Easter Sunday April 12, 2020

We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him.HAPPY EASTER! What we celebrate today as a parish family and within our own families

seems so disconnected from the reality we have been living for the last month. This is the fourth Sunday in which we celebrate mass remotely, receiving the graces of spiritual communion but not the physical encounter with the Lord that we long for. And now it is Easter, the Sunday of all Sundays, and we continue to worship in simple and distance ways, the awesomely profound truth that death had no power over Jesus. So we too live in hope that death may have no power over we who profess our faith in the resurrection. No matter what we are experiencing now, and in the weeks to come, we through faith, celebrate that new life is always possible. These months of fear, sadness, anxiety and death have been unimaginable because it has been so intense and so universal. Yet none of it is foreign to us. Throughout this past year each of us has had many “death” experiences. The loss of a job, the breakup of a marriage, devastating illness, addiction relapses and of course the sorrow that comes with the physical death of a loved one. Saint Paul proclaims for us today, that ultimately death has no power over us. Yet during this intense time and throughout the course of life, we cannot deny the power of death. One of the ways in which we typically try to face these death experiences is by adopting a notion that says we must “move on.” While it is true that life continues, and we seek a return to normalcy and routine, what we celebrate today is more than “moving on.” We hope not to move on but, by the grace of God, we hope to live a resurrected life. The resurrection is not a resuscitation of our old self, but a new self that does not forget death. The new self remembers the sorrow of death and knows the truth that in the end the death was transformative but not the ultimate power. The resurrected body of Jesus still has scars, the wounds are always there, but the unbelievable has happened to those fatal wounds. They are healed and the resurrected body, eats, speaks, moves and lives. We celebrate today that this new life is possible for us too. We celebrate that there is a gift of eternal life awaiting us. And we celebrate that potential for resurrection from the sorrows that we experience. We rejoice because He is risen and so then can we arise with him.THANK YOU – Normally in my Easter column I take the time to thank all who helped us to celebrate our Holy Week liturgies. So I will start there. I thank all who have helped the priests and I share these Holy Days with you via the Internet. The presence of Ron, Andrea, Kate and Linda allowed us to make our worship as special as possible in these unique times. I also thank our seminarian, Chris Heller, Sister Carol and Deacon Dave for presiding at morning prayer during the Triduum and Cathy Weiss, Sister Beth and Deacon Dave's wife Mary for assisting them. Very importantly, I thank our Youth Minister Steve Benner for his video graphic and editing skills, which provided us with an opportunity to be united through technology. But as we now pass the one month mark of this experience of separation, I would like to give special acknowledgment to the staff of our parish and school who have blessed us with

dedicated service allowing us to continue our mission. I thank Tim, Izzy and Franco for working so hard to clean the buildings, keep them clean and using the time to catch up on some other maintenance projects. I thank our teachers, teaching assistants, our Principal Mrs. Doherty and her assistants for continuing to educate our students as well as uniting them and their families. I thank Cathy Weiss and Joan Berk for doing the same with our Religious Education families, sharing faith and religious formation in a distant and creative way. Sister Carol has not remotely worked but has been here in the O'Dea Center with ongoing service to the clients of our food pantry and a preparedness for the new needs that have arisen. Our Youth Minister, Steve Benner has not only assisted us with the technology that has allowed us to be connected to all of you but has used that technology to work with our adolescents and teens, providing them opportunities to virtually be together as well as leading them in creative efforts that have helped all of us pray during the time. Tara and Rose, our support staff in our office, has assisted us by working remotely, responding to phone calls and emails in a timely manner. And I cannot thank enough our bookkeeper and accountant, Nancy Brown, for all that she has done. She has come in once a week to prepare our bank deposits, pay our bills and process payroll by herself, allowing the business of the parish to go on.I thank Father Daniel, Father Liam, Father Mike and our seminarian Chris. In many ways this time of isolation and quasi-quarantine has been a blessing for us in that it has given us time together that we would not necessarily have had. We have come to know each other better, we have prayed more frequently together and together they have been a great support to me.Lastly, I thank all of you again for the kindness and care you have been showing to us. In addition, your continued support of our food pantry and your financial support of the parish is remarkable. I am so grateful that so many have embraced the responsibility that each of us has in sustaining the mission of the parish. How grateful I was to tell our employees that we are able to once again pay their salaries into the next pay period. Like our steadfastness in maintaining all of the practices that have allowed us to flatten the curve of virus afflictions, I ask that you continue to financially support our parish during this time. Weekly envelopes and your Easter Gift to the parish can be mailed in or dropped off at the office as well as through our secure on line platform, Parish Giving (enroll at www.tinyurl.com/give2hfam)PRAYERS AND SUPPORT - I ask you to continue to pray for the sick and to let us know of those who are afflicted, so we may remember them in prayer. I also ask you to sincerely pray for those who have shouldered much of the sorrow and anxieties of these days, our health care and emergency personnel. We have arrived at Easter and new life is upon us. Let us continue to pray for and with each other. May God Bless You and Your Families, for he has risen. Peace,

Easter Sunday April 12, 2020

...from Bishop Barres...from Bishop BarresDear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

None of us could have imagined even weeks ago, that we would celebrate Holy Week and Easter

Sunday virtually. I have been amazed and inspired by the creativity and initiative of our pastors, our

people and our parishes to continue evangelizing all of Long Island.

Whether it is video-streaming Masses and Eucharistic adoration, conducting a virtual parish mission,

or a health precaution sensitive Eucharistic procession through neighborhoods, you are all moving

forward and trusting in the transformative power of the Risen Christ as we continue to experience

the tragedies, trauma, unemployment, financial and economic distress of the COVID19 crisis. The

light that streams from the glorified wounds of the Risen Jesus always touches and transforms our wounds and fears, and the

wounds and fears of the world. We remember in a special way this Easter Sunday and throughout the Easter season the souls

of those who have died from the corona virus and their families, and those who, as Pope Francis says, are “writing the decisive

events of our time: doctors, nurses, supermarket employees, cleaners, caregivers, providers of transport, law and order forces,

volunteers, priests, deacons, religious men and women and so very many others.” We remember our families and the efforts of

each of us to care for our families and our neighbors. While we are all in pain that our Holy Week 2020 needs to be a virtual one,

we do have a Pastoral Letter, The Great Week: A Pilgrimage with the Lord in Holy Week which can help strengthen, lift and

inspire our virtual Holy Week celebrations. This Pastoral Letter is a user-friendly, easily understandable synthesis of Holy Week

and the Sacred Triduum, its liturgical theology, spirituality and history, designed to show the relationship between the Sacred

Liturgies of Holy Week and Catholic Evangelization. I encourage everyone to participate in all the Holy Week liturgies virtually

through the Catholic Faith Network (see: catholicfaithnetwork.org for details) and through your own parishes streaming the

liturgies. Let’s take this unique and virtual evangelization opportunity to pray that the Risen Christ might lead a massive return

of Catholic Long Islanders to a full, active and conscious participation in our Holy Week liturgies and our Sunday Masses

throughout the year. I encourage you all to read and pray our Pastoral Letter which is available on our diocesan website DRVC.

org and in the March 2020 Long Island Catholic magazine that many of you received at home. I also had the opportunity on

March 27, 2020, to share the Pastoral Letter with every American Bishop in the United States for possible use in their dioceses

as they celebrate virtual Holy Weeks around the country. I received an email from the Bishop of Fairbanks, Alaska. He thanked

the Diocese of Rockville Centre for sharing the Holy Week Pastoral Letter with the people of Fairbanks, Alaska and said: “We

have 37 remote parishes of Native Alaskans, pretty much on ‘lock down’ that could benefit enormously from the Pastoral

Letter.” Catholic Long Islanders stand in the solidarity of the Risen Lord with Catholic Alaskans! This is just another example

of the global Catholic solidarity that our Holy Father Pope Francis models for us and calls us to. Thank you for continuing to

support your parish and the vital ministries of our Church as your means allow during this most challenging time for all of us.

The Church continues to serve the spiritual and physical needs of people during this crisis. Weekly collections mailed or given

online will be critical to the sustaining and reemergence of our parishes. Our Easter joy may be delayed this year, but our faith,

hope and trust in the power of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection must shine brighter than ever. The cross of this crisis offers

us the opportunity for a renewed and lasting appreciation for the gift of family and the transformative power of faith. Know

that you and all your families are in my heart and in my prayers as we celebrate The Great Week, Easter Sunday, the Easter

Octave, Divine Mercy Sunday and the Easter Season.

He is Risen! Alleluia!

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend John O. BarresBishop of Rockville Centre

Sincerely in Christ,

This Week in Religious Education … After these Lenten weeks of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we are finally able to restore the Alleluia to our prayers!

At the beginning of Lent, we placed our Alleluia in our Lenten box as we prayed:

Lord of joyful noise, God of solemn silence, today we bury this word of praise so that we can turn our thoughts to the sadness of sin in this world and the suffering that it causes. You are a loving Father to us, a forgiving Savior, a guiding Spirit, always ready to turn our steps toward goodness and peace. Give us a good and holy Lent. In forty days when Lent is finished bring us back to this place to claim our right to Easter joy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Today, we joyfully join our voices in praise as we pray:

CHRIST IS RISEN! ALLELUIA! LET US GO FORWARD SINGING OUR EASTER PRAISES AND MAKING A

JOYFUL NOISE UNTO THE LORD! God of new life, today we sing our Easter song of joy and give thanks for

your gifts of new life. Hear our prayers, and fill our hearts with thanksgiving, joy, and praise. We ask this throughour Risen Lord, Jesus Christ.Amen.

Have You Lost a Loved One to Addiction? – A Bereavement Support Group specifically for adults who have lost a loved one to addiction meets on the 2nd Monday of each month from 7-8PM at the YES Community Counseling Center, 152 Center Lane in Levittown. It is free. Call Corinne at 799-3203 to register.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES - REGINA MATERNITY SERVICES AND PREGNANCY SUPPORT Our Community Program provides case management services and assistance to pregnant and parenting young women. Help is available in accessing medical and mental health services, educational training, and needed supplies, when available. Group counseling is offered on topics such as parenting skills, child development, nutrition, independent living skills, anger management, and more. CALL 516-233-7888 for more information. Serving Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Calling All Caregivers – For the past six years Holy Family Parish has been sponsoring a monthly support group for those spouses and children who are caring for a family member. Some of those being cared for are either experiencing a decline in mental ability &/or some physical limitations. What is common is all these situations is that often those caring for their loved family members are on duty 24/7. If you are a caregiver, please consider taking 90 minutes a month to give yourself a respite from caregiving. If you know of someone who is caring for another and could benefit from attending a support group please encourage him/her to consider joining other caregivers for conversation and support. The support group will meet at 1:00pm every 4th Tuesday of the month. Contact Sister Carol for any questions/concerns at 516-225-1226 or [email protected].

Everyone counts/Census 2020 - The census is still ongoing and the census response website is now live. With the current situation due to Covid 19, it is more important than ever that people self-report online or by phone. You can fill out the census for your household at www.2020census.gov even if you have not received your invitation and census ID number. Just enter your address to begin. You can also respond by phone at 844-330-2020.

The LI State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University is sponsoring a FREE BENEFITS & RESOURCES EVENT on Saturday, April 25 from 9am to 1pm. Please see the bulletin board over the food collection bin in the gathering space for the specific free health screenings and resources/information available at the event. This is open to Veterans & Non-Veterans.

Become a Parish Friendly Visitor & Bring Joy to a Homebound ParishionerWe ask you to consider becoming a "Friendly Visitor" a part of our Social Ministry Program. Many of our

parishioners due to age or limited mobility are unable to go out ad socialize and would welcome a weekly visit.

The purpose of the visit is just that - to visit!! You might sit and talk, play cards to board games, or even read aloud to someone with impaired eyesight. The length of the visit is 45 minutes to an hour. The friendly visitor is not permitted to prepare meals, do housekeeping, provide transportation, go on errands, give medication,

assist in ambulation, or take out on a walk. If you feel that you would like to be a "Friendly Visitor", please contact Sister Carol at 938-3846 x331.
