Floyd Horton Safaris in Africa

It was with warm smiles and open arms that we welcomed Floyd Horton to South Africa allthe way from Nixa Missouri We met Floyd and Dolores in 2015 at the Safari Party inBillings MO through Jim Cuist of Totally Awesome Taxidermy We had the privilege ofhunting with Floyd and Dolores in July 2015 and after hunting Cape Buffalo Floyd wasdetermined to hunt lion

Floyd had initially been meant to visit us in March with Floyds dream being to take a liontrophy home However US Fish and Wildlife changed the importation laws and regulationson lion trophies which took effect on 22 January and a plan had to be made to make sureFloyd could take his home with him The trip was therefore moved up to January so thistime while the Safari Party was on at Totally Awesome Taxidermy Floyd was here with ushunting lion

After his arrival Floyd and his professional hunter PD headed South to start the excitinglion hunt

The first morning the hunters tracked a lion but after seeing it realized that it wasnt theright one A bit later on the hunters observed a herd of buffalo grazing dreaming aboutwhich bulls they would pick when suddenly seemingly out of nowhere a male lion camecharging at one of the buffalo The next moment the whole herd turned on the lion andchased it away shy one of the buffalo actually went for the lion What an amazing rare sightto witness After all the excitement they called it a day and relived the experience aroundthe campfire at Boshof in the Free State

The next day the hunters had a fresh set of lion tracks to trail and set out shy this time theycould just tell this lion would be the one After quietly walking on the tracks in the sand forabout an hour they spotted the male and agreed that it was the right one They carefullyproceeded closer and the lion ran off The hunters walked about a mile after it shyunbeknownst to them the lion was hiding in a bush that they walked past twice LuckilyPD spotted it and the hunters walked around the bush to to get an open shot through aclearing The lion growled ferociously Floyd took aim and he hit it with a spectacular shotfrom his Browning 325 WSM rifle

Floyd harvested a number of other trophies including a large sable bull which he shotperfectly and which will be the perfect addition to Floyd and Dolores trophy room Othertrophies include a gargantuan waterbuck a blesbuck a zebra and a steenbuck

We would like to congratulate Floyd on his amazing trophies and thank him for visiting usagain We really look forward to the next hunt

Burgess Burch takes a lion

Burgess is one of our very good friends from Kansas City We have hunted with him in thepast and were very excited to welcome him back

After Burgessrsquo arrival in South Africa the hunters drove a long 65 hours to get to theKalahari close to the Botswana border After sighting in the rifles they drove around andexplored the area spotting buffalo plains game and lion tracks

The hunt started at 630 sharp the next morning kicking off immediately with the hunterslooking for lion tracks After approximately 90 minutes they had seen several tracks but tothe dismay of all involved no fresh ones Eventually they spotted the fresh tracks of a large male lion The hunt was on and afterfollowing the tracks for +shy2 miles they bumped into the lion who ran off They proceeded afurther 4 miles and came across him again lounging beneath a tree The aggressive lionwas growling and snarling ndash ready to charge ndash and did not offer up an easy shot

Burgess moved carefully to get into a better shot position within 35 ndash 40 yards of the lionand pulled the trigger shooting him behind the shoulder The cat got up roared and ranoff but had no chance after the second shot They followed the blood trail for about 100yards and came upon the dead beast ndash he had been shot perfectly behind the shoulder
