Troop 157 Eagle Court of Honor & Awards Banquet“Leadership, Honor, Commitment”

Zachary Taylor Coke was born in Lubbock, Texas on December 31, 1991 . He is the sixteen year old son of Jason and Shala Coke . Zachary has two younger siblings; Caleb (5) and Natalie (15months) .

Zachary began his scouting journey in 2004 as a 6th grader when he joined Troop 157 . During his time with the troop, Zachary has participated in many camping, backpacking, and educational trips with the scouts . Additionally, he joined the troop at Lake Murray for Scout Camp every summer, and has worked as the waterfront director last summer . At summer camp in 2007, he was tapped out for the Order of the Arrow, and attended his ordeal later that year . This past summer, he proudly took part in the 62 mile hike at Philmont Scout Ranch, making many special memories . Throughout his time with Troop 157, Zachary has had many great opportunities to grow . He has been a patrol scribe, a quartermaster, an assistant patrol leader, a patrol leader and a senior assistant patrol leader . Zachary has already demonstrated a level of responsibility and purpose that is uncommon in today’s youth . Over the last several years, he has spent a great deal of time and energy working toward the rank of Eagle Scout . It was not always easy, or fun, but it was always a priority for Zachary . He demonstrated his character and determination in the pursuit of his Eagle Scout advancement .

Zachary’s Eagle project was done at Oakwood Methodist Church . He turned an empty, overgrown area between two buildings into a playground for the two year olds at the preschool . He planned, organized, and executed the project very effectively, and the end result was quite impressive . Tilling up the land, leveling the dirt to prepare it for sod, laying the sod, assembling the play equipment, and building a gate was an all day challenge . With the help of several troop members, family and friends it was a job well done . The church members were very thankful for the new playground, and have already put it to good use .

Zachary is a good student who takes his grades seriously . He attended Monterey High School for 9th and 10th grade, and regularly made the Honor Roll . He took several honors courses, and was able to maintain an A/B average throughout . His family recently moved to Frisco, TX, so he has moved to a new school, Wakeland High School ., and is off to a wonderful start . Zachary is also active in his church in Frisco where he helps run the lights and sound for both Sunday morning services . Additionally, he is always willing and eager to lend a helping hand, and has already volunteered to help with many church events .

Along with school, scouting, church, and family obligations, Zachary has worked at United Market Street since the beginning of this year . In the time he has been employed with United, Zachary has gained the respect of his supervisors, and routinely receives special assignments . Since moving to the store in Frisco, he has already impressed his new managers, and has helped to train some of the newer employees .

As a junior in high school, Zachary is starting to think about his future . He is planning to attend Texas Tech University, and would like to go to medical school . For some time now, Zachary has been interested becoming a doctor, and he knows that many of the lessons and skills he learned as a scout will assist him in this pursuit .

Zachary and his family would like to thank the many people who encouraged him in his journey to Eagle . Specifically, we would like to thank Scoutmaster David Bentley, Scoutmaster Brad Payne, and the many adult leaders in Troop 157 . Your dedication and support in helping young men reach their goals are greatly appreciated . We can not thank you enough for helping Zachary grow as a young man and meet his goals as a Boy Scout .

Paul Glasheen is the 15-year-old son of Kevin and Elaine Glasheen, brother to David (19) and Katharine (17), and host brother to German exchange student Carolin Bosche (16) .

Paul is a sophomore at Lubbock High School . Paul’s siblings are Lubbock High Westerners, as was Paul’s grandfather Ralph Brock, a 1933 graduate . Paul is in Varsity Choir, Latin, Karate, and Mock Trial at school .

Outside of school, Paul is an accomplished pianist . He has earned many First Place ribbons in piano contests, and many medals on the annual Theory Test . Last year he earned First Place in the Concerto Contest, and was accompanied by his former choir teacher Debbie Russell Gelber . Both Mrs . Gelber and Paul’s piano teacher William A . Murphy have given Paul the inspiration and opportunities to accomplish so much with his music . Paul has accompanied the O .L . Slaton choir, played the piano for church services, and played at a friend’s wedding . For his first job, Paul is a piano accompanist at Ballet Lubbock . He regularly brightens the lives of those around him, especially his grandmother Pauline Brock, by playing the piano whenever family and friends gather .

Paul joined Troop 157 in 2004 . He has attended summer camp at Lake Murray every year, and he was on staff this year in the Indian camp . He has gone on many campouts and backpacking trips, where he has learned valuable lessons about being responsible and taking care of himself . He has held various leadership positions, and he is currently ASPL . This summer he went on his first Philmont trek, along with his dad and his fellow scouts . The trip was a great success, and a memorable experience . Paul’s brother David was a Conservationist at Philmont this summer, and he was able to hike part of the trail with Paul and Kevin . These shared experiences that test and build character, and create the bonds, friendships, and memories of a lifetime, are the ultimate achievement of Scouting .

Paul was inspired to become an Eagle Scout by his grandfather Ralph Brock, his brother David, and his fellow scouts in 157 . Paul’s grandfather earned his Eagle Scout at the age of 13 in 1929, and he loved to tell stories about his scouting experiences .

For Paul’s Eagle project, he planted live oaks and red oaks along the driveway at the St . Francis Mission Sisters’ convent . He also installed a drip irrigation system to water the trees . Over the years, he will be able to see his project grow .

We believe Scouting has contributed a lot to make Paul the person he is today . He is an empathetic person, which shows in his kindness toward others . Paul is a keen observer of people and the world around him . He has a quick wit, great insight, and a unique ability to concisely sum up a situation . Paul’s insights are often both amusing and enlightening .

Paul greatly appreciates the adult leaders of Troop 157 who contribute so much of their time and talent to make scouting a great experience . Their friendship and mentoring are a great and positive influence . To everyone who has been involved in helping Paul along this path, we are grateful for your generosity and caring .

Paul, your family and friends are so proud of you and your achievement of the rank of Eagle Scout .
