What is CPD? CPD stands for Continuous Professional Development.

Part of being an FA Licensed Coach is a commitment to CPD. It shows you are striving to be the best coach you can be and that you are trying to constantly improve your skills. It means committing to a minimum number of hours of training per year, depending on the level of coaching qualification held.

What are CPD hours? CPD hours are a measure of how many hours of relevant CPD you have done for your licensing level.

For example, if you do the FA Online Laws of the Game course as a Level 1 coach, you will be credited with three hours of CPD.

How many hours do I have to complete? All coaches are required to complete CPD hours in order to maintain their coaching licence. The number of hours that need to be completed depend on the level of qualification you hold (please see below).

Qualification Level Minumum CPD How OftenLevel One 3 hours

Seasonally (for season 2013/14 this must be completed within 1 August 2013 – 31 July 2014)

Level Two 5 hoursLevel Three 5 hoursLevel Four 5 hoursLevel Five 5 hours

How can I complete my CPD hours? CPD can be completed in different ways and The FA Licensed Coaches’ Club offers many ways of achieving this throughout the season.

Your CPD hours are achievable by completing one of FA Learning’s qualifications, attending a CPD workshop or completing one of our online courses.

Each CPD event is targeted at different levels of licensed coaches. Further information on all CPD opportunities are enclosed in the CPD programme.

Are all CPD events the same length? The majority of courses are more than five hours long, but specific events may be shorter and you may therefore be required to do more than one of them to reach the renewal limit.

How can I track my CPD hours? By accessing the ‘My Training’ Section on The FA Licensed Coaches’ Club website or by visiting member services via your County FA website.

After completing a course, the credits will automatically show on your record. It can take up to four weeks for the CPD hours to show on your record, but often it will be much quicker.

Why is CPD appropriate for different levels? CPD events will generally be accredited over a two level banding, so for example levels 1 & 2, 2 & 3 or 3 & 4. This is to ensure that all attendees holding this level can receive appropriate CPD opportunity, with the absolute assurance that it should be meaningful and relative to all attendees. This is a standardised format that covers all of the CPD providers in England, to ensure consistency and a quality assurance process.

How much does CPD cost? CPD costs vary according to the event you are attending. For example an FA Learning national course would cost significantly more than an online course. CPD is not designed to add additional costs to coaches but to recognise the work that coaches are doing and to strive for constant improvement. Most of the CPD events offered by CFA’s are free of charge.

Will there be local CPD events throughout the year? Yes. There will be numerous locally organised CPD events across the country, run by County FAs and delivered by FA Staff or other stakeholders. These events will count towards your CPD hours and are typically free of charge.

Can CPD be completed online? Yes. There will be special webinars and online events held throughout season 2013/14 enabling you to complete your CPD online. You might also be able to complete some online courses, if the content is relevant to your licensing level.

I have just renewed my FA Emergency First Aid and FA Safeguarding Children, will this qualify as my CPD? No. Please be aware that as The FA Emergency First Aid and FA Safeguarding Children qualifications are pre-requisites of the FA Licensed Coaches’ Club, completing these courses will not count towards your CPD requirement.

Can CPD hours be rolled over? No. CPD hours cannot be rolled over. Being an FA Licensed Coach ensures that you are consistently keeping yourself in date and therefore you will need to complete the pre-requisite amount of CPD hours each season. The licence criteria for renewal states that you have to complete the required amount of CPD before you are allowed to renew. CPD is seasonal as we need to ensure we engage with coaches regularly.

What will happen if I do not complete the required CPD? You will not be able to re-licence until the required CPD has been completed. If you then complete your CPD hours after 1 August and then re-licence you will still be required to complete the required amount of CPD for that season to be able to renew for the next season (i.e. it does not count for both seasons).

When and how can I renew? All coaches will be sent renewal invitations from 1 June each season to renew for the following season starting on the 1 August. Please note once you have renewed your licence for the following season your CPD hours will revert back to zero as this is a seasonal requirement.
