description
East Cleveland Way was published in 1983 by the Women Live project as a follow on from their 1982 anthology Village Verses, located in the coastal village of Skinningrove, known for it's ironstone mining and steel production and being a 'model village' built by the Peases. East Cleveland was an area of high unemployment and social change and the anthology, which includes men and women, reflects that. The project was supported by Community Arts worker, Doff Pollard of Village Arts and the work chosen on the basis of inclusiveness rather than judgement. During the editing of this volume, the project was apprached by the production team of Broadside, an all-female current affairs film company who had a regular spot on Channel 4. They wanted to use their activities as a central focus for a film about Umeployment in East Cleveland screened in June 1983. The antholgy includes some of the national feedback to the film and also contributions from the local school in Loftus.
