Honduran Independence Bilingual School (HIBS)

It is now summer break for the Honduran Independence Bilingual School in Quimistán, Honduras. The

head of School, Vivian Claros, is the mother of a baby girl, born at the end of the school year. Mother,

father and baby are all doing well.

Last spring, the Outreach Committee requested special funding from the Vestry for the HIBS to replace

an aging cistern and student bathrooms. The funds that were approved and sent were sufficient to also

build a shower for students to use after sports. The pictures we received of the original condition of the

facilities were very concerning. The photos of the renovations show that the funds were well used, and

that St. David’s has made a lasting, and important contribution to the well being of the students.

Before the new school year begins on February 1, 2015, we must raise the tuition and fees for the three

students that we support: Genesis, Veronica, and Lesly. Vivian has sent us recent photos and updates

on how the children are doing. The cost of sending a child to HIBS for one year is $860. I hope that

you will consider contributing to this ministry. Any funds received beyond the amount of the three tui-

tions will be sent to HIBS to help fund the academic program. Checks should be made out to St. David’s

Episcopal Church, with HIBS in the memo line, and sent to the Rector.

With best wishes for the New Year,

Christine Parker

SHROVE SUNDAY PANCAKES will be served February 15 from 10:15 to 11:00 in the Un-dercroft. Come between the later two services to join for food and fellowship to celebrate the end of the Epiphany season and to prepare for the season of Lent which begins with Ash Wednesday. There will be pancake races and we will bury the Alleluias for Lent. Palms will be burned to make ashes for Ash Wednesday, so before then bring your palms blessed last year on Palm Sunday and leave them in the receptacle in the narthex.

ASH WEDNESDAY IS FEBRUARY 18. The Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes will be offered at 7:30 am in the chancel and at 12:00 noon in the church. At 7:00 pm we will join the good people of the Palisades Community Church for a special Ash Wednesday service at their church, 5200 Cathedral Avenue, N.W. Fr. Dodge will be the preacher. The service will be preceded at 6:15 pm by a simple supper to which all invited. If you plan on attending the sup-per, please let St. David’s Parish Office know so we know how many to plan for.

LENTEN VIDEO STUDY On Thursday afternoons from 4:00 to 5:30 pm in Lent will begin Thursday, February 26 in the Parish House. We will engage with “Serious Answers to Hard Questions” by watching a video each week of a prominent religious scholar grappling with is-sues such as “Evil” (February 26), “The God of the Old Testament” (March 5), “Jesus and Christianity” (March 12), “Resurrection” (March 19), and “Forgiveness” (March 26). All are welcome!

SO OTHERS MIGHT EAT: Two opportunities to help feed the homeless: 1) Deposit

weekly donations of “walking” food items (granola, fruit and health bars, nuts, packages of

cheese and crackers, peanut butter, fruit, tuna or salmon in pop-up containers or plastic cups) in

the basket in the Narthex. 2) bake a casserole once a month. Pans & recipes are in the Wicker

Room. Bring casseroles to the church by February 16.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS CALENDAR IS IN THE BACK OF THE CHURCH: The

Flower Guild encourages everyone to give a donation for the flowers that grace the St. David’s

altar. Please choose a Sunday on which you would like to give the altar flowers, either in

memory of or in honor of a loved one or in thanksgiving for God’s blessing on you. Simply

write your name next to the date you choose on the calendar and then send your donation

(suggested $100) along with the wording of your memorial or thanksgiving as you would like it

to appear in the Sunday bulletin. Your donations are very much appreciated and we hope to fill

many spaces on the calendar! Call the Parish Office or sign up on the calendar at the Invitation

Center at the back of the church.

Announcements

HOSPITALITY TIME: Following the 8:00 am worship services, there will be coffee, refresh-

ments and fellowship in the “Wicker Room.” Following the 10:00 am worship service, there

will be coffee, refreshments and fellowship in the Undercroft.

WORSHIP BAGS: For our youngest worshipers, worship bags can be found on the coat tree

at the back of the church. They contain coloring pages and supplies to keep toddlers and young

children occupied. Your child is welcome to keep the contents of the bag, but please return the

bag to the coat tree at the end of the service, so that it may be refilled for use next week.

We give thanks this week for the wedding anniversary of Joan and Jim Townsend.

ST. DAVID'S ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING will be held today Sunday, February 1, at 11:15 am immediately following a combined 10 am service. St. David’s bylaws require that the Annual Meeting be held on the third Sunday of May “unless for good reason another time...as may be determined by the majority of the Vestry be selected.” Because summer vacations often impede the work of the new Vestry elected in May, for 2015 the Vestry has decided to try mov-ing the Annual Meeting to February to get a jump on the programming year. Business at the Annual Meeting, in addition to receiving reports, will include the election of a Senior Warden and 3 Vestry members for three year terms. A Potluck lunch will be enjoyed during the busi-ness meeting. To vote at the Annual General Meeting, you must be at least 15 years old; a mem-ber in good standing- meaning your baptism had been recorded in an Episcopal Church and you have regularly participated in the Church's worship, mission, and ministry during the last year; a contributor of record to St. David's for the three months prior to the Annual General Meeting; and enrolled in St. David's records at least three months prior to the Annual General Meeting. A list of qualified voters is available at the Invitation Center in the back of the church. If you do not see your name listed, and you think you qualify, please speak to the Rector. To stand for election as Senior Warden or as a Vestry member or to nominate someone, contact the chair of the Nominating Committee, Lisa Mould. Vestry nominees must be at least 18 years old, and a qualified voter as defined above.

FEBRUARY 8 IS ANOTHER SANDWICH MAKING SUNDAY! Sunday School and the Rector’s Forum will be suspended that day so everyone can participate at 10:15 in the Under-croft in preparing 1,000 sandwiches for Martha’s Table in this fun, intergenerational, quarterly outreach event.

The Gospel Mark 1:21-28

Reader The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, Jesus entered the syna-gogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, ‘What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, ‘What is this? A new teaching - with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.’ At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding re-gion of Galilee.

Reader The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

The First Reading Deuteronomy 18:15-20

The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet. This is what you requested of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said: ‘If I hear the voice of the Lord my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die.’ Then the Lord replied to me: ‘They are right in what they have said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. Any-one who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I my-self will hold accountable. But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak - that prophet shall die.’

Reader The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Homily Rev’d Robin Dodge

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and

earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light

from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being

with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our sal-

vation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he be-

came incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he

was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On

the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended

into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come

again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have

no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who pro-

ceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is wor-

shiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in

one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for

the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the

life of the world to come. Amen.

The People stand.

The Prayers of the People (Form IV)

The Family Ministers of the Day lead the Prayers of the People and the People respond by say-

ing, “Hear our prayer”

Let us pray for the Church and for the world.

Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your

truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world.

Silence

Lord, in your mercy

Hear our prayer.

Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and

peace, that we may honor one another and serve the common good.

Silence

Lord, in your mercy

Hear our prayer.

Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its re-

sources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory.

Silence

Lord, in your mercy

Hear our prayer.

Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve

Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us.

Silence

Lord, in your mercy

Hear our prayer.

11

your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly county where, with the Ever-Blessed

Virgin Mary, Blessed David, and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting herit-

age of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all

creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By Him, and

with Him and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Sprit all honor and glory is yours,

Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

Presider And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to

pray:

People and Presider Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

10

The Presider continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made

known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word

spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your

Son. For in these last days you sent Him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to

be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In Him, you have delivered us from

evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out

of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when

he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said,

“Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance

of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he

gave it to them, and said,” Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new

Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. When-

ever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Presider and People

We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection,

We await his coming in glory;

The Presider continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; pre-

senting to you from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gra-

cious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacra-

ment of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to

your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified

by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under

7

Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage

and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation.

Silence

Lord, in your mercy

Hear our prayer.

We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be ful-

filled, and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom.

Silence

Lord, in your mercy

Hear our prayer.

The Presider and People offer prayers from the Parish Prayer List and then the Presider con-

cludes with the following collect:

Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully ac-

cept the prayers of your people and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus

Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession of Sin

Deacon or Presider Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

The Presider and People pray together

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought,

word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neigh-

bors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake

of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may de-

light in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Presider says

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Je-

sus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit

keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Peace

Presider The Peace of the Lord be always with you.

People And also with you.

A sign of peace is exchanged among the People.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

Presider Ascribe to the Lord the honor due God’s name; bring

offerings and come into God’s courts. Psalm 96:8

Offertory Anthem How beauteous are their feet Charles V Stanford (1852-1924)

After the Offertory Anthem the People stand while representatives of the congrega-

tion bring the People’s offerings of bread and wine, and money or other gifts to the

presider. The People remain standing while the offerings are presented and placed on

the Altar and all sing the doxology:

The Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow,

Praise God, all creatures here below.

Praise God, above ye heavenly host.

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

9

The Great Thanksgiving - Eucharistic Prayer B Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Then facing the Holy Table the Presider proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the word made flesh you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing his hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
