B ROWNSBORO F ARM F EBRUARY 2015 T HE F ARM G AZETTE Mayor’s Notes: Well, as our friends on the east coast are digging out from two feet of snow, I could- n’t ask for a better time to think ahead towards the pool season. This year the calen- dar is definitely on our side. With an early Memorial Day (May 25th) and a late La- bor Day (September 7th), it looks like we are going to have an extra long pool sea- son. This month our Park’s Board and Commission will be hard at work putting to- gether our pool packet and planning for our fun work-through day in April. When you get your pool packet, please read through all of our member policies. Our member policies (including our guest policies) are designed to provide each of our pool members with a fun, fair and safe experience throughout the summer. If you are new to Brownsboro Farm, I look forward to meeting you at our pool sign-up days and certainly hope that you will consider joining. One area of concern here in the City is street parking. Just to be clear, street park- ing is only permitted when your driveway is full, street parking is never permitted overnight and parking is never permitted on the grass. In those rare occasions when special situations occur, such as driveway paving, please contact your Commissioner or Lt Cabrera. These ordinances are in place in consideration for the safety and con- venience of all of our residents, so please make every effort to comply. As you already know, the best way to keep up with what’s happening here in Brownsboro Farm is to read the Gazette. Cindy and Paige do an outstanding job each month to create a newsletter that is both engaging and informative. There is much more to knowing about what’s going on than reading the meeting minutes. I encourage each of you to stop in and attend a Parks Board or Commission Meeting. As you can tell from the minutes, our meetings are fast, friendly and efficient. There are so many good things going on this year including playground renovations, poten- tial road repaving and a busy calendar of social events – we’d love to hear your thoughts or just catch up with you. If there is any other way that you would like to contribute your talents or positive energies here in Brownsboro Farm please do not hesitate to contact me or a member of the Commission. Warmest Wishes and Happy Valentine’s Day, Marc Salmon

Valentine’s Day

Origins

THE FARM GAZETTE

There are various theories on the origin of Valentine's Day, but the most popular theory dates back to the time of the Roman Empire during the reign of Claudius II, 270 A.D. Clau-dius didn't want men to marry during wartime because he believed single men made better soldiers. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremo-nies. For these actions, Valentine was jailed and then executed by order of the Emperor on February 14. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor's daughter, signing it, "From your Valentine."

The ancient Romans celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia on February 14 in honor of Juno, the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses. Juno was also the goddess of women and mar-riage. Many believe the X symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who could not write their names signed in front of a witness with an X. The X was then kissed to show their sincerity. Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine's Day in hopes that it would make them dream of their future spouse. In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for eve-ryone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve." In 1537, England's King Henry VII officially declared February 14 the holiday of St. Valen-tine's Day.

I have been a resident of Brownsbo-ro Farm for over 11 years and am excited to be involved with what goes on behind the scenes in our neighborhood. My son, West, is eight years old and is in third grade at Norton Elementary. As a Com-missioner, I am representing Area A and will be responsible for Public Works (MSD, LGE, etc.), signage and public roads.

Brownsboro Farm’s very own author will be celebrating the ninth installment in his Folly Beach Mystery series. A Wine and Cheese Release Party will be held for

Bill Noel’s new book, First Light, at Carmichael’s Bookstore, 2720 Frankfort Avenue, on Saturday, February 7 at 4pm. How exciting for Bill! Please join him in celebrat-

ing this amazing accomplishment!

JC Reedy lives at 3809 Old Brownsboro Hills Road. He and his wife, Cindi, have lived in Brownsboro Farm since 1994. Recently, JC and his band, “Jungle Jim and the Monkey Bars,” headlined for the Louisville Family Fun to benefit the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Kentuckiana.

The focus of JC’s band is to give kids their first introduction to a “rock” concert. The concerts teach positive core values, gross motor skills and memory sequencing all in a rock-n-roll sing and dance-a-long, targeting 1st through 4th grade children. All of their songs are interactive and origi-nal. Look for a CD release in the ear-ly fall. JC’s band can also perform acoustically for small groups. If you or your child is in need of guitar or

vocal lessons, JC can also assist you!
