•1979 European Parliament set up at Strasbourg. EEC becomes the EC ( ‘economic’ conveniently dropped from the title).

•1992 The Maastricht Treaty, renamed ‘European Union’, signed by Foreign and finance ministers, binding the 12 nations to economic and monetary union, common currency.
