The cost is £10 (heavily subsidised by our Active Living grant). The coach will depart from TMH at 8am PROMPT on 7th October, leaving London at 16.30 in order to miss the rush. It will be a long day but an enjoyable one, I'm sure. T & F MOVIES AT THE MEMORIAL HALL The June show concluded our programme of films for 2013/2014. A new monthly programme will commence on September 26th and a very interesting selection of films is currently being planned. The Memorial Hall Management Committee would like to thank everyone who has supported the films during the year and made the evenings both pleasant and successful. Audience numbers have varied (of course) but have averaged around 50 which is comfortable for seating purposes and ensures that costs are covered. We are fortunate that our local distributor Moviola has good relationships with the major national distributors and can obtain feature films either at the same time as cinema chains or very soon thereafter. Moviola also provides us with "shorts" for each show - a format sadly neglected by the big "multiples". The Committee would very much like to keep the film shows going in the months and years ahead, but we do need your continuing support. So, if you haven't already, why not give it a try and substitute the big screen for the small. Films start at 8pm (doors 7.15) at TMH. The cost is only £4 and there is a bar and raffle too. TATWORTH PLAYING FIELDS Run by the community for all to enjoy The recent AGM has brought about some changes in the Tatworth Playing Fields Management Committee with Sue Drayton and Keith Marks standing down as chairman and secretary. The committee would like to express its thanks to them both for all of their hard work and commitment to the playing fields over the years, and wishes them all the best for the future. After a very successful Rally which attracted a large number of people from a wide area, we are now preparing for 'Party in the Park' on Saturday 9th August and hoping for good weather. The start is at 5pm. Tickets are £5, children are free if accompanied by a paying adult. This years bands are Ian Kenna, Blue Room Baboons and The Bastardos Brothers. There will be a Hog Roast, BBQ and inside and outside bars, also great raffle prizes. We look forward to seeing you there. And finally - Bonfire Night will be on Saturday 8th November 2014. TATWORTH AND FORTON PARISH COUNCILJubilee FieldDrainage work will start alongside the allotment site in earlyAugust when it is hoped to establish a water supply for theallotments. Once this is done the fencing and development ofthe allotments can move forward.

There was a road traffic collision on the A358 whichdemolished the new gate and some of the hedge on theboundary of the southern field. This has now been repairedand was paid for by the driver’s insurance company.

The remainder of the two fields, that are not planted withtrees was cut for hay in July.

The Council is still exploring the possibilities for thedevelopment of the field with our architect.

Maintenance in the ParishSouth Somerset District Council’s Parish Ranger scheme iscarrying out routine maintenance of our assets around theparish.

These items include bus shelters, seats, notice boards and thecupboard and shed in Tatworth Cemetery. The seven busshelters in the parish are cleaned every two months by theOperations Dept. of Chard Town Council.

HighwaysSpeed limits – Somerset County Council’s HighwaysDepartment are conducting speed reviews on the A358 and theB3162 and B3167. We hope that this will result in theextension of existing speed restrictions.

The “20’s Plenty” petition supporting a 20mph limit inresidential areas in the parish was sent to the Highways withthe request that this possibility is looked into.

Further investigation is needed on this because expensiveengineering work such as road humps may be necessary inplaces.

TATWORTH WIVES GROUPHester Down writes:

At our June meeting Ellie Langford related the story of heradventures exploring the Alaskan Islands in the late 1960’s,and illustrated her talk with slides she took at the time. Hervisit took place about a decade after Alaska became the 49thState of the USA in 1959, following its purchase from Russia in1867. She and a friend flew to New York and drove acrossNorth America, through Canada and on into Alaska toAnchorage.

They first visited Kodiak Island where they hoped to find workin the canning industry, but because no work was availablethey travelled around the islands, staying in cabins providedfor those who wished to explore the area, and living off theland. She particularly noticed the effects of the formerRussian influence, such as the continuing presence of theRussian Orthodox Church. Sometimes they were strandedbecause of severe weather conditions before they could moveon again. Eventually they were able to return to Kodiak Islandwhere they found work as they had originally planned beforereturning home.

There was no meeting in July, but as usual we had a stall atthe Church Fête in the Tatworth Playing Field where we soldbags, each of which contained a surprise present. We wereagain blessed with good weather this year (notwithstandingthe threat of showers earlier in the morning when we weresetting up), and we had a steady flow of customers resultingin a contribution of £141.00 towards the total raised forChurch funds.

Our next meeting will be at Tatworth Church Rooms onThursday 4th September when our speaker will be PaulineMatherick who will give a talk on Manna Puppets.

FROM THE INBOXA Selection of emails from Residents:

Visitors to Chilson Common – Dawn Wyatt writes:

As a resident of Chilson Common and having this year taken ontwo rescue pups, my focus has been very much on the use ofthe lane by other dog users. I would appeal to people walkingdogs anywhere to pick up their animals waste. There arehealth, legal and environment factors that make this veryimportant, to say nothing of the social niceties and reputationof dog owners.

Always carry poo-bags and clear up after your pet. Also, nowthe dangerous dog act has been updated, dogs must be undercontrol and not behave in a threatening or out of controlmanner towards humans or other animals. It's theresponsibility of dog owners to ensure their pets aren'tintimidating or hostile, as this spoils the enjoyment of otherwalkers or dog owners and is actually illegal.

Scam Calls and Bogus Callers – Marion and Steve Slyfield writewith the backing of Action Fraud (Police):

We have been inundated with SCAM CALLS, the number wehad ringing was 0019853281157, so rang 0845 4040506 andasked to be put through to Trading Standards who took ourdetails & gave us a reference number, also advised to contactother services including Telephone Preference 0845 0700707.

The main person we were advised to contacted was ActionFraud (Police) 0300 1232040 who in turn advise the City ofLondon Police. Each report gives them more cases to helptrace them and evidence to work with Police outside ofEngland, hopefully ending in prosecution.

Both Trading Standards & Action Fraud say they will ask a fewquestions.

If you receive any calls and you report them, this is whatwould be helpful to compile a case:-

• Name of the company they say they are representing• Name of caller• Ask for their telephone number (they will probably

give a false no.)• Then hang up. Do not touch/open your computer • Ring 1471 and write down the number

I hope this will help you in fighting these people to stopbothering us! Each phone call is a criminal offence of fraud.

Thefellowship consists of about sixteen people who meet on thefourth Tuesday of each month at 2pm in the Kents CommonRoom for informal prayer and hymn singing and a short talk,by Mary Dewar, Rev Terri Boyland or Rev Tim Price. After theservice we generally go out to tea at a nearby café when theweather is nice. In the winter we have tea, cakes and chat atKents.

TATWORTH & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETYKen Johnson writes:

The long dreary winter which stretched into spring has faded, for most of us, into our memories and we have been blessedwith a good percentage of warm / hot sunny days and longsummer evenings.

August will herald the ending of summer and as the year fadesinto autumn usually provides the best month in the allotmentand time to harvest the fruits of our endeavours. It is thetime to start tidying up the plots and gardens before theharder work of preparation for the next year of activities anda time for swapping production 'excesses'.

Society members and friends enjoyed the June half day trip toYonder Hill (not the one down the way) near NewtonPoppleford - quite an unusual garden but very interesting.

The July trip took us to the Water Garden and Nurseries atLongstock near Andover. This trip concluded our summer 2014outings schedule and it is now all action towards the 54thAnnual Open Show to be held at Tatworth Memorial Hall onSaturday 23rd of August 2014 commencing at 14.30 (2.30 pm). This year's guest is the Mayor of Chard.

What wondrous life is this I lead!

Ripe apples drop about my head;

The luscious clusters of the vine

Upon my mouth do crush their wine;

The nectarine and curious peach

Into my hands themselves do reach;

Stumbling on melons, as I pass,

Ensnared with flowers, I fall on grass.

Extract from 'Thoughts in a Garden' by Andrew Marvell.

TATWORTH WOMEN'S INSTITUTE Summary of meeting held on 19th June 2014

Angela welcomed visitors Sheila, Rachel and Ann Preston(trainee WI Advisor). Birthday cards were handed out andminutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The walk in Sidmouth raised £57.10 for the ACWW and themug stall at the Mini Rally raised £75. As there were a numberof mugs left, it was agreed to have a stall at the Church Fete.

Ann gave a report on her attendance at the Leeds Conferenceadvising that the WI as a whole is doing well with many newbranches opening and Wilton Lodge, which had beenstruggling, is now in a much better position. The Resolutionconcerning organ donation was passed.

Our speaker, Ken Roberts, set off from Somerset in 2009, on abicycle made in Somerset, to cycle round the world. Hecovered 20,000 miles and crossed 4 continents. He illustratedhis talk with slides, starting with a map of the world.

Crossing France took 1 month, then on through Germany,Yugoslavia and Turkey where he visited a mosque and theGrand Bazaar. Next Azerbaijan, Georgia and Kazakhstan – ahuge country as big as Europe. When crossing the border fromAzerbaijan into Georgia the locals looked rather scary butwhen he mentioned that he originated from Manchester theybecame very friendly because of knowing about ManchesterUnited. A family gave him a bed for the night and he wasoffered a drink of fermented mare's milk – to be drunk down inone (because of the horrible taste) and which has a laxativeeffect!

Next was China, again a very large country, and where theroad signs were impossible to read. In the Gobi desert manypeople sleep outdoors because of the heat but Ken chose tostay in the truckers' stops which were cheap and basic, buteach bed always had a pristine clean white sheet, no matter

4 www.tatworthandforton.co.uk

Page 5: The Drift Newsletter for Tatworth & Forton Edition 064

how dirty the rest of the room. He said he always felt safecycling in China and noted that KFC's were popular (becausethey serve chicken), more so than McDonalds.

On to Australia where he rode all the way down the east coast– unfortunately it was the rainy season! Finally North Americawhere he covered 3,000 miles cycling from Alaska down thecoast to Mexico.

After all that travelling with no mishaps he fell off his bike inthe snow on the way back from Peterborough to Somerset andbroke some ribs. He has yet to tour South America and Africaand says he would like someone to come with him next time, preferably a woman. Although we really enjoyed his talk, no-one from the WI felt able to volunteer!

On Monday 4th August at 2.00 we can try our hand at Curlingin the Tatworth Memorial Hall – should be fun!

The meeting on August 21st is a craft meeting starting at theearlier time of 6 pm to allow each member to try two crafts. We were asked to choose from Candle Decoration, CardMaking, Necklace Making and Crochet. Shoe Boxes – we havebeen asked to produce boxes for girls aged between 16 and 24years.

County Skittles competition – is anyone interested in makingup a team of 6 to take part?

The WI Exercise Group (based on Tai Chi principles) whichmeets Friday mornings are looking for a few new people, whodon't have to be WI members.

A talk by Michael Portillo on 25th October should provepopular and names will be taken.

The enjoyable evening ended with delicious refreshments.

ART IN 17TH CENTURY EUROPEAn Art History Lecture CourseSara Harcourt writes:

Art In Seventeenth Century Europe is the subject of HendrikaFoster's course to be held in the Seavington Millenium Hall thisyear, a secret we should like to share with art historyenthusiasts.

She says "In 1600, Rome was the centre of European art.Bernini designed a large part of the city, establishing theBaroque style of architecture and sculpture. Caravaggio, therebel, challenged traditions. Rubens took the Italianinspirations back to the Netherlands in his paintings. Spainwielded world political power and Velasquez would create astyle of art to exemplify it." She will also offer us something ofvan Dyck, Rembrandt and Vermeer.

We meet on ten Monday mornings from 6 October to 8December from 10.45 to 12.15, and pre-booking is essential.
