Three Words? | Help Listen / Read the news story and then choose the correct word from the choices!

381 Illegal Immigrants Blamed Again 1

ENW poses a question at the beginning of this podcast – what happens when a society that 1: follows/eats/worships crocodiles starts to be eaten by these large reptiles? It is an answer that the small maritime southeast Asian country of Timor Leste is trying to 2: quickly/slowly/easily find. Since 2009 the number of fatalities caused by crocodile attacks have increased by 200% with on average one death per-month. So, another question comes to mind; why are Timorese now being killed by their national creature?

2

Trying to find the answer to this growing problem are two biologists from Australia and Japan – Sam Banks and Yusuke Fukuda. The two scientists based at the Australian National University in Darwin 3: drove/undertook/trekked an eight-hour journey to the isolated town of Lospalos in search of answers. The city has a population of 12,000 humans, but more importantly is also home to some of the biggest and most 4: dangerous/friendly/lethal crocodiles in Timor Leste.

3

The reason Mr Banks and Mr Fukuda travelled to Lospalos was to test a theory that has become popular amongst Timorese – the attacks are being perpetuated by 5: travelling/migrant/invading crocodiles. In other words – they are 6: attacking/cursing/blaming immigrants for their problems! Mr Fukuda told the New York Times that they had come to Lospalos because “We became concerned after many people were taken by crocodiles in East Timor.” They also wanted to test the theory that migrant saltwater crocodiles from Australia had swam the 450 km to East Timor and made the island their new home.

4 The idea of migrant crocodiles is not 7: far-fetched/strange/weird, the creatures could easily swim the distance and once arrived, they would be, unfortunately, very hungry. “After several days swimming, these crocs would be very hungry and dangerous to come across,” said Mr. Fukuda. Proving the theory is rather problematic however, as the only way to do so is to take a DNA sample from the crocodiles. This can only be done through a large needle attached to a 3.6m aluminium pole which then needs to be 8: thrust/inserted/withdrawn into a 900 kg crocodile. This, as can be imagined, is rather dangerous as crocodiles aren’t keen on being stabbed!

5 The research carried out by the researchers, it is hoped, will prove that indigenous Timorese crocodiles are 9: free/guilty/innocent. This is actually quite important because in the local Tetum language crocodiles are called ‘abo’ which means grandparent. Killing a crocodile in Timor Leste is not only culturally unacceptable but also illegal. ENW certainly wishes the researchers well in their DNA quest but hope that unlike in certain other countries the illegal immigrants in Timor Leste are not blamed for all their country’s 10: woes/problems/solutions.
