Why would God command his people to come to Jerusalem 3 times a year? He wanted his people to see when his son the messiah was born, when his son the messiah would die, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.For Tabernacles Josephus recorded that 2 & ½ million Jews would have been in Jerusalem for Tabernacles which is our Lords Birthday Party

Jesus was Born of the Feast of Tabernacles

Joh 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Dwelt- skenoo skay-no'-oFrom G4636; to tent or encamp, that is, (figuratively) to occupy (as a mansion) or (specifically) to reside (as God did in the Tabernacle of old, a symbol fo protection and communion): - dwell.

Lev 23:36 Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be a holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a solemn assembly; and ye shall do no servile work therein. Lev 23:39 Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath. Lev 23:42 Ye shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are Israelites born shall dwell in booths: Lev 23:43 That your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

The Booths spoke of a temporary dwelling place, enroute to the promised land, and permanent dwelling

Tents also speak of our earthly lives

Heb 11:9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

The Feast of TabernaclesWaving the lulav (lulavim is the plural), is a tradition based again on Leviticus 23:40 . . . NKJ Leviticus 23:40 'And you shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruit of beautiful trees, branches of palm trees, the boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God for seven days.

Waving the LulavimWithin this passage is the specific command to take four specific types of plants and use them in your rejoicing during the festival.  Though the prophet Ezra appears to understand the commandment as a mandate to use the plants as building materials (Nehemiah 8:15). the Jewish sages understood that a person was supposed to actually take these four species in their hands and worship with them.According to Jewish sources, three of the four species - the palm branch, willow branch, and the myrtle - were held in the right hand while the fourth species, the etrog (a lemon-like fruit) was held in the left hand while circling around the altar. 

They are waved in the synagogue, or the temple, in every direction; north, south, east, west and up and down. This represents the redemption of Israel, and the Kingdom soon to come. The Jewish custom says these four species of trees represent four kinds of people: red, yellow, black and white and the four letters of the name of God. YHVH

The Feast of IngatheringMat 13:38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; Mat 13:39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. Mat 13:40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. Rev 14:19 The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God's wrath.

The Feast of TabernaclesThe Jews have a custom on this Feast called the water and wine pouring

Each day (except for the first day) of the festival, a group of priests would set out to gather large willows from the valley of matzos. They would line up horizontally and would begin a return procession back to the temple. They would swish the willow branch back and forth as they proceeded toward the temple, thus making a "swooshing" sound, the sound of the wind or the ruach, Holy Spirit.

While this was going on, another group of priests would proceed to the Pool of Siloam (Messiah) from which the High Priest would gather a flask full of "living water“ in a golden pitcher. The assistant would have a silver pitcher with wine. Leading the procession of priests to the pool of siloam was a single flute player, who was called the pierced one.

Both groups would then return to the Temple, and while the group with the willows would circle the altar waving their willows, the High Priest with his flask of water and his assistant with a flask of wine would both empty their pitchers on the southwest corner of the altar, thus picturing the coming of the Holy Spirit as living water. (water and wine were mixed)

Joh 19:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. The priests would then make a sukkah over the top of the altar and recite Psalm 118.

' But wisdom is proved right by her actions."

Also during this festival the people were praying for rain. The former rain is in the spring and in Israel it is a heavy dew that comes up out of the earth. It is associated with teaching the word of God, and with the resurrection.Deu 32:2 My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distill as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:

The Feast of TabernaclesThe former rain and the latter rain is associated with the first and second coming of messiah, according to Hebrew tradition. The first time Jesus came he came as the dew teaching the word of God. The latter rain comes in the fall right after Tabernacles and portrays the second coming of messiah. When Jesus the pierced one ascended into heaven he asked the father he prayed for rain. Jesus said…..

Joh 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

Zec 14:8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. Zec 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

This feast is associated with rain. Jesus said he was the one that had living water. The pierced one who led the procession. In the future on Yom Kippur , He will come back with the saints and a fountain will be opened and living water will flow from Jerusalem and the feast of Tabernacles will be celebrated.

Joh 8:3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, Joh 8:4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Joh 8:5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

Joh 8:6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. Joh 8:7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. Joh 8:8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

What did Jesus write on the ground? Jeremiah gives us a clue.Jer 2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

What is the picture here?Israel is the adulterous woman; she has found other Gods. She has forsaken the living water. Remember where he is at and the water and wine tradition.

Joh 8:9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

Joh 8:10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? Joh 8:11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

Pro 7:11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: Pro 7:12 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.) Pro 7:13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, Pro 7:14 I have peace offerings with me; this day have I paid my vows.

Pro 7:15 Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. Pro 7:16 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. Pro 7:17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. The Feast of Tabernacles is called the Festival of the full moon!

Mar 13:34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Mar 13:35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Mar 13:36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. Mar 13:37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

Luk 18:8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

The Feast of TabernaclesWhat else happened on this Feast day?

Shortly after the end of the first day of Sukkot, the priests would light four huge lamps in the Court of the Women, each with four huge bowls on each. Each bowl held 7 – 8 gallons of oil and had wicks made from "swaddling clothes", the worn out undergarments of the priests. When the lamps were all lit, it was said that they lit up the entire city of Jerusalem. All the men would then begin dancing and singing in a great celebration. This rejoicing would last late into the night.

During the Feast of Tabernacles the Priests would use Strips of old priestly garments for wicks to light the lamp stands. Jesus’s relatives were priests. (Zachrias & Elizabeth) Jesus was literally wrapped in strips of priestly garments of the feasts of Tabernacles

Remember This festival was also called the festival of lights and the Feast of nationsJoh 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Lets see what Jesus does next on this feast

Joh 9:1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. Joh 9:2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind Joh 9:3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. Joh 9:4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. Joh 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

Joh 9:6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, Joh 9:7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. Joh 9:8 The neighbors therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

Jesus sent the blind man with the clay on his eyes down to the very pool where the priests were leading the procession with the golden pitcher to get the living water from the pool of Siloam to take it back to pour it on the Altar. Jesus had his own way of Celebrating this Festival. He said he was the light of the world and he healed the blind man. He said he was the fountain of living water and he forgave the adulterous woman. He was the pierced one with the water, the wine , the wind and the light. He is our Joy and he wants us to celebrate him. The message at his birth from the angels is still the same today.Luk 2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. This is the festival to the whole world!

Joh 9:9 Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. Joh 9:10 Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? Joh 9:11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight. Joh 9:12 Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not. Joh 9:13 They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

Joh 9:14 And it was the Sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. Joh 9:15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. Joh 9:16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. Joh 9:17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.

Joh 9:18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. Joh 9:19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? Joh 9:20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: Joh 9:21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.

Joh 9:22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. Joh 9:23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him. Joh 9:24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. Joh 9:25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. Joh 9:26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?

Joh 9:27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? Joh 9:28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples. Joh 9:29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. Joh 9:30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvelous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. Joh 9:31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshiper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

Joh 9:32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. Joh 9:33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. Joh 9:34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. Joh 9:35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? Joh 9:36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? Joh 9:37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. Joh 9:38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshiped him.

Joh 9:39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. Joh 9:40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words and said unto him, Are we blind also? Joh 9:41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

After the return of the Lord on Yom Kippur or day of Atonement to the mount of Olives The feast of Tabernacles will be celebrated

The Feast of TabernaclesZec 14:16 Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD Almighty, and to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.

Zec 14:17 If any of the peoples of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD Almighty, they will have no rain.Zec 14:18 If the Egyptian people do not go up and take part, they will have no rain. The LORD will bring on them the plague he inflicts on the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.

Zec 14:19 This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.

People that worship the Lord get the “Rain of God’s Spirit here and now. We celebrate God “Tabernacleing in us by his Spirit”

Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. Rev 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Rev 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

Rev 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Rev 21:5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
