Surrounding Our Sinful Life to Christ

"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion and if you want to be happy practice compassion."

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today 's Gospel passage showsthe unconditional love of our Father. As we read this parable we can categorize the life of prodigal soninto 3 phases, first as a sinner, here he forcefully takes his share and leaves his father and brotherand lives a very sinful life. Second, as under conversion, here he comes to his senses and realizesthat how sinful he has been and decides to go back to his father. Third, as a convert, here he comesback to his father and he confesses his sins to him and the father instead of scolding his son heembraces him and accepts him as son. This shows the compassion of the father towards his son.

Much more than this is the compassion of our Lord as Fr. Henry JM Nouwen in his book, " TheReturn of Prodigal Son: A Story of home coming" writes, more than any other parables in the Gospels, the parable of Prodigal Son expresses boundless compassionate love of the Lord" and more interest-ingly this Gospel passage is found only in the Gospel of St. Luke which shows St. Luke's intention toshow the Compassion and mercy of our Father to the whole world.

From Old Testament time onwards Lord has promised his unconditional love for us, as book ofProphet Isaiah 54:10 states that "Though the mountains may depart and hills be removed but mysteadfast love shall not depart from you, says the Lord who has compassion on you". We shouldrealize the fact that our God never abandons any sinners he accepts the sinners and embraces themwith his compassionate arms like a hen who gathers her broods as psalmists says, " How often haveI desired to gather you children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings".

So my dear brothers and sisters, during this Lenten season let us all feel this compassionateembrace of Jesus by accepting and surrendering our sinful state to our Lord and if we feel that we havenot committed any sin then St John gives us a reply in his letter 1:8 that, "If we say we have no sin,we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us."

We as Christians not only should experience the compassionate love but also should express it.I conclude using the words of Dalai Lama, that "If you want others to be happy, practice compassionand if you want to be happy practice compassion." AMEN.
