TheTheThe First WordFirst WordFirst WordWe are Partners In Ministry ...
Albany Lutheran Cluster churches have been meeting foryears. Recently we have looked more at statistics and trendsfrom the congregations. We learned a great deal about oursimilar situations. We have differences and deal with challengesin differing ways. God continues to lead us as Lutherans servingGod stronger together. I like the line we have been using for thecluster, “Partners in Ministry & Making a Difference.”
At the invitation of First Lutheran, leaders from First Lutheran Church and St. John’sEvangelical Lutheran Church met to consider where God may be leading Lutherans inAlbany. Both congregations have opportunities and challenges in 2012 and looking intothe next decade. Transitions are a part of that picture. We pray First Lutheran will bewelcoming a new pastor soon and in coming years (not too soon) I will likely retire fromSt. John’s. The money assets of both churches are in decline. Congregations have ebbsand flows.
Our congregations are forward looking yet celebrate the history and legacy from ourforebears in the faith. God has called us to serve and minister in Albany and the greaterCapital Region. We have members spread throughout the wider community and focusmuch of our service in Albany. The ministries these congregations share is amazing.
God is always changing us. The word repentance means change. God calls us tochange direction in life. Congregations also change. Our challenge is to perceive theSpirit of God’s lead for our congregations’ future. Change will come for members andstaff whether we act on that change or not. I think peoples’ input is better than justletting things happen.
The leaders from the two churches present a proposal for the congregations toconsider. You will find it in this newsletter. We wanted to allow time for discussion andpondering in the heart (Luke 2:19). The Statement of Intent is to seek congregationalsupport for a formal dialogue between First and St. John’s about how we best carry outGod’s mission. We are close neighbors (½ mile) who grow ever closer in cooperation. The leaders look to hosting congregational meetings in September, and we want tofoster conversations and activities during the summer. To God be the Glory.

STATEMENT OF INTENT
At a meeting of the officers and a representative of First LutheranChurch, 646 State Street, Albany, New York 12203 and the ExecutiveCommittee of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 160 Central Avenue,Albany, New York 12206 duly called and held on May 30, 2012, the followingStatement of Intent was recommended for adoption, after approval by eachCongregational Council, by congregational meetings of First Lutheran Churchand St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church:
WHEREAS, First Lutheran Church and St. John’s Evangelical LutheranChurch are Lutheran Congregations under the auspices of theUpstate New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church inAmerica (hereinafter sometimes referred to as “Congregations”)serving in the City of Albany, New York, and
WHEREAS, both Congregations are facing social and demographicchanges affecting many urban churches including loss of membershipas a result of population shifts from the City to the Suburbs, and
WHEREAS, both Congregations acknowledge that it may be prudentto align the physical, financial and personnel resources in an effort tocontrol costs to insure that the mission and ministry of eachCongregation is carried on now and in the future, and
WHEREAS, the proximity of the churches being located only a fewblocks from each other suggests that some type of collaborativesharing of facilities and leadership would be beneficial to bothCongregations; and
WHEREAS, both Congregations desire to explore a long-term solutionto provide the most prudent use of the resources that have beenentrusted to them, together with a clear statement of our continuedcommitment to meet the spiritual and human needs of our membersand the residents of the City of Albany,
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that First Lutheran Church andSt. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church begin a formal dialoguepertaining to future shared mission and ministry. Ongoingdiscussions will be designed to open the lines of communicationbetween members of the two congregations. Discussions forblending ministry should include the review of all aspects ofleadership, resources and worship sites. A record of all discussionswill be maintained which will be available to church members at alltimes upon request and shared with the congregations on a regularbasis.
Here’s the scoop…
Now that temperatures are averagingabove 70° on a daily basis (and evenhigher on some days) we can safelysay that summer has officially begun. And that means an earlier worshiptime during July and August. We willmeet at 9:00 a.m. each Sunday(starting July 1) for worship with HolyCommunion and followed, of course,by our Coffee and Fellowship hour inthe now air-conditioned HartwickLounge. Yes that’s right, there arenow two A/C units in the loungeoffering a cool and comfortable spaceto visit after worship. Please stop inone of these Sundays and check it out.
So … since we didn’t publish a Junenewsletter, let me try to catch you upon everything that happened duringthat time …
The Congregational Life Team hosteda wonderful Memorial Day potlucklunch that featured all kinds of “All-American” dishes and desserts. Therewere samples of many of our favoritecomfort foods and lots of chocolategoodies too. The décor for the daywas red, white and blue and everyoneenjoyed the fellowship in celebratingand remembering those who haveserved our country.
Sunday School ended their regularclasses the week before MemorialDay, but they continued working withDottie Johnson (dir. of music andorganist) every week on their anthemfor Sunday School Sunday, June 17th.Many thanks to Cindy Reynders, JulieLind and Marcelle Olsen for their timeand talent working with the childrenon a weekly basis.
Speaking of June 17th, it was quite abusy day at FLC. The children in ourSunday School program were activeparticipants in the worship servicethat day. Amelia Erling-Colafati wasthe acolyte (along with Rich Reynders)and one of the lectors. Ingrid Erling-Colafati and Abby Brousseau werecommunion assistants and lectors.
Page 3
Abby Brousseau and Sydney Mack were both ushers with their dads ShawnBrousseau and Brian Mack. We were so impressed with the clarity and volume ofour young readers. It certainly was a joy seeing them participating with suchconfidence.
After the service, we held our Congregational Meeting to review the AnnualBrochure of Reports for 2011 and elect Council members. We thanked JoeMarkowski (Stewardship) and Laurel Riker (Evangelism) for their service on ChurchCouncil and elected for a second three-year term Barbara Shafarzek(Congregational Life) and Victor Rauscher (Finance). All portions of the Reportwere accepted unanimously and following a motion to adjourn the meeting, wemoved into Wittenberg Hall for the Luau Picnic lunch.
Heading into July there aren’t many things set on the calendar, but be on thelookout for more information on upcoming events that may be coming down theroad. This cat will be away on vacation for a little bit, but will be back in the officeon July 10th. If you are in need of pastoral care during that time, make sure to get ahold of Steve Carlson (275-2229) and leave him a message. If he is in the office, hewill answer the phone, but please try to reach him on his cell phone.
This year, we will have an August issue of The FirstWord, so don’t fret, there is more scoop to be had!Take good care and see you again next month!

Treasurer’s ReportAnnual Report Update for 2011 and Current Trend
For 2011, Non-dedicated fund revenues exceeded spending by $24,750.This “surplus” has improved our cash flow and allowed us to pay bills on amore timely basis, allowed us to advance unbudgeted repairs of the organpipes and catalogue and improve the storage of over 690 pieces of choirmusic and finally created a cushion to accommodate the potential costs of ainstalling a newly called Pastor.
Last year, Dedicated Fund income trailed expenses by $8,155. The bulk ofthis difference can be attributed to $10,000 payment to establish theRittberger scholarship at the Philadelphia Theological Seminary.
In the area of Invested Assets, which include funds on deposit with ourbroker Morgan Stanley/ Smith Barney and ELCA’s Mission Investment Fund, withdrawals of $86,553 reflect the final payments for the historical windowrenovations, lump sum payouts to Pastor Victorson and the use of $48,000for ongoing operations. Income included an approximately 2.2% percentfrom interest and dividends and a 3.3% gain in asset value.
Although not included in the Annual Report, through the first five months of2012, income and spending for 2012 are on target and consistent withbudgeted amounts. In fact it is highly encouraging that Congregationalgiving has remained steady during our transition and I believe reflects thestrong dedication that we as a Congregation have towards the ministry andwork of First Lutheran.

Dear People of God at First Lutheran!
I thank God for every remembrance of you – yourprayers, sacraments, laying on of hands for healing andspecial visits sustained me since January 20th.
I have experienced some of the deepest moments ofdisappointment, discouragement and depression duringthese recent days – days like no other to date.
All I can say is that I couldn’t sustain life without yourprayers, good wishes, energies and vibes. For all you’vegiven, I am so very thankful!
Blessings,Jim Garrison
P.S. I’ve been in bed or a wheelchair – yet soon to graduate to

Mother’s Day GiftMother’s Day means more than just flowers and gifts. It’s
a day to give thanks, not only for our own loving mother, butfor the role of mothers in our society.
St. Paul’s Center offers homeless mothers and theirchildren a safe place to live. They arrive at their door oftenfrustrated, frightened, tired and confused. These mothers arein need of both physical shelter, as well as emotional andsocial support. St. Paul’s offers them a safe place where theyare protected and supported.
In honor of Mother’s Day a $100 donation was sent to St.Paul’s Center. With this gift they are able to support mothersin their journey to provide a more secure life for themselvesand their children.
