April Has Come and Gone!

Where did April go? I had no trouble getting my March flights in, but there’s been a difference this April to say the least. Wind and rain seem to have ruled my free time. I finally managed a half dozen times in the air, but the month just seems to have flown by. As I type this I have one Saturday left. As it stands now I may or may not get out

to fly. Only time will tell. Cindy and I just got back from the NRHSA or National Retail Hobby Store (owners) Association convention last week. The convention was really a good show. Not a lot of new products to talk about. Horizon has a new RV-8 in .50 glow that should be out about mid May that really looks nice. It’s a clean machine that flies quite nicely. Those of you who enjoy civilian aviation have something to look forward to with this release. Ace/Thunder Tiger is releasing a new giant scale IMAC version of a Yak or something. I’m not even sure what it really is, but they called it a Gak-54. I think it was a combination of a Sukhoi and Yak. I just know it was big, and it flew great.

Rocky McCarter one of the Thunder Tiger pilots put this thing through its paces, and if you are into this sort of bird you would be well advised to take a close look. As I mentioned, there were not a lot of new products being released, but attendance, both from the manufacturer /distributor and the retailer level was up a little over 10%. Everyone present had a really positive attitude about the state of the industry, and the direction it’s moving. I have a feeling in the next few months we should be seeing some new, mostly electric products, released into the consumer market. That’s about all for this month. Honestly I don’t know just how active I will be this year. I’m

having some personal concerns about my parents, their health, and life style. We all go through this, I’m no different, but I feel it is only fair to let the club know I’m not certain Cindy and I will be at all our club events on a full time basis this season. Only time will tell, my family comes first. Dennis

Secretary’s Report Tom Spriet – [email protected]

Minutes of the April 9, 2009 General Meeting VP Dennis McFarlane called the meeting to order at 7:35 P.M.

Committee Reports Secretary – Thomas Spriet: Tom requested a motion to accept the minutes as published in the flypaper. The Motion was so made with a second. Treasurer/Membership Chairman – Paul Jacobs: Paul reported a balance of roughly $31,000 in the club treasury. Dues are coming in pretty well. We are at about 35 undecided and unpaid members. Field repairs and upgrades will soon happen and impact our balance. Dennis made a motion to accept the report as presented. The Motion was so made with a second. Alvin Cole was presented as a new member. Welcome to Alvin! Field Chairman – Greg Bohler: Tennis poles have been refurbished. Holes for the receivers have been drilled and are awaiting concrete. We are anticipating this Saturday as the pour date. The roller has not been activated yet this year but will be happening soon. Once new poles have been installed the existing will be removed. Same lawn service has been hired. Jim Toth will be again fertilizing. General work day will be April 25

th. Reseal and recoating of the runway, taxiway, and parking lot will be happening soon.

You will be able to fly just use the grass. Safety Chairman – Karl Griesbaum: Review the rules that are posted at the field. Flying must not happen north of the runway. Post your current AMA / Club membership card on the frequency board. This is a procedure that must be followed. Government Relations/Fun Fly Chairman – John Turner: May 9

th will be our first fun fly. It will be a

climb & glide. Come out and enjoy the fun. We have been contacted by the Blue Max club to have a get together at the field. We will be getting together with the Naperville and Chicagoland clubs for another friendly confrontation. Flypaper Editor – Tom Siwek: Keep content coming for the Flypaper. Chief Flight Instructor – Dan Compton: No report. Event Reports Pattern Contest CD – Rusty Dose: No report. Windy City Jets Coordinator – Dave Murray: No report. Kids Fly Day CD – Armin Weber: Mel Ziska and Armin had a meeting with a Boy Scout club that are very interested in our upcoming Kids fun fly. Kid’s fun fly is May 16

Festival of flight CD – Paul Jacobs: The festival of flight is on schedule. All pilots with an AMA card are welcome to fly. There will be no landing fee this year. AMA requires sign up for the events. There will not be a mismatch of airplanes in the sky. Our Air boss (Tom Siwek) will attempt the orderly flow of like airplanes in the air at the same time. There will be a $5.00 charge for all spectators. Kids are free. Tom Siwek added that all pilots need to ground check all equipment prior to flight operations. Safety procedures are most important with a good preflight mandatory per AMA rules! With the presence of “John Q. Public”, we must ALL BE SAFE ! Knowledgeable and vigilant spotters will be mandatory for all pilots/flight ops. IMAC Coordinator – Dan Knippen: IMAC is coming in August. Help may be required for the registration process. If you have any questions about this event please contact Dan or Dave Genovise. Come get your feet wet. It’s a lot of fun! Show & Tell New planes were shown by the following members: Dana Berry - Midwest Extra 300 VP McFarlane adjourned the meeting at 8:30 P.M.

Treasurer’s & Membership Chairman’s Report Paul Jacobs – [email protected]

As Well the very successful work day is over and the field has never been in better condition. Everything has been done that Greg wanted to accomplish and the seal coating and striping is set for early May and could be done by the time you read this.

We have several new members to welcome this month:

Tom Beery Alvin Cole Sr. Juan Colon’ Piotr Niedoba Steven Saunders Ross VanDorpe Be sure to say “Hi” when you see these new members at the field and remember to insert your AMA card with the FVAC sticker on it in the frequency box at the field. It lets fellow flyers know who you are and most importantly that you are insured. We are still showing 233 members on the roster with 36 on the suspended list for non-payment of dues. The “Notice” at the field is updated weekly. The treasury is still in good shape at $28,000 although we will be spending big bucks in the next month on the seal coating and striping but Greg is bringing in everything so far “under” budget. That’s it for this month, Paul

Field Chairman’s Report Greg Bohler – [email protected]

Spring it would appear has finally arrived. It must be spring. Much to everyone's surprise, I actually spent the entire afternoon at the field flying a couple of Friday’s back. I didn't work on a single thing. My airplane did well and flying was safe, not as pretty as some of our pilots, but safe. I went home at the end of the day with my pride and my plane intact. I was more than a little concerned about the issue with our new tennis standards and

getting the concrete poured in time for work day. We were finally able to get concrete on Saturday, April 11, thanks to Todd Culbertson, who was tenacious to say the least, when dealing with the concrete people. We had about 20 guys show up with 9 wheel barrows. It took about an hour and a half to complete the pour. We had 2 hours of prep before and 1/2 an hour of clean up after. Even though it was very hard work, everyone moved concrete like pros and by the time we were done, the sleeves and center pole were installed perfectly. I don't know why I was nervous. Per usual, club members stepped up and did the work, had fun, and were back flying in no time. A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED!!! Work day was on April 25

th. We accomplished several tasks.

1. We set the new catch nets. 2 We removed the old catch nets. 3. We turn the work table tops over to take advantage of the unspoiled bottom sides of the wood. 4. We dug out the 6" PVC pipe and repair it for our show electric needs. 5. We got out the grills. 6. We got out the blast shields. 7. We replaced our metal entrance chains with plastic chain that Paul Douds has gotten for us.

This sounds like an extensive list of projects, but the way our club works. Thanks to everyone in advance for all the hard work. This is why we can be proud to have the best flying field around. As I was reminded the other day, it's spring. Even though it may be windy, your plane doesn't know it's windy so get out and fly. Greg

Fun-Fly Chairman’s Report (A.K.A. John Turner) – [email protected]

May Fun Fly Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 9

th at the FVAC for this year’s first fun fly event

“one minute climb and glide” beginning at 4:00 pm. This first event encourages all modelers and their planes (gas, glow or electric) to participate for the chance to be the number one pilot for the longest glide time after the one minute mark. Here are the

program rules established by the FF chairman.

1. Plans are to have multiple pilots (2 or 3) and planes approach the flight line and take off for one minute, then power down.

2. Try to stay in the air as long as possible before landing safely. Your airtime will be the key. Plans are to have two rounds and take the two times and determine the average. If there is a tie, then a 3

rd round will take place with a bonus designated spot landing in the grass.

3. Winners circle: 1st 2

nd and 3

rd

4. Heli’s are welcome if you want to test out your auto-rotation skills! As the event concludes, please bring your favorite beverage and a dish to pass. The grills will be available for preparing any items needed for finalizing an enjoyable evening with your members, family and friends. As the spring daylight hours offer more flying time toward the evening, pilots are encouraged to bring out any of the vintage aircraft for making a few last passes before sunset. The “airspace” will look great with some cubs, bi-planes and maybe a couple of pups! Looking forward to seeing you at the field and starting practicing your one minute glide. Fly safe, JT

Chief Flight Instructor’s Report Dan Compton – [email protected]

Welcome to the warmer weather and all of the new pilots who can't wait to get their new craft into the air. We have had quite a few marvelous flying days which have brought pilots out of hibernation to dust off those wings and get into the air. Cliff Fullhart and I have been instructing several new pilots who have ventured out to the flying field recently. Dick Johnson, pictured here has had several flights on his new trainer which was

powered by an OS .40 with nitro. Dick decided that his apartment was not set up for the storage of nitro fuel and I guess he did not like the smell etc. of nitro so he converted to electric. Since the conversion, Dick has had several 15 to 20 minute flights with Cliff and about four flights with me to get used to flying. Dick is doing very well. If you are looking to convert to electric, look for Dick at the field for some hints. Two of our junior members, Connor Weddle and Jack Mayes both have the electric super cub and have been getting training from Cliff and me. Both boys are 12 years old and for a birthday present, Connor gave Jack a FVAC membership. Welcome to the club Connor and Jack. Connor also has an electric helicopter which he is trying to learn to fly. I was recently contacted by member Mark Dolan who I instructed for a short time last fall before cold weather set in. Mark has had several flights with me and is ready to get the cobwebs out and start flying again. Mark and I have scheduled some buddy cord time for next week, weather permitting. Welcome back, Mark. Put it on your calendars, Kids Day Event will be on May 16th. Let your friends know about the event. Last year we had close to 100 young pilots come out and try out flying. We should have a good turnout this year as well. Dan Compton - Chief Flight Instructor
