The Fonte Gaia HackathonLibrarians, Researchers and Users,
a multilevel collaboration
Elina Leblanc (PhD Student, LUHCIE & LIG)
Goals of our hackathon
• Elaboration of participative indexing tool with controlled vocabularies (RAMEAU, Nuovo Soggettario, LCSH).
• Chocolaterie -- France -- Royat (Puy-de-Dôme)
• A way to help users better understand the librarians way of thinking, and to improve their navigation in a digital library (DL).• A way for librarians to standardize keywords and to improve
search functionalities.

Organisation of the event
• Three days:• 10 april: Workshop about participation in digital libraries and archives;• 11-12 april: Hackathon.
• 8 participants, 2 teams🍍• 4 experts who helped the participants with their project:• Marion Étasse• Marie-Caroline Favre• Anne Garcia-Fernandez• Samuel Libot

An unusual hackathon
• A pedagogical and initiative hackathon:• Participation of experts;• Workshop which introduced the challenges of hackathon.
• Meeting with potential users ;• Another sight on participative services through their projects.

Participants’ opinions
propositions

Results of the hackathonFrom cooperation to collaboration
First project: An indexing tool
• First team: Louisa Leblanc, Fanny Mezard, Odile Richaud, Théo Roulet
18/06/2019 7
Second project: An initiation platform
• Second team: Serena Crespi, Marie-Hélène Gatto, Emmanuelle Perrin, Marie Petit
• A platform for students and their teachers, where they can:• Enrich the metadata with new Dublin Core elements;• Annotate and index portions of text (thanks to the IIIF technology);• Transcript and encode text, with an XML-TEI tool.
• Initiation of the students to main DH activities, with the help of their teachers and of the digital library.

And the winner is…
• Two high-quality projects, but… the 2nd project is our winner
• Why?• 2nd project = collaborative and pedagogical → In line with Fonte Gaia;• 1st project =
• Propose to users to “index without knowing it”, i.e. users work for the DL without having conscience of it;
• Lack of transparency about the controlled vocabularies and the activity itself.→ Ethical impediment.

However…
• Due to the high quality of the 1st project, it will also be added to Fonte Gaia, after a fitting of the tool in a public engagement way.
• Two level of indexation:• Work level;• Text level.

A multilevel collaboration
• Perceptions of librarians-users collaboration through the project of the participants:
• Collaboration between (young) researchers and librarians before and during the hackathon.

Collaboration in the eyes of the participants
• 1st project: Cooperative service• Indexation as an on-time activity;• Juxtaposition of knowledge;
• A project in-line with librarians missions, as a support for exploration and serendipity:• Query expansion;• Suggestions of works with similar keywords.
18/06/2019 Journée d'étude - Collaborations Chercheurs/Bibliothécaires 12
Collaboration in the eyes of the participants
• 2nd project: Collaborative service• DL as an initiation platform to DH and scientific activities (indexation, digital
scholarly editions);• Co-creation of contents by students, researchers and librarians.
• Service that goes beyond the digital walls of the DL;• In line with the librarian mission of training;• In line with the practices of digital humanists → Spreading good practices
with digital.

Collaboration in the eyes of the participants
• Different perceptions of participation, but a similar vision of indexation
• A librarian vision:• A simplified indexation: addition of tags from controlled vocabularies.• Attention pay to the validation of the contributions.
• Indexation: a core activity of their profession with rules and standard;• Simplification as a way to highlight their authority and expertise.
→ Raising awareness to a librarian activity18/06/2019 Journée d'étude - Collaborations Chercheurs/Bibliothécaires 14
Collaboration before the hackathon
• The hackathon is the result of a close collaboration with the librarians of Grenoble:• Expertise of the librarians on the challenge, project management, animation of
workshops, author and image rights.• Expertise of the researcher on digital services and digital participation.
• Hackathon that meets:• My research interests on DLs, their users and their services (participative or not);• The interests of the library on research services and the opening of library to
participative events.
