Life Skills Experience (LSE) Program

In 2013, our LSE program at Chicago Park District (CPD) golf facilities, Foss Park GC (North Chicago), Glenwoodie GC (Glenwood) and Cog Hill (Lemont) flourished in many ways. The number of certifying participants grew 12% from 626 certifying participants in 2012 to 701 in 2013. This year we piloted an incentive program at all our sites where participants earned points for good behavior, exemplifying the nine core values, and practicing and playing golf, which they could then use to “purchase” rewards.

Educational Experiences

PwC Financial Literacy Summit – Fifty LSE participants attended a day long workshops filled

with non-stop interactive activities including PwC’s financial literacy curriculum, golf drills utilizing financial literacy concepts and an afternoon golf scramble played with PwC associates.

John Deere "Careers On Course" Program - Twenty-five LSE participants received an

upfront and intimate look at career paths in golf course management and science, turf grass research and development and environmental education.

Humana Healthy Habits & Leadership Camp - Fifty-two LSE participants attended a full day

camp that consisted of outdoor activities focused on team-building, leadership development and The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits.

The First Tee Greater Chicago Golf Academy - Twenty-four LSE participants had the oppor-

tunity to focus on further developing their golf skills and playing knowledge at the Gongaware Junior Golf Academy, in Franklin, Indiana.

Leadership Opportunities Participants from around the world who have demonstrated exceptional golf and leadership skills are nominated by their chapters for network academies, experiences, and awards. In 2013 a number of our participants were chosen for these special opportunities.

The First Tee National School and DRIVE Program

In addition to having 701 participants in our LSE program, we introduced golf and character education programming to over 18,000, elementary school children, K-5, through The First Tee National School Program and another 620 youth through The DRIVE program at community facilities, such as the Boys & Girls Club and YMCA. In 2014 we aim to increase our attention on growing these programs, as we believe it is the best feeder system to grow participation in our core program, the Life Skills Experience.

NSP Golf & Life Skills Challenge -

Twenty nine (29) elementary school students from Claremont Academy, Dulles School of Excellence, Marquette School of Excellence, and Morton School were scored at nine SNAG stations and were asked to share examples of how they use The First Tee Nine Cores at home and at school.

The First Tee of Greater Chicago staff and P.E. teachers came together through the Chicago Foundation for Education's study group program to promote participation in the NSP program, engage schools currently in the program, give the students something to look forward to while they participate in the program, and mostly importantly get them interested in LSE programs in their area. TFTGC provided for the kids: bus transportation, t-shirts, awards and lunch.

Testimonials and Quotes

“Max and Alex have been participating in The First Tee for several years and love it! They have learned a lot and have become fairly good golfers. Most importantly, they have learned lifelong lessons through First Tee and they will play golf their entire lives!” - Michele Robinson, Parent “I love the play-days and learning about the core-values and how they relate to golf. It amazes me how much you need to use the core values to be successful in golf and school.” -Nicholas Symthe, Par Level Participant “When I opened the email that told me that I had been accepted as one of the 81 participants in the Nature Valley First Tee Open I was ecstatic. Having the opportunity to play a world famous championship course alongside the best junior golfers and senior legends of the game was a dream come true.” – Jason Mathus, Eagle Level Participant

The First Tee of Greater Chicago Development

TFTGC’s ability to continue providing affordable quality golf programs, character education and expanding to reach even more youth, depends 100% on support and donations from caring people who share a love for the game and a passion for helping young people.

Johnson & Johnson Matching Gift—Johnson & Johnson, The First Tee’s Legacy Partner, is

sponsoring a 3 Year Matching Grant Campaign across The First Tee Network. In order to qualify for the $45,000 grant in 2013 TFTCG needed over 750 unique donors and to raise over $639,000.

USGA Player For Life Award—The First Tee of Greater Chicago received the USGA Player

For Life Award in March 1, 2013. The award recognizes and rewards chapters that are achieving significant impact by progressing and retaining participants in the program, providing them a variety of playing opportunities and utilizing different golf courses for their playing and learning experiences. The chapter earned $12,000 because of this award and is extremely grateful to the USGA for its generosity.

PGA TOUR players and friends - Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia teamed up for TFTGC by

pledging to donate $1,000 for every birdie and eagle they made at the BMW Championship- generating over $36,000 in support.

Signature Events

Luke Donald’s 5th Annual Taste of The First Tee— With support from the Encompass

Championship, Prom Catering and North Shore County Club this year’s event was TFTGC’s most financially successful one to date raising over $250,000. PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem was this year’s special guest, and joining him on stage were golf legends Ben Crenshaw, Jay Haas, and Chip Beck.

2nd Annual Golf Classic—The Second Annual Golf Classic hosted by the Ambassadors was

held at Cog Hill’s famous Dubsdread Championship Golf Course. A challenging and spirited day of golf was enjoyed by over 110 golfers and helped raise over $20,000 for our programs.

The Golf Fashion Show and Masters Viewing Party—The first time event was sold out! Over

330 guests cheered on PGA Professionals, TFTGC Ambassadors and The First Tee’rs who walked the Green Carpet Fairway showcasing the golf season’s hottest new apparel and accessories.

A Day at the Dunes Club- A new addition to our signature events this year was A Day at the

Dunes Club. Thanks to the generosity of Mike Keiser and the support of Bill Daniels – this first time event raised nearly $30,000.
