The Ellsworth High School

Alumni Association

Dear Fellow Alumni,

The EHSAA endowment fund continues to grow and now stands at $709,154. We are pleased to have awarded 14 scholarships totaling $19,000 to deserving EHS graduating seniors and alumni. The 5th annual Bowling for Scholars on April 8 attracted nine teams and the event raised $6,800. At the annual meeting in May, Holly Archer ’05, Thelma Beal ’67, David Burks ’75, Sally Jordan ’65, Chelsea Sawyer ‘07 and Janet Stanley ’64 were reelected to the board. A new fundraiser, Run for Scholars, held on August 26 drew a mixture of alumni, parents, children, and the EHS track team to a social event involving racing, running and walking. The new event raised $824.

With financing from the City of Ellsworth and the Ellsworth School Department, and the talents of Ralph Fahringer, the Association completed the reframing (with some restoration) of class pictures for 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945. All class pictures from 1923 to 1951 (the years that the Moore School was the high school) now hang at the Bryant E. Moore Center. On September 20, the Association donated a US flag, which had been displayed over the US Capitol at the request of Senator Susan Collins, to The Grand Auditorium.

Where Are They Now?

In September, the EHSAA donated a US flag to The Grand. At the request of Senator Susan M. Collins, the flag was flown over the United States Capitol on May 19, 2017 “...in honor of the Ellsworth High School Alumni

Association.” Treasurer Holly Archer and Assistant Treasurer Chelsea Sawyer made the presentation to The Grand’s Executive Director, Nick Turner.

Laurelin Sitterly ’99, one of our first scholarship recipients and designer of the EHSAA logo, was the presenter at the 2017 “Live Animal Study” at the Rhode Island School of Design in May. Attendees experienced “up close and personal” study of live and exotic animals. Laurelin, an RISD alumna and Humane Educator, spoke on each creature’s habits, anatomy and movements.

Cindy Thielen ‘10 received a Maine Press Association photography award in October 2016. Her photo of a wind-toppled tree that hit a Sedgwick house was published in an August 2015 edition of Blue Hill’s Weekly Packet where she interned in June-August 2015 and May-August 2016.

This past summer, Jasmine Ireland ‘95 assumed the position of Director of Education at The Grand. She received her BA in Theatre from the University of Maine and her MFA in Acting from the New School in NY. Jasmine directs the after school performing arts program at EEMS, directs the EHS one-act plays, and choreographs for the EHS musicals and Show Choirs, UMO and USM. Jasmine also finds time to continue acting with Ten Bucks Theatre, Penobscot Theatre Company and True North.

Bowling for Scholars The 5th Annual Bowling for Scholars fundraising event to benefit the Alumni Association took place on April 8. Through the generosity of Eastward Bowling Lanes owner, Paul Linscott, the event was again a great success raising $6,800 for the Endowment.

The Class of 1967, through the generosity of a classmate, donated a flag and a 20-

foot retractable flag pole to the EHS football field. The presentation was in conjunction with the class reunion held in August. The plaque was made by

HW Dunn Memorials.

On August 26, over 50 runners and walkers participated in the first Run for Scholars at the Ellsworth High School cross country course. The event raised over $800.

Charles “Chuck” Brooks ‘63 retired on September 20 after nearly 43 years as a custodian in the Ellsworth School Department. He was at the Knowlton School until it closed in 2010 and since then at the Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School.
