Domestic gas price hike:A pinch in the pocket

The recent hike in the price of domestic gascylinder along with the rise in prices of es-sential commodities like food grains, fruitsand vegetables have depressed the sentimentsof the masses. Ironically, even those welfaresectors which are considered noble and es-sential like education and medical facilitieshave become far too expensive, crippling eventhe average middle class families. To some extent, the rise in prices is unavoid-able due to varying demand and supply situ-ation vis-a-vis rapidly increasing populationin India. Unfavourable weather conditionsalso result in price hike. Further, lack ofwarehousing facilities, cold storages also re-sult in the post harvest losses. However, more than anything else, the major reasonfor rising prices is lack of any timely effec-tive measures taken by the government de-partments to check malpractices of unscru-pulous traders who create artificial shortag-es and charge exorbitant prices. Moreover,in India, inflation or price rise is not just aneconomic concept but they are also a politi-cal tool, often used by the opposition partiesto launch attack on the ruling government.Today, to provide even the basic education totheir wards has become a Herculean task foran average man. It has become almost im-possible for many parents to muster the hugesums which are often demanded as donationsby many schools. In the face of strict ordersby the government, the word donation hasnow been toned down and new words like ‘de-posits’ or ‘charities’ have been coined whichultimately mean one and the same thing-drain of finances of the common man.Similarly, over the past few years, the pricesof medicines have steadily gone up, while themedical facilities have woefully deteriorat-ed. Even for the treatment of common ail-ment quite a large amount is spent on med-icines while the treatment of deadly diseas-es will soon become the privilege of very few.A slight rise in prices is not a bad thing. Itaccounts for the growth in economy rise inemployment, better scales for workers etc. However, sudden and acute rise in prices caus-es an all-round spiral effect on prices thatmakes the life of common people miserable. There is a rippling effect resulting in an over-all recession, sluggish economy and blackmarketing. It is high time that the government plans aregular and an effective system of maintain-ing control on rising prices of at least essen-tial commodities and life saving drugs, tooffer some relief to a common man from thisincreasing burden of rising prices. Partiesafter parties assume power with a pledge tobring an end to the spiralling prices as theirmain electoral plank. But so far, none seemto know the reason or have done anything inthis regard other than blaming the previousgovernment for the unfortunate price situa-tion. If prices of essential commodities con-tinue to rise unchecked, it will not be longbefore a large section of the society will findtheir place below the poverty line graph.

Recently I was inter-viewed for the mostburning topic that isloneliness and depres-sion. The first querywas that why has thisincreased so much inthe current generation.

My reply was thatin the ever growing pop-ulation, we are gettingmore isolated than com-ing together, we aremore depending on gad-gets than our near anddear ones, we are moredepending on medica-tion than meditation,we are looking for hap-piness in things andmaterialistic thingsthan in the inner pow-er.

Also a major shifthas been in our con-sumption of food. First,we went to food, nowfood comes to us. Foodis one of the biggest sub-stitute for many peoplewho fulfill the loneli-ness and depressionwith food. But not forall.

The best way to stayaway from these twokillers is to do the fol-lowing

1. Endorphins are

Loneliness andDepression- Not for us

Failure of the government in curbing riotsDear EditorMOS Home's statement that Delhi riots that erupted on Sunday was

a planned Conspiracy to defame Modi Sarkar in front of Trump is notjust deplorable but infact exposes the ministry's failure. If the ministrywas aware of this conspiracy why didn't it act to prevent it, especiallywhen Trump visit was on, or did he admit that it was an intelligentfailure?

Why was BJP leader Kapil Mishra not arrested and booked underPSA for warning of trouble even in front of police officers. Incidentallyriots broke out hours after this threatening speech.

Letter to the Editors....

Remarkable bowlingtalent of

Ravichandran AshwinDear Editor,Ashwin proved himself and finished as

the decade's highest wicket-taker. Indiaspinner Ravichandran Ashwin has fin-ished the decade as the highest wicket-taker in international cricket with564 wickets across all formats. Only 33, this man has already won thecoveted Arjuna Award in 2014, was the ICC Cricketer of the Year and TestPlayer of the year in 2016, and the CEAT International Cricketer of theYear 2016–17. And this is not even the full list.

Well, this is India’s top off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, whose jour-ney to success and fame is nothing short of inspiring. Born and broughtup in Chennai, Ravichandran found his calling for cricket at a young ageand was inspired by his father who played at the club level as a fastbowler. He started as an opening batsman only to graduate further to abrilliant bowler—both medium-paced and off-spin— and finally an all-rounder.

From his debut victory with a Ranji trophy at the age of 20; to secur-ing a solid spot at IPL in 2010 as part of Chennai Super Kings (CSK); tomaking a World Cup debut in 2011, Ravichandran has come a long way.Ever-humble, he attributes his success to the support he received fromhis parents and his teachers.

According to Ravichandran, his career began to take a positive turnafter he joined the St Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School andbegan training under school coaches CK Vijay and Chandra. Later, whenhis career began to soar with his Ranji Trophy victory, he found moresupport from his faculty at SSN College of Engineering, where he wassimultaneously completing his BTech in Information Technology.

Many faculty members from SSN recall how Ravichandran would per-fectly balance his studies with his cricket career. The college, meanwhileextended full support to him, with scholarships, extra classes, flexibleattendance etc. He would be allowed to attend classes at least one day ina week and received help throughout to keep up with the course work. The teachers, however, never spared him the hard work, and it is thisacademic rigour that helped him learn essential qualities of discipline, perseverance and improvisation.

In college, he is still remembered as the boy who led SSN to manyinter-university wins. But, one of the most inspiring attributes of Rav-ichandran was his ability to bounce back from any failure whatsoever.Every downfall was an opportunity to aim for a greater height- somethingthat he learnt in college, amid other things.

Founded by Shiv Nadar, chairman of HCL Technologies, in 1996, SSNInstitutions are striving to make a positive difference in society by im-parting education to students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. From the curriculum to the faculty, every stakeholder is invested in notjust creating bright and well-placed engineers, but future leaders. And so,even after getting a well-paid job, Ravichandran decided to follow his pas-sion and focus all his attention on cricket. Owing to that decision, he soonemerged to be one of the leading youth icons in the Indian cricket scene.

In 2017, playing his 45th Test, Ashwin became the fastest bowler topick up 300 Test wickets, breaking Dennis Lillee’s record, who had achievedthe landmark in 48 Tests. In October 2019, in his 66th Test match, Ash-win became the joint-fastest bowler, along with Muttiah Muralitharan, totake his 350th Test wicket. Yet amid all this, what sets him apart is hissincerity as a student and his passion and uncompromising professional-ism as a cricketer.
