Pastor Joel Bacon
From the Pastor’s Desk I was sitting on a park bench, talking on my cell phone with an old friend. Kids were playing a pick-up game of soccer in the park and were using a whole range of words that would have gotten myself and most everyone I knew a mouthful of soap from our mothers, the faithful and militant defenders of clean speech. I should point out that most little boys got their mouths washed out with soap while their fathers, the ones who chances are had inadvertently taught them those words, were at work. But I digress. My friend told me about something that had
happened to him, the kind of occurrence that can only happen when someone leaves their brain at home, and I burst out, “WELL THAT’S STUPID!”
These kids, who had been talking like Marine Corps Drill Instructors, stopped their little game and said, “Mister! We don’t use that word! It’s not nice!” I felt like saying, “Okay, little Potty Mouths, but I don’t like your words either.” But I was stunned. I was wondering what was the difference between the lexicon of swear words they were using and my word, stupid. What had they been taught? Were they right?
I am a wordsmith, in speaking and writing, which I do a lot of, and I know that words matter. Word construction, word choice, attempts at irony or humor, can be taken exactly the way I intend or sometimes in ways that I did not anticipate or intend. I realized that their swear words were not personal against the other players and were not said to demean or humiliate. The words were said to express frustration or to be an uncreative adjective. They had been taught that the word stupid makes people feel bad. And, of course, they were right. Now, in my defense, I don’t use stupid very often and I reserve its use for describing things that wouldn’t have happened if even a moderate amount of rational thought had been used. I do not use the word to describe another human being. Those kids had been taught well by the self-esteem curriculum that certain words cut to a person’s very core and can deeply hurt. They were right.
Of course, in my childhood, demeaning language and bullying were not uncommon and when we went to the parents and teachers with our hurts they hid behind the excuse that it is a tough world and you just need to learn how to be not so wimpy and live with things like that. No bully, verbal or physical, ever made me a better person. No time when I resorted to power games did I make the world a stronger and better place. But I was also told make your words short and sweet – you may have to eat them later.
Words matter. I have seen numerous times where the words chosen to be used either escalated a tense situation or calmed things down. I was at Holden Village, a Lutheran Retreat Ministry in the Wenatchee Wilderness of Washington State. The village was an abandoned copper mine and living quarters deep in where the eastern Cascade Mountains feed the Columbia River. When the mine was abandoned in the early 1960s the company left behind millions of cubic yards of poisonous mine tailings. The mine itself had changed hands three times since it had closed and a meeting was being held with the department of the interior, the present mine owners (from Australia), and Holden lovers, to remediate the damage and restore the wilderness. It was a perfect storm of business interests, conservatives, liberals, tree huggers – the potential pitfalls in having an open meeting about this were all over the place.

~ Pastor’s Message continued from Page 2 ~
The director of the village opened the meeting with a devotion and with better eloquence than this basically said, “No one here caused this problem. We are stewards now of what others have left us. We may not want the hard decisions we have to make but they are ours to make. Kicking the can down the round is not being responsible. Blame will solve nothing. Let us covenant to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the awe with which we hold this place and its maker.” It was one of the least adversarial meetings I have ever witnessed. The mine damage is now remediated, the streams and mountains have been cleansed, the village is once again a thriving retreat ministry of the church. Words matter.
I was at a seminar where a psychologist was presenting some findings and he mentioned how the findings contradicted some assertions by some sociologists. He referred to these sociologists by adding a ‘y’ to the end of their names. Rick became Ricky. Bob became Bobby. James became Jimmy. It is a power play because it makes the other person sound like a child. Think of Georgie Patton or Johnny Wayne. We called the psychologist on it. He consulted his notes and realized that he was unconsciously adding the ‘y’ to his opponents’ first names.
I have witnessed the power of I love you…..I appreciate it when you……thank you…..
During Epiphany, the Church Season between Christmas and Lent, we see Jesus out and about demonstrating that things are about to happen that haven’t happened before. I pay attention to his words. Words that turn twelve strangers into disciples. Words that invite foreigner women and blind people and enemy military leaders and religious rivals into the same community.
As much as I am frustrated by certain aspects of the self-esteem curriculum, on this it was spot on – the words we choose to use matter.
As Lent begins, let’s do something counter-cultural at the moment: let’s assume that the people around us deserve to hear good words. Let’s choose our words well.
We welcome ARIA JUNE AL-MOGHRABI
into our Church Family.
Aria is the daughter of
Ali Nicholas and Amber Rose Al-Moghrabi.
She was baptized on January 14, 2018

FLC Youth Committee was contacted by the American Birkebeiner Foundation asking if they would consider daycare for race weekend. The payment would be $50 per child per day on Friday (Kortelopet) and Saturday (Birkie). The Council approved, pending a visit to the Birkie office by Pastor Bacon seeking assurance that all liability is covered. These funds would go a long way in providing funds for the youth trip to Houston in July. The Council thanked Jerry Rasmussen for all his hard work and direction of our Property Committee over the past years. Jerry will remain on the committee and assist Jim Onarheim who is the New Chairman. The Council approved the proceeds of the Lenten Coin folders be donated to the Lutheran Disaster Relief Hurricane Relief. Tiffany will distribute $4.00 coin folders to the children to be used for the same cause. Approval was given to Jette to assess and recommend updating our hardware and software needs in our Office environment. The Council approved a request from the Northwoods Humane Society to use the fellowship hall on an evening in March for the Volunteer Appreciation Recognition and meal.
Will you be my Valentine?
Each year on February 14th, many people
exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with
their special “valentine.” The day of
romance we call Valentine's Day is named
for a Christian martyr and dates back to the
5th
century, but has origins in the Roman
holiday Lupercalia.

Evangelical Minute
This year Valentine’s Day, February 14, marks Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Pastor Bacon remarked, “There should be no problem remembering when this part of our Church year begins.”
The booklet, Christ in Our Home, available in the Narthex, features a message on February 14, written by retired Pastor Sue Gamelin. She referred to Matthew 6:21, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Her message centers on the three disciplines of SHARE, PRAY, and FAST as Lent begins.
SHARE
Drawing upon her experiences, she illustrates how we can find ourselves facing situations calling for action from us. One time, Pastor Gamelin and a driver of the Church van were dropping off children at their homes after a Church activity. At one stop, the father shared how he was very concerned about how he could feed his family that very night. Circumstances for the family had caused the family to reach this point of poverty. Pastor and the driver returned with food for the meal and brought food from the Food Shelf the next morning.
PRAY
Pastor was waiting with a close friend whose husband was undergoing life-threatening surgery. Her friend was “desperately frightened.” Praying, at last, every 15 minutes, the two await word. The outcome was successful; he survived and Pastor reported, so did her friend.
FAST
There was a time that Pastor and others were staying in a Tanzanian village. They began to notice that food served at mealtime was becoming more and more limited. They found that villagers had access to electricity only four hours per week. This trip was a lesson for them how many in this world had to make due with less.
These experiences are not unique, but are the usual way of life for some in this world of ours. Indeed, we have heard over time that America is the “Land of Plenty” and in many, many ways, it is. But, we must be aware that poverty can live next door to plenty. And that this truth should prompt us to SHARE, whenever and wherever we can, remembering it’s not what you are able to SHARE; but that you do so.
PRAY
Prayer is not only a comforting and necessary practice in our faith journey, but God is always ready to hear from us. Prayer connects us to one another as we hear of and experience the highs and lows of our life and those of each other.
Our Holy God, “Share, Pray, Fast. Everyday responses to God’s Grace. We pray that these closing words will guide us as we move through our 2018 Lenten season to be of aid and comfort to others.” In Christ, Amen.

The Mayo Clinic Guide to Stress-Free Living came out in 2013 and it
found some characteristics of people that tended toward being the
most pleasantly functioning in their everyday lives.
Through anecdotal notes and very sound science, the book presented
five characteristics found in the least stressed among us: gratitude, compassion, acceptance, a sense
of higher meaning, and forgiveness. One of the interesting things I found in the book was, duh, the
Church has been saying this for 2000 years.
Another thing is that one of the most meaningful ways that these traits were expressed was in
generosity. And because our heart follows our money, we tend to nurture a better relationship with
the institutions to which we give.
Give to the Humane Society and soon you will be volunteering there. Guaranteed. Give to the
Church and you find yourself seeing it and it’s work in a more positive light.
Sometimes the tail wags the dog, and the truth is
that a wonderful heart does not create a joyful giver;
giving creates a joyful heart.

First Lutheran Church Women February 2018
The snow is falling and we have a winter storm warning. The people in Hayward are thinking Cross-Country skiing and the Birkie race. Many are preparing for this race. Doing endurances to be prepared, and I know the groomers are out keeping the tracks in perfect shape for the big
race, hotels are booked, and many homes are filled also with guests. Paul talks about the race in 1st Corinthians 9: 24 “ do you not know that in a race all the runners (skiers) compete, but only one receives the prize? So run (ski) that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things.” I guess we are in a race too as Paul implies that he runs it as not to be disqualified. We also are racing not to compete per say, but to reach our goal of eternal life. Hebrews 12: 2 “Looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the Joy that was set before Him endured the cross, for us.” Hope we all find Joy in all our races.
The Morning and Afternoon Circles are studying the second session in the Gather Magazine on Multiple meanings: Prepare the Way of the Lord (Luke 3: 3-17). We are discovering the reason the same Bible stories mean different things to different people. We had a great discussion in our last months circle gathering and look forward to this second session too. Grow and learn together as we study God’s Word.

We are able to send two cases (this equals 2,000 gloves), through the generosity of our circle members. We thank you and I know that the Doctors and Nurses will be grateful and many lives will be saved just because of this small contribution from us.

A Message from Your Youth and Education Director
Winter Olympics are starting again this month. In preparation for this, our Terrific Tuesdays group has learned what it takes. Training for the Olympics is very similar to our faith. First we learn God’s word by reading the Bible, taking classes, praying and talking to our parents. Then, we practice what we are taught...and most of the time this is done by trial and error. Trial and error..hmmmmm….this is where we seem to sit most of the time. Don’t we? We try hard to be the best we can be and do our best, but then we wipeout. Sometimes it might be a little scratch, and sometimes it might be a big bruise that takes weeks to heal. Falling is a part of life. It is part of learning and growing. It is what Jesus set forth for us to be able to do without panic.
Lastly, we learned that God is always with us through the Holy Spirit. When we look into ourselves, we can see that God is in our hearts and forever with us. I know it is sometimes hard to remember this. And when we fall hard and that bruise is there for weeks on end, it is easy to “forget” what is inside of us. Remember this: “Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being certain of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1. Jesus made it possible for us to wipeout and still have God with us. It is typically the times of greatest trials that God reveals himself to me the most. Have faith in who you are and what you are doing. Know that God’s plan for you is well planned and following Him will always lead to victory. He will never give you more than you can handle. Faith brings ultimate strength.

FIAT (Faith in Action Team) is once again asking for donations of
paper products and detergent to be collected for the Hayward Food Shelf and the

Last year we exceeded paper product collections from 370 in 2016 to 538 items in 2017! Both the Hayward Food Shelf and the Indianhead Community Action Agency are so grateful for these items. Legally, food shelves cannot spend money it receives on anything but food, so they can greatly use these donations.
This year we will be collecting paper products on the following Sundays:
February 4 February 11 February 18
Please bring your generous contributions of the following items on these Sundays:
Toilet Paper (4 roll packages work the best)
Paper Towels Kleenex Napkins

Hello First Lutheran Family,
February is Rare Diseases month and for our family that means a lot. Ethan, our son, was diagnosed with a rare disease called, Glucose 1 Transporter Deficiency (Glut1). It is considered rare because less than 1,000 children have been diagnosed with the deficiency throughout the world. For Ethan is means daily uncontrollable seizures. They are brief seizures, lasting about 3-10 seconds, but are very frequent with approximately 20 on a good day and over 100 on a bad day. These seizures cause him some cognitive and fine motor delays.
The Glut1 Foundation is a non-profit organization run by a wonderful team of volunteer parents of children living with Glut1. They work extremely hard to learn all they can about Glut1, educate all of the other families with Glut1, support research studies, and are a tremendous shoulder for people, like us, to lean on. To raise awareness of this disease and funds for this wonderful organization and to support their work, our family is honored to invite you to participate in the following opportunities.
Love Some1 with Glut1 Campaign: Every year, the Glut1 Foundation holds an annual “Love Some1 with Glut1” fundraising campaign. Since we started joining this campaign six years ago, we have been so touched by our amazing community of support – our family, friends, church family, and the Hayward community at large. We are forever grateful for your support to this campaign but also for your overall support, kindness, interest, and generosity over the years.
Ethan is kicking off his 2018 campaign with a goal of raising $10,000! Last year, he raised $12,323.00 and we are excited to invite you to join him in reaching this goal. With your support and sharing this opportunity with your friends, we are confident that he will not only reach this financial goal but also play a significant role in raising important awareness about this disease and other rare diseases that touch so many families around the world. The campaign will run from February 14th-28th, 2018.
If you feel inspired to join Ethan, here’s how:
•You can send a check, made out to the Glut1 Foundation, and send to our home address of: The Neumann Family 7476N Pat’s Landing Rd, Hayward, WI 54843.
•You can go online and make a donation directly to Ethan’s page at https://www.flipcause.com/secure/fundraiser/Mjc4Mzk=/13521.
Reminder: all donations to the Glut1 Foundation in honor of Ethan are tax deductible!
Thank you very much…...The Neumann Family

10 Biblical ways to love
1. Listen without interrupting. “To answer before listening — that is folly and shame” (Proverbs 18:13) 2. Speak without accusing. “Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (James 1:19) 3. Give without selfishness. “The righteous give without sparing” (Proverbs 21:26) 4. Pray without ceasing. “We have not stopped praying for you” (Colossians 1:9) 5. Answer without arguing. “Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting with strife” (Proverbs 17:1) 6. Share without pretending. “Speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of … Christ” (Ephesians 4:15) 7. Enjoy without complaining. “Do everything without grumbling or arguing” (Philippians 2:14) 8. Trust without wavering. “[Love] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13:7) 9. Forgive without punishing. “Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:13) 10. Promise without forgetting. “A longing fulfilled is a tree of life” (Proverbs 13:12)

Lectionary Readings for February 2018
February 4, 2018 Fifth Sunday after Epiphany
In Isaiah, it is the one God who sits above the earth and numbers the stars—-it is that God who
strengthens the powerless. So in Jesus’ healing work, we see the hand of the Creator God, lifting up
the sick woman to health and service (diakonia) Like Simon’s mother-in-law, we are lifted up to
health and diakonia. Following Jesus, we strengthen the powerless; like Jesus, we seek to renew our
own strength in quiet times of prayer.
Isaiah 40:21-31 Psalm 147:1-11, 20c 1 Corinthians 9:16-23 Mark 1:29-39
February 11, 2018 Transfiguration of our Lord
The Sundays after Epiphany began with Jesus’ baptism and end with three disciple’s vison of his
transfiguration. In Mark’s of Jesus’ baptism, apparently only Jesus sees the Spirit descending and
hears the words from heaven. But now Jesus’ three closest friends hear the same words naming him
God’s beloved Son. As believers, Paul writes, we are enabled to see the God-light in Jesus’ face,
because the same God who created light in the first place has shone in our hearts to give us that
vision. The light of God’s glory in Jesus has enlightened us through baptism and shines in us also for
others to see.
2 Kings 2:1-12 Psalm 50:1-6 2 Corinthians 4;3-6 Mark 9:2-9
February 18,2018
Today we are celebrating Bold Women’s Day and our Thank-offering service together. This tradition of women’s societies to support the mission of the Church goes back at least to the 1800’s. These women acted boldly to carry out the Church’s mission. They believed that working together they could make a difference. When the Woman of the ELCA was formed over 30 years ago they boldly committed to this tradition of giving in gratitude for blessings received. We are honoring those women who in their day were not invited to take part in their Church’s activities, but they stepped up boldly to make a difference and today we are thanking all women who give of their time and talents to make a difference in Churches every where. We hope all will be inspired to act boldly as you work for our mission here at First Lutheran: “Celebrating the presence of God, Cultivating the spiritual growth of members, Caring for the needs of all people, and communicating Christ to all”.
Luke 21:1-3 Acts 16:13-15 Gospel Luke 8:1-3
February 25, 2018 Second Sunday in Lent
The second covenant in this year’s Lenten readings is one made with Abraham and Sarah: God’s
promise to make them the ancestors of many, with whom God will remain in everlasting covenant.
Paul says this promise comes to all who share Abraham’s faith in the God who brings life into being
where there was no life. We receive this baptismal promise of resurrection life in faith. Sarah and
Abraham receives new names as a sign of the covenant, and we too get new identities in baptism, as
we put on Christ.

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
God's work. Our hands.
We are a Church that is deeply rooted—and always being made new.
We are deeply rooted. The Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America is still
comparatively new as a Church body, and yet
our roots are much deeper than our 25 years
together. The taproot of our life extends
through the histories of predecessor Churches
in the United States, through the formative
witness of the 16th century evangelical
reformers and their confessional writings, to
the Scriptures and the word of Christ. Our life
is in Jesus Christ. We are deeply rooted in his
word of forgiveness and the promises of
God’s steadfast love and mercy. The word of
Christ dwells in us richly. God nourishes us as
one body in Jesus Christ with companions
from around the globe who meet us at
Christ’s table of grace.
We are being made new every day. In Jesus
Christ we are not unchanged. What God does in
Christ is as radical as the death and resurrection
of baptism, where new creatures in Christ rise to
live “no longer for themselves, but for him who
died and was raised for them.” God is bringing
that new creation to life among us in the ministry
of reconciliation. In that service we no longer
see each other as we did before. We are no
longer strangers, competitors or enemies to each
other. We are beloved companions in one body,
restored to a communion where the rich diversity
of our experiences, wisdom and abilities serve the
common good in Christ. The new creation in
Christ rises to life among us every day.
