The East Asian Semiotic Seminar October 27-29 1992- Wuhan, China The East Asian Semiotic Seminar was held at Hubei University, the host being Li Xian Kun of the Department of Political Science of this University. The sponsors were the Chinese Association of Logic and the Japanase Association for Semiotic Studies. The members of the Organizing Committee were as follows: Zhao Jing Zhao, Vice-President, Hubei University; Li Xian Kun, Department of Political Science, Hubei University; Hyakudai Sakamoto, Aoyama University, Tokyo; Ni Ding Fu, Institute of Philosophy, Chinese Academy of Social Seiences (Vice-President, Secretary-General, Chinese Association of Logic); Wang Wen Qing, Chairman, Department of Political Science, Hubei University; Wang Wei Xian, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Hangzhdu University (Member of the Board, Chinese Association of Logic); Chen Zong Ming, Zhe Jiang College of Administrative Science (Member of the Board, Chinese Association of Logic) The invited speakers were: Jerzy Pelg, Hyakudai Sakamoto, Gerard Deledalle and Elisabeth Walther-Bense (the latter unfortunately detained by prior commiti'nents in Stuttgart). The working languages of the Seminar were Chinese, Japanase and English. Trans- lation and interpetation from and into english were expertly assured by Li Xiang Kun, also of Hubei University, and in Beijing and Wuhan, Zhang Dun Min (Secretary on Foreign Affairs, Institute of Philosophy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences), effi- ciently organised the stay of the foreign visitors. The general theme of the Seminar was: "The Meaning of the Culture of the Chinese Characters", but many other related semiotic topics were also examined in the papers read. This Seminar being the first international meeting of the kind organized in China, there was naturally much discussion about the future of semiotics in ' East Asia, and the possibilities of wider international cooperation. ln the course of meetings, formal and informal, before and after the Seminar, and during the cultural visits kindly organized by our Chinese hosts, there was ample time for these discussions, and many occasions for the foreign participants to appreciate fully one of the most important aspects of the Seminar, destined, in Li Xian Kun's words "to deepen the understanding and academic friendship among the scholars from different countries".
