JIM AITKIN 1942-2012Our hearts are heavy. The Flamborough Chamber of Com-

merce (FCC) – and indeed the entire ‘com-munity of communities’ that we know andlove as Flamborough – is saddened at newsof the passing of James ‘Jim’ Aitkin. As theowner of Rankin’s Environmental Services,Jim was a charter member of the FCC – andremained a faithful and involved memberduring our 30-year history.

During my dozen years at the Flambor-ough Review and over the past 8 years at theFCC, Jim became a trusted friend and ad-viser. There are few people more concernedabout Flamborough’s wellbeing and bestinterests than Jim.

He would often drop in unexpected toshare his thoughts and opinions – and Ialways made time to listen to him as I knewwhat he had to say was important. Alwaysreferring to me simply as ‘AK,’ he wouldeven phone me from his beloved Arizonawinter home to share his perspectives.

When I underwent emergency bypasssurgery on Christmas Day in 2008, Jim –

who courageously faced a myriad of seriousmedical challenges – was among the first toprovide support and comfort.

The last time I saw Jim was at the Janu-ary meeting of the Flamborough BreakfastClub, co-hosted by the FCC and the RotaryClub of Flamborough AM. As you can seefrom the picture at left – taken at the meet-ing – Jim was in fine form, sharing histhoughts on the Millgrove truck route fiascowith Ward 15 Councillor Judi Partridge.

To his wife Joyce and his sons Chris andPaul – as well as to his extended (and verylarge) circle of family, friends, colleaguesand admirers – the FCC extends its deepestsympathies.

May we all find comfort – and delight –in Jim’s legacy.

Friends were received at the KitchingSteepe & Ludwig Funeral Home and thefuneral service was held at St. James UnitedChurch on Sunday, March 18 followed by areception at the Waterdown Legion.

When asked to describeSandy Gray, a member of theDundas-Ancaster-Flamboroughclub of Soroptimists Inter-national - or SIDAF for short -used these words: “Passionate,hard working, funny, generous toa fault, social, lives life fullyevery day, lives large, fun loving,doting grandmother, leader, loud(sometimes), gets things done,resourceful, charitable, reliable,smart, loves Martinis”

And then she added: “I knowI’ve missed a few.”

But she wasn’t through.When asked of Sandy’s im-

pact as a member of SIDAF, shesaid: “Well, it's never been thesame since she joined. We loveher. She has moved the clubalong in a way ‘that only Sandycan.’ I call it ‘Sandy’s Way.’ Hermotto is simple: ‘Lead, follow orget out my way.’”

This SIDAF member nailed.it. In a nutshell, she has de-scribed Sandy Gray.

Sandy was born in Oakville,raised in Burlington and movedto Waterdown at 15 years oldwhen her parents purchasedWeeks of Waterdown. Sandy andher partners - husband Steveand brother David Smith - pur-chased the business from herparents in 1987 and built andopened the store in its presentlocation in 1989.

Sandy and Steve raised theirfamily in Flamborough and theirtwo children Erin and Brandonare now both married and havehomes in Waterdown.

Sandy isn’t sure where herdesire to help others came from.Or when it started. Her earliestrecollection was the desire tohave the fullest UNICEF box atHalloween as child. And sheremembers the many bike-a-thons she participated in as ateen.

When her children attendedBalaclava School, Sandy - ofcourse - became part of theschool’s Annual Fun Fair commit-tee. She was asked to run thesilent auction. She implementedmany changes of how that fund-raiser operated over the years -along with the expectations ofthe proceeds of that event.

The earliest ‘public’ eventsthat Sandy remembers organiz-ing were the charity barbequesthat she hosted a few times ayear at the store - with her kidsErin and Brandon assisting. Foreach of the cook-outs, Sandywould choose a local charity asthe recipient of the proceeds.That was usually the Flambor-ough Food Bank, Animal Adop-tions of Flamborough or IntervalHouse.

Sandy’s connection withInterval House goes back to itsYellow School Bus campaign.Interval House was asking for

donations and brought a bus tothe parking lot at Fortino’s at 9a.m. on a particular Saturdaymorning. Sandy decided to stopby and give a $200 cash dona-tion. That led to a long-timefriendship with Gisela Zehmer -then with Interval House andnow with Drummond House.

At Weeks Home Hardware,Sandy always felt that it neededto help those who asked for sup-port. “As long as we had the lux-ury of making a profit, it was ourobligation to support the com-munity supporting us,” Sandysays. “I did however realize longago that as I was the one han-dling the donations that it wasup to me to make sure our busi-ness received proper recogni-tion.”

Sandy has always been‘crafty’ and had been makingsome Halloween and Christmasearrings for personal use. Shesoon realized that she couldmake ‘things’ and raise money

with what she created - and shejust happened to own a storewhere she could sell it. The rest- as they say - is history.

Over the last number ofyears Sandy has donated wellover $15,000 via these crafty ef-forts to local charities, including

The United Way, CHOICES,Drummond House as well as thecharities mentioned earlier.

The list goes on and on. There’s Sandy’s association

with the Dan Gallant MemorialCar Show and Scholarship Fundthat has created a $100,000scholarship fund at GeorgianCollege. There’s the two CanadaDay Car shows that raised mon-ey for the YMCA’s Strong Kidsand for the Flamborough Wo-men’s Resource Centre - whichhas raised over $12,500 eventhough the car shows did nothave the big push for charity.And let’s not forget the annualcar show Sandy hosts at Alex-ander Place - which is now in its6th year.

Sandy’s involvement withour community issues goes backa long way. As a woman in busi-ness, she faced numerous chal-lenges – especially a woman inthe man’s world of the hardwarebusiness. Back in the early to

mid 70’s, Sandy often faced thelack of confidence some cus-tomers had in a woman advisingthem on how to use a product.

“I was grateful to work withsome great men who knew I wascapable,” Sandy says. “But thoseconflicts made me more aware of

the adversities facing women inour world. Naturally I gravitatedtowards efforts that benefitedwomen and girls and thus my at-traction to the Soroptimist Inter-national club of Dundas, Ancas-ter, Flamborough.”

Sandy soon became thehead of fundraising for SIDAF -and the budget for communitysupport has gone from around$6,000 dollars annually to a pro-jected budget of over $20,000for 2012!

This is how Shirley Eden, thecurrent SIDAF president sums itall up: “If you want a job done,give it to a woman. If you wantit done now and you want it doneright, give it to Sandy – gener-ous, hard working and a greatwife, mother and granny.”

The Flamborough Chamberof Commerce agrees.

And the FCC knows Sandy -she is after all a past president ofthe FCC Board of Directors.

Sandy - who with her part-ners recently sold Weeks Homehardware of Waterdown - nowjoins Flamborough’s most exclu-sive club – that small number oflocal business icons who havebeen honoured with the FCC’sprestigious Lifetime Achieve-ment Award.

The following citation was shared whenthe Flamborough Chamber of Com-merce (FCC) presented its CommunityService by a Company Award to LafargeCanada at the Outstanding BusinessAchievement (OBA) Awards gala at theCarlisle Golf & Country Club.

It’s part of a huge multi-nationalconglomerate that has deep roots in theFlamborough community. For the past30 years, it has been one of the moreconsistent and reliable members of theFCC. And tonight we are honoured toshare another chapter of its story.

Last year, a monument was con-structed at the National Memorial Ar-boretum in Airewas, England - the Unit-ed Kingdom’s 150-acre sanctuary andcentre of remembrance of those whogave their lives in service of their coun-try and all other men and women whoserved.

Inspiration for the Canadianmemorial came when British Royal AirForce Flight Lieutenant Alfie Hall visitedthe National Memorial Arboretum inMay 2010 and noticed the absence of amemorial to the various Canadian air-forces that have served in the UnitedKingdom.

Lt. Hall’s own 609 West RidingSquadron had 21 Canadian pilots serv-ing alongside his own countrymen dur-ing World War II. As a result, Lt. Halldecided to spearhead a fundraisingcampaign for a monument commemo-rating the dedication and sacrifice of somany Canad-ians.

That’s where Lafarge Canada comesin, when it was asked to donate Canad-ian granite for the project by CaptainJean Houde, Deputy Flight Commanderof the 426 Squadron of the CanadianForces.

“It was an honour and a pleasure tohave been asked to participate in asmall way to the construction of amemorial to Canadian airmen and air-women.” said Vice President of Aggre-gates for Lafarge Canada Bruce Sem-kowski. “On behalf of Lafarge Canadaand all its employees, we thank CaptainHoude for this opportunity.’

Lafarge sourced the Sturgeon Falls

granite from one of its distributors -Gott Natural Stone of Feversham, whichmanufactured the granite - valued atover $100,000 - for the perimeter circle,the maple leaf and the base for the cen-tre monolith. The granite was transport-ed to CFB Trenton and then delivered toEngland on C130J Hercules aircraft.

The Lafarge Group entered theglobal ‘Dow Jones Sustainability Index’in 2010 in recognition of sustainabledevelopment actions. Lafarge placesinnovation at the heart of its priorities,working for sustainable constructionand architectural creativity.

But all of which begs a simple ques-tion. What’s the Flamborough connec-tion?

The point man on the project wasnone other than Flamborough Cham-ber of Commerce (FCC) Past PresidentJamie Kleven. A former employee at theGreensville quarry, Jamie is currentlythe general manager of FranceschiniBrothers in Mississauga, a wholly-own-ed subsidiary of Lafarge Canada.

On July 8, 2011, the monument wasdedicated. Approximately 300 peopleattended - including our own Jamie Kle-ven - as well as His Royal HighnessPrince Richard, Duke of Glouchester.

“It was an honour to be involvedwith this project and to attend the ded-ication service,” said Jamie.

“I am proud to represent both La-farge and Canada with such an impor-tant piece of history.”
