YEAR 5 RETURNS AFTER A WONDERFUL TIME IN CANBERRA

Our Year 5 students had a terrific time in Canberra last week. Many thanks to Ms

Amery, Mr Williamson, Mrs Phegan, and Mrs Chapman who ensured the safety and

comfort of each child over the four days. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know our

wonderful Year 5 group of students and was so proud of their positive responses to

everything and fabulous attitude and behaviour while on camp. Student reports will be

in next week’s newsletter. Many thanks to the teachers’ families who managed around

their absence. It’s a big commitment from our dedicated staff members, and very much

    appreciated by the students.

We were very fortunate in that it snowed for us when we visited Smiggins Holes, but

remained fine for us while we visited the many sites in Canberra. I want to thank our

parent community for preparing your children so well for their visit to Parliament House

and the snow, and for supporting this experience in independence and growth. I will

always look back on the camp with incredible pride in our wonderful students and

    school.

    RUN FOREST RUN

Just 2 short weeks to go and our students are very excited. Please get involved with

    this wonderful community event.

    GROWTH MINDSET

    Reasons Children Need Problem-Solving Kids

Kids face a variety of problems every day, ranging from academic difficulties to

problems on the sports field. Yet, few of them have a formula for solving those

    problems.

Kids who lack problem-solving skills may avoid taking action when faced with a

problem. Rather than put their energy into solving the problem, they may invest their

    time in avoiding the issue.

Other kids who lack problem-solving skills spring into action without recognizing their

choices. A child may hit a peer who cuts in front of him in line because he's not sure

    what else to do.

  • Principal’s Report

Or, he may avoid the work in class when he's finding things difficult because he can't

think of any other ways to deal with the issue. These choices may create even bigger

    problems in the long run.

Teach Kids How to Evaluate the Problem

Kids who feel overwhelmed or hopeless often won't attempt to address a problem. But,

when you give them a clear formula for solving problems, they'll feel more confident in

    their ability to try.

Here are the steps to problem-solving:

    1. Identify the problem. Just stating the problem out loud can make a big difference

for kids who are feeling stuck. Help your child state the problem, such as, "You

don't have anyone to play with at recess," or "You aren't sure if you should take the

    advanced math class."

    2. Develop at least five possible solutions. Brainstorm possible ways to solve the

problem. Emphasize that all the solutions don't necessarily need to be good at

ideas (at least not at this point). Help your child develop solutions if he/she is

struggling to come up with ideas. Even a silly answer or far-fetched idea is a

possible solution. The key is to help him/her see that with a little creativity, they can

    find many different potential solutions.

    3. Identify the pros and cons of each solution. Help your child identify potential

positive and negative consequences for each potential solution identified.

    4. Pick a solution. Once your child has evaluated the possible positive and negative

outcomes, encourage her/him to pick a solution.

    5. Test it out. Tell her/him to try a solution and see what happens. If it doesn't work

out, she/he can always try another solution from the list that she developed in step

    two.

    Parliament House

The school and vice captains were lucky to go to State Parliament House where we got

to meet Brad Hazzard. We also learnt about him and what they do at Parliament House.

We had a delicious morning tea where we met many student leaders from other schools.

We went to many rooms and Brad Hazard spoke about each room and what politicians

do in them. Then we asked Brad Hazzard questions and were given a folder which

    included a certificate.

This was an amazing experience for all of us and we had so much fun learning about

State Parliament from Brad Hazzard and we will never forget this event.
