Front Cover PhotosTy’s wonderful show of Lavender. If you have a seasonal photo you wish to see on thefront cover of the Ecton View please email it to me.

Where did it go? - Welcome to the September edition of the Ecton View, yes its September,I can’t believe the summer months have come and gone, lets hope for an India Summer(until about March 2017!)I have had some more feedback from you, the readers, in particular on crime and theupsurge in fly tipping.

Firstly I would like to thank Linda Lane, Veronica O’Rourke & Jennie Bone for their tirelessefforts in tackling Anglian Water, with regards to their gateway in Lower Ecton Lane. Moredetails of this progress in the Letters Page.

Please keep reporting fly tipping, the more we report it the more both Councils have tolisten to us. Don’t be shy, phone them, e-mail and keep pestering them to clean up. I amputting together a separate booklet with all the relevant details in.

I would personally like to thank the band of willing ‘Litter Pickers’ all around the village, youare doing a fantastic job at keeping the heart of the village clean and tidy. If anyone isinterested in joining us please contact me for details.

Secondly we had distressing news of an Arson attack at East Lodge Farm and yet anotherburglary in the village, this time in broad daylight! I really hope the perpetrators get what'scoming to them!

On a far happier note, congratulations to Andrew & Sarah Kirkaldy on their recent weddingin Scotland, a true highland fling if the pictures on Facebook are anything to go by!This months front cover is of Ty Moffat’s fragrant Lavender border in West Street.

No one knows when the first ring-necked parakeet arrived, but there are reports ofescaped parakeets as early as 1855! There are various wild theories as to how they cameto live here; Released from the set of The African Queen, An angry wife smashing herhusbands aviary to Jimi Hendrix releasing his breeding pair called Adam & Eve! Buthowever, since the early 1970’s, they have started to breed and have now become aninvasive species. So don’t be concerned they can fend for themselves.

Letter from the RectorySeptember marks the end of summer and the beginning ofautumn, that beautiful season when the leaves on the trees arechanging colour, the fruits of the earth are harvested and bulbscan be planted for spring flowering. In the Rectory garden therunner beans are really coming into their own now and, asgardeners know, there is a great joy in being able pick, cook and eat somethingyou have grown all within half an hour. Fruit also seems to be in abundance thisyear with many blackberries ripening on the bushes we ruthlessly cut back in thespring.September is also the month, along with October, for the church to hold thetraditional Harvest Festival Thanksgiving Service. Harvest is a moveable feast inthe church calendar and this year at St Mary Magdalene’s the service will be heldat 11am on Sunday 16th October. We will be singing the traditional harvesthymns and bringing our harvest gifts to the altar, with the non -perishable foodbeing given to the Daylight Centre. The fruits of the earth take time to grow and mature, but when ready can tastesweet and be shared with friends and neighbours, especially welcomed by thosewith no means of growing their own. But whether we grow our own or not we canall cultivate what Jesus described as the fruits of the Spirit. The fruits of the Spiritare love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, gentleness and self-control(Galatians 5:22-23) and, whether we class ourselves as Christians or not, we canall grow and make the world a better place by producing such fruit in our livesand sharing that fruit with others.I hope you are able to enjoy some of the fresh, local produce available at this timeof year and I welcome you to come and join us on 16th October when we will givethanks to God for another harvest and a world capable of providing enough foodfor all, if only we share what we have.Yours in Christ,Revd. Jackie BuckRector of Great Doddington, Wilby and Ecton. - 01933 631232

Broadband in EctonI know a number of people are interested in knowing about the progress withdelivering super-fast broadband across Ecton.

The village is served by two BT cabinets, one of which provides super-fast broadbandbut the other what can only be described as slow and variable speed broadband atleast to my house! Even the cabinet that provides super-fast broadband is slowcompared to some of the speeds being provided elsewhere in the country.

This link provides you with an update on progress with the delivery of super-fastbroadband in Northamptonshire:

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SuperfastNorthamptonshireSurvey

No news for Ecton yet but there is a survey in the newsletter which may help movethings along. So if you are interested in enjoying faster broadband and not frequentbuffering please complete the survey by 30th September.

Robert East

Joy Wilson would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes.

Update on discussions with Anglian Water - Lower Ecton LaneAnglia Water say a decision has been made on Health & Safety grounds to not move thegate, belonging to AWA along Lower Ecton Lane, due to the fact that the camera, installedon a trial basis, stopped the tipping. The plan is now to permanently install a camera with alive feed being monitored 24 hours a day and if any unauthorised vehicles pull into thedrive way they are warned via a live voice feed to leave site and if they fail to do so thepolice are called immediately.

Vincent Raggett, Supply Performance Manager of Anglian Water also stated to Linda,Veronica and myself, by email, that “Every time that tipping has been reported I havearranged for it to be removed at a substantial cost to AW, this tipping has increased greatlysince the decision to not open the Council Tip every day.”

If you wish to contact Vincent Raggett his email is [email protected] ring 01604 447542 or 07736 118184 with a simple message and lend Ecton Village yoursupport. Thank you.

The footpath to CogenhoeEverybody who knows me, will know that I walk my dog down this path everyday, however perhaps it is not known that this pathway is one the bestwildlife areas in Northamptonshire. At this time of the year the CommandersSpinney has small flocks of Long Tailed and Marsh Tits the odd overwintering Chiffchaff along with the Jays, Green Woodpeckers, Tree Creepersand Buzzards along with the common woodland birds like Blackbirds, Robins,Wrens, Blue, Great and Coal Tits and Chaffinches. In the fields we havemixed flocks of Fieldfare and Redwings, Lapwings. feeding Swans, Greylagand Canadian Geese. The Reed beds have Reed Buntings, Goldfinches andthe very rare Bearded Tits, Cetti’s & Siberian Warblers, On the river we haveKingfishers and Grey Herons. When Spring arrives Commanders Spinney birdsare joined by even more Chiffchaffs, Whitethroats, Wood, Willow, Garden &Sedge Warblers & Blackcaps. I hear the Skylarks singing in the fields and thewater ways have Swallows, House and Sand Martins catching flies, andYellow Wagtails hunt beside the Lakes. Reed Warblers come to the reedbeds. During my walks I have seen Long Eared and Barn Owls, Ospreys, LittleEgrets, Bitterns, Cormorants, Little and Great Crested Grebes, Water Rails,Sparrowhawks, Red Kites and Barnacle Geese. I have also seen Hares, Foxes,Badgers, Polecats, Otters, Weasels, Stoats & Muntjac Deer, Flogs & GrassShakes. There are Orange Tips, Peacocks, Small Tortoiseshells, Comma,Marbled Whites, Woodland Graylings, Meadow Browns, Gatekeepers, Ringletsand Speckled Wood butterflies, Broad Bodied Chaser, Common Darter, FourSpotted Chaser, Emperor, Hairy, Ruddy Darters and Migrant HawkerDragonflies, Common Blue Damselflies and Banded Demoiselle fly fromspring to Autumn. In fact, early one evening late in September I saw 60 to100 Common Darters flying in the evening sunlight. Perhaps my favouritething on my walks is seeing the Four Spotted Chasers flying with their copperwings shining in the sunlight. It is a shame that some sad people wish to spoilthe pathway by dumping rubbish. The countryside should be enjoyed by usall but left in the same state for others to enjoy.Peter Thorn

(Not to Scale)

Jude’s Walk of the Month. For those of you who regularly walk to Weston Favell Shopping Centre (and thosewho don’t), here is a linear walk that avoids most of the A4500. OS Map 223 - about40 minutes. Take the bus for the return trip once you have done your shopping!!

1. Start at the Shrine and walk down West Street, Turn right at the end, throughthe kissing gate and straight down the field, through the next gate and up thehill. At the next kissing gate turn left and follow the edge of the field towardsEcton Brook.

2. At the bottom go through the narrow gap, over the wooden bridge and at thepond walk in an anticlockwise direction until you are almost opposite the pathyou have just walked down. Follow the tarmac path under two underpasses andthen up the hill into Great Billing Pocket Park. Go past the Pavilion and throughthe wide path as far as the road.

3. Cross the road and walk down Church Walk and continue towards the Churchcar park. You will then see a gap in the fence and an avenue of trees.

4. Walk between the trees and down the hill until you reach Fishponds Road.5. Turn right and walk along the path until you are almost at the T-junction. Follow

the path that runs parallel with Great Billing Way until you reach the zebracrossing.
