Courtesy of Wikipedia I have discovered that even in 1666 a Fire of London Disputes Act was passed in order to make way for Christopher Wren’s plans for the redevelopment of London following the Great Fire. It failed, partly because it was too clumsy. We now have the Town and County Planning Act 1990 which is the basis for development control. There have been many (clumsy) amendments since 1990, and a series of (clumsy) Government Planning Guidance and Statements which have been reduced into one (simple) National Planning Policy Framework which, in March 2012, introduced a presumption in favour of sustainable development. This simplified planning regime has provided a far more “user friendly” planning framework. Recently introduced permitted development rights to change the use of farm buildings into residential dwellings gives farmers the opportunity to provide on-farm homes for the next generation and retiring parents. Conversion of redundant rural buildings is now actively encouraged as are other initiatives that boost rural incomes and provide community facilities. Diversification was the buzz word of the 1980s. Sustainable development is today’s catch all phrase. MT-Energie, one of the leading pro- viders of biogas and gas upgrading plants, recently shortlisted for two UK AD and Biogas Industry awards, has recently completed biological and mechanical commissioning of a second AD project for Barfoot Energy Projects Ltd, part of UK fresh vegeta- ble farming and processing Barfoots Group, confirming a continuing strong partnership and a common interest in transforming food waste into energy. Following the success of their first facility on the south coast of England, already awarded the best AD project within the British Anaerobic Diges- tion & Biogas Association (ADBA) national competition. In 2013 Barfoot Energy contracted MT-Energie UK to supply the second of a series of AD projects. After commissioning in early 2014 the facility at Herriard is now produc- ing 1.2MWel. The renewable energy generated is injected into the grid and promptly available for use in house- holds and businesses. Formerly unused commercial waste is now utilized as fermentation feedstock in an efficient and profitable recy- cling system. The new plant processes separated organic residues based on shop returns, expired or wrong la- belled food, which is de-packaged, processed and pasteurized on site. As an additional measure of efficiency, the packaging is washed to ensure minimal loss of organics. The packag- ing materials are therefore easier to recycle, while the wash water is com- pletely reused in the AD process. “This has been a challenging project with many lessons learnt, but contin- ues the development of our experience in this sector - reflects Julian Marks, Barfoots Managing Director, ”It has been essential for us to count on an experienced and high profile technol- ogy partner, such as MT-Energie UK”. At the forefront of innovation, with Barfoot Energy Barfoots of Botley has created an additional branch to their core business of vegetable growing, packaging and distribution, making a firm step towards the zero waste to landfill targets and reducing at the same time the carbon footprint of the group as a whole. Plain flailing

Heavy duty, no frills or things to

go wrong, Wessex CountryLine FL

flail mowers have a reputation as very

tough performers. For control of dense

vegetation, long grass and woodland

rides, heavy hammer flails pulverise

tough material while a full width

adjustable rear roller maintains an even

cutting height. These machines can be

used in-line or offset, and are available

to suit compact tractors from 15hp. They

feature a heavy, cast-iron gearbox and

drive belts that act as shock overload

protection. They are available in 1.1m,

1.25m, 1.4m and 1.55m working widths.

For more demanding applications, look

to the Wessex FLS-155 or FLS-185,

both with hydraulic sideshift, in 1.55m

and 1.85m working widths respectively.

Carrying the same features as the FL

mowers, the Wessex CountryLine Heavy

Duty Flail range has a heavier build and

extremely durable mechanics, with the

hydraulic sideshift and 280mm sideways

travel allowing for easy bypassing

of obstacles such as trees and posts,

resulting in less effort for the operator.

Wessex splits the difference

Anyone looking to just save time on

logsplitting or in a commercial situation

with the need to clear trees, it’s all the

same to the Wessex LS-100 logsplitter.

This powerful British-built logsplitter

actually turns a boring, back-breaking

and time-consuming chore into an

enjoyable task and will handle logs

up to 18”/450mm in height. Strong,

simple, quick and easy to fit to any

tractor with a category 1 three-point

linkage, the LS-100 powers effortlessly

through splitting logs with up to 10

tons of hydraulic force, depending on

the tractor hydraulics. A floor-level bed

makes loading logs onto the splitter

safe and easy, while the two-handed

operation satisfies the health and safety

requirements. The difference the LS-

100 makes, compared to the boring and

time-consuming splitting of logs by

hand, can be measured in the time saved

by the large numbers of contractors,

landscapers, farmers, large estates and

smallholders who rely on their machines

year in, year out. Besides, who wants to

run the risk of using a splitting wedge

and a sledgehammer flying through the

air and hitting you on the shin or perhaps

worse, someone else who happens to be

nearby? Wessex International on 01264

Supplement manufacturer claims that multiple magnesium sources in a mineral are better than one are unsub-stantiated and actually contradicted by published research studies.“Farmers should be wary of mineral supplier claims, particularly with re-spect to the magnesium supplements that are sold at this time of year to reduce the risk of grass staggers,” says Rumenco technical manager David Thornton.“There are few, if any, controlled rumi-nant studies comparing different mag-nesium sources under the same condi-tions. Interactions with other minerals, such as potassium and sodium, will also affect magnesium availability. And the more magnesium sources in a mineral, the greater the level of potential magne-sium ‘lock-up’ problems,” he warns.Mr Thornton does add that there is one published study that has ranked the absorption percentages of 10 different magnesium sources, but the take-out message is misleading.“The magnesium absorption range of the different mineral sources was actu-ally quite narrow at 35-57%. And when you consider that the sources absorbed

best were those never used in propri-etary supplements on cost and low magnesium concentration grounds, you have to seriously question the whole ‘multiple magnesium source’ marketing message,” he says. Mr Thornton says what farmers really should be looking for reassurance on is the true magnesium absorption figure from the mineral to be fed and the parti-cle size of the magnesium source. These factors are far more important.“Particle size in a magnesium source is vital. For example, when you com-pare the two magnesium oxide (Cal Mag) sources – in granular and powder form – the powdered Cal Mag delivers a higher magnesium absorption in the animal,” he says.Molassed, weatherproof buckets and blocks supplemented with the right ‘fine particle’ single magnesium source should be fed free-access at grass. No troughs are needed and these types of supplements are available 24/7. They also prevent bullying and save feed-ing time and labour. Bear in mind too that magnesium is not very palatable, so being molassed, bucket and block products do help maintain the necessary intakes of this essential mineral, Mr Thornton says.
