 6 visits to sick and/or shut-in friends. We also had 8 meals delivered to our friends. We returned to the church around 5:00 p.m. which was somewhat late for us, I know a couple of people were inconvenienced but there were no complaints and everyone seemed to have a really wonderful time, just somewhat tired. God blessed us with a safe trip, absolutely gorgeous weather and more laughter, fun and Christian fellowship that continue to make us laugh. We have too much fun, we can’t be over 50! Our next meeting will be NOVEMBER 14, save the date, I’m sure you will want to attend. Respectfully submitted, Carolyn B.
