WMS GATE PROGRAM For those new to Windsor schools, GATE stands for Gifted & Talented/Enrichment in our district. Stu-dents are placed in my explanatories based on educational needs, with our goal being to advance their ability, creativity, and task commitment. All WMS students are invited to sign up for Chess Club, Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, Math Counts, Lego League and other special activities. Be sure to listen to morning announce-ments and watch the school web page for dates of upcoming events. This quarter my GATE 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in I-Search classes will be answering the question, “What makes a strong civilization, to what makes a strong citizen.” They will research ancient civilizations to pre-sent day constitutions in order to gather a base of knowledge to create their own civilization. They will in-clude the arts of theater, architecture, free trade, politics, and more in their iBook presentations. Students will also meet with mentors at UNC theater and political science department while exploring campus life.

In 6th Grade my reading classes use their logical, critical reading skills to chart character growth and watch for red herrings in their novels. We enjoy reading classic stories as we compare literature that stands the test of time with modern literature of today. To give the students a deeper understanding of the Western Hemisphere countries they will be reading “The Cay’ and Up Front magazines that tie into their social stud-ies curriculum.

Next quarter Ms. Brunner will sign teach a sign language class in which studentswill explore the culture and language of the deaf community during the explore block rotation for 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Students will work to gain the skills needed to communicate in a second language. They will then prepare lessons to present for the preschoolers and build conversation skills so they can ask questions of our hearing impairedguests by the end of the quarter. WMS Chess Club is in its 21st year; we hope to have over 60 participants. Practice/game time is during lunch on Wednesdays in the lunchroom starting second quarter. Win or loose each chess club member is giv-en a free raffle ticket and the chance to win chessboards and T-Shirts. Contact Ms. Brunner at 686-8200 x3000 if you are willing to help. Chess Club members are given a pass to the front of the lunch line on Wednesday. I welcome help with any of these projects and look forward to a year of learning with my students and com-munity mentors.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS Joni Heiden, RN, School Nurse Lisa Penate, RN, School

Immunization requirements continue to expand and change from year to year. On January 17, 2007, the Col-orado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Board of Health approved additional vaccine require-

ments. The following immunizations will be required prior to the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year:

Preschool, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade students will be required to have one varicella (chickenpox)

vaccine or documentation that they have had the disease.

Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will be required to have two doses of varicella

(chickenpox) vaccine or documented disease history from a health care provider.

Preschool - 12th grade students will be required to have the Hepatitis B series (three immunizations at ap-

propriate intervals).

Kindergarten-12th grade students will be required to have two MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccines.

Preschool students are required to have one MMR.

Preschool-12th grade students are required to have DTaP/ DT/Td and OPV/IPV vaccines. Please refer to

minimum requirements for specific grades in each health room.

Students entering 6th through 12th grades will be required to have a Tdap vaccine.

Preschool students are required to have the Hib (Haemophilus Influenza type b) vaccine. The number of dos-

es required depends on the student’s current age and the age when the Hib vaccine was administered.

The Hepatitis A vaccine (series of 2 immunizations) is highly recommended in Weld County but not required

for school entry.

Medical, personal and religious exemptions are available in each health room. A medical exemption must be signed by your child’s physician; personal and religious exemptions may be signed by parents. Please call

Joni at 686-8075 or Lisa at 686-8076 if you have questions about these requirements. Thank you.

The Windsor-Severance Fire Depart-ment has asked that we DO NOT use their parking lot for any of our school activities. This would present a problem for them in the event of an emergency. Thanks for your at-

tention to this!

FIRE STATION PARKING ART AND TECHNOLOGY MATERIALS FEES

Students participating in either art or industrial technology are to pay a $3.00 art materials fee or $5.00 shop materials fee for the costs of supplies and materials. We ask that fees are paid at the beginning of each quarter that the student is in that class. Thanks for your attention in this

matter!

ADDRESS CHANGES

Please notify us of address, phone number, or other relevant information changes on your stu-dent so we can make sure our

records are accurate. Thanks!

BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION!

It is time once again to begin collecting BoxTops for Education! This program, sponsored by General

Mills, has helped schools earn extra money for many years. As part of the 6th grade fundraising effort, we

use these funds for field trips and other activities throughout the school year.

This year, the program has grown again! You’ll find BoxTops coupons on many new brands in the gro-cery store, including General Mills, Pills-

bury, Green Giant, Totino’s, Progresso, Kleenex, Ziplock and Gold Medal products. Look for the poster in the front hallway with all participat-

ing products. Also, watch for special bonus BoxTops on back to school items and your grocery reciepts. Help us double our reward and start

clipping now!

We also have a student reward program. Neatly clip 30 Box Tops. Write the student name, Connections teacher and number of labels

on the bag or envelope of BoxTops. Bring the BoxTops to Ms. Miller, 6th grade math teacher; room 608. The student will receive a large candy

bar as a reward! If the student is in 6th grade, they will also win points for their section 1 class. The 6th grade class with the most points at the end

of the year wins a pizza party!

There is also a new program for parents! It is called the BoxTops Boosters. Register online at www.Boxtops4education.com. We will

receive points for each booster we register, resulting in Bonus BoxTops.

Please, help make this our best Box Tops year yet! Thanks for your support! For further information, please contact Ms. Miller through Windsor

PROJECT A+ FROM TYSON FOODS

We have an exciting opportunity to raise as much as $12,000 for our school this year! We are taking part in a na-

tional fund-raising program sponsored by Tyson Foods, Inc. It is called Tyson® Project A+™. As a participating

Project A+ school, we can raise money for books, field trips, computers, improvements to our buildings — any-

thing we want. All we have to do to participate is clip and save Project A+ redemption labels from Tyson products

that feature the Project A+ logo. Each label we collect is worth 24¢ for our school!

This year, our goal is to collect a total of 1000 redemption labels so that we can help defray costs for our overnight

camping trip to Estes Park in the spring. Our school’s Tyson Project A+ coordinator is Ms. Miller. These count just as box tops for a candy bar

only you need to turn in 10 for the candy bar. Once we collect a minimum of 100 labels, we’ll submit them to Tyson Foods. Then we’ll be on

our way to meeting this year’s goal! Please help us out — and ask your friends, neighbors and relatives to help, as well. Please clip and save Ty-

son Project A+ redemp-tion labels from various Tyson products. Then drop them off at the office during regular school hours.

If you’d like more information about the Tyson Project A+ program, please contact Ms. Miller through Windsor Middle School at 686-8200 or

check out the Tyson Project A+ Web site, http://ProjectAPlus.tyson.com.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAVINGS FROM SAFEWAY

We are also collecting Back to School savings points from Safeway as well. You should get a receipt with a total amount that can be credited to

our school. Please check Safeway for the details. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! The 6th grade team.
