DISTRICT FACILITIES

BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Strasburg Metro Parks & Rec District Board is comprised of 5 members. The Board serves in an advisory capacity to the District in matters relating to planning, acquisition, development and operation of neighborhood, community and regional parks; open space; trails; recreation programs; and cultural programs and activities. Board Meetings are open to the public and are scheduled for the third Monday of each month beginning at 6pm at the Strasburg Recreation Center, with the exception of the February meeting on 2/16. Directors include: David Spiller, Chairman · Barney Blagg, Vice President · Lonnie Losh, Secretary · Cindy Fahey, Treasurer · Scott Gerrard, Director. DISTRICT FUNDING Strasburg Parks & Recreation District is funded by the following: Property Taxes, Specific Ownership Taxes (SOT), Lottery Proceeds (Conservation Trust Funds), Activity Fees and Sponsorships, and Competitive Grants. PROPERTY TAXES, SOTs, and LOTTERY PROCEEDS are used to maintain and operate the District. This includes paying for staff, parks maintenance and landscaping, maintenance equipment, build-ing and parks facility upkeep and repair of all the facilities listed below under District Facilities. Throughout the last 40 years, the District’s Board of Directors has been judicious in expenditure of available funds annually, living within its budget, while taking advantage of grant opportunities to improve parks and recreation facilities for all local residents. DISTRICT STAFF The Strasburg Metropolitan Parks and Recreation District would like to wish you all a Happy New Year! As we change our calendars to 2016, we are also making some changes at the Rec District. We have hired Aimee Ayers-Rivera as our new Activities Coordinator and re-shuffled some responsibilities amongst our existing Staff as well. Therefore, we wanted to take this opportunity to help clarify who to contact regard-ing our various programs, please see below. Recreation Center (1932 Burton Street): District offices, Fit Nest classes, and special event rentals. The Rec Center is the perfect place for your child’s birthday party—GIANT BOUNCE HOUSE now available! Refer to the website for rates and availability.

Legion Hall (56423 Westview Avenue): Meeting place for various activities and organizations. Home of Discovery Time Preschool. The Legion Hall is home to our local Cub Scouts and V.I.P. Seniors. On the weekends, it’s available for your family reunion, anniversary banquet, or meeting. A full kitchen, tables,

and chairs are included in your rental fee.

Community Park (Wagner Street): Gathering place for kids of all ages, including an outdoor basket-ball court and playground. Recently renovated with the help of an Open Space Grant from Adams County.

Lyons Park (Railroad Avenue): Facilities include a playground, horseshoe pits, and a covered picnic facility.

South Softball Field (1932 Burton Street): Home to the Strasburg High School State Champion-ship softball teams, youth teams, and adult coed league. Batting cages also available on site.

North Baseball Field and T-Ball Field (56401 Sunset Avenue): Funded by Adams County Open Space. Batting cages and bullpens also available on site.

Fitness Trail and Track: The fitness trail begins at the North Field and includes 10 outdoor exercise stations. It concludes at the entrance of the community track, funded by GOCO.

Five Acre Sports Park (55113 E. Bison Drive): Funded by Arapahoe County Open Space Grant, the Park includes a softball field, a multi-purpose turf field, and a playground.

Angie Graf, Executive Director, oversees the day-to-day operations of the District, including grant funding and business sponsorships. Nick Dickens, Manager of Parks & Rec, is responsible for facility maintenance and sports league management. Aimee Ayers-Rivera, Activities Coordinator, coordi-nates all youth and fitness programs and activities. Jessica Loveless, Office & Events Coordinator, coordinates special events, facility rentals, and office activities. Office hours are Monday-Thursday from 9am-5:30pm and Fridays from 9am-2pm.

STRASBURG YOUTH BASEBALL Batter up! Spring is just around the corner—time to register for summer baseball! Leagues available for ages 4-13 [age as of 4/30/16]. Registration includes jersey and hat. PRACTICE & GAMES: Practices begin in April and are held in Strasburg. Games are played in May and June and are scheduled on weeknights; however, make-up games are played on any available date, including Saturdays. Games are played in Strasburg, Bennett, Byers, and Deer Trail. AGES/COST: T-BALL (Ages 5-6): $45; ROOKIE (Ages 7-8): $60; MINOR (Ages 9-10): $70; MAJOR (Ages 11-13): $80; DEADLINE: 3/17/16 ($10 LATE FEE WILL APPLY).

EASTERN PLAINS PINK SOX SOFTBALL Summer softball is fun! The Eastern Plains Pink Sox is open to all girls from Watkins to Deer Trail, ages 6-16 [age as of 12/31/15]. Registration includes jersey and socks. PRACTICE & GAMES: Practices begin in April and are held in Strasburg. Every effort will be made to group girls according to the town they are traveling from to help with trans-portation. Games are played in May through July and are scheduled on weeknights; however, make-up games are played on any available date, including Saturdays. Games are played in Strasburg and in the Denver Metro Area. AGES/COST: 8U (Ages 6-8): $60/65; 10U (Ages 9-10): $70/75; 12U (Ages 11-12): $80/85; 14U (Ages 13-14): $85/90; DEADLINE: 3/17/16 ($10 LATE FEE WILL APPLY).

2016 OPENING DAY Opening Day Celebration will take place at the South Softball Field in Strasburg on Saturday, May 7. Friends and family are encouraged to come and watch the ceremony and parade and the Opening Day games. Join us as we celebrate the kick-off of the summer ball season!

DISCOVERY TIME PRESCHOOL Discovery Time Preschool was established in 1989 and has been serving local preschool students along the I-70 Corridor ever since. The Preschool strives to meet the developmental needs of the whole child, with emphasis on the physical and cognitive needs of each child. We are located at 56423 Westview Avenue, American Legion Hall, in Strasburg. Our program provides structured classes for children from age 2-1/2 to five. Discovery Time emphasizes so-cialization and self-expression through art, music, and hands-on activities. Choose from 2, 3, or 4-day classes. There is NO birthday cut-off date. We use the ‘Handwriting without Tears’ curriculum to provide an introduc-tion to academics. Enrollment is open throughout the school year and is based on availability. TODDLER TIME The little ones get to participate in age appropriate games, activities, and art projects. MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experienc-ing a mental health crisis. The training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of addictions and mental illnesses. During this 8-hour course you will learn signs of addictions and mental illnesses, impact of mental and substance use disorders, 5-step action plan to as-sess a situation and help, local resources and where to turn for help. PICKLEBALL OPEN GYM Pickleball is a cross between tennis, table tennis and badminton played in pairs. It is played on a court slightly smaller than a tennis court with wooden paddles and a plastic whiffle ball. The object of the game is to hit the ball so that your opponent is unable to hit it back over the net. You don’t need a set partner, just show up and play! DAYS: Mondays & Fridays TIMES: 12-2pm LOCATION: Rec Center; COST: Free.
