The Best Junk In Town!

Both the United Church of Christ (UCC) and the Chris-tian Church

(Disciples of Christ) (DOC) have designations that con-gregations can qualify for. These designations help com-municate who they are – both to themselves and to the wider community. One such UCC designation is being a “Just Peace Church.”

Our Pathways to Beloved Community group has spent over one year exploring whether or not we are a “Just Peace Church,” as defined by the UCC. They have con-cluded that we are and have drafted a “Just Peace Church Covenant,” recommending the church adopt it by congregational vote. You can read the draft covenant on page 3.

The Cabinet (our congregation’s leadership board) re-viewed the draft covenant, made a few suggestions for edits, and endorsed the spirit of the covenant at their

July meeting. They also scheduled a Town Hall Meeting on Sunday, August 11, in the sanctuary, following wor-ship. The purpose of the Town Hall Meeting is to allow the congregation to ask questions and to voice concerns and support prior to the meeting when the actual vote takes place. It is hoped that this more informal discus-sion format will encourage people to share their opin-ions. Joy Barnitz, chair of the Pathways to Beloved Com-munity group, said, “People will learn how this UCC des-ignation fits who we are and where we are going as a congregation, living our commitment to progressive Christianity in a divid-ed world.”

The vote on the cove-nant will happen dur-ing a Special Congre-gational Meeting on Sunday, September 15.

Most months I try to write a column on one theme. This month, you get a hodgepodge of thoughts, making this column truly live up to its name, “Jeff’s Jottings.”

My Travels

By the time you read this, I will have returned from the Disciples of Christ’s General Assembly. I’m writing this before I leave because of press deadlines. I’ll have a round-up of both the General Assembly and the United Church of Christ’s General Synod, which I attended in June, in this space in the September edition of The Bell. Also, for the record, I’ll be taking three weeks of vacation this month.

August’s Documentary

I am proud of our Second Saturday Documentary Series. Each movie we screen brings an important issue of our shared life to light. Sometimes we select a film with a strong spiritual dimension. This is true of this month’s film, Risking Light, a film about the transformational power of forgiveness. I urge you to attend the screening on August 10, at 1:30 p.m., in the sanctuary. You can read more about the film on page 8.

Upcoming Worship Services

If you read page 1 thoroughly, you noticed that August 11 is “Mobile Pantry Sunday.” There are several

things I’d like you to bring with you that day:

• First, please bring an open mind. The order of worship will be different from what you are used to.

• Second, please bring any school supplies you’re donating to the August Special offering (see page 8). Children and teachers in our congregation are encouraged to bring their personal school supplies, too (see page 5).

• Third, please bring some non-perishable food for the Tri-City Volunteers food bank.

Hold on to all these things as worship begins. We’ll bring the school supplies and food forward at different times during the service.

The worship service on August 25 will be very simple, since most of you will be working on the Flea Market.

In September, we will be marking a Season of Creation. See page 5 to learn about how your photography can be part of our worship during those weeks.

Housing Navigation Center

It now seems pretty certain that the City of Fremont’s new Housing Navigation Center won’t be on our property. The City is now considering two properties and opposition to both is being organized. The people whose lives can be changed by a Housing

Navigation Center need us to speak up. One way you can help do this is by signing this petition, endorsed by the Cabinet, at https://www.greenbelt.org/blog/support-the-homeless-navigation-center-in-fremont/.

We have learned that Housing Navigation Centers are effective programs for moving people from homelessness to stable housing. This is especially true when the program participants have more than 30 days in the program (the situation with many of the beds in San Francisco's Navigation Centers). Having up to six months in the program with an additional six months of supportive services after being housed is a formula proving to have impressive results. And a formula that saves the tax payers lots of money.

Flea Market

The Flea Market is our annual, all-hands-on-deck fundraiser. Your help is needed to make it successful. Here’s how you can help:

• Donate your no-longer-needed treasures. Bring them on Sundays or on other days when people are in the building. Look for the designated donation drop-off spot in the fellowship hall. Do not leave donations outside.

• Sign up to help price, display and sell items in the weeks leading up to the big weekend.

The following is a draft of the Just Peace Covenant that will be discussed at the Town Hall Meeting on August 11. See story on page 1.

As members and friends of Niles Discov-ery Church, we commit ourselves to be-ing a Just Peace Church in partnership with The United Church of Christ and the World Council of Churches. We commit ourselves to creating peace with justice through our relationships with local, regional, national and international com-munities. We commit ourselves to cre-ating just peace relationships with God’s creation.

Our just peace work will be guided by examples of peace with justice found in the scriptures, as well as the stories of injustice, violence, and silenced voices in scripture. Through the words and stories of Jesus, we will be encouraged and brave in our just peace work. The scrip-tures emphasizing all people are created in God’s image, all people are our family, loving neighbors as ourselves, and the Jubilee year will drive our just peace commitment and activities. We will strive to be allies with people impacted by intentional and unconscious bias, whether it is racism, patriarchy, homo-phobia, anti-Semitism, islamophobia, able-ism, ageism, classism, nationalism, etc.

We will strengthen our faith, under-standing, compassion, and just peace work through truth telling and listening

with individuals and groups, through conversations, seminars, reading, ser-mons, vigils, celebrations, charitable work, and actions of solidarity designed for systemic change. We will create space for those experiencing injustice to be understood and to define their reality and needs. We will be guided by the

words and work of great peacemakers such as Martin

Luther King. Jr., Dorothy Day, and Archbishop Desmond Tu-tu, and the myriad of contem-porary prophets working to-

gether to create a peaceful world of jus-tice for all of creation.

We commit ourselves to continue on our path of being good stewards of the earth. We will work to protect creation from climate change and other threats to the planet that endanger a balance of all aspects of creation: the earth, the wa-ters, and all living things.

We commit ourselves to work for peace with justice in our ministries and our per-sonal lives. We will continue to uphold our covenant of radical welcome of all people no matter where they are on their life’s journey, our many ways of embodying the United Church of Christ’s “3 Great Loves,” our Green Chalice standing in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and our Open and Affirming standing in both denomina-tions.

We affirm that these commitments re-flect and support Niles Discovery Church’s ongoing covenant as a Just Peace church.

Let The PPRC Know

The Pastor Parish Relations Committee (PPRC) wants to hear from you. Contact any PPRC member – Judy Molander, Ken Rasler, Cindy Sojourner, Ingert Svaert, John Zlatnik, Pastor Jeff Spencer and Pastor Brenda Loreman – if you have a concern about the life of the church that you want to explore. If you have a church relationship that’s hurting and want some assistance in healing it, speak to one of them.

Another Month, Another We Are

One Rally

The “We Are One” rallies, held on the fourth Thurs-day of the month, 5:00-6:00 p.m., at the corner of Paseo Padre and Wal-nut in Fremont, have re-turned. The theme for the August 22 rally hasn’t been announced by the press deadline for this edition of The Bell, but it will be included in Sun-day announcements once it is set. The “We Are One” rallies are spon-sored by the Tri-City In-terfaith Council, of which Niles Discovery Church is an affiliate.

Can You Help?

Don’t you just love the snacks we have after church each Sunday. Does the social time with our church family bright-en your day? Does it help kick the next week off with a positive push? During the summer our cupboards can get a bit bare; so, if you answered yes to any of the previous questions, please take a moment to review the sign-up sheet near the snack table. If possible, sign-up to bring an item for an upcoming week. Your contribution will be received with open arms (and mouths). And many thanks to all who have brought cheese, baked goods, fruit, candy, etc. to share with everyone.

The church office received word that Will Malone died from suicide on June 12. A memorial service was held in Oregon.

We also received word that Peg Tait, a long-time member of Niles Congregational Church, died sometime in the night of June 26 to 27. A service celebrating her

life was held last month at United Church of Christ Fremont.

Bill Ball died on July 13. Plans for a memorial service have not been made by the press deadline.

The sign-up sheet is on the window in the fellowship hall next to the hallway door nearest the kitchen. Alta Jo Adamson will make sure you have a way to get in if you don’t have a key.

• Sign up to work the big weekend. All of Niles will turn into a giant garage sale the weekend of August 24 through 25. We need as many people as possible working that weekend. Watch for your opportunity to sign up.

See page 1 for more information about the Flea Market.

Peace, Pastor Jeff

Name It!

Please remember, for cash donations to be credited to your giving record, you must put the cash in an envelope and write your name on it.

We are reaching out to you, with gloved hands, to ask you to please refrain from flushing wearable hygiene garments. Our toilets, as great a flusher as you can find, cannot handle disposable sanitary items including baby diapers, Depends, etc.

The Ministry of Property is investigating appropriate receptacles that can be

located inside the bathroom stalls. We are also acquiring reminder placards to add to each bathroom stall.

It costs the church several hundreds of dollars to clear a plugged toilet. The good news was that the recent blockage was confined to one toilet (see photo at right). If the blockage had gone a little further, all the toilets would have been affected.

Thank you for your time and attention to this request.

For many years, we have had a special offering of school supplies, and we have prayed over them, asking God to bless the supplies, the children who will use them, and their teachers. But we have left our own kids and teachers out of the blessing. That is going to change this year.

On August 11, we will bless the school supplies we have collected for the Family Resource Center. Kids and teachers in our congregation are welcome to bring their personal school supplies to be blessed too. Learn more about the special offering on page 8.

Your Photos Could Augment The Season Of Creation

During the month of September, we will be celebrating the Season of Creation. Your photographs could augment our worship.

If you have wonderful pictures of God’s creation you would like to share for possible use, there are two ways to do so. Electronic pictures (jpgs, etc.) can be emailed (in as high a resolution as you can) to Pastor Jeff at [email protected]. If you have prints that are at least 8x10 that are already mounted and framed that you would like to loan, make sure your name is on the back and bring them to the church office (look for the box labeled “Creation Photos” so they don’t end up in the flea market) or give them to Joy Barnitz.

though the big Flea Market sale dates aren’t until August 24 and 25. We rely on your donations arriving EARLY so that members of the church can shop and buy. Our doors opened for your precious donations on Wednesday, July 24. This year it is especially important to bring things early because we have a shorter selling time than usual. The flea market team appreciates your donations. However, please be sure your donation is clean, usable, and not torn, stained, broken, chipped, dirty, or unpolished. You may bring things to church on Sundays, weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., whenever office staff is in the church, or call Alta Jo Adamson, (510) 713-1333, and she will ar-

range to open the church.

Would you like to help unpack and price merchandise? Can you haul items to the church? We need volunteers every day in August, to help us make this a blessed event. On weekdays, volunteers are needed to hang around and sell, sell, sell. If you are interested in helping, please contact Carrie Williams ([email protected]) or Jim Thomas ([email protected]).

When it is time for the official Flea Market weekend, we will be staffed by church volunteers in two-hour increments throughout the day. These hours are especially important to fill. Generally speaking, everyone rolls up their sleeves, pitches in, and it is loads of fun! Hope to see you this summer.

Photographers Wanted

Do you have a camera and enjoy taking pictures? All you need to do is snap the pics and email them to [email protected].

Activity At The Parsonage by Bill Palleschi for the Ministry of Property Team

The Ministry of Property Team (MOPs) wanted to let the congregation know about the happenings at the parsonage. While the minister was away the MOPs played. Ha ha! Or Ah ha!

A lot of overdue maintenance was implemented. Carpets were cleaned. The master bathroom was painted, and a new medicine cabinet and LED light fixtures were installed (see pictures). Much-needed repairs to fence posts were complet-ed. We shared the fence expense with three neighbors. Leaves and mulch were removed from the roof gutters, and the exterior of the building got washed.

One task still to be done is installing a new air return grill and filter in the living room; the grill is on order at Dale Hard-ware.

The MOPs have Mark Twist to thank for performing the reno-vation to the master bath and John Hollowell for tweaking the garage door rendering it fully operational, thereby saving the congregation a considerable amount of money. Thanks also to John Smith for finding us an outstanding general con-tractor whom the MOPs fully endorse. If you have a home problem and need a contractor or need carpets cleaned, ask us and we will give you contact information.

Pretty As A Picture

From time to time, mem-bers of the church take pictures during various church events. And sometimes those pictures are posted on our Face-book page. But you may not want your picture used, so you should know about our church’s policy on using pictures. If you don’t want your picture used online, you can opt out. Just go to http://j.mp/ndcdnp, print and fill out the form, and send it the church office – or you can call the church office to have a form mailed to you.

For many kids who come from families struggling with poverty, getting a new backpack and school supplies is a luxury beyond their reach. However, these tools can make all the difference in the world to their future success. How can a child be expected to excel in the classroom without the basic tools to learn? Studies show that when kids have new supplies of their own, their grades, classroom behavior, and engagement all improve. Their self-esteem increases. And, most importantly, their atti-tude towards school and learning improves.

In 2018 the United Church of Christ adopted the follow-ing Mission statement: “United in God’s spirit and in-spired by God’s grace, we can love all, and seek justice for all: for the children, for our neighbors and for crea-tion.”

It’s time to put God’s love to work by sharing. Please help us give students the start they need to the school year with a new backpack and supplies. The Ministry for Christian Education has been collecting backpacks and

school supplies since the beginning of July to donate to the Fremont Family Resource Cen-ter, which serves the Tri-City area. They will

continue to receive those donations until Au-gust 11.

We will be officially receiving cash donations for this effort on Sunday, August 11. As with all our

special offerings, you are welcome to give at any time (always make checks payable to Niles Discovery Church.) You can also give online: go to our church webpage at http://nilesdiscoverychurch.org/ and click the “donate” button at the top of the page.

Niles Discovery Church receives a special offering each month. With so many possibilities for special giving, you may need to choose which ones are most important to you. You can see the complete schedule of offerings at http://bit.ly/2019specialoffering.

Thanks to your generosity, our July Special Offering for the Pastors’ Discretionary Fund raised a total of $1,828.50.

Special Offerings

Second Saturday Documentary Series

Documentary Explores Uplifting Stories Of Resilience And

The Difficult Work Of Forgiving The Unforgivable.

A mother grieves a murdered son in Minneapolis. A Cambodian youth is forced into slave labor. An Australian toddler is torn from her loving family in the name of gov-ernment-sanctioned genocide. These were the events that plunged Mary Johnson, Kilong Ung, and Debra Hocking into a world filled with unimaginable trauma and loss. Yet each one not only survived but thrived. How did their journey through grief bring them to profound compassion? How did they find it in their hearts to forgive the unforgivable?

Risking Light is a thought-provoking documentary that dares to ask, “What would the world be like if we all for-gave one another?” The public is invited to a free screening of the film at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, at Niles Discovery Church, 36600 Niles Blvd., Fremont. A discussion will follow the screening.

Produced, written, and directed by Emmy-award winner Dawn Mikkelson, Risking Light takes and international, multi-cultural look at how people cope with the tragedy of the past and move forward to create fulfilling lives. The ability to forgive, but not forget, forges powerful bonds, emotional healing and community action that ex-tends beyond the personal to universal truths that benefit us all.

The Second Saturday Documentary Series is co-sponsored by Niles Community Church and the San Jose Peace and Justice Center. Learn more about the series at http://bit.ly/nilesssds.

The Lap Robe Tying Group meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month, January through October, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. However, this month, due

to the Flea Market, the fellowship hall will not be available. Vickey Kean has generously offered her house, 35784 Linda Drive, for our August meeting. Please let Judy Molander know if you plan to attend as lunch is provided. You can also let Judy know if you or someone you care about might benefit from receiving one of these lap robes that have all kinds of love tied into them.

Weekly Bible Study Pastor Jeff’s Monday morning Bible study will take a hiatus in August while he is on vacation. The group will only meet on Monday, August 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and resume on September 9. The scripture studied is typically the scripture for the coming Sunday’s worship service. Starting in Septem-

ber, the meetings will be much more regular. You might want to make it a habit to join them in Room 3 (or the fellow-ship hall on the third Monday of the month). Everyone is welcome.
