CALL TO WORSHIP — Philippians 2:5-11 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Grace Greater Than Our Sin Marvelous grace of our loving Lord Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt Yonder on Calvary's mount outpoured There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt

Grace grace God's grace Grace that will pardon and cleanse within Grace grace God's grace Grace that is greater than all our sin

Sin and despair like the sea waves cold Threaten the soul with infinite loss Grace that is greater yes grace untold Points to the refuge the mighty Cross

Chorus

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide What can avail to wash it away Look there is flowing a crimson tide Whiter than snow you may be today

Chorus

Marvellous infinite matchless grace Freely bestowed on all who believe You that are longing to see His face Will you this moment His grace receive

Chorus

OUR HISTORIC FAITH: HEIDELBERG CATECHISM, LORD’S DAY 11 Q29. Why is the Son of God called "Jesus," meaning "savior"? A. Because he saves us from our sins. Salvation cannot be found in anyone else; it is futile to look for any salvation elsewhere. Matt. 1:21; Heb. 7:25; Isa. 43:11; John 15:5; Acts 4:11-12; 1 Tim. 2:5

Page 2: The Fourth Sunday of Lent - gracekernersville.org

Q30. Do those who look for their salvation and security in saints, in themselves, or elsewhere really believe in the only savior Jesus? A. No. Although they boast of being his, by their deeds they deny the only savior and deliverer, Jesus. Either Jesus is not a perfect savior, or those who in true faith accept this savior have in him all they need for their salvation. 1 Cor. 1:12-13; Gal. 5:4; Col. 1:19-20; 2:10; 1 John 1:7

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) Almighty Father, We enter your presence Confessing the things we try to conceal from you And the things we try to conceal from others. We confess the heartbreak, worry, and sorrow we have caused: That make it difficult for others to forgive us, The times we have made it easy for others to do wrong, The harm we have done that makes it hard for us to forgive ourselves. Lord have mercy and forgive us through Christ. Amen.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT – Psalm 103:8, 10-12 (NIV) The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

Satisfied All my life long I had panted For a drink from some cool spring That I hoped would quench the burning Of the thirst I felt within

Hallelujah! He has found me The One my soul so long has craved Jesus satisfies all my longings Through his blood I now am saved

Feeding on the filth around me Till my strength was almost gone Longed my soul for something better Only still to hunger on

Chorus

Poor I was and sought for riches Something that would satisfy But the dust I gathered ’round me Only mocked my soul’s sad cry

Chorus

Well of water ever springing Bread of Life so rich and free Untold wealth that never faileth My Redeemer is to me

Chorus

PRAYER FOR GUIDANCE

SCRIPTURE READING – James 4:1-10 (ESV) What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he

will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

SERMON Remain Faithful: Desiring by Faith

RESPONDING IN SONG

O Praise The Name (Anástasis) I cast my mind to Calvary Where Jesus bled and died for me I see His wounds, His hands, His feet My Savior on that cursed tree

His body bound and drenched in tears They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb The entrance sealed by heavy stone Messiah still and all alone

O praise the name of the Lord our God O praise His name forever more For endless days we will sing Your praise Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

Then on the third at break of dawn The Son of heaven rose again O trampled death where is your sting? The angels roar for Christ the King

Chorus

He shall return in robes of white The blazing Son shall pierce the night And I will rise among the saints My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face

PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, Forever and ever. Amen.

BENEDICTION – Romans 15:13 and 5:5 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Faithful Faithful forever You are faithful Father to the fatherless You uphold the one who feels forsaken You are faithful God

Faithful forever You are faithful Lover of the wounded heart You defend the poor and the forgotten You are faithful God

And I will sing to the Maker of heaven and earth God You reign forever and Your love will endure Faithful and true is the name of the Lord You are faithful God

Faithful forever You are faithful Shelter for the fragile soul You lift us up You hold us all together You are faithful God

And I will sing to the Maker of heaven and earth God You reign forever and Your love will endure Faithful and true is the name of the Lord You are faithful God

You are there (You are there) In ev’ry season of my soul (in ev’ry season) You are there (You are there) You’re the anchor that will hold (You’re the anchor) You are there (You are there) In the valley of the shadows You are faithful God

“My dear Wormwood, I note with great displeasure that the Enemy has, for the time

being, put a forcible end to your direct attacks on the patient's chastity. You ought to

have known that He always does in the end, and you ought to have stopped before

you reached that stage. For as things are, your man has now discovered the

dangerous truth that these attacks don't last forever; consequently you cannot use

again what is, after all, our best weapon - the belief of ignorant humans, that there is

no hope of getting rid of us except by yielding. I suppose you've tried persuading

him that chastity is unhealthy?

Your affectionate uncle,

Screwtape Jerusalem

["And did those feet in ancient time"] by William Blake

And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon Englands mountains green: And was the holy Lamb of God, On Englands pleasant pastures seen!

And did the Countenance Divine, Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here, Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold: Bring me my arrows of desire: Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold! Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand: Till we have built Jerusalem, In Englands green & pleasant Land.
