NOVEMBER 2009 THE FLYC TELLTALE

Folsom Lake Yacht Club Calls itQuits!

The Club’s Assets Donated to the State

Pretty disturbing headline, isn’t it! It’s not true, at leastnot yet.

What makes up a club like ours? It’s not the races, meeting, or other activities. It’s not the boats or club-house. It’s the people. It’s the people who get in-volved. It’s the people who make the club what it is.

It’s not the people who pay their dues year in and yearout without participating (though they are greatly appre-ciated). It’s the people who participate. It’s the peoplewho attend the races, come to the meetings and theparties.

But even more so, it’s the people who help run theclub. It’s the officers who put in many, many hours allyear long. It’s people like Bob Carl, who spends I don’tknow how many hours putting the Telltale togethermonth after month. It’s people like Mack Bishop whospent the year begging and pleading for people to runthe races. It’s the people like them, and a shockinglyfew others who are the lifeblood of the club.

What if the Bobs, Macks, Steves, Kerrys, Johns, Scottsand Lanettes of the club were to vanish? What aboutthe Georges and Bobs? What would be left of theclub? Would that made up headline become reality?Would you step up to help fill the vacuum?

What I’m trying to say is that the club needs volunteersand new blood to continue. As an example, I’vewatched (and helped where I could) Mack try to getpeople to help with race committee. And I’ve watchMike before him, and Rob before him, and before that itwas me, all begging for people to come up to run theraces.

You need to get involved, and you need to get others toget involved. What about your neighbor in the slip nextto yours? The guy down the street who’s boat is for-ever sitting in the driveway?

Annual Meeting

On November 14th, we are having our annual meeting/party/let’s have fun night at Cattleman’s Restaurant inRoseville. This will be a great time and place to get re-involved in the club.

This is our annual meeting, so it is also when we electour officers for the upcoming year. These are thenominations I’ve already received:

As you can see, two of our current board membershave chosen not to continue. I’d like to thank bothMack Bishop and Tom Clark for their service over thelast year.

What this means is that we need people to fill out theboard. In addition to these two roles, there are a fewother positions I would like to see filled. Here is a briefdescription of the roles that need to be filled:

Vice Commodore – Responsible for ensuring RaceCommittee for each race, as well as acquiring the tro-phies.

Member-At-Large – Attend board meetings

Camellia Cup Chair – Coordinate all of the activitiesand details required to run the Camellia Cup regatta.See the discussion below about proposed changes tothe 2010 Camellia Cup regatta.

Program Coordinator – I’ll be the first to admit that ourmonthly meetings have become stale, boring, and notreally worth attending anymore. I’d like to get someonewho can bring in speakers or other presentations foreach meeting.

Outreach Coordinator – We should have someone whois capable of representing the club at outside events. These events could be governmental, could involveother clubs (coordinating schedules, for example), andworking with regional bodies (PICYA, YRA, etc.). In anideal world, this is something the commodore shoulddo, but this is something I know I am very bad at doing.

Please consider making the club better by volunteeringto fill one of these positions.(continued, see “Calls it Quits” on page 3

2010 Schedule and Camellia Cup

In other news, we held our 2010 scheduling meeting acouple of weeks ago. We think we have the scheduleset for most of the events. However, most of the timewas spent talking about the Camellia Cup (and Trans-Folsom).

An idea was floated that maybe we should break theCamellia Cup into two weekends (like the High Sierraregatta). Associated with that, another idea is that wewould incorporate the Trans-Folsom regatta into theKeelboat weekend as the Saturday event, leaving Sun-day for around-the-buoys racing.

There are a lot of details and issues to be worked outbefore this can be done, but I’d like to spend some timeat the annual meeting discussing this thought. I will bescheduling a board meeting early in December, wherewe will make the final decision.

With the rest of the schedule, we made a few changes. Most of the changes revolve around reducing the num-ber of racing days, primarily to reduce the need for racecommittee and to try to get more boats out to eachevent). The major changes include going with just twoseries, each with 4 race days, and combining the Ladyand the Tramp with the Katheryn Eavenson regatta.

Another idea is each fleet would be assigned specificraces, and it will be up to the fleet to determine whichfleet member(s) would put on that particular race. Thiswould help reduce the amount of work required from theperson in the Vice-Commodore role.

We will probably publish the schedule in early Decem-ber.

That’s about it for now. Hope to see you all on the 14th

at Cattleman’s.

Mark

NOVEMBER 2009 THE FLYC TELLTALE

Treasurer's ReportScott Fredrickson

The money from the Morgan Stanley account is nowlocked up for the next year in a Bank of America CD,earning an interest rate of 1.2%. I was picking up theMS folder from Lanette, had just come from the postoffice, and coincidentally there was a letter from MS -- aprospectus for our old account! So we opened it.While we may not be delighted with the BofA interestrate, the rate stated in the prospectus was 0.01% (and$100/year account fee). Combining the $70 interest, plus the $100 we won't be spending on the account feethis year, the CD is about equal to 1 membership fee.Welcome Mr. CD!! Or is it Ms. CD……….

Because most of our financial activity is in the winter andspring, next year I would like to consider a second,short-term CD for the monies we won't be using duringthe summer and fall. Now that I know a CD is essen-tially another account, with all the documentation re-quired for a business, I may shop around for a betterrate. I had assumed it would be a FLYC sub-accountwith no hassles. Wrong.

The Commodore and I have put together the packagefor the Franchise Tax Board. With Gary Preston's helpI put together a 'Cash Flow' (Statement of Financial Ac-tivities) and 'Balance Sheet' (Statement of Financial Ac-tivities) from his 2008 data. Mark wrote a very compactletter describing what FLYC is about. A copy of thebylaws and we're all set. We'll see what they have tosay, if anything.

During this process I found out that the IRS is now re-quiring yearly electronic filing of Form 990-N, and I willbe addressing that soon. I tried to get a look at theform, but you have to 'register' first. The usual registra-tion form, emailed password, login, etc. hassle. I founda set of instructions and screenshots on where else? --Google -- and the form itself really is simple.

P.O. Box 156

Google is inviting us to advertise!! Again!! They sentus another $100 coupon to start our account. I wasn'tgoing to think about it. But on the other hand, we havea website, just like Google. We could host ads, justlike Google. We could get rich,...........nah.

I'm anxiously awaiting the Chevron bill. For months, literally, I have been trying to arrange for e-billing be-cause, in theory, they charge $5 to mail a hard-copy.No luck. But, because I'm trying, they haven't chargedus the fee. However, by the time they snail-mail it, Iget it from Folsom and get a check to the other end ofthe country, we often end up with a late fee of a couplebucks. On a $15 bill. Annoying.

The Bureau of Reclamation sent a press release(release date 10/19/09) inviting participation in publicmeetings for the '2 Gates' project in the Delta to controlwater turbidity to help protect the Delta smelt at criticaltimes of the year. Those meetings begin 10/27. Ap-parently they think 8 days, including mailing time, isplenty of notification time. And that these gates willhave negligible environmental effect. And that Folsomwould take 5 years to fill. It took 1. And it refills al-most every year!!

The Bay and Delta Yachtsman, in addition to the geor-geous cover shot of a sailboat with the cityfront as abackdrop, has a short article and a few pictures (pg 40)of plastic junk in the Pacific vortex. There is a You-Tube link for more photos. Having seen nearly pris-tine Mexican beaches in the late 70's, and now, I'm notsurprised, but it is disheartening. Polypropylenefloats. Forever.
