HistoryBaskerville was designed in 1757 by John Baskerville,

in Birmingham, England. It was created at the end of

18th century whereas in the 18th century, Garamond

and Bembo are more dominant at that time. Baskerville was

inspired from Caslon Old Style by increasing the contrast

between thick and thin line Baskerville was known as

Transitional typeface because of the middle transformation

between Old typeface and Modern typeface.

Baskerville’s typeface was an important inspiration for Bodoni

and Didot, who pushed their designs toward even greater

contrast and geometric refinement. The harmony and beauty

of Baskerville make it use in many books and magazines

because its elegance and refinement make it an excellent

typeface to convey dignity and tradition.

John Baskerville, he was an English business

man but he is remembered as printer and typographer.

He was a printer and papermaker. He first established

his printing press in Birmingham, England

in 18th in 1750. He invented a technology to prevent his

shiny ink from spreading from the actual imprint of the

page.He crafted his own very smooth paper and pressed

his sheets between copper plates. He was known as

Baskerville is widely used as

display and body texts. Many

magazines and books are still using

it as either body texts or display. It

was first printed in Virgil, the Bible

by Cambridge University Press

and became inspiration for Fournier,

Giambattista Bodoni and Didot.

As time goes by, Baskerville was

catogorised as old typeface and

being revived by many type

foundries. The most well known was

Deberny&Peignot, Monotype and

Linotype company. Now it is widely

used at most of the documents of

University of Birmingham and

some other companies as logo type.
