Transcript of The formula for lit on tues
Tuesday’s Exam is 1 hr 30
First turn to M&M (always Q21)
NOT COME UP SO FAR: CURLEY (MASCULINITY/VIOLENCE/SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST = wants power = wears clothes like father’s – compare to Slim who has natural power)
END OF THE NOVEL (LOOK AT THIS AND LOOK AT THE ONE WE DID IN CLASS) – cyclical structure – same as beginning. How nature reflects society?
2 parts (50 MINS TOTAL)
Part A (25 MINS – 5/6 MINS TO ANNOTATE AND THEN 5/6 MINS PER PARA)
Passage
Analyse it – select something from the beg/mid/end (x3 paras)
Steinbeck describes X (key word in the question) as ‘QUOTE – 3-7 words’. This shows/portrays/suggests/highlights/implies that they are….because…The use of a Y (technique) is effective because… it makes the reader feel…
Eg. Steinbeck presents Slim as ‘a tall man’. This shows that he has physical strength and implies that he is of a higher status than many of the other characters. The syntax with the adjective ‘tall’ being used to describe the ‘man’ is effective as it almost makes it sound as if to be a ‘man’ you need to be physically substantial. This makes the reader aware before he has even spoken that this is a man of natural authority and power, unlike Curley who is ‘small’ and insecure. Could also mentioned about filling the doorway = has light around him = halo? Symbolises his almost God-like wisdom.
SAY A LOT ABOUT A LITTLE = POETIC VOICE
DISSECTION
Part B (25 MINS)
Whole novel (big ideas) x3 paras
1. First time we see them (their description)
Eg. the materials they are wearing = how do they represent them? Colours…?
2. A big event in the middle
3. The last time we see them
What they say
What they do
What they look like
What others say about them
The environment around then or objects and how they represent ‘big ideas’ (cruelty? Loneliness…)
Start each paragraph with:
Steinbeck uses X (the character or the something about them eg. Curley’s appearance) to explore Y (stereotypes of masculinity) in 1930’s America.
Eg. Steinbeck uses the setting at the end to explore the inevitable failure of the American Dream in 1930’s America.
Try and get some context in if you can (dustbowl/Great Depression/Steinbeck worked on a ranch himself etc…)
Still keep using quotes and analysing in section B
An Inspector Calls (40 MINS)
MR BIRLING (incl stage directions) AND THE ENDING HAVEN’T COME UP YET
ENDING = YOUNGER GENERATION = WHAT THEY SAY COMPARED TO THE OLDER GENERATION. Morality? Have they learnt? Cyclical structure…
LOOK AT WHAT MR B SAYS (TO END TO PLAY AND COMPARE TO WHAT HE SAYS TO OPEN IT - PARTICULARLY LOOK AT PUNCT AND THE SYNTAX BEING BROKEN)
Structure the Answer:
Beg/mid/End (first time we see them – look at the stage directions…) SAY HOW THE AUDIENCE WOULD RESPOND AND WHY
SAME AS M+M = TAKE QUOTES AND DISSECT THEM
TECHNIQUES TO USE
CONNECTIVES TO MAKE SOMETHING SEEM BALANCED OR IF USED A LOT = NEVER ENDING
PRONOUNS (I/Curley’s wife/You = accusatory) – IS THERE ONE THAT IS REPEATED? IS THERE ONE AT THE START OF SENTENCE?
Syntax (word order) – first word and the last word look at – why are they there? What stands out?
Mono-syllabic (one beat) vs poly-syllabic words = is there a patterns? What about the feeling? Pace?
Plosive/sibilant words = hard sounding/soft sounding
Sometimes you get a word that is both! Eg sweet
Start is sibilant and the consonant at the end is plosive = contrast… something seems sweet but is aggressive?
Sentence length – does it sound confident or confused… relaxed or direct? Aggressive or emotional?
