FROM THE PASTOR JAN. 5, 2014

EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Today we celebrate the Magi who come from the east to wor-

ship the newborn King of Israel. Imagine their surprise when

they find the Child Jesus, messiah and king born in a stable.

Our Savior was born as a humble, shepherd king. Nonetheless,

these wise men bring Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and

myrrh. Gold signified a gift worthy of a king, myrrh signified

his mortality and frankincense his divinity. Let us offer Jesus

the gold of our love, the myrrh of our mortality and incense of

our worship. In many parts of the world, especially in the east, gifts are exchanged on the Epiphany, tradition-

ally the 12th day of Christmas, in order to commemorate the gifts presented by the Magi. Perhaps we could

present Jesus with the gift of our time in praying at the Adoration Chapel, volunteering service in the commu-

nity, reconciling with enemies, ministering in the Church or the like. St. Paul said to the Ephesians 3:6 in to-

day’s second reading, “In Christ Jesus the Gentiles are now co-heirs with the Jews, members of the same body

and sharers of the promise through the preaching of the gospel.” As Jesus manifests love and blessing for the

entire world at the Epiphany, may we bless others in return with our own gifts of peace.

Rejoice! Jesus is born and made manifest in Bethlehem to the shepherds and the Magi. Come let us adore

Him!

FINANCIAL REPORTS

Please wait until the end of the month for the 2013 financial statements. It takes awhile to reconcile all the re-

ports and make them available to you, but our staff is working hard to get that out as soon as possible. Thank

you for your generous, financial support to the parish throughout 2013.

dates and time their child is scheduled to serve. Thank you for your commitment to making our liturgies rev-

A Few Words from Bl. Pope John Paul II Regarding Epiphany...A Few Words from Bl. Pope John Paul II Regarding Epiphany...A Few Words from Bl. Pope John Paul II Regarding Epiphany...A Few Words from Bl. Pope John Paul II Regarding Epiphany... “Who does not feel the need for a ‘star’ to guide him on his earthly journey? Individuals and nations both feel the need. To satisfy the universal yearning for salvation, the Lord himself chose a people to be the guiding star for ‘all the families of the earth’ (Genesis 12:3). With the Incarnation of his Son, God then expanded his choice to every people, no matter what their race or culture. Thus the Church came into being, formed of men and women who, ‘united in Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit, press onwards towards the kingdom of the Father and are bearers of a message of

salvation intended for all men’ (Gaudium et Spes, n. 1). –Epiphany Homily, 2002
