I was certainly relaxing in the armchair watching some excellent Cricket from Newlands over the weekend much to Jane’s annoyance. A couple of excellent fun sessions for the Colts and mums and dads arranged by Jackie between Christmas and New Year with about 35 attending both sessions, There was some adult mixed run arounds as well and Chunky had the 1 st team working off Christmas excesses on Saturday as well. Training started again this week so no excuses for not getting some action. Well its back to action after a 2 weekend break from hockey well it is for the Ladies section and the 2 Men's Vets sides but the Men's South League rests so it’s a few friendlies before that kicks off next Saturday. There are still 6 tickets left for the 6 a side finals at Wembley on Sunday 31 st January please book with me as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Looking forward to the 2 nd half of the season ambitions are a mix of Promotion aspirations, consolidation and survival for the 14 teams. It's all about fine margins and small steps so make sure you attend that training session in the Winter when the weather is poor if you do and your opponent stays at home that may make all the difference on the Saturday. My sporting Christmas involved the elation of the Saints winning 4-0 against the Arsenal then losing 2 games way they should not have, Saracens continue to steamroller teams and England put on a splendid performance at Durban and at Newlands for 2 days. Watching (and boy did I watch it all) Stokes and Bairstow hit a 399 run partnership was probably the best 3 hours of sport I have seen since Super Saturday at the Olympics. See you in the bar. Match Reports Past Masters v St Albans Saturday 19th December Won 4(1) - 3(0)

. . . Nail Biting Finish to the Year The PM’s visit to St Albans was strange, very quiet and surreal before the game; but it was the only one on. A perfect antidote to Xmas shopping for the 11 who made it up to Oaklands College on this balmy winter/spring day, where there is never an easy game especially when they have a squad of 14. We lined up with something like our normal formation, with the ever flexible Vijay filling the vacant slot of RH, seems a captains lot is a strange one having played in most positions at some stage this year. The opening exchanges were dominated by the PM’s carrying on from last week and moving the ball fluently through the midfield and opening up the home defence on several occasions, but the forwards hadn’t tuned their radar into the location of the goal at this stage. After 8 mins though, all was forgiven when, a rampant Lloydy turned the clock back for the opener. 1 – 0 to the good guys. But St Albans were not going to be a walkover and started to gain a foothold in the match with probing runs down the flanks and some good forward play up the middle. One such attack saw the ball shelled into the D, where Dave almost comically laid the ball onto the CF’s stick, only for him to miss the easiest chance of the game so far. Having survived that lucky call we then had to defend some short corners, but having succumbed to IG the other week we now had it sorted and once more Gavin, Harry, Graham and Sukhi looked secure and composed. The 2

nd quarter was a very open affair with Lloydy, Buddy

and Dogra all going close and our own short corner routine not yet clicking into gear. St Albans were now very much in expansive mode and creating good chances of their own and Dave had to make a couple of last ditch saves to keep the lead as did Graham covering many yards and popping up in the D on 2 occasions to rob a lone forward of the ball. Half time was approaching and we were still pushing for our 2

nd and again Dogra

made the telling pass into the D for Buddy to latch onto. His pass found Lloydy whose shot was stopped on the line, the rebound came out and the ball was put away but the umpire ruled it was now 35mins and 2 secs into the half so we only had a single goal for all of our efforts of the 1

st half.

The second half began disastrously. From the 2

nd phase

of a short corner the home team found an unmarked player on the back post and then a minute later a through ball found another unmarked player 5 yards out and although Dave stopped the first shot, the rebound went straight back to the forward who gratefully accepted the 2

nd chance. So on 35 mins we were nearly 2 up and now

after 37 mins we were down 1- 2. Not looking like a good omen and possibly the result of the host’s mince pies and port for half time refreshments. St Albans tails were now up and the PMs needed to steady the ship, this called for all hands to the pump and

The EastcoNet 3 9th January 2016

everyone knuckled down for the next 15 mins to repel the marauding home side. But weather the storm we did, with Pali blocking out the ever threatening winger, Sukhi getting stuck in, Gavin and Harry stepping in to pick up any ball not hit with perfect accuracy to their player’s feet, and Vijay rolling back the years and performing all roles down the right side of the pitch.

Once the game was on a more even keel we pressed forward ourselves and a beautiful move involving all of the midfield starting and ending with Graham, but along the way involving “L”, the ever present pivot Dogra, Buddy and Lloydy evened the score at 2 – 2. Game on again.

The game was now end to end and the next score could prove critical, unfortunately for the PMs our defensive short corner routine was breeched after 65 mins for the home team to take a somewhat lucky lead. The intensity was now stepped up with both sides being fully committed to getting a result. Our hard work was rewarded when we got it perfectly right from a short of our own. Buddy injected to Dogra who draw the runners, slipped the ball under his arm to Lloydy who smacked it emphatically into the net to draw level with 10 mins to go. What a great advert for the PMs the next 10 mins was to prove to be: gritty grafting Graham (having taken a brief spell on the sidelines) was everywhere picking up the ball and distributing it decisively, the ever elegant “L” was playing with superb control and composure in the holding role, always giving the defence an option and protecting the ball until support arrived, versatile Vijay was athletic beyond his build and years, striding the pitch like a colossus, glorious gallivanting Gavin stepped in for every ball and no one passed, Herculean Harry was nowhere to be seen in defence and his added presence in the middle allowed us to dominate, the perfect protectionist Pali was the defensive rock (now) and closed out their danger player giving them no options going forward, silky Sukhi was every linking perfectly with the deft indefatigable Dogra and the legendary Lloydy on the left, Dogra was as ever solid never wasting the ball and always taking 2 defenders out of the game, the belligerent bewildering Buddy came alive on the right and tormented their defenders with wide runs and great close control, and so the final whistle went and after a frantic frenetic action packed 10 mins, it was still 3 – 3. But wait the PMs had been given a short, the ground went silent, Buddy injected to Dogra who drew the 2 runners before slipping it to Lloydy on his left (we’d been here before today) but Lloydy didn’t have room for a clean shot, so shimmied and wriggled and got within 3 yards of the goal. Finally he shot, but having scored 2 goals already, he put the ball onto the defender’s foot (so cool under pressure). More drama, as now into the 37

th

min we had a flick. Up stepped the ever reliable Buddy and with the last touch of the game secured a brilliant, hard fought and much deserved win for the PMs. Sweet revenge for the non-goal at the end of the 1

st half.

So definitely our most spirited performance of the season with everyone contributing hugely to an entertaining and enjoyable game, including the 14 man St Albans squad. This week the MotM could be awarded to any number of players, such was the contribution of all 11 players, but for keeping the score down to zero in the first half and a

couple of key stops in the second, this week’s MotM goes to Dave.

quickly. As manager of the England over 65’s who have just won European Gold at Southgate let me share with you one of our secrets, that could benefit all of us who play or have played sport. It would in fact benefit anyone with issues around back pain, arthritis, and/or lack of energy. We have been supported by “Xenca“ for the past 4 years who have recommended two products to us and which the majority of the squads are using. I swear by them. The first is Collagen and the second Five a day + V. Both are natural products. If you have a club member in the squad talk to them about it.
