The Epiphany of the Lord (B) Jan 2/3, 2021 JANUARY -- Month of the Holy Name

The Solemnity of the Epiphany uses the convention of light to celebrate the universal salvation made available through Christ. Isaiah’s splendid poetry and the Magi who followed a star provide apt and joyous images of the truth that was kept hidden in former times but now is boldly proclaimed by Paul: “Gentiles are coheirs…[and] copartners” in God’s promise of salvation in Christ. The manifestation of Christ is not for some, but for all. The solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord has several themes. First, we have the wise men being guided through darkness by the light of the star. Second, we have the star as a sign that leads the wise men to Jesus. Third, we have the manifestation of God to Gentiles, not just Jews pointing to the reality that Jesus came for all people. Fourth, we have the mystery that God does reveal his very self in human flesh. Young children relate better to the themes of signs and being a sign of Jesus to others. It is important to keep repeating those themes throughout the year. Epiphany is a grand event which deserves special attention. To most, an “epiphany” is a fabulous idea that comes right when we need it. Jesus comes each moment—each day of our lives. Continue to give Jesus the attention he deserves. Continue to celebrate Christmas by paying homage to the Christ-child, falling to your knees at the crèche and offering the gifts hidden quietly in your heart. Continue to celebrate the season’s full festivity for we still “need a little Christmas” long after the world has stopped celebrating. Be filled with the awe and wonder which captivated and possessed the three wise ones to give up all they had to search for Jesus and give him the greatest gifts, ones which honored his reign as King and prepared him for what was yet to come, death. Pray with this question: what are you called to give up in your lives daily to search for and then gift back to Christ? Offer your response to God in a way most fitting of your life. The oldest traces of this feast come from Alexandria, Egypt, where the feast of Jesus’ baptism was celebrated around January 6, as “the real moment of the Son of God’s birth into the world”. The Christmas season officially ends next Sunday with the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Today we celebrate the arrival of the three kinds. If “We Three Kings” reminds you of camels crossing the desert, that’s exactly what the composer intended!

FIRST READING (Isaiah 60:1-6) In Isaiah’s splendid poetry, Israel heard a promise of the exiles’ return from Babylonian captivity and a prophesy that Gentiles would one day come to honor the city. Light and darkness are the images he uses to suggest the difference that will be manifest when God’s strong arm demonstrates divine power over the earth. To Christian ears, Isaiah’s words announce the coming of the light of Christ who dispels the “darkness” of sin and fills us with radiant light. Note: it is from this text, not Matthew’s account of the Gospel, that we derive the details of kings and camels that we generally associate with the magi.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8. 10-11, 12-13) The psalm extols the virtues of Israel’s ideal king and prophesies, as does today’s First Reading from Isaiah, the coming of foreign kings to bring gifts and pay homage to the Lord’s servant. The verses offer a blend of praise for and promise of a reign of justice and concern for the poor. God’s anointed does not simply enjoy the privileges of royalty, instead he extends himself on behalf of the people, ensuring them peace built on justice and genuine concern for the poor and afflicted.

SECOND READING (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6) Unique among the band of Apostles, Paul gained knowledge of the mysteries of salvation by direct revelation from Christ himself without ever having known him in the flesh. The special charge entrusted to Paul was to evangelize the Gentiles and such was his success that his efforts could only have been fueled by divine grace. The revelation Paul asserts here was a disquieting one among the early Christians: Gentiles are made coheirs with the Jews. The mercy and generosity of God goes far beyond our own; Jews cannot claim exclusive right to Christ. In Christ, Jews and Gentiles are made members of one body and both are sharers in the promises of Christ.

GOSPEL (Matthew 2:1-12) The arrival of the “magi” and their inquiry regarding the child born to be “king of the Jews” strikes fear in the heart of Herod and all his minions. Immediately, he seeks information about the prophesied birth of the Messiah, so Herod fears not some future human usurper, but the divine will itself that will place a true and eternal king upon the throne of David. The sad details of the story tell of this tragic king’s futile efforts to thwart the will of God through schemes and subterfuge. But we’re left with a hopeful image of a child in his mother’s lap plied with gifts that dimly foreshadow his destiny as King and Savior.

JANUARY – M O NTH OF THE HOLY NAME Throughout the month of January, we give special honor to the name of Jesus. St. Paul write to the Philippians: “At the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10-11). We hold the name of Jesus in special reverence. The very name of Jesus is a prayer. Christ's name is chosen in heaven, and the Angel Gabriel announces it when he informs the Blessed Virgin of the incarnation: "Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb and shalt bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus". It is a name that has marvelous implications, for it means "savior." The very name bespeaks the magnitude of His mission, His infinite love, a love that will cause Him to offer Himself up for us. The name of Jesus is the sweetest of all names, and He who bears it is most worthy of all love. He who calls Jesus his friend can be assured that this friend is the most devoted and unselfish of all friends. Jesus is our all. In His name we may pray to the Father with assurance of being heard. In His name the Church administers all her sacraments. In His name she offers all her prayers and blesses homes, the fields, and the sick. In the name of Jesus she casts out evil spirits, and at the hour of our death bids us, "Go forth, Christian soul." She assures us that whoever shall call upon this name will be saved. When our soul has departed this life to seek its eternal home, the Church asks in the name of Jesus, "Eternal rest give unto him, O
