some of the new “hot” jobs for the comingdecade and some of the ways we are preparingpeople for them. You'll also meet two peoplewith “hot jobs” now: alumnus Ed Davis, now theBoston Police commissioner, and Bill Gillett, ournew dean for the School of Business. Both areaccomplished individuals.

Speaking of accomplishment, I am delighted to share two university accomplishments. U.S.News & World Report has moved us from Tier 3to Tier 1 among regional universities, and whileI am not a fan of college ranking systems, I dothink this unusual two-tier jump reflects ourimproving reputation. Also, the GatesFoundation named us one of their 31 "Beatingthe Odds" schools (out of about 4,000 schoolsnationwide) for our work in access andimproving graduation rates. We are one ofonly two New England institutions to be sonamed; we also are being featured in a GatesFoundation/McKinsey & Co. report, “Winningby degrees: the strategies of highly productive higher-education institutions.”

Getting better, getting bigger, and serving families for whom college is not a guarantee. I can't think of a more exciting time in theuniversity's institutional life. The magazinegives you a feel for some of that work andwhy SNHU is so much talked about in highereducation circles.

Dear Readers,

What a fall it has been!

We planned to welcome 710 new students tothe main campus in September and insteadhad 1,000. As the possibility of that numberbecame apparent, our staff scrambled tomake sure everyone was well served, linesremained short, and the campus would beready. Their hard work paid off – the campusis full, but it does not feel overcrowded. Ournew academic building and dining hall werecompleted just in the nick of time.

Similarly, our nontraditional student popula-tions continue to grow as well, mostlyin online programs, but also at our centers. We had 1,000 new students for the September term start alone.

With 88 staff based in Manchester'sMillyard to serve those students, we found

ourselves crammed in and understaffed. Sowe will soon add an additional 10,000square feet of office space on the floorabove our current space and add a numberof new, full-time staff. Indeed, in this dis-mal economy, SNHU is providing one of thefew bright spots when it comes to jobs.

My Top 5Help take care of my granddaughter.It’s our first grandchild and she’s 6months old and my wife and I lookafter her every day.

Extend my gardening.Well, everybody probably knows that I’minto gardening. In the past it’s been basi-cally organic gardening and vegetablegardening, which I definitely am continu-ing. But I’d like to extend the gardeninginto probably doing some landscaping.

Also, I haven’t really been good in thepast in terms of staying ahead of thepicking, freezing and canning, andbasically I want to do more of that.We’re also, actually, making baby food for our granddaughter.

Travel.We have friends and relatives throughoutthe United States that we really havenever had a chance to visit. I have afriend in California that I’ve never visit-ed. We have relatives in the PacificNorthwest, another cousin in Florida, relatives in Ohio, Tennessee. I was thedirector of the BASHA program for aboutseven years and I went to England everyyear; I visited Scotland, Ireland, Malta,and traveled through Canada and reallyenjoyed it, but it was primarily work

trips. We’d like to go to the village where(my wife’s) parents (and) her grandpar-ents were from in northern Greece. I’dlike to go back and visit Scotland, whichis where some of my relatives were from.

Play the guitar.Anybody who grew up in the 1960sowned a guitar and played folk music,and I’ve played on and off for years butreally have never gotten as good as I’vewanted to. I’ve recently ordered a bunchof tapes – primarily blues, finger-pickingblues. I bought a new guitar a coupleyears ago but just haven’t had time to sitdown and get better at it.

Also, when my daughter was growing up, I took care of her and I used to play guitar and we’d play children’ssongs, and I’d like to do that with my granddaughter as well.

Get outside.I do play golf; in the past coupleyears, not as much as I’ve wanted to. Iplay tennis still every weekend and I’dlike to continue doing that. In the win-ter I cross-country ski. And then thereare a couple of other outdoor activitiesthat I’ve wanted to get involved in.One is kayaking. The other one is bird watching.

We ask members of the university community about a few of their favorite things. For this issue, we talked to Dr. Richard Erskine, who recently retired after 32 yearswith the university, about the top five things he wants to do during his retirement:

My main goal is to stay very active.I’ve been retired since April 30th andI still don’t have time to do everythingI’ve wanted to do. So when people askme if I miss my job, I say, “Well, youknow, I miss the people, but I’m toobusy to miss the job.” I’mkeeping busy every day. Idon’t see myself gettingbored at all.

About the Ethics ChairThe Christos and Mary Papoutsy DistinguishedChair in Ethics and Social Responsibility wasestablished in 1999 to assist students in learningabout and leading ethical professional and per-sonal lives, drawing upon the works of ancientGreek intellectuals whose teachings have shapedthe history of Western civilization from antiquityto the present.

Goldsmith Named Ethics ChairDr. Michele Goldsmith has been named the university’s Christos and MaryPapoutsy Chair in Ethics and Social Responsibility. The two-year appointmentcommenced in the fall.

the first primatologist to analyze theimpacts of ecotourism on mountain goril-las in Bwindi Impenetrable NationalPark, Uganda. During the summer shespent a month in Africa researching theimpact of tourism on the gorilla popula-tion in the Uganda region.

Always interested in ethical issuessurrounding conservation, her mostrecent publications explore theimpacts of habituation (reducing ani-mals’ fear towards humans) for bothresearch and tourism. Her work hasbeen featured in the media and shehas published many scientific articles.Her edited volume, “Gorilla Biology:A Multidisciplinary Approach,” isused in universities across the globe.

Goldsmith, an associate professor,joined the Department of Science atSouthern New Hampshire Universityin the fall of 2008.

The purpose of the chair is to educatethe SNHU community about the socialand ethical issues in today’s globalenvironment.

For the first year, Goldsmith has beenawarded a sabbatical-type leave to conduct research. The second year ofthe appointment will focus on fosteringcampus and community-wide dialogueand debate about ethical practices.

Goldsmith is highly regarded world-wide for her contributions in science,especially in the field of primatol-ogy. As a biological anthropologist,she has been studying gorillabehavior and well-being in Africasince 1991. For her doctoralresearch she was awarded aFulbright Scholarship to examine poorly known populations of western lowland gorillas in the Congo Basin. Later, as a National Geographicresearcher, she was

Every year, a new class of first-year students withdifferent backgrounds,experiences and goals

come to campus. The SNHU Common Book Program wascreated in part to provide these students with a commonexperience that they can use to start conversations withtheir classmates, as well as faculty and staff.

This year’s common book selection is “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer. It’s the story of Christopher McCandless, a young man from a well-to-do family from Virginia whochose to invent a new life by giving away his $25,000 savings, abandoning his car and most of his possessions,hitchhiking to Alaska, and walking alone into the wilder-ness north of Mt. McKinley. The book begins with a moosehunter finding the young man’s body and then tells the storyof McCandless’ journey.

The common book literally puts participants on the same pageand gives them something to talk about with people they haven’tmet before. First-year students also can compete for a $1,000scholarship in a common book essay contest.

A committee of faculty and staff from various departmentsselects the common book each year. This year the committeeconsidered 50 or 60 different titles, ranging from graphic novels

to science fiction to “Grendel,” the story of the monster fromBeowulf. “Into the Wild” was chosen based on its wide appeal,according to committee Chair Marilyn Fenton.

“This book invites us to evaluate our dreams and consider whatthey are worth to us. Were they realistic? Would they really makeus happy? If our dreams continue to drive us, what are we willingto sacrifice to see them fulfilled?” she said.

A number of activities are planned around this year’s selection,including a screening of the movie “Into the Wild” and a screen-ing of “Alone in the Wilderness,” a film about a survivalist inAlaska who is successful going off alone and making a life forhimself. The committee is also hoping to get the Outing Clubinvolved, possibly for a mountain climbing trip.

“We hope to have the expert advice of those who know ourown mountains best, like the Appalachian Mountain Club,”Fenton said.

There will be multiple dialogues and lectures about the book,both in and out of class. Faculty, staff and alumni are invitedto read and discuss the book as well.

This year’s common book is available for faculty and staff in theAcademic Affairs and Student Affairs offices. Other members ofthe university community are encouraged to pick up a copythrough the library or the campus bookstore.

designed this poster for my History ofDesign class project,” Norton said.

“My advisor, Tracy Dow, persuaded me to enter the piece into the CreativeClub’s Annual Exhibition. The piecehad to make it past an external jury to be accepted into the show, and then be selected by the judges as a winner.I was excited to find out the piece wasaccepted, and even more excited at the exhibition opening when I won the student category. It was a great honor.”

Southern New Hampshire University will be well represented in the AmericanGraphic Design Awards Annual. SNHUwon five awards in the annual designcompetition presented by GraphicDesign USA, four of them by our internalMarketing & Communications team andanother by freelance design firm GreyCat Design.

SNHU’s Timothy Norton ’10, a graphicdesign major, won the Best Studentaward in the 22nd annual NH CreativeClub Juried Art Show last spring.

“A few years ago I began listening to alot of psychedelic rock from the 1960s.I loved the concert posters from thetime, which led to a strong interest inthe Art Nouveau style of design, fromwhich the psychedelic designers drewheavy inspiration. I started making myown psychedelic rock posters. I

Less than a year after Edward F. Davis ’86 became Boston’s police com-missioner in December 2006, an assailant shot and killed 13-year-oldSteven Odom in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood as the youngsterwalked home with friends after playing basketball.

might not have occurred, Davis said, withoutthe Dorchester community’s help.

“People in the neighborhood helped us withdescriptions and told us things that, quitefrankly, several years before we might nothave received simply because they werefeeling that the police weren’t really thereto assist,” he said.

Taking it to the StreetsEstablishing strong relationships betweenpolice and citizens has been a priority forDavis throughout his career. The formerLowell, Mass., police superintendent hasbeen a longtime advocate of communitypolicing, a model that encourages officersto get out of their cruisers and cultivatecommunity bonds.

While police engagement with residentscan make a difference in solving crimes,community policing has a larger goal.

“It’s not arrest and prosecution,” Davissaid. “It’s prevention.”

The crime shocked the city and led policeto speculate that Odom was a victim of mis-taken identity. After police investigated formore than a year, Suffolk County DistrictAttorney Daniel F. Conley announced thatOdom’s killer was Charles Bunch Jr., an 18-year-old who was murdered 10 days afterOdom. He also announced the arrest of 19-year-old David Johnson, who allegedly sup-plied Bunch with the murder weapon.

Last April, Johnson pleaded guilty to beingan accessory to murder and related charges.Under the terms of a plea bargain approvedby Odom’s parents, he was sentenced to sixto eight years in prison.

Although Bunch’s murder prevented Odom’sshooter from facing charges, the investigationgave the Odom family some justice. That

Cutting CrimeDavis has demonstrated that com-munity policing works. In 12 yearsas Lowell’s top cop, he was credit-ed with cutting serious crimes –such as homicide, rape, robberyand aggravated assault – by 60percent. And in his first three yearsin Boston, the city’s serious crimesdropped 18 percent and shootingsfell 40 percent, Davis said at anSNHU campus lecture last April.

A Lowell native whose father wasa police officer, Davis joined hishometown force in 1978. Heenrolled at SNHU in 1984 as atransfer student and attendedclasses on weekends while work-ing full time. He graduated in1986 with a Bachelor of Sciencedegree in social science.

In Lowell, Davis worked as a beatcop, a detective, and a vice andnarcotics officer before beingnamed superintendent in 1994. Asthe department’s leader, he reducedcrime by deploying “safe-streetteams” of officers into neighbor-hoods where violence traditionallyoccurred. He has used a similarapproach in Boston, sending teamsof six officers and a sergeant intothe city’s most troubled areas.

“We did a longitudinal study onshootings in the city over 30 years,and it’s remarkable how similar thepatterns were 30 years ago towhere they are today,” he said.

A Neighborhood ApproachDavis still finds time to contributeto the nation’s law-enforcementdialogue. Since President BarackObama’s 2008 election, he hasconversed with the U.S.Department of Justice’s CommunityOriented Police Service Officeabout the federal role in enhancingcommunity-policing efforts acrossthe country.

“We have an administration nowthat is concerned about [policing]and is working closely with us onmaking a difference,” he said.

Although Davis has reduced crimein Boston, challenges remain. OnMay 30, two assailants allegedlyjumped 14-year-old NicholasFomby-Davis while the youth wasriding a motor scooter inDorchester. While one suspectheld the boy down, the secondmurdered him, authorities said.

Police quickly apprehended thesuspects, 20-year-old CrisostomoLopes and 16-year-old JoshuaFernandes, who pleaded notguilty to murder. But in the wakeof the stunning crime, Davis took

a bold step toward preventing further violence, having hisdepartment distribute a fliershowing photos of 10 suspectedmembers of a gang alleged to beresponsible for Fomby-Davis’slaying and asking the public forinformation on the individuals.

“We are doing this because webelieve the community can play arole in making the individuals whoare responsible for the execution ofa 14-year-old boy outcasts in theirown neighborhood,” Davis told theBoston Globe.

Although Davis’ shaming tacticprompted debate, it demonstrateshis commitment to communitypolicing. And despite the demandsof his job, Davis never seems to get

too ruffled, said Bernard Melekian,director of the Community OrientedPolice Service Office, who hasworked with Davis on policingissues for more than a decade.

“Commissioner Davis works in oneof the more challenging cities inthe United States,” Melekian said.“It would not be surprising to seehim get overwhelmed by day-to-day events, but he never does.He’s always calm and thoughtful,and he’s one of the most forward-thinking chiefs I know.”

serve – is as important in higher educationas in the business world.

How will you integrate your tremendous involvement in thelocal and regional community with SNHU? The small business community could decid-edly use the talents of SNHU faculty andstudents to better understand their marketsand find opportunities for growth. The localand regional companies that trade in inter-national markets can similarly utilize theexpertise within the SNHU community tobetter access those markets. In addition,there is a demonstrated need within thesocial business sector for specialized education and assistance in businessprocesses and organization. SNHU can help with this and also bring organizationstogether. All of these initiatives shouldbring more opportunities for our students aswell to get involved with local businesses ina variety of business sectors.

Do you see a relationship between business and the arts,culture and social causes? Absolutely. While it is essential that busi-

An Industry PerspectiveHow will you infuse your previous experience of working asa president of a for-profit business to nonprofit education? In any leadership role, it is essential thatthe organization has clear goals and ashared mission that is appropriately aspira-tional. The ability to guide the organizationtowards those goals with a strong emphasison the market – in our case, the students we

nesses support the arts and thoseorganizations that are dedicatedto making our society stronger,more just and ultimately moresuccessful, it is also important torecognize that business in a verybroad sense is the science andpursuit of effective and dedicatedorganization. The groups andorganizations that support thearts and social causes are withinthe broader business communityand can benefit from the applica-tion of sound business practices.Also, of course, those organiza-tions that make our communitymore livable and more just aremaking the business communitystronger as well by making it eas-ier to attract and retain goodemployees.

Getting Down to BusinessWhat do you believe is the role of highereducation in business? There are tremendous advantagesfor both business and business

schools in developing partnershipsand cooperative arrangements.Businesses benefit through beingable to better shape educators andinstitutions in producing graduateswho are ready to begin helpingtheir new employers immediately.While the schools that best under-stand and adapt to the marketplacewill have the most success placinggraduates and preparing them forsuccessful careers.

What do you believe business students shouldknow/be able to do when they graduate?Business school graduates musthave basic competencies inaccounting, finance, marketing andmanagement that apply to all busi-ness and organizational endeavors,but also require a contextual under-standing of the economies, marketsand the world they will be entering.The abilities to communicate effec-tively, work on a team, and to beable to process and analyze dataare also essential.

After HoursWhat is the greatest lesson you’ve learnedfrom your family? There is no substitute for a supportive and loving family. If home is the place where, when you have to go there, theyhave to take you in, then makesure you want to go there andthey want to take you in.

What might we find you doing when you’renot on campus? Well, I’m building a cedar-stripcanoe right now; something I’vewanted to do for about 20 yearsand have finally gotten started.

Your dog’s name is Scout. Why Scout? My wife and I were both reading“To Kill a Mockingbird” when wegot our first dog. We’ve had twoScouts and a Boo.

You have four children ranging in age from10 through 22. If we were to ask each ofyour children to describe you with oneadjective, what would they say? None of my kids would limitthemselves to one adjective.They’re great people but don’t like to be constrained and theyundoubtedly would surprise mewith their responses. One of themost amazing things about parent-ing is how four children can growup with the same parents in thesame house and be so different.

Learning to read is the key to making

sense of the world, says Assistant

Professor Mary Westwater.

In New Zealand, Westwater assisted teachersfrom Wellington College, immersing herselfin dozens of literacy courses that emphasizedintervention, reading recovery and supportservices.

She coached competitive literacy teams,consulted with some of the country’s bestteachers, and visited schools within a 100-mile radius of the teachers’ college.

An assistant professor in SNHU’s School ofEducation, Westwater shares stories abouther travels, impressing on students that theability to make sense of the world throughreading and writing is critical inevery discipline.

reading to learn,” she said, refer-ring to an educational philosophyknown as “reading across thecurriculum.”

Teachers learn to teach, and teachto learn, she said.

“I’m teaching in a way that’s verydifferent from the way I wastaught,” Westwater said.

What hasn’t changed over the past37 years is Westwater’s convictionthat every child is capable of learn-ing, and that children learn bestwhen they feel safe and respected.

“We need to create a family in ourclassroom and a community in ourschools,” she said, borrowing fromthe traditions of her Catholic schooleducation and her first job, teach-ing third grade in a Catholic school.

Right place, right timeFor Westwater, teaching is as nat-ural as breathing.

She dropped out of college aftertwo years to take a job teachingthird grade in a Catholic school,returned to college after a year tofinish her degree, and spent thenext 15 years teaching elementaryand middle school in Rockland

County, N.Y.

“I never wanted tobe anything elsebut a teacher,”she said.

She was taking an English as asecond language educationcourse at SNHU and makingplans to retire from a 21-yearcareer in the Amherst, N.H.,school district when a facultymember in the School ofEducation approached her.

“They wanted a well-educatedpractitioner who had been inschool at all levels, someone whocould talk about what it’s reallylike out there,” she said. “I was inthe right place at the right time.”

Colleagues and students couldn’tagree more.

“Mary Westwater is an amazingteacher,” said Mary Sullivan Heath,dean of the School of Education.“Her classes are in high demand.She’s loved by her students and col-leagues, and she keeps us alllaughing with her stories about herfamily and her travels.”

Heath said Westwater “goes theextra mile and then some.” Forexample, if a student needs toschedule a meeting outside regu-lar office hours, Westwater “isthere,” Heath said, recalling howthe assistant professor once metwith a busy student at 6:30 a.m.

A little bit of heavenWestwater said thatteaching at SNHU is asgood as it gets.

“I love it. I have found alittle bit of heaven,”she said. “It’s kindof like the icingon the cake forme, since it hasbeen my passionto inspire teachersand to encourageyoung people to gointo what I think is the noblest ofprofessions.”

Pursuing sustainability in organizations is thepurview of the sus-tainability director,who typicallyfocuses on a com-pany’s energy useand all aspects of purchasing, pro-duction, facili-ties operationand construc-tion, often with a goal of creating azero-waste, zero-pollu-

tion operationsstrategy, said Roy

Morrison, director of theOffice of Sustainability at SNHU.

“Economic growth meansecological improvement,not ecological destruc-tion; this will be a

crucial task for the 21st cen-tury,” Morrison said. “Theposition of sustainabilitymanager or director will be integral for business andmanagerial success and playan increasingly importantrole in decision making,entrepreneurial success and the creation of securevalue chains.”

In the future, job growth in the green sector will be driven dramatically bythe eventual transition to alow-carbon economy, saidDr. Paul Barresi, chair ofthe Environment, Politicsand Society Department.

“How quickly that’s going to happen and preciselywhat form that’s going totake remains up in the air,”Barresi said. “But the realgrowth ultimately is going tobe the result of what both

the private sector and pub-lic sectors are going to haveto do to slow down and ulti-mately to adapt to globalclimate change.

“These professionals will beconcerned not merely withreducing energy uses toslow down the process …but with adapting to variousspinoff effects with econom-ic implications caused bythe very high concentrationsof greenhouse gases thatwe've emitted into theatmosphere already, and bythe climatic disruption towhich those concentrationsalready have committed us,”Barresi said. “There’s amarket for applicants withthe relevant credentialsnow, and the demand forqualified professionals willonly grow in the future.”

Advancements in technolo-gy and increasing comfortwith storing personal infor-mation digitally has led to agrowing crop of tech-savvy“bad guys,” said Dr. LundyLewis, who, in addition tochairing SNHU’s ComputerInformation TechnologyDepartment, also conductscybersecurity research anddevelopment for the U.S.Air Force and U.S. Army.

More bad guys means “youneed more good guys tocounteract that,” Lewis said.

In this case, the person inthe white hat is the cyberse-curity officer.

SNHU’s good guy,Information Security OfficerRobert Witmer, said compa-nies that collect personalinformation – such as uni-versities and banks – mustmeet a number of regulatoryrequirements aimed atkeeping that informationsafe. One role of the cyber-security officer is to help institutions meet theserequirements and protectsuch information from dailythreats.

“Social Security numbersare worth a lot of money onthe black market. Someone’scredit card numbers areworth a lot of money. Aslong as there’s value, some-one is going to try to get it,”Witmer said. “The universi-ty gathers data; we’re

entrusted with that data andwe need to protect it.”

There are a lot of opportuni-ties in this growing field,Witmer said.

“It’s such a broad field.Opportunities exist for every-one, from the übertech, wherethe person is doing bits andbytes, actually trackingintruders through thesystems, to the busi-ness major whois working tomake thesecuritypoliciesandactionsfit thebusi-ness,” he said.“There’salways some-thing happening.”

It’s hard to pick only one area of growth from all the occupations housedwithin homeland security(so we won’t).

Homeland security is ahuge umbrella that coversnumerous agencies andoccupations – and it willonly grow larger, said RafaelRojas, Jr., an assistant pro-fessor of justice studies whocame to the university afteran almost 30-year career inlaw enforcement.

Emergency management,law enforcement, transporta-tion security, intelligenceand analysis, border patrol,and infrastructure protec-tion all fall into this catego-ry, and job growth is pre-dicted across the board.

The Department ofHomeland Security has more than180,000

employees; there are morethan 80 federal law enforce-ment agencies and morethan half a million policeofficers in the U.S. today,Rojas said. TheTransportation SecurityAdministration alone hasdoubled in size in the lastfive years, he added.

“There are hundreds ofthousands of people workingtogether to make sure thatthis country is not attackedagain,” he said.

Rojas, who worked in NewYork City and lost 37 co-workers on Sept. 11, 2001,said the attacks that day“catapulted the occupationsin the justice field.”

“These are occupations thatby nature tend to grow

because we’re becom-ing a more sophisti-cated society, weare growing inpopulation size,”he said. “It wasexacerbatedby the fact of9-11.”

Looking Back:10 Years in the Northeast-10By Greg Royce, Director of Athletics Communications

Ten years ago, the SNHU Athletic Department needed a new conferencehome. A decade later, the Penmen have thrived in one of the bestDivision II conferences in the country, the Northeast-10.

Athletics Chip Polak, who spearheaded themove to the Northeast-10 along with formerVice President George Larkin and formerPresident Richard Gustafson. “TheNortheast-10 is where we should be, andit’s a perfect fit.”

Taking TitlesIt didn’t take long for SNHU to get comfort-able. The men’s soccer team captured theNortheast-10 Tournament title in its firstyear in the league. The past decade hasarguably been the best 10-year stretch forPenmen athletics in history. SNHU teamscaptured six Northeast-10 titles, led bymen’s soccer’s three. Golf took a pair oftitles, while women’s tennis earned theleague crown in 2010. The Penmen made15 NCAA Tournament appearances by sixdifferent teams, including three that hadnever appeared in the NCAAs (golf,women’s tennis, softball). All but one ofSNHU’s 15 athletic programs has competedin a league tournament.

As a testament to its broadbased success,the Penmen were seventh out of 15 schoolsin the Northeast-10 President’s Cup in2008-09, which measures the overall suc-

The New EnglandCollegiate Conference was on the verge offolding, with several schools moving up toDivision I. Unless they could find a newconference, the Penmen would be forcedinto life as an independent, making it hardto put together schedules and virtuallyimpossible to make NCAA tournaments.

In the fall of 1999, SNHU, along with NECCrivals Southern Connecticut, UMass Lowelland Franklin Pierce, were invited to theNortheast-10 Conference, New England’sother Division II conference at the time. WithSaint Rose also joining, the Northeast-10 wasset to compete with 15 members starting inthe fall of 2000.

“I felt we had to get in a conference, and atthe time there were only two left in theregion. We had to take measures to get intoeither one,” said SNHU Director of

cess of Northeast-10 athleticdepartments. SNHU was able toaccomplish this despite sponsor-ing the league minimum forsports.

“A lot of the success we’ve had,it’s because we have had greatcoaches,” Polak said. “The com-petition’s been a lot tougher in allsports, which is a good thing.Fortunately, we’ve been able tohave success in such a competi-tive conference.”

A Boon to AthleticsDuring its association with theNortheast-10, SNHU athletics hasgrown considerably. Three sportswere reinstated after a decade-long hiatus (men’s and women’stennis, men’s golf) and a fourth(women’s lacrosse) was added inspring 2004. An addition to theathletic complex, including a newfitness center and four new lockerrooms, was completed in 2001.The soccer/lacrosse field, nowknown as Larkin Field, receivedartificial turf in the summer of2003. The school’s baseball andsoftball fields as well as thetennis courtshave all beenrenovated. Priorto joining theNortheast-10,athletic scholar-

sarily true in the NECC or inother conferences in the region.The conference routinely sendsmultiple teams to nearly everyNCAA championship. In the pastdecade, 10 league teams havecaptured national championships.

“(In the NECC) as a player, youknew there were games that weregoing to be a win. Same as acoach: You knew there were teamsat the bottom you could beat and itwasn’t going to be a problem,” saidProuty, who guided the Penmen tothe NCAA Tournament in 2003.“Now, in the Northeast-10, with 16teams, No. 16 can beat No. 1, No.2, No. 3. You’ve got to get kids tolook at it, that every game counts,and that this conference isextremely tough.”

Like Prouty, Spirou has had suc-cess in the Northeast-10, guidingthe Penmen to a pair of leaguetitle game appearances and threeNCAA appearances. However,Spirou said that excellence washarder to achieve.

“The Northeast-10 is one of thebest, if not the best, in the coun-try. There’s not a night as a coachwhere you can say that we don’thave to bring our A game. (In theNECC) there were games that youknew if you just came in andplayed, you would get a W. Youcan’t say that in this league.”

ships were only offered in a hand-ful of sports; now they are avail-able in more than a dozen.

“If we were going to join theNortheast-10, we had to upgradewhatever we were doing,” saidveteran SNHU men’s basketballcoach Stan Spirou. “The schoolhas done a great job of staying ontop of what we need. Our fitnessroom is second to none. We’vealways had a good basketballarena, but maybe we were lack-ing in some of the other stuff weneeded to compete. Now, we’vegone ahead of many of theschools we’re competing against.”

Terry Prouty, who has served aswomen’s soccer coach since 1999and was SNHU’s softball coachfor seven years, agrees.

“We’ve changed a lot in the last10 years, both as a departmentand as a university,” said Prouty,who was a two-sport standout atSNHU and is in the Athletic Hallof Fame. “We do things righthere, and I think we have to, tostay competitive.”

Parks and Smith received national attentionfollowing their act of sportsmanship duringthe New England Championships on Oct. 10,2009. The pair came across a runner fromBoston University who was lying face-downon the course, unconscious from dehydration.They stayed with the runner, helped himregain consciousness and got him to the near-est medical tent, where a waiting ambulancetook him to the hospital. As a result, neitherParks nor Smith finished the race.

Honors and Milestones

Sorrell was named to the league’s All-Rookie Teamafter earning Freshman of the Week honors fourtimes during the season.

Recent graduate John Frey ’10 was named to theNortheast-10 All-Academic Team in ice hockey forthe third time in his career. A two-year captain,Frey wrapped up his career with 33 goals and 41assists and was fourth on the Penmen in scoring lastseason.

The women’s lacrosse team advanced to theNortheast-10 semifinals for the fifth straight year.Senior Sherry Darrell, Carole Lee ’10 and junior Emily Mongeauwere all All-Region selections, with Darrell garner-ing All-America honors from the website wom-enslacrosse.com. Lee became the first SNHU playerselected to compete in the Division II North/SouthAll-Star Game.

Darrell also garnered Northeast-10 First Team hon-ors, while Lee, Mongeau and senior Kaley Watermanwere all named to the Second Team.

Sophomore Greg Reynolds was named to the men’slacrosse Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team after lead-ing the Penmen in scoring with 28 goals and 17assists. Junior Alex Whitney was selected to the NEILAAll-New England Team in the midfield.

Both the baseball and softball teams were in con-tention for Northeast-10 playoff spots up until thefinal weekend of the season. Baseball had a league-high four freshmen named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team. Designated hitter Matt Boulter andpitchers Taylor Eames, John Pickowicz and Derrick Sylvesterwere all chosen.

In softball, sophomore Kate Stanley was named to theNortheast-10 Third Team and All-Rookie Teamsafter batting .276 with a team-high and programrecord 12 home runs.

Tennis Anyone? The SNHU women’s tennis team enjoyed its bestseason in program history last spring, going 20-2overall, winning the Northeast-10 regular seasonand tournament titles and advancing to the secondround of the NCAA Tournament. Senior AmberChandronnait repeated as the league’s Player of theYear, while sophomore Alena Mukdaprakorn was theleague’s Freshman of the Year. Head coach GregCoache was both the Northeast-10 and ITA EastRegion Coach of the Year.

The Penmen had a total of eight Northeast-10 All-Conference selections. Chandronnait,Mukdaprakorn and senior Catalina Echeverry were allFirst Team selections in singles and doubles, whileAlison Waring ’10 was a First Team selection in doublesteamed with Echeverry. Junior Kara Pease was hon-ored on the Second Team in singles, while Peaseand classmate Samantha Jean were Third Team per-formers in doubles.

Director of Athletics Chip Polak has announced that six new members will beinducted into the SNHU Athletic Hall of Fame on Jan. 29, 2011.

Matt Arvanitis ’03 was a two-yearmember of the golf team anda two-time Northeast-10 FirstTeam All-Conference per-former. He was named the2001 Northeast-10 Player ofthe Year after capturing theleague’s championship tour-nament with a two-day recordscore of 137. CurrentlySNHU’s golf coach, Arvanitisposted a career stroke aver-age of 75.8, good for secondin program history.

Chris Hart ’05 graduated as thebaseball program’s all-timehit leader, collecting 189 hitsover a four-year career. Atwo-time Northeast-10 All-Conference selection, Hartwas a First Team selection asa senior while also garneringAll-Region honors. Hart’scareer batting average of .335ranks fifth in school history.

Joe Panaro ’72 was a four-yearstarter for the baseball teamplaying shortstop and thirdbase. A three-time NEIBAAll-Conference selection, hewas also the league’s defen-sive Player of the Year in1971. Panaro led the Penmento four straight NEIBA con-ference titles and batted .388in 1970 as a sophomore.Panaro served as a team captain as a senior.

Scott Proulx ’01 was a four-yearmember of the hockey teamand sits 12th in programhistory with 128 points and10th with 57 career goals.As a junior, Proulx wasnamed an All-Americanafter leading the Penmenwith 28 goals. Over hiscareer the Penmen went 63-34-5 and made four ECACTournament appearancesand an NCAA appearance.

Chris Rivard ’03 was a two-yearstandout for the golf team ashe and Arvanitis led thePenmen to back-to-backNortheast-10 championships.The 2002 Northeast-10Player of the Year, he cardeda Northeast-10 tourney-low66, a record that stands tothis day. Garnering medalisthonors five times in hiscareer, his 75.6 stroke aver-age is a school record. Rivardfinished fourth at the NCAARegional in 2003.

Dan Roy ’01 ranks 11th in careerpoints (133) and ninth incareer goals (65) despiteplaying just three seasons for the hockey team. He wasan All-American as a juniorafter leading the Penmen with51 goals. The Penmen madethree ECAC Tournamentappearances with Roy as

They had been living in a corporateapartment rental while their home wasbeing built in Ocean Springs, Miss. Theapartment complex was devastated, aswas much of the infrastructure in thelarger community. McHale and her hus-band, Gary Bouchard, quickly decidedto pack up their cars with all that theycould rescue, and with McHale’s 89-year-old grandmother, their 13-year-olddaughter, the dog and the cats, theyheaded back to Litchfield, Maine,where they had a camp.

From Mississippi Back to MaineThey had been living in the south foronly about a year, McHale havingaccepted a great opportunity withNorthrop Grumman Shipbuilding onthe Gulf Coast. She would remain inMaine with her family for two months,working remotely, until temporaryhousing could be found near the com-pany. Her husband and daughterwould stay through the school year toensure some stability in their familylife while McHale flew back and forthas time and projects allowed.

“We had really been through an emo-tional rollercoaster,” McHale said. “Itried to assure our daughter that oneday she would look back on this experi-ence in her life and appreciate the per-spective it had given her about what’simportant in life, the value of posses-sions and the strength of her characterhaving lived through this period.”

A Career in ShipbuildingRaised in Maine, McHale completed her undergraduate degree in foreign languages at Trinity College inConnecticut. She returned to Maine following graduation and was hired byBath Iron Works as an interpreter for a Spanish shipbuilding contract. Hereagerness to learn new skills andresponsibilities led to her involvement in BIW’s management development pro-gram. She earned her M.B.A. at SNHU’sBrunswick Center in 1985 and has so farenjoyed a long and successful career inthe shipbuilding industry.

McHale has been serving with NorthropGrumman Shipbuilding – Gulf Coast as a program manager for large shipconstruction and was recently nameddirector of the company’s Land-BasedTesting Facility in Pascagoula, Miss.The shipbuilder recently commencedconstruction on a $2.5 billion project toprovide the Navy with a state-of-the-art,large amphibious ship designed to sup-port aviation assault missions – a pro-posal McHale wrote in the early monthsafter Katrina hit.

Back Home in MississippiNow, as McHale and her family havesettled in to enjoy the beauty of theGulf region, they are facing anotherchallenge – the BP oil spill.

“It has created a great deal of renewedangst in a part of the country whoseculture is the water – work, play and

live,” McHale said. “The Gulf Coastpeople are extremely resilient andwhile concerned with the long-termeffects of the oil spill, we continue tolive life as it evolves.”

They eventually will call Maine homeagain, when they retire.

Until then, McHale looks forward towork every day.

“I really enjoy that each day is differentin my role,” she said. “And one of thebest parts of this work is the knowledgethat you are working with a very large,diverse team to produce a ’floating city,’a city that will be used by the Navy orCoast Guard, to protect those brave menand women who are put in harm’s wayand need to be ready to execute theirintended mission.

“There is tremendous pride in work-manship and purpose in shipbuilding –I get to see it happen every day.”

When he retired in August after 40years, Michael DeBlasi ’70, former director ofAlumni and Major Gifts, ended a careerthat has always been more than a job.

“SNHU has been my life! I stayed solong because of the people. Throughthe years, colleagues, students andalumni have been wonderful to workwith,” DeBlasi said. “I also was ableto work in so many aspects of the uni-versity. Probably my favorite and mostrewarding job was that of instructor. Itaught for 10 years, meeting great stu-dents who became successful alumni.”

DeBlasi’s most recent position was hiseighth with the university. DeBlasi spent22 years in admissions, transitioningfrom director of admissions to director of

Alumni and Community Relations in1992. In 2005, he became director ofAlumni and Donor Relations; in 2007,he was named director of Alumni andMajor Gifts.

Dr. Richard A. Gustafson, who waspresident of the college from 1987 to2003, said DeBlasi has been a greatambassador for the college.

Dr. Doug Blais ’88, chair of the SportManagement Department, agreed.

“He’s been all about the individualand that connection,” Blais said.

President Paul LeBlanc said DeBlasi’sconnections have been extensive.

“I spend a lot of time meeting alumniand almost every one of them knows

Mike in some way. He admitted some,advised others, was a classmate or afriend, or has worked to garner theirsupport for the university. Over his 40years of service, Mike may know moremembers of the SNHU family thananyone who has walked this campus,”he said.

DeBlasi coordinated the annualPresident’s Cup Golf Tournament for20 years. The tournament has raised$600,000 to support student scholar-ships. Last summer, it was renamedthe DeBlasi Cup in his honor.

“For the past 20 years Michael has runthis tournament, and it has gotten bet-ter and better each year. Michael’sname has become synonymous with thetournament itself and with the profes-sionalism in the way it is put on,” saidDon Brezinski, vice president of theOffice of Institutional Advancement.“It seems most appropriate to renamethe tournament in his honor.”

Proceeds from the tournament will benefitthe Michael DeBlasi Scholarship Fund.
