Message from the Headmaster

Dear Parents and Community Members

As you are aware, the Middle, Senior and Year 12 Prize ceremony was held last Friday afternoon. We were

blessed with fine weather which was most fortunate as the function once again was held outdoors.

Mgr Charles Scicluna was our special guest. MGR SCICLUNA was born of Maltese parents in Toronto,

Canada in 1959. He was educated in Malta at St Joseph Secondary Technical School (1970 - 1975) and at St

Edward‘s College (1975 - 1976). In 1976 he entered the University of Malta were he graduated Doctor of

Laws in 1984. After completing his Seminary studies and a Licentiate in Pastoral Theology (1978 – 1986),

he was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood in 1986.

He read Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University and obtained the doctorate with specialization in

Jurisprudence in 1991. His thesis, The Essential Definition of Marriage According to the 1917 and 1983

Codes of Canon Law, was published by the University Press of America in 1995. After his Rome studies,

Mgr Scicluna worked on the Malta Metropolitan Tribunal as Defender of the Bond and was a lecturer in Pas-

toral Theology and Canon Law at the University of Malta. In 1995, he was called to the Vatican to work on

the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura as Substitute Promoter of Justice.

In October 2002, he was nominated Promoter of Justice at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

He has since lectured widely on the more grave crimes reserved to the exclusive competence of the Congre-

gation and on issues concerning child protection in the Church. Mgr Scicluna is a Visiting Professor in Penal

Processes at the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome).

From 1996 to 2007, he was Postulator for the Cause of Canonization of Saint George Preca, founder of the

Society of Christian Doctrine and the first Maltese to be canonized. He is Postulator in a number of other

Maltese cases presently pending before the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints.

Mgr Charles Scicluna‘s address for the evening was based on our College motto: “VIRTUS ET HONOR”.

Mgr Scicluna challenged the audience with the following question: What are the characteristics of such a vir-

tuous man? Well, the classic answer, our guest explained, is that there are four principal characteristics

which will show you how good or how virtuous a person is. These four characteristics or virtues are like

pivots or hinges on a very particular door: the door to the human heart.

The Latin word for hinge is ―cardo‖ and so we refer to these four pivotal characteristics as the "Cardinal

Virtues"; all the other virtues are grouped around them. These four pivotal or cardinal virtues are: prudence,

justice, fortitude, and temperance. This means that the really good or virtuous person will be prudent, just,

courageous and would practise self-control.

Christmas Raffle 2010

APPEAL

Many Old Edwardians will fondly remember Ms Josephine Spiteri who was a Year 2 class teacher for many

years. She is now retired and does voluntary work at the ‗St Jeanne Antide Foundation‘ in Tarxien.

Among the many services offered by this foundation is the Homework Club. Ms Spiteri forms part of the

Homework Services Team.. The club is for children and young persons who cannot cope with their school

homework because they may not have enough support at home or for some other reason approved by the social

worker. One-to-one homework assistance is given to families selected in consultation with the social worker

from the Centre. The assistance is tailor-made to the needs of each child.

Ms Spiteri told us that the Foundation is always in need of monetary and/or educational resources and we have

decided to fund raise for this noble cause.

We welcome any gifts you could donate We will use these gifts as prizes for this year’s Christmas Raffle.

The nicer the prizes the more tickets we shall sell!!!

Please help us help the less fortunate this Christmas

Health & Safety

On Tuesday morning ,the Year 6 classes attended a very interesting talk associated with Health and

Safety. It lasted one hour and it was given by Ms Kim Agius, a member of the Department of Health

and safety. I learnt a lot of new things related to the subject.

For example, what some safety signs mean:

Signs that show us what to do when there is a fire

What to do in an emergency

Signs that show us that there is danger

Signs that show us what to wear

Signs that show us what to do or what not to do

We also learnt what we should and should not do as we watched a funny and entertaining DVD about

NAPO, a character who teaches us safety through movements and sounds, not words. The DVD in-

cluded short episodes and one of them was about the time when NAPO was washing and he forgot to

put the ‗WARNING SLIPPERRY FLOOR‘ sign. His boss ended up slipping on the wet floor!! We all

laughed heartily.

When the DVD finished Ms Pace Bonello reluctantly put on a safety helmet, a pair of safety goggles

and a green safety vest. How we laughed! You should have seen our faces! The talk ended and as I

walked to the art room I began reflecting on the talk. Well it was an interesting and different break from

the usual daily lessons
