IN THE BEGINNING….KHAN ACADEMY
• “A free world-class education for anyone anywhere.” • Video tutoring sessions for Khan’s cousins became
YouTube Sensation, 2008 • Over one million students per month • Over 2000 teaching videos & screencasts Khan Academy: https://www.khanacademy.org/about Sal Khan on TED Talk: https://www.khanacademy.org/talks-and-interviews/key-

FOUR PILLARS OF FLIPPED LEARNING
Flexible Intentional
Learning Culture
Professional Educators
http://www.flippedlearning.org/cms/lib07/VA01923112/Centricity/Domain/41/ExecSummary_FlippedLearnig.pdf
Flexible: Variety of learning modes, students choose when &
where
Intentional: Teacher plans
what they need to teach & what
students can learn on their own
Learning Culture: Teacher becomes
“guide on the side” instead of
“sage on the stage”
Professional Educators:
Teacher observation of
students at work fuels richer
learning

BLENDED LEARNING TYPES
Staker & Horn, May 2012
1. STATION ROTATION
• Discretionary assignment to station • 1 or more online stations • Traditional stations (full group, small group, tutoring,
paper/pencil) Traditional Rehearsal: Sectional for weak singers at piano with director, other students do written assignment. Flipped Rehearsal: Students practice and/or study theory & ear training online. Rehearsal focuses on elements beyond note learning.
2. LAB ROTATION • Assigned station rotation for all • At least 1 on-line station in a different room in the
school. (i.e.computer lab) Traditional Rehearsal: Singing tests at piano with director alternating with written work at seats. Flipped Rehearsal: Singing test based on online score, those who took it online rehearse with director while others take their singing test in a practice room with recording device (with or without assessment software.) Students can share recordings & documents with teacher using Google Drive or cloud based software.

3. FLIPPED CLASSROOM
• Students rotate on a fixed schedule between face-to-face teacher-guided practice in school
• Online delivery of content and instruction outside of class time
• The student controls time, place, path, pace of online delivery of instruction
Flipped Rehearsal: School web page is set up with links to online resources and/or software sends out assignments to be completed. Knowledge and skills gained enable students to work collaboratively and actively in class. Students take leadership roles and ownership in flexible groups based on their preparation.
4. INDIVIDUAL ROTATION
• Students rotate on an independent schedule between face-to-face teacher-guided practice in school
• Online delivery of content and instruction outside of class time based on astute observations and assessment data.
• The student controls time, place, path, pace of online delivery of instruction
Flipped Rehearsal: Gifted student prepares for college entrance audition with teacher guidance and on-line resources at home and/or during class time. Student sings for the class in a mock audition. The mock audition is recorded and posted to a private YouTube channel for further review by the student.

AND VICE VERSA….
FLIPPED LEARNING RESEARCH FINDINGS
“In general, teachers who are flipping their classrooms report
• higher student achievement,
• increased student engagement,
• better attitudes toward learning and school.
Many flipped teachers report that their job satisfaction has
improved and are feeling re-energized by their heightened
interaction with students.
This initial research suggests that the Flipped Learning model is promising and warrants further inquiry.”

STUDENT’S VIEW
11th grader, Sophia Pink, spent 10th grade online: “I began my sabbatical (from school) by taking three online courses
through a Johns Hopkins University distance-learning program for high school students….Instead of sitting in a specific seat at a specific time, listening to the same long lecture as everyone else, I could tailor the classes to my strengths and weaknesses….Not only did online courses free up time to shoot a movie, they helped me learn as well as I would have in a classroom. In four months, I covered a year of math.
However, as I realized studying chemistry, online courses weren’t perfect substitutes. I missed one of the biggest benefits of the classroom: working with a small group of students.”

Flexible environments offer individualization
Culture shift follows trends in college & business
Teachers has much greater understanding of student competencies
Interactive, self-paced instruction for student using web resources
Active learning strategies, problem-based learning can be chaotic
Less access to technology in k-12 education than college or business
Takes time & training Difficulty retaining full
group’s attention?
