President’s Message - Fall 2007 By Floyd Jaehnert, EFR 34

In my Summer 2007 Presidents report, I alluded to a donation of 2 Model N Ford cars and/or parts. Mr. Richard Oswald of Denver, Colorado was kind enough to make the offer predicated the Early Ford Registry taking legal possession. Mr. Oswald also asked that the

Restoration Committee Report – The Richard Oswald Model N Donation By Jerry Van Ooteghem, EFR 95, Chairman, Restoration Committee

After 2000+ miles of travel the parts generously donated by Richard Oswald are resting in their original home; the Ford Piquette Plant, in Detroit. A group of eager volunteers from the Piquette T's car club along with T-Plex volunteers unloaded the trailer full of NRS goodies at the historic plant. Mr. Oswald's prized stash of model N parts now reside on the third floor of the building where the NRS story began over 100 years ago.

T-Plex, the organization that owns and operates the Piquette plant as an automotive history artifact, is more than delighted at this "homecoming". While they have a beautiful Model S Runabout currently on site, a Model N has been a much sought after item for display, even in its current state.

Pursuant to Mr. Oswald's wishes, a Model N will indeed emerge from the mass of parts he has entrusted to us. So, what progress has been made towards that goal? Recently, the best available engine parts were culled from the collection, roughly assembled and shipped off to Floyd Jaehnert, who has a willing volunteer that has offered his time to rebuild the engine. What looks to be a decent transmission was also sent to Floyd for his evaluation. Also stepping up to the plate is new member Norman Bolz who has agreed to work on the chassis.

The Model N is now back where it started. More

than 100 years after it built, it has been returned to

the third floor of the Piquette plant. Here the

frames, axles, wishbones and wheels are ready to

be restored and re-assembled.

being inventoried and loaded for their trip to Piquette

in June.

Restoration Committee Report – The Richard Oswald Model N Donation (Continued from page 3)

So, what else is needed? How can you help? While Mr. Oswald was very fortunate in some of the items he was able to accumulate, he was not able to procure every last piece needed to build a car. We've all been there. Most notably, there are two transmission frames and they both are well short of being usable. We have the option of buying a new one. As you NRS guys know, they're excellent quality but not exactly free. If anyone has a usable frame that they could part with or if any individual or group would sponsor the purchase of a new frame we would be well on our way to achieving our goal of a running, driving Ford Model N. In addition, anyone who is expert in the rebuild of NRS rear axle assemblies could also be of great help to the project. Remember, The Early Ford Registry is now a 501(c)3 and any monetary donations are tax deductible. Please give some consideration as to how you could further this worthy project. Think of it, after 100 years, another "new" Model N Ford will emerge from the Piquette plant. To those who have already stepped forward; thank you very much for your support!

donated Model N parts await examination and

restoration. While we are missing some parts,

there are other items in excess. Jerry and his

committee will make decisions about what parts to

use in the Model N, what parts to use in setting up

an “assembly demonstration area”, and what to

do with the extra parts. There is work for

everyone. Please call to volunteer your expertise.

History of Ford Model N #3096 by Irvin Haisch, owner

created by William Haisch, Web Application Developer

I first saw the Ford N about 30 years ago when I took the pictures at the Ford garage in Ponca, Nebraska. I never expected to have a chance to buy it, but it was put up for public auction on December 13, 1998 at Laurel, Nebraska which is about 6 miles from where I live. The family of the original owners lived across the section from where I live.

Bill Weiersheuser was at our farm to see a Gade gas engine once owned by his father John Weiersheuser. I purchased the engine from John's daughter, Lydia Weiersheuser. When I got the Gade gas engine, the piston was stuck, but I got it restored and running. Bill mentioned they had a 1905 Ford N in storage at Ponca, Nebraska.

I believe John Weiersheuser to be the original owner of the Model N, as that is what his son, Bill, told me, but I can't be sure as there is no title to trace. The four children of John Weiersheuser are now deceased. None of them ever married so there was no immediate family that wanted to keep the car.

Kevin Peters, the local parts manager for John Deere in Wayne, Nebraska, used to sneak upstairs and play in the old Model N when his dad brought him to Ponca. The car was kept upstairs at the Ford dealer and used for local parades. Kevin was about five years old at the time. Kevin is now 47 years old now so that would have been about 1965. I guess that is why the upholstery is in such poor shape. ;-)

Phil and Pat Knerl, owners of the Ford garage in Ponca, identified the persons in the parade photos, but they did not know the name of the dog.

These two pictures of the Model N were taken 30 years ago when it was in storage above the Ford garage at Ponca, Nebraska.

The Directors positions due for election this year are held by Dave Dunlavy, Floyd Jaehnert and Harold “Hap” Tucker. They were responsible for the reorganization of the group about two years ago.

2008-2010 Term

Three of the following members will be elected to The 1903-1909 Early Ford Registry, Inc. Board of Directors for the 2008-2010 term. A ballot will be inserted with the next issue (Volume 5 Issue 4). Please vote for three (3) candidates – no more. Ballots marked with more than three (3) names will not be counted. The names shown here and on the ballot are in the order drawn in a random drawing.

Paul Mikeska and his wife Abbie live in the Denver, Colorado area. Paul is the Director of Maintenance and Construction for Elitch Gardens Theme Park. Model Ts have been a part of Paul’s life from an early age. At 10 months old, he learned to walk hanging onto a Model T block. As a child, Paul spent summers with his uncle who is an avid Model T hobbyist. At the age of 13, Paul learned to drive a Model T and drove it well before a standard car. Paul is a member of the Model T Ford Club of America, Model T Ford Club International, and the Early Ford Registry. He currently owns a 1926 Model T Coupe, which makes weekly runs around town and down to the local ice cream parlor. Also in his collection and being restored are a 1917 Model T Speedster, a 1907 Model R, a 1923 Model T Roadster, and a 1924 Model T Touring.

Dave Dunlavy and his wife, Bev, live in Decorah, Iowa and enjoy meeting and working with people in the hobby. They have attended and hosted several tours and organized the first EFR tour held in 2006. Dave is the current Secretary-Treasurer of the EFR and webmaster of the internet pages. Some of Dave’s interests are to get youth involved in the hobby and to promote research and preserve heritage of the early Ford Automobiles. Dave is active in the MTFCA having served on the Board of Directors and currently is the contact for the Vintage Ford on CD Project. He has restored several automobiles including an award winning 1910 Model T. He has been an independent computer consultant for 27 years.

Steve Gordon This craziness with working and restoring old cars started in 1962, when I attended an antique car show and knew right then that I wanted to buy an old car. In April of 1963, I bought a 1930 Model A Ford Roadster. To me, cars are part of my family. I still own the Roadster today. I sold my business in 1978 and have been playing with old cars and Blanche (my wife) since then. Blanche is also involved in the hobby as an editor for our local AACA Region and the Antique Electric Car newsletter. We presently own a large collection of various years, makes and models, including 13 brass era cars. My oldest Ford is a 1910 Model T Tour-about. I am presently looking for an earlier Ford, but I always hear about the one that was just sold. I have put on a Chrome Glidden Tour, a Horseless Carriage National Tour, a Horseless Carriage convention, a Glidden Tour® with 357 cars and 800 people, and an antique electric car tour with ten cars and 25 people. I am presently the

senior board member of the Horseless Carriage Club; vice president of the Antique Electric Car Register; president of our local AACA Region (Pecan Region). I have served as a director of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America, the Horseless Carriage Foundation, the Southeast Rod and Custom, and president of the Palm Beach Region AACA. I arranged for all the antique cars for Disney World’s grand opening at Buena Vista, Florida. I believe that the Early Ford Registry must go after members and not have to rely on new members coming to us. I have the time, commitment and knowledge to serve as a board member of the Early Ford Registry. I have many friends across the country and would appreciate your support.

Harold “Hap” Tucker - I’ve been involved with antique cars all my life. My Dad and Mom purchased our 1907 Model S Runabout back in the 1950s and I was sort of there – Mom was pregnant with me. And I’ve grown up around the S and T’s we’ve had over the years. As a teenager – I sort of strayed into “fast cars” and purchased a couple of 1928-31 Model A Fords. I am very interested in helping to document and preserve the cars and their histories for future generations. I have enjoyed serving in the past and I look forward to helping our group continue to grow and serve our current generation. I also want to help preserve and pass along the cars, parts, and information to the next generation of owners with a personal goal of helping to put more of the cars back in reliable touring

condition.

Floyd Jaehnert - I became interested in collector cars after reading an article

in Popular Mechanics magazine in Junior High School about a man that restored a 1925 Model T Roadster. I purchased a 1918 Model T Ford in 1960 and joined A.A.C.A. shortly thereafter and have had continuous membership to the present. I have served in several positions in the Capitol City Chapter of the Minnesota Region A.A.C.A. including its President. In 1987 and 1988 served as President of the Minnesota Region. I have been a member of the Twin Cities Regional Group H.C.C.A for some 10 years and served as a board member for 6 years including 5 as its President. I joined the N.R.S. group shortly after its formation and assumed the position of President during the transition from the N.R.S. Group to the Early Ford Registry. Another area of interest is the New London to New Brighton Old Car Run and am currently on the board of directors for that event. My wife and I currently own a 1908 Model S Ford, a 1912 E.M.F. Touring, the 1918 Model T, a 1941 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet and a 1963 Studebaker Avanti.

Nicholas Fintzelberg (Nick) - Retired museum curator and college professor and enthusiastic antique car collector. I joined the Horseless Carriage Club in 1951 while in High School, and bought my 1911 Brush soon after. I can say that I “Grew up in the hobby” and in these 56 years I have owned several dozen cars and belonged to most of the national car hobby clubs. I have learned a lot about what makes an organization a success or a failure - - enthusiasm and willingness to work. I favor clubs that go driving. Although, I am a Pebble Beach judge and master judge in several clubs, touring is the real test of a restoration. My 1906 Ford “N” has been on several thousand miles of tours in the US and Australia. My ‘credentials” are: Past-president Classic Car Club of America; regional president of HCCA, AACA, R-ROC, & CCCA. Past-president of San Diego

Historical Society, San Diego Automotive Museum, SOHO (conservation antique buildings) and California State Historic Park/Old Town San Diego.

Also, John Biggs in England and I here in the US each have a supply of new Heinze coil box porcelains for sale. These have been made available by John and non-US customers should purchase them from him. In the US, they are available from me or from Lang's Old Car Parts in MA: 1-800-872-7871. In order to keep costs down as much as possible, they were made with a slightly different thread, necessitating a new brass (male thread) fitting which is supplied with the porcelain.
