Called to Serve
Some years ago, I was just treating myself to a relaxing cup of coffee at Fresno State. The cafeteria was vibrant with the energy and spirit of those young minds. I thought to myself, these young people are not only the future of our society, but they are also our present. A few minutes later, a gentleman came towards me and said, can I sit with you. I was delighted. This gentleman was a member of a denomina-tion church. He started preaching to me about Jesus and his kingdom and went on persuading me to join the Sunday worship at his church not far from Fresno State. He preached to me for nearly 15 minutes and I listened, at the end of which I gave him my business card, as we said goodbye. His eyebrows raised in surprise as he saw my business card that reads- Fr. Theophane Antony, Pastor, Saint Lucy’s Catholic Church, Fowler, CA. He said “I am sorry, I did not know you were a priest! Don’t say sorry, I re-sponded. I am impressed the way you preach the gospel and I appreciate it. You were proclaiming Jesus Christ!
Although, he could not convert me to his denomination church, we became good friends! Sometimes we Catholics shy away from our calling to serve and preach the gospel. Every baptized person is com-missioned by Jesus who said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have com-manded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” (Matthew 28, 19- 20). This Sunday’s gospel reflects, Jesus who says: “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. He brings them in about nine o’clock, again the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, around noon, at three o’clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o’clock, the landowner found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They answered, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard. When it was evening, he gave them all their reward. Let us accept Jesus’ invitation because everyone is called to serve. 1 Peter 4:10-11 says “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as
faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. ... If anyone serves, they should do so with the
strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ”.
Thank You Daily Mass, Sunday Mass, 40-hour adoration, CCD, Baptism, Wedding, Funerals, Saturday confes-sions… our staff has been busy. We are blessed with an amazing team! Thank you, guys for everything you do for our community. We are so grateful to John Coleman and his team of ushers, Grand Knight John Thompson and the knights, Brian Cabrera and sacristans, and many more volunteers. The ministry zoom meeting was attended by 38 people: Thanks to each and every one of you for serving. Thanks to Deacon Hugo and Deacon Francis for organizing. Thanks to Deacon Joe Lubatti for the daily Rosary No-vena, on face book. I am thankful to all our volunteers who serve Monday night dinner. Good job guys. Keep up your good work! With great gratitude thank you to all who have provided dinners for the priests.
