Autumn’s Endeavour...

The recent Business & Enterprise Day, which every student took part in, was designed to develop students’

enterprise skills. The Year 7 challenge was to design a new PE kit for the School. Each form was split into smaller groups, with each group being led by a Managing Director, Director of Finance, Director of Marketing and Director of Design.

Ten Sports Development Service staff from Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council were in School assisting

with this event, managed by Neil Consterdine, Head of Sport Development. He said, “ I was delighted to be invited to this event, and extremely pleased with the work undertaken by

the students today.”

The Year 7 students developed many skills during the day’s activities, including Financial Analysis, ICT

skills and Communication Skills. One team decided that it would be most cost effective to design a unisex PE kit and carefully managed their budget and resources to create the best product they could.

Each team made a PowerPoint presentation, and used electronic whiteboards and projectors to demonstrate

to the rest of the group the positive and negative aspects of their design. Fiona Meachin, Deputy Headteacher, said, “Delivering the presentations really boosted the confidence of many members of the group. They spoke clearly and coherently and the ICT skills used to make the slideshows were fantastic.”

Courtney Hunter, a student, said, “My team chose to display the School logo clearly in our design so at

competitions everybody knows what School we are from.”

Kirsty Lowery, Year 7 Pastoral Leader said, “I have really welcomed today’s challenge. It has made the Business

and Enterprise status a reality to the students. The day has been extremely energetic and lively and the students have definitely enjoyed themselves.”

A group of more than 25 Y12 students have

become fully engaged in Enterprise Education by setting up their own business as part of the nationwide Young Enterprise Scheme.

The scheme currently has more than 5500 schools

and colleges taking part, and allows students to experience life in the ‘Business World’.

The group, headed by Lee O’Loughlin of the

Business Department have only had four meetings, yet everybody has already been assigned to roles, a business plan has been formed, bank

accounts set up, products ordered and manufacture has began.

The business, named Blue Jewel, is specialising

in the production and sale of luxury cosmetic

gift bags, and Managing Director, Charlotte Smith said, “Young Enterprise is a fantastic new experience. I have developed lots of new skills and experienced how real businesses operate.”

Abby Wilson, Director of Production, said,

“Before I joined the Young Enterprise group, I didn’t know much about business or finance, but I have learnt so much in such a short space of time. I am now looking at University courses relating to business and management as I think this would be a really interesting and exciting career path to choose.”

The products will be on sale in School shortly,

and are also available from the company website:

As part of the School’s drive to become more environmentally friendly, an “eco-group” of Year 7 & 8

students has been set up by Nikola Westhead of the Science Faculty. The students have completed an Environmental Review, recorded how electricity and water are used and discovered how litter is dealt with within the School.

They will now create an action plan and share this with the School through assemblies and PSHE lessons.

Eco Group Go Green

The aims of this action plan will include eradicating litter from the School environment, promoting recycling and the reuse of materials, encouraging minimal energy usage and spreading awareness of ecological issues.

The ethics and morals of the scheme link to students’ studies in Science, Geography, Citizenship and Personal,

Social and Health Education, meaning that their knowledge can be applied to the curriculum, as well as being used to gain Eco-School status.

As the students participating are all currently at Lower School, the scheme will be concentrated there, however

Miss Westhead plans to extend the group into the full School as the Year 8 students move to Upper School in September.

Alison Shackleton, Assistant Headteacher, said, “The scheme is an excellent idea and I am proud of all

students participating. We hope to achieve the Bronze Award by Christmas, then move on to accomplish the Silver Award and eventually the Green Flag as this is the scheme’s highest accolade.”

A large group of more than 90 students arrived at the

Sixth Form Block at 8.15am on Business & Enterprise Day to head off to visit the Manufacturing Institute in Trafford Park.

All students were dressed smartly, with the boys

wearing shirts and ties and the girls wearing their most professional outfits.

As we waited for the coaches to arrive, there

were lots of interested faces wondering just why everyone looked so smart.

On the coaches, students discussed what they

would find when they arrived at the Manufacturing Institute. They had a positive attitude about developing a website as their project for the day, but were not too keen on the idea of presenting in front of a large group.

The Manufacturing Institute seemed

enourmous with its mirror-like windows and copper structure. We followed the ornate displays and marble floor through to the lifts. Once at Floor 8, our base

You’ve Got to Make it Happen!

for the day was a conference room equiped with rows of seats and a presentation screen. Nicola Eagleton was there to welcome us to the

Manufacturing Institute.

Nicola set out the purposes of the organisation:

to promote business and manufacturing and to help make the industries more productive through the

provision of training and education programmes. She told us that the aim of the day was to help create a positive image of the manufacturing

sector to encourage more young people to be aware of the positive values of manufacturing.

It was the students’ task for the day, in teams of eight,

to produce ideas for a website to meet the Institute’s vision. The day would end with groups presenting their ideas ‘Dragon’s Den’ style to an imposing panel.

Throughout the day students used various

enterprising skills to complete their tasks such as teamwork, listening, decision making, communication, problem solving, creativity, leadership and planning. With only a few hours and a fictional £1,000 budget, every group produced an idea worthy of North Chadderton.

Year 12 student Philip Urmson said, “We

learnt a lot more about manufacturing and that there are many opportunities in the industry”. George Siskasis agreed, “Yes, I learnt that you need a lot more qualifications than I thought, to work in manufacturing!”

The winning group received gift voucher

and every student received a certificate and the lucky teachers and judges were given a bottle of wine. Don’t drink it all at once!

The scene: a Mathematics classroom filled with eager students. The date: Thursday 19th November - North

Chadderton’s Business & Enterprise Day. Mr Carlisle banged his big, silver pan to get the eager students quiet. He instructed the students to open their large blue wallets.Marked with a country, for example the USA, there was one wallet for every group. Students were required to take on the roles of United Nations ambassadors and trade their goods with other countries. However the goods that were sold were actually shapes made by the students. The banker for the day was our very own Mr Carlisle! We wondered if it was Mr Carlisle’s own money!

The task began:

They started with their basic resources, although some argued the task was unfair, for Americans had all the

resources they could wish for and the Burmese grumbled to themselves for they had to work for their resources. This is a true representation of the real world.

The scene was chaotic but controlled. Students were

running around everywhere trying to make as much money as they could in the

little time they had. The classrooms were filled with sounds of exclamation and enjoyment. All the students got involved and those who were put off at first loved it by the end!

“If You Go Down to the Beach Today........”On Tuesday 26th September, the Year 12 AS Geography

group departed for the annual fieldtrip to Whitby. The aim of the trip was for students to examine coastal environments, sand dunes and river management, to assist in their understanding of the AS Level specification and to obtain data for their Geography coursework, worth 33.3% of the qualification.

Kathryn Rawlinson, Curriculum Leader for Geography, said, “The work required students to work effectively as

a team, collect and collate data for analysis, use ICT software to interpret results and develop communication skills – all of which are useful in life and the world of business.”

Counting out International Economies

The three-day excursion involved working with outside agencies and a local expert to study the human and

physical geography in the diverse and interesting North-Eastern English environment.

The trip was a fantastic success and all students felt that their understanding had been improved by the

experience.

Students, in combination with the Geography Department, are now organising a visit to Edinburgh for high

achieving Year 9 students. The trip will expand and enhance the students’ geographical knowledge and will include visits to the Universities of Edinburgh and St. Andrew’s.

Certain students were getting competitive and joking. Matthew Tupman entertained the whole room, even the

teachers, with his hilarious accents and quick-witted jokes he had everyone in hysterics. He said, “The challenge has been really fun so far.” Another customer satisfied!

All in all, the day went really well. It was really fun and all the students learnt something new. The students

of North Chadderton hope that it will become an annual event!

A spectacular sight greeted Year 12 students on

Wednesday 8th November as they made their way out on to the football field. They were looking forward to working with the RAF as part of their enrichment activities.

The Armed Forces are an example of a group of

people to whom teamwork

and communication skills are essential, and some of these skills were passed on to the Year 12 students during a series of teambuilding and trust exercises in the Sports Hall.

Iain Windeatt, Head of Sixth Form said, “We were

able to organise this event as part of the School’s Business

and Enterprise Status with the intention to try and help develop team building and leadership skills with Year 12. These skills are essential for leading successful careers, and are valued by Universities and employers alike.”

Alan Blackburn, Deputy Headteacher, was

delighted with the success of the event and said, “This type of activity is part of the School’s drive for students to not only leave the sixth form academically successful, but to be well rounded and wholly developed young adults, fully ready to excel in the next stage of their education and careers.”A F
