Acid Rain

• Acid rain is very problematic to the environment and it affects a good amount of the U.S, and Canada.

The making of acid rain

• Acid rain is a mixture of wet and dry deposition containing higher than normal levels of nitric, and sulfuric acids.

Chemicals of acid rain

• The chemicals that form acid rain comes from both natural and man-made sources

• Natural sources-volcanoes, and decaying vegetation

• Man-made sources-the byproducts of fossil fuel ignition which is sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides.

Deposited material

• Wet deposition-refers to acidic rain, snow, or fog.

• Dry deposition-If the weather is dry, acid chemicals change to dust, or smoke and fall to the ground

Effects of Acid Rain

• 1.Acidification of lakes and streams-dead aquatic life

• 2.Helps towards the damage of trees at high elevations.

• 3.Destroys sensitive forest soils.• 4.Speeds up the decay of building materials

and paint

Effect on aquatic life

• If the number of one group of species changes in response to acidification, then the ecological unit of the entire water body is likely to be affected through the predator-prey connections of the food web.

Effect on wildlife

• Animals dependent on aquatic ecosystems are affected.

• Since acid rain affects aquatic plants and animals, food for other organisms may be lacking.

• If plants keep dying from acid rain, eventually there will be no more left, and with that, no more humans left too. Why?

• How are we supposed to breathe without air?

Prevention of acid rain

• It is the products we use such as lawnmowers, edgers, cars, or anything that burns gas or diesel, that causes acid rain

• A simple way of contributing to the prevention of acid rain, is to convert from these gas consuming products to products that use electricity instead.
