Can you believe it that we are already heading straight into March 2015? Wow, time sure doesn’t wait for anyone or anything. This March, we are proud to present to you American videogame, comic book and anime sketch artist Long Vo. Just to get you even more excited about him, do know that he is the lead artist for Super Street Fighter and that he is coming to Dubai for the Middle East Film and Comic Con, taking place from April 9 to 11.

Another cool person that we have this month would definitely have to be Japanese illustrator Yoskay Yamamoto, who is a self-taught artist. Yoskay’s work is simply surreal — he loves to blend iconic pop characters from the West with traditional and mythical Japanese influences, creating a harmonious art piece that is quite soothing to look at.

For all the car lovers, we now have a dedicated section devoted to the love for cars! This month, we have an article about the colour evolution of cars since the birth of Henry Ford’s Model T, which opened the door for mass-production vehicles, style and class.

On a fun and exciting note, do check out our trendy spring colour inspiration for this season’s best and brightest. It will definitely help you to stay connected with the latest colours, fabrics and must-haves.

Until next month, Ciao.

AlbumReviews12

Ne-Yo's sixth album is being positioned as a return to the R&B singer's musical roots. It's an attempt to grab back his core fan base, given his affinity for dabbling in dance and electronic music in recent years. In Non-Fiction, Ne-Yo attempts to remind listeners of his previously celebrated songwriting capabilities for artists such as Rihanna (Take A Bow) and Beyoncé (Irreplaceable). Ne-Yo's MJ-indebted falsetto does deliver some highlights on the album, particularly on the slow-burning Integrity, as well as on standout ballad Take You There. Meanwhile, Religious adds a certain flair to the latest album. And by this point, we have all heard Time of Our Life, which was done in collaboration with Pitbull and is definitely our favourite. Though Ne-Yo has significantly toned down the electronic dance music influence on this album, he does attempt to combine R&B and dance with efforts such as Coming Home With You. Overall, this is a pretty decent album with some great numbers.

Kid Ink isn’t a classic hip-hop artist who naturally comes up with jaw-dropping metaphors. He is, however, an experienced MC and his rhymes and melodic hooks definitely command attention. Within his latest album, Full Speed, he offers 12 songs that put listeners through a range of feelings — confident, go-mode and club-hopping-mode.

Full Speed begins with the energetic and triumphant What It Feels Like, with Kid Ink’s crisp voice creeping over blaring horns alongside the soothing hums of a female voice as he raps about going beast without sleep or food. What It Feels Like strategically sets the feel-good tone for Full Speed by following the club-friendly formula that makes Kid Ink a popular choice on radios.

With Kid Ink’s first song itself sitting comfortably on the radio and in clubs, the second track, Faster, brings it home with his easy-to-remember lyrics that mesh well with the thumping bass and makes listeners want to bounce along and move.

Overall, Full Speed is probably Kid Ink’s best project to date. He sounds focused and he executes by pleasing his core fans with quality radio- and club-friendly music.

American SniperThe movie starts with a father taking young Chris out for shooting. Observing the boy’s instant expertise with a rifle, he says, appreciatively, “You got a gift. You’re going to be a fine hunter someday.” Yet in his training as a Navy SEAL, the grown-up Chris (Bradley Cooper) has trouble hitting a metal target. “I’m better when it’s breathin’,” he tells the instructor, as he notices some furtive movement in the grass behind the target. Blam! He kills a snake.

It feels great to see director Clint Eastwood back on his game at age 84, creating a movie about the tragically short life of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. Kyle was the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history, and had 160 confirmed kills over four tours in Iraq. Eastwood was able to throw the audience into the war zone, where conscience has nothing to do with killer instinct. We loved Bradley Cooper’s astonishing all-out performance, for which he put on 40 pounds of muscle to play Kyle, a flag-waving, good old Texas boy who sees evil in the world and aims to do something about it.

The movie tries to depict how Kyle returns home between tours to his wife, Taya (Sienna Miller), and their two kids. The scenes have an obligatory feel, meant to show the emotional fortress Kyle had built around himself. Cooper is able to portray the pain Kyle felt through his eyes, and he even manages to show how Kyle was always on danger alert. Overall, the movie is pretty spectacular. The filmmakers' targets were clearly in sight, and their aim was true.

PaddingtonPaddington, that lovely, peculiar bear in the trademark blue duffle coat and red hat, has been a British institution since Michael Bond's wildly successful children's book, A Bear Called Paddington.

Famous for his fondness for marmalade, Paddington has since taken more than half a century to make his big-screen debut with Paddington, a charming, witty, gentle mix of live action and CGI that will delight children and parents. The movie starts out with the audience learning of Paddington's origins — he comes from a small Peruvian community of bears based in a forest. A British explorer befriends the affable bears and paints such a glowing picture of life in London that Paddington's aunt (voiced by Imelda Staunton) and uncle (Michael Gambon) send the orphan to live in the city with the Brown family.

Paddington keeps things moving at a nice pace, throwing its half-pint hero into one misadventure after another. These involve a double-decker bus, a skateboard, a subway escalator, and a toilet (he floods the bathroom when his head gets stuck down there).

The movie features a playful Ben Whishaw as the bear's voice, and it feels great to see an animated movie that isn’t overfed on comic-book sarcasm. The bear's immaculate manners, perfect diction, and sincerity make him the ultimate anti-Bart Simpson.

Grim Fandango Re-Mastered (PS4, Xbox One, PC)Based on various legends of Mexican folklore, Grim Fandango is packed to the hilt with dancing skeletons, crime, romance, and much more. You play Manny Calavera, a mid-level worker at the Department of Death (DoD), who's trying to work off his sins in life so that he can claim his final reward. As a reaper, Manny frees incoming souls from their shrouds, finds out what kind of underworld travel packages their goodness in life has earned them, and then sends them on their way. Unfortunately, business hasn't been very good for Manny of late. As the game begins, Calavera is told that he must sell a premium travel package to a soul or lose his job. In his search, Manny uncovers a hideous plot, a beautiful woman, and a crew of loyal friends (not necessarily in that order).

Based on the acclaimed 1998 classic, this remake of Tim Schafer's original adventure title employs the stunning technology used to bring Broken Age to life for a fresh new way to experience Grim Fandango.

The game’s greatest triumph, however, is that you needn’t overflow with nostalgia to appreciate its greatness. We love the game as it is a world filled with evil demons, which you see through the eyes of one Manny Calavera, an everyday hero that has rightfully earned a place in video game history. Even if you don’t know what happens at the end of the line, you’re guaranteed to enjoy the trip.

Dying Light (PS4, PC, PlayStation Vita)In Dying Light, a first-person, action survival horror game, players must use everything in their power to survive until the morning's first light in a vast open world filled with danger. During the day, players will traverse an expansive urban environment overrun by a vicious outbreak, scavenging the world for supplies and crafting weapons to defend against the growing infected population. At night, the hunter becomes the hunted, as the infected become aggressive and more dangerous. Most frightening are the predators that only appear after sundown. Dying Light also sets itself apart with its parkour system, which sees you running across the city from a first-person perspective. It takes a short while to get used to climbing onto ledges, which requires you to be looking at them in the proper way. But then it's off to the races, and you're running across rooftops and sneering at the zombies below, most of which can't handle the climb. Rushing through the open world this way is terrific, due to solid (if not quite perfect) controls and well-constructed climbing and leaping paths, particularly in the game's second half, which takes place in the city's vertically-minded old town. We are definitely rooting for Dying Light as it is such a fun game. Despite its lags and issues, we still love it.

Page 17: The Eclectic Issue

Citizens of Earth (PS4, 3DS, PC, Vita)Citizens of Earth is an RPG that places you in the shoes of the vice president of the sorld. He's a classic bureaucrat: charming, charismatic, but practically useless. After recently winning the vice presidency, he returns to his rural home town for a short vacation. But he soon discovers that there are extremely strange things happening around town. Feeling a sense of responsibility as an elected official, he decides to do something about it. But being the bureaucrat he is, he doesn't actually want to get his hands dirty. Thus you go about using your charisma to recruit normal townsfolk to help you investigate the strange happenings and to fight your battles for you.

The game defies traditional hero types and character classes seen in traditional RPGs — instead, you're able to recruit and fight with the town baker, barista, school teacher, homeless guy, and plenty of other seemingly ordinary characters brought to life in unique and charming ways.

Huawei Ascend P7DesignThe Huawei Ascend P7 design is quite unique in some ways, though admittedly it has borrowed a great deal from the iPhone. Its front and back are covered with Corning’s latest Gorilla glass and there are hardly any plastics on the phone's exterior. At 6.5mm thick, completed with a metallic body, it feels fantastic on the hands. The speakers are placed upfront along with an 8MP secondary camera and sensor.

Display The Ascend P7 has a 5-inch full HD 1080p display with pixel density of 445 ppi. However, as the bezel has been shrunk down to 3mm, the display doesn’t look as big as it is. Colours are well saturated, and the overall picture and video viewing experience is universally good.

HardwareThe phone is powered by quad-core 1.8 GHz processor and 2 GB RAM, which offers decent performance considering the modest price. The Ascend P7 is also completed with 2,500 mAH battery, which provides a respectable battery life.

Software The P7 runs on Android 4.4, in which Huawei has included its Emotion UI skin. As a result, the app menu is discarded and every app has a place on the home screen itself. A variety of themes that can change the icon, home screens and more are also available to users, which makes it more interactive and fun.

Camera The Ascend P7 comes with a 13 MP primary camera, which offers raving quality images, as well as a front-facing 8 MP selfie camera, which is far better than most other rival offerings.

VerdictThe Ascend P7 is best in terms of build materials and feel. The phone is incredibly thin, with a gorgeous seven-layer effect on the back. The device, with its decent specifications and fairly nice display, doesn’t disappoint considering its performance and feel-good appearance.

Samsung Galaxy A5DesignThe Samsung Galaxy A5 has definitely created a compelling product that does not disappoint. The phone features high-end specifications with a metallic body, yet it comes with a wallet-friendly price tag. The A5 is a super-slim device and one of the nicest designs that Samsung has ever produced.

Display The A5 has a 5-inch super AMOLED display with 720p resolution and a 294 ppi pixel density. The screen-to-body ratio stands at 71%. Overall the display offers a visually appealing experience.

HardwareThe Samsung Galaxy A5 comes with quad-core 64 bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, clocked at 1.2 GHz, along with an Adreno 306 GPU and 2 GB of RAM, which combine to offer impressive performance. The A5 comes with a 2,300 mAh battery, which keeps it alive for your daily needs. The power button and the dual-SIM card slots are on the right and the volume rocker on the left. The bottom is equipped with the headphone jack and micro USB ports. Overall the phone is light and sleek at 123 g and only 6.7 mm thick.

Software The A5 Runs on Android 4.4 KitKat with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface. The experience is rich with likeable options, and that might even get more impressive when once the phone gets updated to the newer Android 5.0 Lollipop OS.

Camera The A5 offers a 13 MP primary camera and a 5 MP secondary front camera. The phone provides stunning images, even in limited-light conditions, with its speedy shutter and quick-to-focus ability. Its secondary camera also provides impressive detailed images and is great for creating selfies.

VerdictThe Samsung Galaxy A5 is a great phone that provides an amazing overall experience. With a stylish design and respectable specifications, the A5 tops the list of the best Android smartphones currently available.

26 Spring Colours for Her by olga lobanova

Pink is the new black, orange is the new black, or is black the new black? Pantone is the right answer to any of your colour dilemmas this season. Pantone experts gaze into their colourful crystal balls and see the future of trending hues. After studying upcoming collections and talking to designers about their tone philosophies, Pantone has come up with a report for everyone to be on top of the coolest colour trend.

After scanning sketches, runways, and collections, Pantone narrowed down the top 10 colours as favoured by designers all around the world.

This season, there is a move toward the cooler and softer side of the colour spectrum. An eclectic, delicate mix of understated pale pastels and nature-like neutrals will dominate wardrobes.

“Many feel compelled to be connected around the clock because they are afraid they will miss out on something important. There is a growing movement to step out and create ‘quiet zones’ to disconnect from technology and unwind, giving ourselves time to stop and be still,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. That means if you’re feeling frazzled and stressed, just wear some cool blue and you'll calm right down.

For spring women’s-wear, Aquamarine topped the list, followed by Scuba Blue (a cool turquoise), and Lucite Green (a minty shade). The men's styles varied more than usual from the women's styles this season; a Greyish Dusk Blue took top honours, with Glacier Grey and Treetop Green close behind.

Long Vo is known online as VO, or Vostalgic, is an entrepreneur, freelance illustrator, producer and creative art director for Hiptic Games. Long is also one of the three original founders of Gaia Online, one of the first social gaming success stories — an anime-themed social networking and forum-based gaming website that grew to over 26 million registered users. Prior to this, Long produced illustrations, multimedia and comic books for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Wildstorm, Image Comics, UDON and many other publishers.

Long was the lead sprite designer for Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix, a high-definition remake of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo that was released on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network in November 2008. He provided artwork for the limited collector's edition of Street Fighter IV, released in 2009, and was the lead ending artist on Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars for the Nintendo Wii.

Long still manages to do work for UDON and Capcom while creating new original IP and games for Hiptic Games. He is also known for his photography, costume making, videography and digital imagery.

32Tell us about yourself. What are the basics? My name is Long Vo and I'm the creative director for Hiptic Games. We make mobile games like GoNinja and Shaqdown, starring Shaquille O'Neal. Prior to this, I've been working as an art/creative director on a wide variety of projects for companies like Udon, Capcom, Marvel, DC, Mattel and Warner Bros. on properties like Street Fighter, X-Men, Robotech and Thundercats.

What does your daily routine look like?My daily routine involves reading up on news to wake up, sketching to warm up, and then pretty much a lot of production work involving design and illustration, mixed with customer services and other business-related stuff. After work is over, it's pretty late, so I'll finish off the night with some video-gaming before bed.

Tell us about your big dreams. Where do you want to go and what do you want to do?I think I've travelled quite a bit, but I do eventually want to reinvent some of my older comic work into something that utilises everything I've learned over the past 15 years working in the industry. Do you face any struggles in achieving your dreams? What’s the scariest thing about them? The biggest struggle for me is finding the time. As with any passion projects, the scariest part is the not knowing part, as you are trying to fill in the blanks. Also, it is pretty scary to try to do things you're not good at. Oftentimes, people rely on what they do best instead of learning to do something new. For me, it's about finding the time to learn and practice new things.

What three daily things can you not live without? My workstation, inspiration, and a snack.

Can you tell us a little bit about how you start the sketching process? Do you visualise things first or do you make a couple of rough drafts before you actually get on with the drawing? It really depends on the project. For instance, on my Instagram (@vostalgic), I've been doing these 15-minute warm-up sketches where my followers can request characters they want me to draw. If I already know what the character looks like, I'll just go and sketch it straight from my head. If it's a character I'm unfamiliar with, I'll look up some references and then have at it. In general, though, I tend to feel out my illustrations very loosely and then continue to refine it as I go.

What do you think are some major differences between Japanese animation and American animation? I assume you mean 2D animation? I'd say most anime is based on manga (comics). Whereas, a lot of American animation is created from a concept made just for that animation. It really boils down to a style of storytelling. I think that the structure of anime tends to have a lot of mini cliff-hangers, whereas American animations tend to have larger arcs. I believe the mini cliff-hangers were born from the structure of manga, in that most manga is broken down into smaller pieces and delivered on a bi-weekly basis through manga collections. It was a necessity to keep a reader hooked whenever they would read that smaller segment. Anime also tends to be more action-based; it's not uncommon for a single fight scene to last more than one episode. Whereas in American animation, most of it is dialogue driven with stories resolved episodically.

How is anime made? Most anime is based on manga. However, that's basically just the concept. Once you have a concept, style guides, world bibles and scripts are written just like a normal TV show. And then the studio does pre-visualisation, storyboards and finally the actual animation work. What impression do you think outsiders (non-animation lovers) have of anime? What are the stereotypes? In America, it used to be that people who didn't get anime thought it was just big eyes, pronounced bodies and over-the-top violence. While anime does include such things, if you just summed it up that way, you'd be missing out on the great characters and stories that a lot of anime has to offer. Why do you love it?I grew up with it. It challenged me to think outside of the box. I love the motion and how dynamic storytelling can be in the medium. Do you consider anime an art form?Of course it is. Anime art is simply one genre of art, much like in the Renaissance times. The "anime style" is simply one of representing characters who are larger than life in a pleasing aesthetic. Sure, anatomy-wise, plenty of things are exaggerated, but that's not much different than what many American comic book artists do every day.

There is something so exciting about dressing up to go for a traditional orchestra, where the ladies are dressed in beautiful ball-gowns and the men look sharp in their pant-suits. The entire experience of people congregating to attend such an event is so novel in today’s day and age. It was a beautiful experience to witness such talented musicians who create good, old-fashioned music without the influence of technology and remixes. What was even nicer was the fact that people still enjoy listening to classical music.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has enjoyed more than 65 years of success worldwide, giving first-class performances of a wide range of musical repertoire with artists of the highest calibre. The orchestra was led by famed Italian conductor Alessandro Fabrizi, who started out by paying respect to the UAE’s national anthem, and then continued on with the British national anthem. Within the concert they also played a medley of iconic pieces including Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.21, Sibelius Finlandia and Barber Adagio. Concertgoers were also wowed by the orchestra’s unique take on pop-cultural favourites such as John Williams’ Jaws: Main Theme, Williams’ Star Wars: Main Theme, Wagner Die Walküre's The Ride of the Valkyries, Pachelbel Canon, and Paul Dukas' The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

One could easily see that the audience were completed transported to an entirely different dimension, where there was nothing apart from them and the music. The audience were also generous with their adulations and gave the orchestra several standing ovations. It was a true blessing for people who enjoyed classical music to come together under one roof and share such a tremendous experience.

April Fools' Day Hoaxesby Constance Bourg

Top 5 Google38

"GOOGLE IS KNOWN FOR PLAYING PRANKS ON its INTERNET AUDIENCE ON APRIL FOOLS' DAY EVERY YEAR."

Every year, Google releases several April Fools' hoaxes onto its millions of users. With so many outlets belonging to the same company, can anyone truly be safe from the Google pranksters? Here is an overview of five of the best hoaxes from previous years.

Google is known for playing pranks on its internet audience on April Fools' Day every year. It is a tradition that started in the year 2000, with the MentalPlex hoax. That year, Google added a new functionality to Google Search to enable users to search by visualisation and mental projection. Soon the jokes multiplied as other Google subsidiaries wanted in on the act. Here is an overview of the top five Google April Fools' Hoaxes of the last five years.

Every year, on April 1, Google announces a new Gmail service. In 2007 that was Gmail Paper. Because, according to Google, “not everyone loves email." The company added a service to its email program that enabled users to request a paper version of any email. The paper version would then be sent to the user by post. Google would print the emails immediately and post them out to users, who could expect the paper emails to arrive in two to four working days.

"A stack of Gmail Paper arrives in a box at your doorstep, and it's yours to keep forever. You can read it, sort it, search it, touch it. Or even move it to the trash — the real trash," said Google. The service was free for Gmail users, although the paper emails would have ads printed on the back in large red letters. Images could be printed off as well, using a special photo paper, and these attachments would be attached to the paper email with a paperclip.

Another new Gmail service, announced in 2008, was called Custom Time. The new function made it possible to send an email back in time. That way, you could still send an email to people if you had forgotten their birthday. You could even have your message show up in the receiver's inbox as “read” or “unread”. There was a limit to custom time, however. No email could be sent to a date before April 1, 2004. The logic behind this was that Gmail didn't exist before this date. Reactions from beta-users were mixed:

“The entire concept of 'late' no longer exists for me. That's pretty cool. Thanks Gmail!"

“I just got two tickets to Radiohead by being the 'first' to respond to a co-worker's first-come, first-serve email. Someone else had already won them, but I told everyone to check their inboxes again. Everyone sort of knows I used Custom Time on this one, but I'm denying it.”

“This feature allows people to manipulate and mislead people with falsified time data. Time is a sacred truth that should never be tampered with.”

On April 1, 2009, Google revealed that the company had been working on an artificial intelligence project called CADIE. After CADIE was “brought to life” in Mountain View, California, the AI, which had the ability to develop on its own, wasted no time in criticising Google's internet browser, Chrome, for the lack of a third dimension.

CADIE immediately announced that it would make a 3D version of the browser available to users. Chrome users could effectively download and install the new browser, which contained a 3D button. To be able to use the 3D function, users also had to print off a PDF file with a cutout image of 3D glasses.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt unveiled big plans for the Google name on April 1, 2010. The name was to be changed to Topeka, effective immediately. The reason for this was to pay tribute to the major of the little town of Topeka in Kansas. Earlier that year, in March to be precise, the major of Topeka temporarily changed the name of the town to Google, in a bid to convince the company that his town was the ideal testing site for its new broadband and fibre-optics project. According to Schmidt, “Even Google recognises that all roads lead to Kansas, not just yellow brick ones." Naturally, Google knew that the name change would have far-reaching consequences. Some of these were:

• Letters to Google would have to be addressed to Topeka Inc.

• Google employees, formerly known as Googlers, would now be called Topekers or Topekans.

• Google products would be renamed as Topeka News, Topeka Talk, Topeka Maps, and so on.

• A Swedish child that was named after Google in 2005 would have to change his name from Oliver Google Kai to Oliver Topeka Kai.

In the US version of Google Search, a new Topeka logo replaced the familiar Google logo for the duration of the day.

On April 1, 2011, Google announced that it was hiring autocompleters. The job was explained as follows: when users enter search terms in the Google Search box, Google provides automatic suggestions, and that is what autocompleters do. Google said that it was looking for people with the ability to predict what users were searching for and who could type at a very high speed. The most important skill for an autocompleter was to be able to think of suggestions as soon as a user starts typing. Google's requirements were:

• Excellent knowledge of English and at least one other language.

• Excellent knowledge of grammatical rules (e.g. parts of speech, parsing).

• Understanding of the search engine space.• Proven web search experience.• Good typing skills (at least 32,000 WPM).• Willingness to travel (in order to provide local

autocompletions) or relocate to obscure places like Nauru and Tuvalu to develop knowledge of local news and trends.

• Certificate in psychic reading strongly preferred: palm, tarot, hypnosis, astrology, numerology, runes and/or auras.

The hoax was complemented by a video containing an interview with autocompleter Michael Taylor. Taylor, who started at Google in 2006, claimed to be able to type up to 34,000 words per minute. He did need a new keyboard about every eight days though.

So, what can we expect this year from the Mountain View bunch? Who knows? One thing is for sure, millions of users will be logging on to find out.

At the tender age of 15, Japanese-based Yoskay Yamamoto moved to the United States. As a self-trained illustrator, Yoshay found his artistic tastes changing as he fell in love with the urban culture of the West coast. Within his work, one can observe blends of iconic pop characters from the West along with traditional and mythical Japanese elements. Yamamoto has learnt to fuse the two different cultural backgrounds together into his work to create a beautiful, harmonious, finished art piece that manages to evoke a soothing feeling. Our team that the opportunity to speak with Yamamoto and learn more about him.

What is your preferred medium and why?I find that making sculptures comes more naturally to me, and with paintings it is a little bit more difficult to get the result that I’m trying to achieve. But lately, I have been spending a lot more time using my paint brushes and so I feel more comfortable with the medium. Also, there are surprising moments with the painting process that are quite satisfying. In the future, I do plan to make some more sculptures with the use of wood, but it is very unforgiving. What I love about paintings is that I can be more spontaneous and it really helps me to discover a place that I didn’t know I could create until the project is complete.

What art do you most identify with?Lately I like and enjoy art with a sense of humour. I also identify with art that puts me in a better mood or makes me smile. I usually tend to over-think my work and so I have been teaching myself to not put too much pressure on myself.

What kind of work is your favourite? It really depends with each project, as every medium has its pros and cons. Lately, I have started to enjoy creating art installations. I feel like it is the best way for me to present my art to the audience, as it allows me to combine all of my skills into one creation. Also I enjoy how the installation can take up the space instead of just part of the wall.

by SAMANTHA GEORGE

Page 45: The Eclectic Issue

What themes do you pursue?I don’t really have a particular theme with my work. I like creating an image that’s somewhere between a dream and reality. I like to incorporate the real, everyday feeling and enhance it with a slice of day dream. I believe in creating something that would put a smile on people’s faces, as that is quite rewarding.

What’s your scariest experience?Asking my fiancée’s parents for their daughter’s hand in marriage. I found that to be the scariest experience ever.

Can you remember one of the first things you drew/sculpted/painted/photographed? What made it memorable?I believe some of my first work was when I was building something using Lego blocks, as that was my favourite toy when I was growing up. I remember spending the weekend in my room with a box of Lego in front of me.

Do you have a favourite artist? If yes, what draws you to that person’s work?I don’t have a favourite artist, but I do admire a lot of deceased and living artists. One of them being Roy Lichenstein, as I have recently read his book and found there to be such an amazing connection with his work and I have become a huge fan of his work.

Noreen Wasti was born and raised in a tiny state called Rhode Island. Later on she moved to the Windy City, Chicago, where she completed her M.S. in Communications from Northwestern University. Once she graduated, she came to Dubai and immersed herself in the world of luxury fashion and worked in public relations and events. At the moment she is currently involved in various different industries such as writing, table styling, hosting, cooking, and entertainment workshops. Noreen, or as her friends, family and fans like to call her, Noni, is obsessed with everything and anything edible and pretty. She loves to cook, entertain, write, travel, design, style and enjoy all the beautiful things of life. It is safe to say that we are all obsessed with her amazing website, which is bright, personal, inspiring and quite helpful.

Our team had the opportunity to speak with the beautiful Noni and here is what she had to say:

What is your comfort food?Fried chicken, of course — that’s the American in me speaking. There’s nothing more comforting than a crispy fried chicken sandwich covered in crunchy 'slaw, slathered in creamy herb aioli on a soft bun. It is quite the indulgence, so I only eat it when I know I truly deserve it, but nothing else hits the spot in the same way!

Who or what are your cooking inspirations? I think inspiration is everywhere; you just need to look for it. Travel and culture is such an inspiration for me in the kitchen. I love exploring food markets and the street food scene in any place I visit, as it is such an interesting experience to see how people use the ingredients that are local to them to create culinary culture and food traditions.

Which part of blogging excites you the most? Storytelling and styling excite me most in the blogging process. I love to tell a story with most of my blog posts, usually relating to a personal experience or my childhood. I think telling a story always makes for a relatable post to readers. I also love the styling aspect of blogging. I’ve always been pretty crafty and love DIY, so setting up beautiful table settings with lush florals, whimsical plates and little creative details really excites me.

Where do you get your recipe inspiration from? The farmer’s market. I am very passionate about local produce and supporting farmers. I grew up in a small town full of farms, where everyone had a fruit and vegetable garden, so that tradition is very important to me. When looking for recipe inspiration, I usually just browse through the market to see what’s local and seasonal and from there it usually falls into place.

Describe your blog in four words. Eclectic, whimsical, rustic and inspired.

What’s the most adventurous dish you've ever eaten? I’ve had deep-fried crickets in San Francisco, wildebeest in Cape Town, and pigeon in Hong Kong.

Tell us a little bit about yourself?I was born in Casablanca, Morocco, and after I completed my undergraduate degree at the Lycée Lyautey, I went to study at Nice, a business school that specialises in luxury marketing. That took me on an adventurous journey to the fashion capital, Paris. I wavered between la dolce vita, the frenzy of the city and learned to juggle different lifestyles.

I have worked in the marketing field for years, and have always been interested in all artistic, creatively oriented companies. I love to paint, which is a gift from my father, who is a wonderful abstract painter.

At what age did your passion for fashion begin? My blog, Fashion Bakchic has been a wonderful experience and after two years, I felt the need to do more. I wanted to incorporate all of my various inspirations, such as traditions, Morocco, its complex culture, and mix it all up to create something unique and special. Mainly I just wanted to see the reflection of all these ideas on a concrete platform, and being a fashion lover for years, it was simply obvious that I needed to launch my own brand and line that was personal to me. It has been three years since I started my own fashion blog and it was a great desire to bring forth the beauty of Moroccan couture from the old past into the spotlight.

What is your favourite piece of clothing wear?My Berber clutch is such an easy-going item, she never seems to complain on how many accessories and little details she is surrounded by!

Are there any types of clothing that you avoid wearing?I have always encouraged an interest in experimental fashion, which means that I don’t avoid wearing anything. I never stop trying new items as I believe in testing and experimenting and not having boundaries within fashion.

What do you wear on a daily basis?I am trapped in the complex obsession of the perfect simple outfit, which includes a simple white shirt, blue jeans, topped with attitude.

What is the feel and look of Bakchic?Bakchic is the expression of a personal identity, incorporating a culturally rich heritage mix and the raging feel of a contemporary look. This is what I would like to call Berberhemian — also known as Bohemian Berber.

What are you fascinated or inspired by at the moment and how does it feed into your work? The past inspires me, I have always found it to be a good challenge to resurrect it and bring it forth in this day and age.

Do you have any advice for our readers? There is something about the human spirit that just instantly recognises art and creativity, so if you recognise something within you that seems easy and natural, and that just seems to flow, then go ahead and jump on it.

What can one say about the Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan? It is one of the jewels the country possesses. Nestled high up in the mountains of the central Taiwan, Sun Moon Lake is located in the Nantou district — the only province with no access to the sea. To reach this part of Taiwan, we had to travel for about four hours from Taipei, driving on mountainous, serpentine roads that took us up and down the lush, green hills.

Sun Moon Lake is the national pride of Taiwan, with hotels and bed-and-breakfast houses scattered all over the shoreline. It is believed that the name comes from the visual appearance of the lake, with the east part of the lake resembling the sun while the west resembles the moon. In the middle of the lake is Lalu Island, which is holy to the Thao tribe — native folks to the area. Legend has it that the Thao hunters were chasing a white deer that led them to the lake.

Aside from the history and culture of the location, one is simply struck by the beauty of the lake, irrespective of the time of the day; due to the relatively humid climate, the Sun Moon Lake is often covered in a layer of mist, giving the whole area an eerie sense and appearance. There are many attractions around the lake, which include a cable car that hangs over 1,000 metres in between the mountain tops, providing riders one of the most beautiful views on the island of Taiwan. Another exciting fact is that there are plenty of small shops where visitors can buy gifts and other useful items before they head out of the area. What we liked the most was the Xiangshan Visitor's Centre, which is an architectural marvel which could be described as a contemporary building that effortlessly blends into the nature that surrounds it. The centre offers visitors a

breathtaking view of the lake while one casually enjoys their coffee, or purchases something from the gift shop, or even entertains himself by watching an educational video, which showcases the area and its heritage.

One of the biggest impressions we were left with was how dreamy the Sun Moon Lake was. After speaking to a few locals, we found out that many couples come to get married or spend their holidays together. The views one could get at the hotels were quite spectacular, which can be sweetened up by a complimentary morning lake tour offered by most of the hotels. The tour itself is a great experience as it involves people walking around the lake while the tour guide passionately tells the story of the lake and the Thao tribe that had initially settled in the area and brought people to the shores of this natural marvel. Additionally, a boat tour around the lake is available, where one gets to experience the calm waters of this mountain lake.

In the end, Sun Moon Lake left a beautiful imprint on us and we cannot wait to go back there and experience it all over again. Apart from being exceptionally clean and safe, the lake is, first of all, a tranquil experience that many of the city folk seek. The calm waters, fresh air, beautiful buildings and genuinely kind people are all travellers need when visiting a new and unfamiliar place. All in all, if you are looking for an experience to let your mind wander and body be at peace, Sun Moon Lake is definitely a place to visit.

The daylight breaks again Another day has begun.

But still no sleep has come. My body is weary

My mind overworked. I lie awake thinking

But what I am unsure. I need to break free from the cycle I endure.

Everyday is the same and the nights are undistinguished. I feel as though I am being pushed along with the tide

Unable to break free from the everyday flow. This is not me I need to change, before time takes over

And I am unable to change. I need to be freed from the grasp of ordinary

And become that person I have always longed for. Express myself in every way, and conquer the dreams as I lie awake.

Then I may fall asleep and put my mind to rest. Make changes in my life and help those in need.

I would like to touch everyone's life in a positive way And leave my mark on society before I fade away.

52Golf is a great game — sometimes rewarding, often frustrating but highly addictive. Getting started with it is actually not so difficult, and hopefully this article can help you avoid some of the common pitfalls.

To help you get started, we decided to speak to one of the best, and got in touch with Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, which is the Middle East’s premier Golf resort. We spoke to senior PGA professional Michael Kinloch, who has been playing golf since age 12 and was happy to share with us the fundamentals of the game. What is golf all about? The main aim of golf is to hit a ball into a hole with the fewest possible shots. The first shot on each hole is played from a teeing area with the ball usually placed on a plastic or wooden peg. The rest of the hole consists of a mixture of long grass called rough or a closely-mown stretch of grass known as the fairway, which leads to the green, where the hole is. There can also be additional features like sand, lakes and trees. Golf courses vary in length and difficulty; many courses are around 6,000 yards long and take between three and four hours to play 18 holes. This involves walking for about five miles. Some people prefer to ride on a golf cart instead of walking when they play.

How many golf holes are there? There are normally nine or 18 holes on golf courses. Besides the number of holes, all golf courses are different. Some are long and very challenging, while others are shorter and are less difficult.

How does one choose a golf club? Each golf club has a different design so that with the same technique, the golf ball can potentially travel a different distance depending on which club is used. The club is mainly selected based on the distance from the ball to the hole.

There are 3 main types of clubs that are used in a game:

The putter — This is a straight-faced club designed to role the ball along the ground and into the hole from a relatively short distance. Most commonly used when the ball is on the green.

The woods — These are the longest clubs in the set and designed to hit the ball the furthest distances. Some professional golfers can hit a wood approximately 300 yards.

The irons — There are normally nine irons in a set and they vary in length and face angle so that they hit the ball at different distances. They are shorter than the woods and are for playing approach shots to the green.

What does one wear to play golf?A collared shirt with pants or shorts is most suitable for men. For ladies, a polo shirt twinned with tailored shorts, pants or a skirt would be ideal. Proper golf shoes can also be worn. These contain soft spikes or a “built-into-the-sole” tread design that help the golfer stay balanced during play. You may also choose to wear a hat to keep the sun off your face.

How does one keep score? What are the total points you can receive?Unlike most sports, in golf, less is more. For example, a score of 72 is way better than a score of 102. A round of golf is played over 18 holes. After each hole, you should record how many shots it took you to finish the hole. You then mark this amount on a scorecard. A lot of the time, a golfer makes contact with the ball but it misses the hole. This still counts as a shot. On the other hand, if you take a practice swing and accidentally hit the ball, it doesn't count. Every time you take a swing at the ball, therefore, it counts as a stroke. Your score is the number of strokes it takes you to complete the golf course.

How long does one need to practice?Like most sports, the more the better! It’s a good idea to take some lessons when you start playing to help practice the correct technique. Even the best golfers in the world take lessons regularly. With the drive to improve your game, golfers can reach a higher level and one day even be able to compete with professional golfers.

The horse carriage lookalike vehicle was dropped and cars developed more diversity in style, which was accompanied by more colour choices.

The colours blue, green and red were introduced, giving a brighter set of choices.

1920

56

The concept of colour being used for personal taste was born following the economic boom of the Roaring 'Twenties, following WW1, which increased the demand for automobiles. But the Model T remained black.

1930

Car Colour Wheel by Miral Bushnaq

Automobile production came to a halt as WW2 broke out and people were forced to produce military cars that came in dark shades that lacked chrome and embellishment.

1940

The regeneration of interest in automobile production sparked again with the introduction of style being reflected in aspects of adventure, success, post-WW2 euphoria and fashion. Colours were then produced to cater to the detailed features present in cars. Among them were blue, green, gold, white, and black, as well as two-tone and the effects of ivory and jewels.

1950

One of the ways people express themselves is through their possessions, and so we have chosen the second most expensive purchase that people make: which is their car.

Apart from the type and even the make of the car check out the history and evolution of car colours.

This decade saw the popularisation of increasing health standards and being environmentally conscious, hence earth tones began ruling the market for car colours.

1960

Traditional colours such as black and red were increasing in popularity.

1980

This period gave birth to the very popular SUVs and family-oriented cars, which were portrayed in monotone colours. It also saw the continuation of the environment-conscious earth tones that were established in the 1960s.

As performance grew to be a gruelling achievement, red, green and blue cars were highlighted as less conventional in order to stand out, as well as yellow and violet, which made their way onto the list.

First of all, let us just put it out there, cooking healthy is actually quite challenging, especially if you are looking for

food that is flavourful, healthy, and nutritious.

There are way too many “healthy” cookbooks that use weird ingredients such as artificial sweeteners and fat-free dairy,

which are not actually healthy at all.

After reading Giada De Laurentiis' Feel Good Food, we know for a fact how fun and creative her recipes are, as they are

filled with great flavour combinations. And we love how she creates her own twist on the classics. Instead of printing

the standard Miso/Ginger-Soy Salmon that a lot of the diet cookbooks tend to include, she came up with the Grilled

Salmon with a Pineapple and Avocado dressing, which has the crunchiness from the seared salmon, the sweet and

tanginess from the pineapple, and the creaminess from the avocado dressing.

Giada sticks to her standard recipe style, which also seems to incorporate slightly sweet, tangy, or crunchy components

to them. We love how she loves adding fruits, citrus zest/juice, and toasted nuts into her dishes, which we truly seem

to enjoy as it adds a freshness and lightness to her dishes. Another interesting fact about the book is how De Laurentiis

has taken the time to include a combination of proteins, carbs, and fats in her recipes. We absolutely love how her

recipes are bursting with healthy grains, veggies, and lean protein. Combine that with a low-fat yet creamy dressing,

the tanginess of fruits, and perhaps a bit of crunch from the vegetables and nuts, and you have a "wholesome" meal that

is bursting with nutrients and flavour.

All in all, we would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone who is interested in healthy cooking and who

wouldn’t compromise on flavour and enjoyment.

I am Malala is a tragic yet wonderful biography about a young Pakistani girl by the name of Malala Yousafzai. Within the book, Yousafzai sheds light on her life from a young age, and readers can truly see how much her life changes throughout the story.

The book takes place in Pakistan, specifically Swat Valley, where it goes from a peaceful valley into a blazing war zone. Bombs seem to be routinely dropped on schools and houses, storefronts are marked from bullets, and the town square seems to be littered with dead bodies. Swat Valley is an arid desert and place filled with fear and uncertainty, but Yousafzai still seems to miss it. It is shocking to see how, even at the end of the book, she still seems to have a soft spot for her hometown, despite the atrocities she and the city has experienced. Towards the end of the book, she tells the readers that she migrates to England, but most of the story is set in Pakistan.

Yousafzai is a very brave, young girl, who is strong and never seems to break down, no matter the situation. Despite the fact that she was shot, she didn’t keep silent to the injustice that was experienced by her people. We were truly inspired by her to not give up on our dreams and have the courage to try at the least. Her story is empowering and lets you know that, if you really believe in something, you should never allow anything to stop you from achieving it, not even a bullet.

Even though we picked the young readers edition, Yousafzai doesn’t sugar coat the story and maintains the gory details and violence that she experienced in Pakistan. That being said, the entire book is extremely stimulating and will definitely keep you turning the pages. Even though bad things do happen during the course of the book, we couldn't wait to find out what happened next. There are death threats and mass murders, but if you can handle that, the book will be worth the read. Like all readers, we do like when good things happen to great people, and the fact that the book has a happy ending for Yousafzai teaches young adults that you can achieve anything you put your mind to.

The book is this generation’s masterpiece and will surely be cherished for the long haul.
