The Feast of St James the GreaterIs celebrated on the 25th July
Merciful God,whose holy apostle Saint James,
leaving his father and all that he had,was obedient to the calling of your Son Jesus Christ
and followed him even to death:help us, forsaking the false attractions of the world,
to be ready at all times to answer your call without delay;through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

From the Bishop Dear friends,
At the beginning of July I will be ordaining nine new deacons and nineteen new priests at two services of ordination in our Cathedral. For me, as bishop, ordination services are a special moment. I am deeply moved and humbled to see these people stand before God, ready to commit their lives to following Jesus and to serving his church.
The process that leads to ordination is a long and sometimes arduous one. It takes years of reflection and study to discern the essential nature of the call from God which each individual experiences. While not everyone is called to pursue a life in the ordained ministry, that model of reflecting and studying to discern God’s call to us is one which all of us can follow. Although the way ahead may not always be clear, the one thing of which we can always be certain is that God is calling us, and he has work for each of us to do.
I know many of you will be walking alongside these new deacons and new priests as they explore and begin to live out what the call to ordained ministry means for each of them in their lives and in the congregations in which they will be serving.
The lifelong task for each one of us is to do as these new deacons and priests are doing; to listen to God’s call; to reflect on its meaning for us; to answer and respond in our own lives. Each one of us - wherever we are, whoever we are and whatever gifts and skills we have been given - is called to use our gifts to the glory of God and in the service of others.
May God be with you as you discern his will for you that, in grace, you may be enabled to respond with joy.

Cost £6 per person Quiz, Games and Good Company Sutton St Edmund Church held their Summer Fair on Sunday 14th June. The weather was a little cool and cloudy but the rain that had plagued the previous day’s summer fair at Guanock House held off. There was tea and cake on offer in the church and, with musical accompaniment from June Neale on the organ, plenty of opportunity to sit in the warm and enjoy a good conversation. Outside in the churchyard there was an interesting display of classic cars put on by the Wisbech and District Historic Vehicle Club, and plenty of enthusiasts willing to chat about their passion for these lovely vehicles. The stalls offering raffles, competitions and plants did a good trade and the various challenges in St Edmund’s Alley were well contested, ‘Splat the Rat’ and bunging bean bags into various shaped holes proved particularly challenging! There were plenty of visitors as well as people helping on the stalls from the other churches in the Elloe Fen group. The afternoon ended with a lovely ‘Songs of Praise’ service. Thanks to everyone who played a part in this celebration; special thanks go to June for playing the organ throughout the afternoon and then for the service.Gedney Hill C of E Primary School will be celebrating weddings in July. The children themselves will be having a mock service during the school day followed by a wedding buffet. The Bride and Groom have been chosen along with the Bridesmaids and the Best Man. They have learned what it means to read the Banns of Marriage, studied a Wedding Service, written the invitations and orders of service as well as learning all about marriage and what it stands for and what it means to be a Bride and a Groom. I hope that we get to see the wedding photographs.
Sally Clifton is starting a Youth Club in Sutton St James for 10 - 14year olds. It will be held every Friday Night between 6pm and 9pm in the Church Hall and Paddock; it is a sports based club for children in the age range, who attend or who have attended the Sutton St James Primary School. A ‘getting
to know you BBQ’ was held on Friday 26th June so that children and parents could come along and see what is planned, play with the sports equipment and offer their ideas about how they want the club to be run, the rules they think they need to be safe and what other activities they would like to be able to do in the future. Call Sall on 019450440168 for more information.
Thank you to Judith Nash for this little Offering! A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car.His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car."The boy thought about that for a moment, decided, he'd settle for the offer, and they agreed on it.After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut."The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair."(You're going to love the Dad's reply!) … "Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went?" By Sally Clifton; some of you may have noticed that I say a particular prayer before a sermon; I first heard it used by Sally Myers who is the head of the Lincoln School of Theology and she always prays it before her sermons. I find it a useful reminder that my thoughts on the Holy Scriptures are not as important as God’s thoughts on His Holy Word!
“Dear Lord; may any words that are from you, find their intended resting place; and any that are mine alone float harmlessly away”.

Gedney Hill W.I. met on Wednesday the 24th of June for a meeting and talk by Dr Eric Somerville on the subject of Quacks and Quackery, taking us right back to the origins of the word which can be traced to the 16th C. He took us right through the centuries of bloodletting, mad and dangerous cures, and the fact that most doctors until the 1880's were very dangerous people! Until the advent of proper dissection and the knowledge of bacteria and infection, going to the doctor was a last resort, it was also expensive which is where the Quacks took over, claiming to cure everything from baldness to cancer in the same pill. Dr Somerville had some very interesting cuttings from the Wisbech newspapers showing that these useless pills were still being advertised as late as the 1930's. Sadly, as he pointed out, quackery is still with us, there will always be those willing to relieve desperate people of their money. Such is life. On a happier note, we were very lucky this year to be able to go to the W.I. AGM, albeit in spirit by the wonder of live screening at the South Holland Centre, and about 200 of us went to see the live proceedings which was attended this year by HM the Queen who is the Honorary President of Sandringham W.I., the Princess Royal and Sophie, Countess of Wessex; it was a great way to celebrate our 100th anniversary. We have had some good evenings out too, a fashion show at Tydd St Giles, an evening being shown round Butters in Spalding. What a set-up that is, you would never believe how big the place is. No wonder they told us to wear flat shoes. We also welcomed our W.I. baby, William, he is about 3 weeks old and he came to see us at our meeting with his Mum, as you can imagine, he was cooed over rather a lot, but slept through it, bless his little bootees.
Next meeting will be at Patty’s house on the 22nd of July for the garden meeting, with music and buffet, fingers crossed for the weather.

June’s family get together was all about what you would like to be when you grow up and what would the Lord like you be? The July Family Get Together theme will be friendship. A great crowd got together and enjoyed bacon or sausage or egg rolls, cake, competitions and crafts at the Family Brunch held on Sunday 7th June between 10.30am to 12.30pm.
St John the Baptist held their annual Gift Day & Craft Exhibition on Saturday27th June. The Church was open between 10am and 4pm to enable visitors to enjoy examples of the range of crafts that are practised in Whaplode Drove. Lunches were available in the Church Room between 11am and 2pm and were very well attended; they made a profit of £345. The Church was open again for viewing the Craft Exhibition on Sunday afternoon.
The members of the WI visited Butters on the evening of Wednesday 10th June. They all enjoyed their evening and were as impressed by the scale of the business as their friends in Gedney Hill W.I. They listened to a very interesting talk, enjoyed refreshments and a super raffle before receiving pots of petunias as they left. The Whaplode Drove WI will hold their birthday party on Tuesday 7th and, back by popular demand, Jane and Brenda will be doing their Great British Takeoff, and it promises to be as hilarious (but not so risqué) as last year’s romantic menu!

There was a dog show, pony rides, refreshments including a brilliant BBQ, team games organised, created and run by the children of the four house teams, and local organisations had stalls showcasing their interests. One very popular was a local branch of a cat welfare group who brought along some ‘rescue’ kittens for people to cuddle; they and those who gave the cuddles enjoyed their afternoon. One of the highlights was the ballet and dance displays given by children from the Endana and the Rebecca Dear Schools of Dance. The PTA had been very successful in securing items for auction including meals at restaurants and family tickets for days out at local attractions. The star prize was a print of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight signed by the crew and support staff and there was some very stiff bidding for this item. There was a lovely atmosphere all afternoon, and as a veteran of about 9 PTA fetes I have to say that this was easily the best ever.On Friday 10th July the school would like to welcome anyone who would like to have a go at ice skating! Yes, you read that correctly, ice skating in July. A synthetic rink will be installed at the school for one day only and everyone is welcome to contact the school on 01945 440209 to book a 30 minute slot between 3.30pm and 7.30pm – book early as this one is likely to sell out! Other attractions include a BBQ, tombola and a bouncy castle. All the children in our village schools are very lucky to be led by such innovative, lively and enthusiastic Head teachers, teaching and support staff and PTAs. We pray that you will all enjoy your
well earned summer break and come back refreshed in September. To receive this newsletter over the summer hols send Sall your email addresses on [email protected].

A Prayer for all who suffer persecution for their FaithO Lord God,
Your Son Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.In his resurrection he restores life and peace in all creation.

Remember in your kingdom those who have died.Lead the oppressors towards compassion and give hope to the suffering.
Through the same Jesus Christ our LordAmen.

After the attacks in Tunisia the Church of England has released these prayers;
Lord, have mercyon those who mourn
who feel numb and crushedand are filled with the pain of grief,
whose strength has given upYou know all our sighing and longings:
be near to us and teach us to fix our hope on youthrough Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
A Prayer for Children
Loving God,your Son told his disciples to become like little children.
Lead us to work for the welfare and protection of all young people.May we respect their dignity that they may flourish in life, following the example of the same Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Following the Recent Attacks on People the World Over You might find these prayers of some comfort.
Compassionate God and Father of all,
we are horrified at violencein so many parts of the world.
It seems that none are safe, and some are terrified.Hold back the hands that kill and maim;
turn around the hearts that hate.Grant instead your strong Spirit of Peace -
peace that passes our understandingbut changes lives,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen
God of Hope,we come to you in shock and grief and confusion of heart.
Help us to find peace in the knowledgeof your loving mercy to all your children,
and give us light to guide us out of our darknessinto the assurance of your love,
In Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Merciful God, hear the cries of our grief,
for you know the anguish of our hearts. It is beyond our understanding
and more than we can bear.We pray that justice may be done
and that we may treasure the memory of their lives
more than the manner of their death. For Christ's sake
Amen
