Blessed CHRISTmas and Happy New Year 2012.

Thank you for this Newsletter and for the strength with which you maintain the objectives of the EWF. Your words and wisemind make me pleased to know we have such a strong and beautiful Warrior Queen on I&I Battlefront.

You ask good questions about what we all are doing to change the tide of takeovers of African land and people in the new colonialism. China is repeating the example of our former European colonizers, so we should not be surprised when they set up TV stations like the BBC and CNN and takeover huge tracts of land to feed their population. You are not alone in thinking how great it would be if it was us, the Kidnapped Children, who were wealthy enough to be doing these things instead, installing solar powered technology in villages, building dams for irrigating super-farms, setting up schools of engineering, making films and music for the international fans of our culture.

Yet, I do not despair. I don't know why, but I have an inner feeling that this year has bloomed as a new beginning of a new attitude among ourselves that will bring forth much fruit. A lot of new pictures of the Emperor and of Ethiopian Orthodox icons were circulating over the recent HolyDays - Xmas to New Year to Ethiopian Christmas - and they seem to have acted like a tonic for those of us committed to the movement of JAH people towards our goals of returning to and rebuilding Africa. Just from the messages, blogs and news stories I am reading in the social media, I sense a new awareness of purpose that is not so much about the emotional or even religious motivation we usually have, but a very practical and businesslike focus about what needs to be done, that so many Black people seem to be expressing right now.

The air of positive leads me to feel this is a time when UNITY is going to be achieved, when we all are going to come together without claiming membership of anything except the Conscious African Race, so we can avoid the divisions that usually cause conflict and join together in a powerful, serious, focused CAMPAIGN to step forward and rescue Africa. I know I am not alone in feeling this way. There is a very positive outlook, maybe it's just because Jamaica -- birthplace of Rastafari -- is celebrating its 50th year of official, legal separation from its former colonizer. But, even while that anniversary provides many opportunities for actions, that isn't the whole reason because my Friends on Facebook and Twitter express similar optimism from all corners of the African Diaspora.

I saw a picture on the internet of the rap singer 50Cent posing with huge bundles of money balanced on his arms and head. I saw a picture of a gold rocking horse Beyonce and JayZ bought for their new baby. We need to make our CAMPAIGN so powerful, serious and focused that Africans like these will support our objectives with their money. We need to make every African-American see re-settling in Africa with the same positive zeal as European and American Jews see Israel. They will only do that when our lives and what we are doing becomes more attractive and noticed than the superstars bling.

I just have a feeling that something MAJOR is about to happen that will be like a sign for us all to take note of and act. I don't know what it is. But, knowing that all rests in the hands of H.I.M. Emperor Haile Selassie I, the message will soon be clear. We must be ready to perform the tasks that are going to be necessary.

There was a rumour going round last year that the Mayan calendar said the world would end in 2012. This is what the Mayans said:

"Other people write about prophecy in the name of the Maya. They say that the world will end in December 2012. The Mayan elders are angry with this. The world will not end. It will be transformed. Humanity will continue, but in a different way. Material structures will change. From this we will have the opportunity to be more human. We are living in the most important era of the Mayan calendars and prophecies. All the prophecies of the world, all the traditions are converging now. There is no time for games. The spiritual ideal of this era is action."

AFRICA LAND GRAB

(from previous Issue)

"When they first came they told us an investor was coming and we would develop the land alongside one another,"Mr Garbaba told Channel 4 News. "They didn't say the land would be taken away from us entirely. I don't understand why the government took the land."

And at the family home his wife complains that the cattle have almost nowhere to graze because their old fields have gone.

"Since the land was taken away from us we are impoverished. Nothing has gone right for us, since these investors came," she added.

First, the International HQ should write a letter to all Heads of States, the AU, EU and UN expressing concern about the land grab for Africa which is rapidly pickling momentum.

Second, the International HQ should implement a radical drive to establish Local's in every African State from which pressure can continue to be brought to bear on Heads of African Governments to review their policies.

Third, the International HQ should produce our own Strategic Business and Action Plan to secure as much agricultural land as possible and develop it commercially.

Fourth, the International HQ should review its Public Relations image of the EWF Inc currently and take the necessary measures to ensure that it truly reflects a "We the Black Peoples of the World" image in accordance with the wishes of our august Emperor.

Fifth, the International HQ should take every necessary measure to resolve the current issues relating to the legal status of the HQ and,

Lastly, the International HQ should take every conceivable measure to have the HQ relocated to Addis Ababa.

For most people who are only familiar with King via the overplayed "I Have a Dream Speech," this may come as quite a shock. How could a man of peace who only wanted "this nation to rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed" become Public Enemy #1. However, in reality, King was a lot closer to the ideologies of "militants" such as Malcolm X and Kwame Ture (Stokley Carmichael), especially in his later years, than many people would like to admit

TRUTH Minista Paul Scott on FaceBook

"I said it before and I'll still taunt it. Every young brotha with a color is most wanted."

Amerikkka's Most Wanted- Ice Cube

He was considered by some the most dangerous man in America. He spent many nights locked up in jail cells. There were constant attempts made on his life. During his last years he was constantly harassed by law enforcement. The real reason for his untimely demise before the age of 40 still remains a mystery. I'm not talking about Grammy nominated rapper Russell "Ol' Dirty Bastard" Jones," I'm talking about Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr....

Recently, the website Gun.io posted FBI documents suggesting that ODB and the Wu Tang Clan were under surveillance for alleged, illegal activities. It must be noted that the late Dr. Martin Luther King was also under surveillance as documented in Kenneth O'Reilly's book "Black Americans: The FBI Files", proving that if you are an outspoken Black man in America, you don't have to be a criminal for the Feds to watch you.

Although many people today celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King as one of the greatest American heroes, that was not always the case. According to historian Taylor Branch in his book "Pillar of Fire," former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover referred to King as not only a "tom cat with obsessive degenerate sexual urges" but a "notorious liar" and "one of the

Nor do they know that, although he is portrayed as the great integrationist, King was as just a strong of an advocate of Black Pride as ODB was of "Knowledge of Self." In his work ""Where Do We Go from Here" King defines Black Power as "a psychological reaction to the psychological indoctrination that led to the creation of the perfect slave." Also, although some only associate Dr. King with songs like "We Shall Overcome," Dead Prez once sampled one of his "missing" speeches where he proclaimed , "Yes I'm Black..I'm proud of it...I'm Black and beautiful!"

This is the King that many hated; the one who dissed President Lyndon Johnson's war in Vietnam by saying that "we have been wrong from the beginning in Vietnam, we have been detrimental to the life of the Vietnamese people." (Which was just a nicer way of putting Muhammad Ali's statement that no Vietcong ever called him the N word. ) These are the types of voices that many in this country have always wanted silenced.

Ol' Dirty MLK: America's Most Wanted

lowest characters in the country;" in the Hip Hop vernacular " an ol' dirty bastard."

For most people who are only familiar with King via the overplayed "I Have a Dream Speech," this may come as quite a shock. How could a man of peace who only wanted "this nation to rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed" become Public Enemy #1. However, in reality, King was a lot closer to the ideologies of "militants" such as Malcolm X and Kwame Ture (Stokley Carmichael), especially in his later years, than many people would like to admit. This fact, however, has not been lost on Hip Hop, as even the most revolutionary rappers such as Public Enemy, Immortal Technique and Rakim have all paid homage to him in their songs.

The real Martin Luther King Jr is captured in the parts of his speeches and writings that have been whited-out of high school history books. Most people don't know that in his last speech, " I See the Promised Land," delivered in Memphis the night before he was assassinated, he called for a boycott of Coca Cola, Sealtest Milk and Wonder Bread and also asked that Black people transfer their money from white banks to a black one.

...Remember, in an All HipHop interview conducted shortly after his release from prison, ODB accused George Bush and the government of trying to kill him. While most people wrote this off as the paranoid ramblings of someone suffering from too many years of drug abuse , history makes us take another look. As they say in Greek mythology "those who the gods wish to destroy, they first drive mad."

It is no secret that the FBI bugged Dr. King's hotel rooms and ,allegedly, had tapes of him gettin' his freak on with women which they delivered to his wife in an effort to push him to commit suicide.

Also, according to Clay Risen in his book "A Nation on Fire," before his assassination in Memphis, " the 111th Military Intelligence Group had been keeping tabs on King and the SCLC for signs of an impending riot." Also Risen states that on the day of us murder, anti-riot operations were already put in place by the Army Operations Center "before his death was even confirmed."

Even Rev. Jesse Jackson wrote in the forward of Kings "alleged" assassin, James Earl Ray's book "Who Killed Martin Luther King, " "I have always believed that the government was part of a conspiracy, either directly or indirectly, to assassinate him."

So what is the connection between the ODBs, Tupac Shakurs and even the Soulja Slims of the world and MLK ? Every Black man with a microphone is a potential threat. Whether that threat is realized or not, they all had the potential to incite the youth to revolutionary action. After all, law enforcement has always paid an inordinate amount of attention to rappers. Recently, it was even reported that the DC police and the ATF set up a fake Hip Hop record label in Washington DC.

Wise men have always known the deep and pervading truth that it is better to give than to receive, for even as it conflicts with selfish and ambitious desires, it moderates and controls them. Giving always demands sacrifice. To overcome the temptaition of mere daily comfort and to press resolutely and patiently forward on the scheduled way are true tests of the high degree of determination that should bind you together. Any of you who may wish to profit himself alone from the knowledge given him, rather than serve others through the knowledge he has gained from learning, is betraying knowledge and rendering it worthless. A man’s happiness is to make his brother happy, and to serve his country. Thus it is possible to justify for knowledge its high and deserved place. For knowledge is power. If it is not applied properly to create, let there be no doubts, it will destroy. Education has value as it is established in individuals of good character with respect for God. We wish that your destiny shall be embraced in an education firmly based on good character before men and respect before God.” (Excerpt from a Christmas Greeting to Ethiopian Students abroad in England from The Emperor)

International banks tap Africa’s high growth

rates Bankers say the shift is driven by the stagnation of developed economies, writes Andrew England

ANDREW ENGLAND Published: 2012/01/04 07:49:38 AM

IN SPITE of the cloud hanging over western banks amid concerns about a double-dip recession and the euro-zone crisis, several international institutions have been increasing their presence in Africa to tap its fast growth rates.

In November, JPMorgan began offering rand clearing services in SA for the first time and it is preparing to apply for regulatory approval to open a local currency subsidiary in Nigeria. It will also establish representative offices in Kenya and Ghana early this year.

In line with the trend, Credit Suisse set up a wholly owned subsidiary in SA last January — its first stand-alone presence on the continent — after a joint venture with Standard Bank was wound up, enabling the Swiss group to focus on establishing a broader investment banking business to serve the continent.

Barclays has also shifted its Africa headquarters from Dubai to Johannesburg and named Maria Ramos, CEO of Absa Group, its South African subsidiary, as head of Barclays Africa. The UK-based bank paid £2,9bn for a 56% stake in Absa in 2005 but it had been criticised for not putting enough focus on the continent.

However, Barclays CEO Bob Diamond is counted among Africa’s latest cheerleaders.

And it is not just western banks boosting their positions in Africa. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China opened its first representative office in Africa in Cape Town in November. It paid $5,5bn for a 20% stake in Standard Bank in 2007.

The shift, bankers say, is driven by the stagnation of developed economies, coupled with the potential of a resource-rich, but underdeveloped continent with 1-billion people.

The International Monetary Fund forecast sub-Saharan Africa’s economy would grow 5,2%

last year and 5,8% this year. At the same time, some of the governance and stability issues that have previously blighted Africa have been improving.

John Coulter, JPMorgan’s senior country officer for sub-Saharan Africa, says: "Better governance and macroeconomic policies, with greater political stability in a number of African

From Caribbean Fever: Internationally acclaimed Reggae superstar, Queen Ifrica and Tony Rebel are letting their feelings known regarding the recent announcement by Jamaican Prime Minister, The Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller.

Both artistes were headliners on the 19th staging of Rebel Salute at the Kaiser Sports Club in St. Elizabeth this past weekend. The annual concert, hosted by Tony Rebel, took place on the Reggae artiste's 50th birthday; producing a strong lineup card that included Romain Virgo, Capleton and several others.

Queen Ifrica, who recently revealed that she's pregnant with her third child, gained strong favour with patrons by performing several of her hit singles, including Below The Waist where she pointed to her growing belly in glee. However, she got the loudest applause from fans when she called out Jamaica's Prime Minister, Portia Simpson-Miller regarding her announcement that she'd look into tweaking the buggery law that's been in place for several years. The law, which refers to the dispelling of particular sexual acts amongst heterosexuals and homosexuals, has been a strong topic of contention for several months.

During Ifrica's performance, she warned that, "I would like to send a message to those who want to change the laws of nature. No buggery law nah repeal a Jamaica." She then performed the thought-provoking song, Keep It Yourself as a means to re-emphasize her stance.

Ethiopia forcing thousands off land-US rights group Tue Jan 17, 2012 5:00am GMT

* Group says resettled people left hungry * Addis has leased area size of Belgium to foreigners * Government says HRW wrong in alleging programme problematic By Aaron Maasho ADDIS ABABA, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Ethiopia is forcing tens of thousands of people off their land so it can lease it to foreign investors, leaving former landowners destitute and in some cases starving, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Tuesday.

The Horn of Africa state has already leased 3 million hectares - an area just smaller than Belgium - to foreign farm businesses and the U.S.-based rights group said that Addis Ababa had plans to lease another 2.1 million hectares.

The United Nations has increasingly voiced concern that countries such as China and Gulf Arab states are buying swathes of land in Africa and Asia to secure their own food supplies, often at the expense of local people.

HRW said that 1.5 million Ethiopians would eventually be forced from their land and highlighted what it said was the latest case of forced relocation in its report "Ethiopia: Forced Relocations Bring Hunger, Hardship".

"The Ethiopian government under its "villagisation" programme is forcibly relocating approximately 70,000 indigenous people from the western Gambella region to new villages that lack adequate food, farmland, healthcare, and educational facilities," HRW said, adding it had interviewed more than 100 people for the report.

News Updates – Ethiopia : More news on the Land Grab

The Horn of Africa state has already leased 3 million hectares - an area just smaller than Belgium - to foreign farm businesses and the U.S.-based rights group said that Addis Ababa had plans to lease another 2.1 million hectares.

Canada urged to stop

Ethiopia from evicting

villagers

The forced expulsions have cut villagers off from food sources, basic health services while forcing them to endure abuse from the Ethiopian army, the report alleges.

A rights' watchdog is urging Canada and fellow aid donors to pressure Ethiopia into ending an abusive and systematic practice of forcing rural villagers off their land. New York-based Human Rights Watch blasts the Horn of Africa country for its "villagization" program that it says has forcibly relocated 70,000 indigenous people, and aims to move 1.5 million by next year.

The forced expulsions have cut villagers off from food sources, basic health services while forcing them to endure abuse from the Ethiopian army, the report alleges.

An Ottawa-based researcher and author interviewed more than 100 Ethiopians during a clandestine investigation last year that accuses their country's leaders of sacrificing its own tribes to broader foreign corporate interests. Researcher Felix Horne says the situation violates Canada's own Official Development Assistance Accountability Act, which says all aid spending must meet international human-rights standards.

Canada gives Ethiopia about $170M annually

Ethiopia is the third-largest recipient of foreign aid from Canada, at about $170 million a year.

Horne told The Canadian Press he had off-the-record discussions with officials at the Canadian International Development Agency, or CIDA, about his findings, but got little meaningful response.

Ethiopia is forcing locals off their land, so they can offer up millions of hectares of fertile farmland to foreign companies from countries such as China, India and Saudi Arabia for large-scale farm factories, said Horne.

From the Constitution and By-Laws of The Ethiopian World Federation Incorporated:

(Article X Section (c). Death: The Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated, shall establish a burial fund; each member of the Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated, in order to obtain the benefits of this burial fund shall have subscribed to the fund for at least one (1) year and shall be in good financial standing in the organization. The subscription to the burial fund shall be $.25 per month. Any member who fails to subscribe to the burial fund for three months shall be unfinancial in this fund and shall not be entitled to the benefits of this fund. Any member who is unfinancial in the Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated, shall be classified as unfinancial in the burial fund. The Financial Secretary of the local shall collect from each member monthly the subscription to the burial fund.

How many times have members of our community (sometimes even well-known celebrities) passed away and there is a financial stress to come up with expenses for the funeral? How well are our own families prepared for an unexpected demise of any of our family members? The $100 death benefit provided for by our Constitution is by no means practical in this new millennium, and has not been practical for more than half a century. The updated figures proposed by the International President and the Local One Women’s Auxiliary in the table below address that problem. The Constitution & ByLaws emphasizes the fund being administered by the Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated (meaning Headquarters), with the collection of the premiums being the responsibility of the Locals. With the advance in technology since 1937, we also need to examine electronic/internet methods of collection of dues and funds – especially since members often move away from their original Locals. Our members should not be deprived of any benefit promised by His Imperial Majesty when he charted the Constitution and By-Laws. Locals are required to put the Burial Fund in place and remit installment payments with their Monthly Reports. The updated Burial Fund may attract others in the community to become members of our organization as so many do not have any insurance. In the future, the success of the Fund will form the basis for the development and implementation of other beneficial programs, eg. a members Credit Union, Bank, Housing Trust, etc. and provide employment for our members. All steps will have to be taken to provide transparency and good stewardship.

Dr. King continues to be one of misrepresented figures in the 20th century. His more than 12 years of political work has been systematically reduced to a "dream" and carefully-chosen sound bites by the mainstream media, writers, and historians. Thus, the general public knows almost nothing about the 2nd major phase of Dr. King's political career, which began in 1966 when he embraced human rights, black power, and a program to eliminate poverty in America. Historian Prof. Manu Ampim will present the primary sources to examine the political legacy and modern distortions of Dr. King's work.

Origin of AIDS: The Polio Vaccine? (CBC 'Witness', 2004) http://youtu.be/LZs1V8mpcoY

On April 12, 1955 Jonas Salk's polio vaccine was first licensed for public use in the U.S. In the years afterwards 90 million Americans were vaccinated in the largest mass vaccination campaign ever. Polio virtually disappeared from the continent and Jonas Salk became a hero. But not long after, 260 children who were vaccinated with Salk's vaccine became sick. Eleven of them died. An investigation showed that some lots of the vaccine were defective and confidence in it was shaken. Two scientific greats, Dr. Hilary Koprowski, director of the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, and Dr. Albert Sabin, a physician at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital, raced to replace the Salk vaccine. Dr. Cecil Fox, a pathologist at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases remembers that it was an intense competition. Both Sabin and Koprowski's vaccines were derived from monkey organs. They needed to test them in large, non-immunized population groups, no longer available in North America. Sabin traveled to the U.S.S.R. and vaccinated more than 6 million people in Latvia, Estonia and Kazakhstan between 1958 and 1959. No AIDS cases emerged in the U.S.S.R. where Sabin did his testing. Koprowski moved his study to the Belgian Congo which had one of Africa's more modern health care infrastructures at the time. Between 1956 and 1960 more then 1 million African people were 'encouraged' to receive Koprowski's vaccine called CHAT. Sabin analyzed Koprowski's vaccine in 1958 and found it be be 'unstable and contaminated by an unknown virus'. He told Koprowski about his discovery and went then went public with his findings.

This is great wisdom, not to be hasty in action, or stubborn in our own opinions. A part of this wisdom also is not to believe every word we hear, nor to tell others all that we hear, even though we believe it. Take counsel with a man who is wise and of a good conscience; and seek to be instructed by one better than thyself, rather than to follow thine own inventions. A good life maketh a man wise toward God, and giveth him experience in many things. The more humble a man is in himself, and the more obedient towards God, the wiser will he be in all things, and the more shall his soul be at peace. The Imitation of Christ,

VITAL AFRICAN UNION-UN PARTNERSHIP CAN BE STRENGTHENED FURTHER, SECURITY COUNCIL TOLD

New York, Jan 12 2012 2:10PM

The collective efforts by the United Nations and the African Union in peace and security matters are having an important impact on the continent, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the Security Council today, while stressing the need to further strengthen this vital partnership.

“The African Union is a vital strategic partner to the United Nations,” Mr. Ban said in "http://.un.org/apps/news/infocus/sgspeeches/statments_full.asp?statID=1425" remarks to a meeting on the UN-AU partnership in peace and security, chaired by President Jacob Zuma of South Africa, which holds the Council’s rotating presidency for this month.

“Over the last decade, the AU and sub-regional organizations have significantly bolstered their own role in building an architecture for peace and security on the African continent,” noted Mr. Ban.

“Together, our collective efforts in conflict prevention and mediation, peacekeeping and peacebuilding are making a real difference throughout the continent,” he stated. “Of course, there is more room for improvement.”

Some examples of cooperation between the UN and the AU include the joint peacekeeping operation in Darfur (UNAMID), combined efforts to combat the threat posed by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and UN support to the AU peacekeeping force in Somalia (AMISOM).

Mr. Ban said that it is only natural that there will be differences in dealing with complex and fast moving crises.

“Organizations with different mandates, membership, and perspectives will occasionally have differences in approach,” he said. “The question is how we manage those differences – how we work together.”

The UN has strengthened the partnership with the AU in several concrete ways over the past few years, noted Mr. Ban, whose recent report on the subject focuses on building on successes, improving coherence, and harmonizing decision-making from a firm foundation of shared values and principles.

“We must build on what we have achieved to devise and strengthen practical tools so that we can successfully face our common peace and security challenges in Africa together,” he wrote in the report.

Mr. Ban told the Council that the UN-AU partnership can be enhanced further in a number of ways, including by learning new lessons and developing new tools, as well as by intensifying the engagement with civil society and women’s groups active in mediation and conflict prevention, particularly at the local level.

“As we look ahead, we will need to ensure flexibility so that each new situation is addressed on its own merits. We must also promote innovative arrangements in complex situations that may require joint actions, operations, or enhanced partnerships,” he stated.

“As we do so, let us strive to maximize our collective efforts and limited resources, and ensure that each partnership arrangement has a clearly-defined division of labour and roles and responsibilities for each organization,” added the Secretary-General, who will attend the AU Summit later this month.

The meeting heard from numerous delegations, as well as Ramtane Lamamra, AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, who noted that a more strategic relationship between the UN and the AU is made more compelling by the fact that Africa, despite the significant progress made in recent years, still accounts for the highest number of conflicts worldwide.

In addition to the traditional threats, the continent is now facing a new set of threats, including terrorism, maritime piracy, border disputes and climate change, he added.

“Clearly, these challenges require concerted responses by the African Union and the United Nations and a much closer partnership,” stated Mr. Lamamra, who suggested that the two organizations agree on a set of principles aimed at clarifying their relationship and “anchoring it on a more solid platform.”

"Canada is a huge donor to Ethiopia so they have an obligation to ensure that Ethiopia is not doing these sorts of things," he said.

Ethiopia has a democratically elected government, but Prime Minister Meles Zenawi exerts totalitarian control over the country. He was one of several African leaders that Prime Minister Stephen Harper hosted in a outreach session of the 2010 G8 summit in Muskoka.

Still, Ethiopia is one of CIDA's two-dozen "focus" countries and it is among the poor countries that receives funding related to the Harper government's signature child and maternal health initiative.

Canada also assists Ethiopia with food security and agricultural programs.

"The fact of the matter is people are absolutely starving," said Horne. "The villagization program is lessening food security in the region."

Zenawi's government is trying to improve access to schools, clinics and other services by moving rural farmers to more controlled villages.

The four regions of Ethiopia where this is happening are the four regions where there is extensive land investment for foreign companies, said Horne.

The report says the first round of forced relocations saw people moved to areas with dry, poor soil. Seed, fertilizer and temporary food assistance was not forthcoming from the government, causing hunger and starvation, the report says.

Villagers who refuse to leave beaten by soldiers

Horne's interview subjects told him they built new huts in their new villages under careful military supervision. Sometimes the army had to resort to beatings and other coercion to force villagers to comply.

One villager quoted in the report said soldiers beat his father with the butt of their guns when he refused to leave his land.

"He said, 'I was born here — my children were born here — I am too old to move so I will stay,"' the report says.

Jan Egeland, a senior director at Human Rights Watch, said donor money is being used "directly or indirectly, to fund the villagization program."

Donors have a responsibility to ensure that their donations are not being used for that purpose, added Egeland, the Norwegian-born diplomat, who became a high-profile United Nations humanitarian rights undersecretary.

"The villagization program is being undertaken in the exact same areas of Ethiopia that the government is leasing to foreign investors for large-scale commercial agricultural operations," Egeland said in a statement. "This raises suspicions about the underlying motives of the villagization program."

A spokesman for Canada's International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

One year ago, Oda's department announced a project to enhance agricultural development in Ethiopia.

"Canada is proud to be working with the World Bank and other donors to support Ethiopia's Agricultural Growth Program. Well-targeted investments in areas such as rural infrastructure and stronger linkages to markets can help to transform subsistence farmers into commercial producers," Deepak Obhrai, Oda's parliamentary secretary, said in a Jan. 28, 2011, statement.

Obhrai was announcing a five-year CIDA funding commitment of nearly $19 million toward an agricultural growth program for small farmers in 83 Ethiopian districts.

countries, have contributed to a significant improvement in the overall economic performance of the continent. As a consequence, Africa is being taken more seriously as an investment and business destination."

It is likely to take two years for JPMorgan’s bank subsidiary to be operational in Nigeria, the continent’s most populous nation, with Africa seen as a long-term play for the group. Mr Coulter makes the comparison between Brazil and Africa, saying the latter is on a similar trajectory to the Latin American nation five or six years ago. He says by opening local currency branches and representative offices, JPMorgan hopes to build a foundation to position itself for greater investment banking business.

"The opportunity we see in Africa is really to build out our commercial banking business to deliver treasury and corporate banking services to our clients across Africa, at the same time opening up the way for investment banking opportunities. "If we invest now, then we will reap the upturn in Africa, whether it’s in five years, 10 years or 20 years. But we recognise that we need to make that investment now," he says.

JPMorgan estimates that at least 35 of its top 100 global clients are operating in Africa. For Credit Suisse, a key reason for increasing its Africa presence is to bolster its emerging markets coverage as trade patterns shift.

Leo Reif, head of the investment banking department at Credit Suisse SA, says: "The dialogue these days with clients is about emerging markets to an increasing extent and they talk about Asia and then they want to talk about Africa. If you can’t talk about Africa, then they’ll find another bank."

Credit Suisse has already advised on several deals, including HSBC’s bid for Nedbank , which ultimately fell through, and the $326m takeover of SA’s Defy Appliances by Arcelik Group, a Turkish company. It has also been involved in initial public offerings in SA and Tanzania. Mr Reif says the tough environment the bank is enduring in Europe is not affecting its plans in Africa.

Standard Chartered, one of the more established international operators in Africa, is another expanding on the continent. In 2010 it bought Barclays’ Africa custody business — before Mr Diamond took over at the bank. It also put in a failed bid for Nedbank. Diana Layfield, Standard Chartered’s Africa CEO, says there has not been enough international recognition of the "real economic benefits" of Chinese engagement in Africa.

"The increasing role in Africa of other Asian investors like India and Korea has also been neglected," she says. "Africa is no longer seen as a relative underperformer on the world stage. Investors believe in China and India’s growth; they believe in what this means for demand in commodities, and China’s and increasingly India’s need for what Africa produces."

Many of us hold dear to our hearts the spirit and love of His Imperial Majesty; we call His name and respect His Institutions. This year, 2012, is the year when we should pledge to give or do something towards achieving His expectations for us. The Ethiopian World Federation, Inc. is the only membership organization designed by His Majesty – for individuals to work together on a grassroots level to protect and save our African family from annihilation. Remember: Whatever you do for any of His children, you do for our Lord.

To Our American Family: This is the time of year when you can make a financial difference to a charitable organization and improve the bottom line on your tax return. As a member of this organization or an advocate for the rights and progress of the Black peoples of the world, and humanity in general, you can still claim a tax deduction for 2011 by making a donation to the Ethiopian World Federation, Inc. or your favorite charity. It’s a win win situation. Instead of giving that extra $20, $200 tor $2,000 to Uncle Sam, consider making a financial commitment to your beloved, but financially strapped organization.
