February 4, 2018 Dear Friends,

As pastor of St. Joseph, my primary responsibility is to help you and all of us grow closer to Christ. As an integral part of that mission, I hope you grow as a disciple of Jesus, and that you go and make disciples of others. I am excited that our parish is participating in a survey conducted by Catholic Leadership Institute. The Disciple Maker Index (DMI) Survey allows parishioners to reflect on their own spiritual growth and discipleship and identify the ways in which the parish effectively supports that growth.

The web-based survey will be accessible online and in paper form from February 5 through March 5. Please take part, and encourage other parishioners to take part as well. We want as high a response rate as possible.

At the completion of the survey, our parish will receive an aggregate report of the results. We will NOT have access to individual survey responses. This survey offers us a unique and important opportunity to learn about issues of importance to our families. We will use these results to look at opportunities to support parishioner growth in discipleship and also to create goals and action plans to achieve that growth.

Please take 10-15 minutes to complete the survey. The results will be invaluable to me, the staff, and our many volunteers as we seek ways to best support everyone in their discipleship journey.

It is vital for us a parish to continue growing and not to just keep doing the same old programs and events. This survey hopefully will throw a light on what you see we as a parish family are doing well and where we might need to grow and do things differently. We are all called to MISSION, not maintenance.

For more information, please see the insert in today’s bulletin.

Thank you in advance being part of this survey.

Saint Joseph, Pray for Us!

Sacrament News Congratulations to all of our parish children who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on January 31 and February 1! The smiles on their faces as they returned to their pews gave a great witness as to how much joy and peace can be found in this wonderful Sacrament of Healing.

Summer PREP Pilot Program Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to those who volunteered to teach or assist in another way with the summer religious education program we were hoping to pilot from July 30-

August 10, 2018. At this time, however, we do not have enough volunteers to be able to offer Summer PREP this year, either as two weeks of half days or one week of full days. We were looking forward to offering this additional way of bringing our Catholic faith alive for the parish children and helping them to grow in their relationship with Jesus. We will revisit it in the future.

Deepening Prayer Prayer invites us to become aware of the living interaction between the God who will always remain beyond all we can think or imagine and the God who abides deep in our own hearts. As we become more aware of these sacred encounters, we enter into a personal and intimate relationship with the Author of our being. We become a place where God’s dream is becoming alive in our personal life. How might we deepen this call, this desire in our own hearts, for a personal relationship with the One who is closer to us than we are to ourselves and whose dream of us is coming to birth every day in our lives? Pam Seymour, a spiritual director trained in the Ignatian tradition, will lead us in ways of deepening 3 kinds prayer: verbal/vocal, meditation and contemplation, using scripture, breathing, music, art and poetry.

Sessions will be held on Thursdays, February 15, March 1, 8 and 15 from 7-8:30 in the St. John Neumann Room in the church.

For more info or to register, contact Pam at [email protected] or 484-678-1653.

40 Days for Life February 14th is Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent and also the start of the Spring campaign for 40 Days for Life (40 DFL). 40 DFL is a time of prayer, fasting and standing vigil at abortion clinics throughout the United States and other countries to bring awareness of the killing the babies in the womb. The Planned Parenthood Clinic in West Chester performs abortions at its Wayne & Market Streets location every Friday. The Spring campaign will end on Palm Sunday, March 25. St. Joseph Parish has participated in 40 DFL since it became a national event in 2007. It is very important that we show our resolve to end abortion and you can do this by participating in the Spring Campaign. Watch the bulletin each week to see the date of St. Joseph Parish’s day. In today’s Gospel, we hear of a great number of suffering people who seek the healing touch of Jesus. He could not respond to them all. But the Gospel also reveals Jesus, after praying in solitude, sensing an urgency to proclaim the Good News of His Father’s redemptive love to those who suffer in the nearby villages and towns. Stewards are called to follow in Jesus’ footsteps, to respond to those who suffer with compassion. How are we responding to the suffering in our world? How are we using our gifts to continue the work of Christ’s redemptive healing?

Feed the Hungry: Lend a hand to help Safe Harbor

On the first Friday of every month, St. Joseph parishioners prepare, deliver, and serve dinner to 25 women residents at Safe Harbor in West Chester. Would you like to be part of this fulfilling – and needed – outreach? We need volunteers to: • Prepare one of the components of the meal – a main

dish, a vegetable, a starch, a salad, and a dessert. • Be part of the team that delivers and serves the meal. We arrive at Safe Harbor at 4 p.m., serve between 4:30 and 5 p.m., then go home. If you are interested in volunteering on a rotating schedule or if you would like to learn more, please contact parishioner Elizabeth Sokol at [email protected]. Our next meal day is Friday,

The Loaves and Fishes

Project

With the Loaves and Fishes Project, giving is as easy as 1-2-3:

• Grab a can of soup, a box of pasta, or any non-

perishable item from your cupboard as you dash out the door to Mass.

• Drop off your donation in the “Loaves and Fishes” closet on your right as you come into church.

• Enter the church with the warm feeling of a nourished soul!

The Loaves and Fishes team delivers the items to the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown. Feel free to contribute to this “ongoing food drive” once a week, once a month, once a year - anytime. As a church family, we can make a much appreciated contribution and a significant impact to a charity that helps over 700 families every week.
