Principalrsquos PostBrisbane Christian College minus Reaching New Heights Over the last three weeks I have visited three schools in Sydney been encouraged to love Jesus more at the Hillsong Conference and attended the Associated Christian Schoolsrsquo training days with our staff I was challenged inspired and refreshed

As the new term begins I would like to welcome all our new families and children into our caring College we have created history with more families in our College community than ever before with over 520 students This has been an amazing 18 months as we have witnessed the Lordrsquos favour in every aspect of Brisbane Christian College During last term our children reached new heights of achievement on the sporting field on the stage and in the classroom As you read this edition of The Flame you will gain a better understanding of

the aspirations efforts and achievements of our staff and students and the growing commitment of your College to holistic excellence minus where no one is left behind

Mr Ross Eggins and Mrs Laraine Tanzer and the team are continuing to develop innovative and deliberate structures to ensure that our students reach their full potential while propelling Brisbane Christian College into becoming one of the leading academic and leadership Colleges in our State As a College we desire to honour our Lord by being HIS light and salt in every area of our community It is imperative that we expect and desire our children to reach new heights as we deliberately seek to be the best we can be This is our heart and I am pleased to report that we are moving strongly towards this goal May God bless you richly

Pastorrsquos NoteReaching New HeightsIsaiah 4031 (NKJV) But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength They shall mount up with wings like eagles They shall run and not be weary They shall walk and not faint

I love the image of mounting up with wings like eagles Eagles soar seemingly unaffected by anything that is

happening below I have a friend who used to fly FA-18 fighter jets for the RAAF He once nearly hit an eagle at 25000 feet Now that is some serious soaring Godrsquos plan for us is that we lsquosoarrsquo not flap ndash that we lsquorunrsquo without growing weary I have found that running takes commitment I have recently recommenced the exercise habit after a couple of months off and found that what was easy is no longer so Extra kilos are never an advantage here If we are to run and not grow weary then we first need a commitment to run to grow to reach I like what the Apostle Paul says in Philippians 313 lsquoForgetting those things which are behind and reaching toward those things which are aheadrsquo and in Hebrews 121 lsquolet us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us and let us run with endurancersquo Is there some lsquoweightrsquo or something in your past that you are bringing into today that is affecting your ability to run and soar Perhaps today is the day to let that go and look to the future full of promise and possibility and commit to lsquosoarrsquo higher and lsquorunrsquo further Have an amazingly blessed day

Welcome to Sweet Valley High a perfect world full of perfect teens with every possible clique you could imagine ndash cheerleaders eggheads emos homies jocks and even those lovable red neck yokels With the upcoming musical Zac Teflon and Vanessa Huggins plan to unleash their extraordinary talents and prove once again why everyone loves them why they embody the Disney spirit Enter the proverbial fly in the ointment a redheaded exchange student Rufus When Rufus arrives everything becomes lsquoundisneyfiedrsquo What will Principal Scribble and the zany staff and students do especially with an upcoming visit from the American President to their school Can egghead Scarlett save the day and bring the universe back into alignment of the Disney way

It is going to be a musical to remember So if you want a fun night filled with laughs as we watch our students send up that colossal juggernaut known as Disney Enterprises come along to the Life Church auditorium on

Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 July at 700pm Tickets are available for purchase at the door on performance nights $7 for adults and $5 for studentschildren There will also be the obligatory mugs dvds lunchboxes t-shirts jerseys and babushka dolls for sale on the night ndash only kidding

Secondary Speech AssemblyIt has been quite a while since the last Secondary School Speech Assembly but like the Primary Schoolrsquos it is likely to become a mainstay on the calendar for the future It was a great opportunity for students to utilise their public speaking skills to represent and compete for their House The students were given the topic of lsquoThe Futurersquo and the variety of student interpretations and visions of the future were astounding All the speeches were presented very well and judged by Mr Eggins Mr Asquith Miss Palmer and Miss Walsh The winner of the Years 7-9 Speech Award was Grace with a great visionary exploration of the future of chocolate ndash a favourite of Mr Eggins The excellent speech of Anieth who passionately shared her dreams of the future was the clear winner of the Years 10-12 Speech Award Honourable mentions go to Susu and Jessica both within ten points of first place Truly the future is bright if the Secondary Speech Assembly is any indication

Explore your options Thursday 9 August and Thursday 18 October 630pm-800pmParents and students for Years 910 and 11 are invited to explore their apprenticeship and traineeship options at our upcoming Pathway of Excellence Apprenticeship evenings Hear about the experience of our current Pathway of Excellence Apprenticeship students talk to one of our current employers about the program and ask questions Eats and refreshments will be provided RSVP required

POE ApprenticeshipsPathway of Excellence Apprenticeships has just completed its first semester with outstanding results Our students have experienced regular classroom teaching with four subjects contributing towards a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) Students also spent four week blocks out in the workforce doing work experience in the industries that they are interested in Some examples are child care building electrical and plumbing The idea is that students are seeking a School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SAT)

We have seen students who were once struggling to stay focused on their schoolwork able to find new meaning and hope with the Program They have seen the value of apprenticeships and traineeships and that God has a special future for them Students Joel Hayley and Liam have already secured their School-based Traineeships through their hard work and diligence Kyall and Mitchell have also impressed employers enough to secure their School-based Apprenticeships Some students are still discovering which career is the best fit for them and are working towards securing positions for the future

ANZAC Day ChapelOn Thursday 26 April our Primary School gathered for a special Chapel service in the newly renovated auditorium to remember all soldiers past and present We solemnly reflected on the contribution of the people who fought the peace-keepers and those who died in wars defending Australia especially the original ANZACs in Gallipoli The program included two very special guests past soldiers who fought for Australia and all the Year 6s read Psalm 23 and sang a worship song Through this chapel event I understood more about the history of ANZAC Day and now I give even more respect and admiration to the brave soldiers and appreciate those who sacrificed to bring peace to Australia

Primary School Speech AssemblyThe auditorium was full and parents quietly sat at the back cameras in hand ready to record their child on stage

Despite the nerves our students shone brightly having rehearsed their speeches many times in the weeks leading up to the event on Wednesday 30 May

Each class had a poem to recite in unison with accompanying actions A variety of topics were presented ranging from lsquoGluttonous Boys rsquoBear Huntingrsquo and multilingual greetings

The individual presentations highlighted the great ability within our College All students spoke with confidence and clarity

It was great to showcase the skills of both students and teachers who were well prepared for the occasion Special congratulations go to the winners though no one would have envied the role of the adjudicators who did a fabulous job

Now to find for that poem for next yearrsquos recital

Year 23W students have been learning about food production and processing in our SOSE unit From the Farm to Your Fork We went to Woolworths at Moorooka to see how they change (or process) the food before we buy it We were able to look behind the scenes to see how the butchers make mince how the vegetables and fruit are made ready for the shelves and we even saw a baker cooking donuts

We learned that everyone who works in the fresh food areas must wear a hairnet and we had to wear them too All fresh food department staff must also wash their hands before starting work and they must wear gloves all the time Another thing we learnt was that there are alarms on the fridges and freezers in case someone leaves the door open because a change in temperature could spoil the food

Mrs Donna WilliamsYear 23W Teacher

There were smiles all round on our teamrsquos faces toward the end of Gala Day The practice and cheering had paid off The girls and their coach went home chuffed with the results

College Fun RunOur College Fun Run was another exciting highlight on this termrsquos calendar This year we had the added bonus of a practice set up as the first attempt was cancelled at the last minute due to rain On the day of the race spirits were high and as usual students ran with enthusiasm and courage House pride and commitment were obvious from the oldest students right down to the Primary students The obvious winner of lsquoHouse unityrsquo on the day was of course Bernall who always go out to have fun and enjoyment whatever the competition The run through Toohey Forest is always a challenge but the reward of finishing strong at the end is worth the effort The day produced many brilliant results and paved the way for the largest ever College representation at the Christian Schools Sporting Association carnival Brisbane Christian College was represented with great success by ninety students at this carnival

Mr Gordon Hooker Head of House - Bernall

CSAA Secondary Cross CountryThe Christian Schools Sport Association [CSSA] Cross Country carnival was held on Tuesday 8 May at Limestone Park Ipswich The day started off with students arriving at College bright and early and being taken by coach to our destination Arriving we saw the other schools setting up their marquees and warming up around the track As the day went on the races started Everyone ran their race did their best and thankfully there were no major casualties After all the races had been run we packed up and headed back to school but before we got there we were rewarded by getting an ice cream each from McDonalds

With the help of Alyssa and Sharleen who both came along to help with the time records of the races I can proudly say that our school put in a lot of effort on the day

We placed 2nd out of eight schools in our division and both Anthony and Angel finished in the top ten Mr Allen-Ankins was delighted with our student results noting that this year we had the highest student participation wersquove ever had as a College A big thank you to all the teachers and students who made it possible for us to go and represent our College in such an awesome competition ndash it was a great day

Athletics CarnivalA brisk morning with clear skies was the perfect setting for the successful annual Athletics Carnival As students arrived the excitement was tangible and it was clear that it was going to be a carnival to be remembered It did not take long before the first record was demolished followed by a staggering thirty-five broken records The day saw students from as young as Year 4 to the established Year 12s compete and participate to give their House the winning edge House spirit among students urged competitors to give their utmost for their House Competition was fierce and it was not until the results of the 800m event were taken into account that Livingstone House was able to emerge as winners of the Carnival Bernall House successfully secured the runners-up position closely followed by a worthy Pascal House

Sandstorm - Battle on the Beach Throughout Term 2 a number of students from Years 8-12 have represented the College at the Sandstorm Battle on the Beach Series This series involves soccer netball and touch football and the competition is always fierce

We had four teams compete in the soccer competition made up of an Under-15 Boys team an Open Girls team and two Open Boys teams Every athlete participated with great spirit and sportsmanship against various schools around Brisbane The Open Boys were the Champion team for their division while our Open Girls were outstanding all day only to go down in the final and finish as runners up

One group of girls went on to represent the College in the Open Netball competition They competed hard and finished in third place

Our largest squad yet attended the Beach Touch competition in which we had nominated six teams Unfortunately due to some fixture errors some of our teams had to amalgamate together in order to play While this could have very easily disrupted the play of our teams they stuck together to produce some outstanding performances Our Open Boys once again finished on top of the competition in an lsquoextra timersquo win after coming from two tries down earlier in the match The Open Girls fell agonisingly short in the final to be the runners up again in a great team effort

Overall we showed that the College can be a real force in various sporting endeavours and look forward to building on that for the Term 4 Battle on the Beach Series and in many years to come

10Outback AdventurersThe Year 8 Outback Adventure began with twenty-five students on Sunday 27 May Over the course of the week we had the incredible opportunity to travel over 2000km and yet this allowed us to take a glimpse into what is a small fraction of our expansive state

The highlights included

Exploring a luxury jet at the Qantas Founders Museum

Camping out in subzero temperatures (well it felt really cold anyway)

Climbing all over the old farm equipment at Machinery Mile

Meeting up with our friends from Emerald Christian College

Seeking our fortune fossicking for sapphires in Rubyvale

Enjoying bush poetry and damper around the campfire

Other special events were

The one-man show at the Australian Stockmanrsquos Hall of Fame

A sunset cruise with two friendly possums on the Thomson River and

Miles and miles and miles of beautiful outback scenery

Mrs Christine ThomasSecondary School Teacher

Canberra CapersOur wonderful Year 7 students and their favourite teachers Mr Lloyd and Miss Walsh went on an amazing trip to our Nationrsquos capital with fellow students from Emerald Christian College It was an exciting trip and the students got to experience a wide variety of historically significant places such as the Canberra War Memorial (which was a big hit with our students) new and old Parliament House as well as fun places such as Questacon and Cockington Green They really enjoyed seeing where laws are formed and experiencing what makes our country politically unique They got to role-play a bill being debated and passed in the House of Representatives It was a long trip in the bus getting there (about sixteen hours each way) but the bus drivers made it fun with lots of interesting facts and fiction The students loved getting to know other Christian young people from Emerald and establishing friendships Overall it was a worthwhile and unforgettable experience

Our Collegersquos Athletics Carnival has set a new bench mark for House enthusiasm and student participation Notwithstanding the wonderful individual achievements of our athletes it was very evident that the entire College student body from Years 4-12 were heavily occupied in the dayrsquos proceedings Students of all age groups in attendance were swept up in the

fervour generated largely by the House Captains and Senior Students resulting in high levels of contagious house spirit A number of College records tumbled as students gave their all Congratulations to Mr Allen-Ankins for his wonderful work in putting the event together

Our studentsrsquo speaking talents were also on display in recent weeks in our inaugural Secondary Speech Assembly Our students clearly prepared with immense dedication and delivered their speeches with sincerity and great confidence This was a very entertaining afternoon for not only those who spoke but for all those in attendance This was yet another opportunity for Brisbane Christian College students to grow in confidence and character as they voiced their own convictions and ideas to the remainder of their peers Well done all

We are strong believers in mentoring and encouraging the older students to live their lives as an example to students in younger year levels We are seeing this shine through the Tutor Group structure with seniors taking ever-increasing roles in important daily tasks This time not only allows students to develop their leadership skills it also aims to develop relationships across the year levels providing opportunities for Senior students to mentor and provide guidance academically and socially under the careful eye of the Tutor teacher

As we reach for new heights I would like to make special mention of two new initiatives within the Primary School Parent Representatives who will work alongside our teachers giving support where needed building a stronger school community and an after- school Tutoring program which will begin in Term 3 helping to build even stronger students These are exciting days our Primary School is reaching for new heights

Mrs Laraine TanzerHead of Primary School

The first Gala Day was held on Friday 4 May 2012 at the Indians Baseball Club in Runcorn We arrived with our big yellow marquee and Mrs Bernard helped us set up Nominated players of the day were Bronte for her skill in pitching and Alani for an awesome job catching several opponents out Here are our great results below

At the Gala Day we practised and arranged our positions before we went onto the field Our first game against Kuraby State School was a very competitive and tiring game Unfortunately we lost by 20 The next game was against Calamvale Community College which was a very active game but another loss by 30

Our third game against Runcorn Heights State School was a victory for us we won 04 Our last game was against Robertson State School which was a very interesting and close game we tied with Robertson State School 11 We had a great day and everyone played well

Our Primary School has excitedly seen answered prayer this term as new students and their families have joined our College We have celebrated special events in which our students and teachers have grown Our student leaders have continued to show growth in responsibility and maturity in their roles Our classrooms have been places of diligence with special attention going to our Year 3 and Year 5 students strongly

completing NAPLAN tests Our older students have had new successes at sporting events ndash Gala Days and Cross Country

Heads of HouseThe Heads of House in the Secondary College have a great passion for students and their pastoral care needs We want all our students to have a positive schooling experience We have a burden for our students and want to help them become good strong upstanding members of society

Brisbane Christian College is all about the students The Heads of House strive to help students through their school life Students like to work in a positive environment in addition schools are happy when students are happy One of the best ways to help the students to be happy is to show them that we have their best interests in mind

Page 10: The FLAME - Brisbane Christian College...celebration on Sunday, 3 June was a special event with Life Church and Brisbane Christian College parents, students and staff gathering for
