APPROACH TO GOD Let us keep silence as we prepare for worship.

MEDITATION “The greatest honor we can give Almighty God is to live gladly because of the knowledge of his love.”

Julian of Norwich

PRELUDE Voluntary, Op. 7, Nr. 8 J. Stanley

Andante staccato (1713 – 1786) Allegro Adagio Fugue

CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Psalm 104:1-2, 4, 24) Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Bless the Lord, O my soul! People: O Lord my God, I stand in awe of Your greatness. Leader: Your being is clothed with honor and majesty and robed in light. People: You stretch out the heavens like a tent, making the winds Your messengers, Leader: And fire and flame Your servants. People: How great are Your works, O God! Leader: In Your wisdom You created the earth and all that is within it. People: In thanksgiving, let us come before the Lord our God.

*HYMN “Are Ye Able,” Said the Master BEACON HILL

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION Leader: Let us approach the throne of grace through the mercies and merits of Christ our Lord. People: Our living God, You are very near to us in our joys and pains. Forgive us when we fail to thank You for all Your gifts. Have mercy on us when we turn our backs on You. Give us faith to see our life’s purpose and grant us courage to live it. Open our hearts to the needs of those who cry out from their misery or suffer in silence, that we may share with them Your healing compassion. Help us receive this gift, too, when we are in need. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A time of silence for personal confession

ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Jesus is our high priest Who alone is holy, blameless, pure, set apart and exalted above the heavens. Because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood and is able to save those who come to God through Him. In His name, I declare that you are forgiven. People: Thanks be to God.

*PRAISE #8/1 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee HYMN TO JOY

(10:00) THE CONGREGATION SINGS:

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love;

Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, Opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the dark of doubt away

Give of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day.

GREETINGS

WITNESSING STEWARD Bill McIntyre

RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS (10:00)

We welcome you with joy as partners in the common life of this church. We promise you our friendship and prayers as we share the hope and labors of the church of Jesus Christ. God grant that together we may continue to grow in God’s knowledge and love, and be witnesses of our risen Lord.

PROCLAMATION OF GOD'S WORD

SCRIPTURE READINGS Isaiah 53: 4-12 Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He

was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the Lord shall prosper. Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Mark 10:35-45 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

GRATIA TIBI Thanks Be to Thee T. Tallis (10:00) CHANCEL CHOIR (1505 – 1585)

ANTHEM Surely, He Hath Borne Our Griefs G. F. Händel (10:00) from “The Messiah” (1685 – 1759)

*HYMN In a Lowly Manger Born MABUNE (10:00)

RESPONSE TO GOD'S WORD CENTERING PRAYER (Unison) God of Majesty, we are surrounded by the abundance of Your gifts and touched by Your grace. Our words of praise do not match the wonders of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit and prepare us for prayer on behalf of Your church and Your world. Amen.

Thanksgiving Baskets and White Dove Programs - As she has done for many years, Carol Butler will lead these very important outreach programs. Covid has caused her to think “outside the box” again for at least one more year. She will not hold sign-ups following church services. Anyone who is interested in participating in the Thanksgiving Basket program or the White Dove/Silver Dove program, or both, can contact Carol. Her contact information is in the church directory or you may call the church office. This will give her an idea as to how many families the program can take on. We will be doing gift cards for both programs as we did last year. As time goes on, those taking part will receive further information and deadline dates.

Friday Night at the Movies - October 29 - 7:00 PM: Our latest movie night tells the story of a youngster who may, or may not, be the reincarnation of a teacher. While his American parents try to deal with this possibility, which is explained to them by visiting monks from Tibet, the movie intercuts its modern story with a retelling of the life of Prince Siddhartha, who grew up to become the Buddha. Come join Rev. Jami on Friday October 29 for our first-in-a-year Movie Night. There will be plenty of popcorn and drinks and you are most welcome to bring a dessert to share. Please bring your mask and your curiosity about the religion of Buddhism. It’s sure to be a fun, educational, and entertaining evening. See you there!

Aspects of Christianity - In an effort to further feed the Spirit that is within each of us, First Church is making available small brochures that one may take home and keep. Each mini-brochure is based on one particular area of Christian concern, and consists of scripture and other helpful quotes on that topic. There are 34 different topics that are presented in this way. You will find these brochures displayed a few at a time on the windowsill opposite the Welcome Center. Please feel free to take one of the brochures, and an information sheet about the project. Each brochure has a black and white drawing that you may color if you like.

Prayer Shawls – Please see the display of handmade prayer shawls near the Welcome Center. Crafted by the loving hands and hearts of parishioners, this ministry strives to bring comfort and healing to those in need and to those celebrating. Upon completion of each shawl, a final blessing is said before being sent to the individual. Prayer shawls bless recipients by knowing they are wrapped in loving prayers of healing and celebration from their fellow parishioners. This vital ministry is looking for more knitters. For more information about the Prayer Shawl Ministry, speak with Karen Bianchi, Kay Potfora, or Rev. Jami.

INFORMATION First Church was gathered on December 16, 1685 as The Church of Christ in Dunstable. On the same day

Thomas Weld was ordained and settled as minister of the church. The current building, built in 1894, is the

tenth building to house the First Church community. In 1961, the church entered fellowship with the United

Church of Christ. We welcome into our membership any who will own the covenant of First Church and

seek to continue the ministry of Jesus Christ in the community and world. Those interested in joining the

church should contact the church office for information. New members are received during worship in

November, February and May. The Sacrament of Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month

and the Sacrament of Baptism on the last. First Church is supported almost entirely by pledges. Every

member is expected to make a financial pledge according to their ability.

PASTORAL CARE Pastoral Care is available to all in need. Please keep the ministers informed of occasions of sickness, sorrow,

and joy. Let the church office know if you or family member or friend is hospitalized.

COMMUNICATIONS
