The Drift Thank YouThis edition of The Drift has been sponsored by an extremely generous donation from the Tatworth Women's Institute. We are most grateful to the WI, and repeat our plea for other donations, however small, to keep the publication going in the future. Each edition costs almost 200 and sponsors will be able to call on The Drift to provide space for their message, which might be to celebrate a special occasion or simply to publicise something. If you would like to make continued publication possible, by sponsoring an edition of The Drift, advertising, or simply donating towards it, please contact our treasurer - Nick Bernard on 01460 220339.

This is an opportunity for all Tatworth and Forton residents to hear what has been happening to our various projects over the past 10 months and to discuss any future ideas. Every resident of Tatworth & Forton is invited to attend. TATWORTH AND FORTON PARISH COUNCILParish AdministrationMr Justin Robinson, Parish Clerk, has recently been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the Somerset Association of Local Councils, the advisory body for Parish and Town Councils. A person holding this post may not work for or be a member of a Local Council and so Mr Robinson had no alternative but to resign his post in Tatworth and Forton. We wish him every success in his new position. The Council has recently appointed Mrs Teresa Pinder as his successor. The Councils devolved administration is still in place with Councillors with areas of special interest assisting the Clerk with different aspects of the work.Jubilee FieldThe Council hopes to carry out some ditching and drainage work on the land later this year in preparation for further initiatives.Street LightingAt the request of the Parish Council, the Council has received confirmation from the Highways Lighting Team that the part night lighting scheme is due to begin in this Parish the week commencing 23rd September 2013. In order to reduce the environmental impact of street lighting, they will be switched off between 12 midnight and 5.30am, when vehicles and pedestrians are least likely to be present. This approach will reduce energy use, carbon dioxide emissions, light pollution and the impact on local ecology. In the near future, the Council will deliver a questionnaire in the Linkhay area to ascertain how many residents would be in favour of street lighting if funds become available in the future. The questionnaire will be delivered by hand to all houses in that area. However, we would remind residents that it is unlikely that there will be any funds for such projects in the foreseeable future.Public TransportWe regret to inform residents that, despite its popularity, the number 14 bus service, running between Thorncombe and Chard (the green bus) and funded by Dorset County Council is scheduled to cease to run from 18th January 2014. We will be making representations on behalf of all those, including disabled and elderly who cannot walk the sometimes half mile distance to the number 30 bus stops and who depend on this green bus service.TATWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOLNew Report for the New Term!Head teacher David Knight writes:We are all well back into routine at Tatworth Primary School. We have a record 226 children on roll and are in the middle of a very busy term. Highlights will include the popular Storyteller, Spellbinder and our Christmas productions. Tickets will be available from our School Office. As usual we will not be charging for tickets but will be collecting for a local charity. We have a hard act to follow; last year parents and friends of the school helped us to raise a staggering 1660 for Somerset Sight! Undoubtedly a major highlight for many is our annual visit to Cricket St Thomas on Wednesday 18th December with the older children, a day we all look forward to. This is the tenth year of this special link set up by Richard Martin. Long may it continue!TATWORTH & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETYI love to wander through the woodlands hoary,In the soft light of an autumnal day,When summer gathers up her robes of glory,And, like a dream of beauty, glides away.'October' by S.W. Whitman.A big 'Thank You' to all who supported YOUR 53rd Annual Open Show, at the Tatworth Memorial Hall, on the 24th August 2013, with your entries, assistance and your attendance on the day. The Show was successful both financially and as a spectacle.October is the month of the year when there is a noticeable nip in the air and often ushers in the first frosts of the forthcoming winter, so remember the fleeces etc. In the gardens and plots, growing has slowed down and one has more time to continue to harvest apples, pears, etc. together with squashes and autumn and winter root crops. Pumpkins come into their own and provide dual uses both as food and as Halloween lanterns. It is the time for warming soups and roasted vegetables. October is also the time for some spade work in turning over any heavy soils compacted over the summer and this provides one with the chance to remove remaining perennial weeds. Without moving into any detail, November entails the continuation of works commenced in October.Herewith a list of our Autumn 2013 and Spring 2014 evening meetings which are held at 19.30, on Thursdays, in the Tatworth Memorial Hall:201310th October'Creating a Butterfly Garden' -Martin Young.14th November'Somerset Gardens' with music - presented by Tony of FadingImages.12th DecemberAGM followed by a light-heartedquiz and 'bring and share' supper.201413th February'The History of Gardens' - John Horsey.13th March'Propagation Part 2' - Neil Loveseyof Picket Lane Nursery.10th April'Growing Your Own' - a 'Gold Club'speaker - topical tips on growingyour own vegetables.Membership of the Society is still only 3.00 per person per annum. All outstanding value!October is a piper,Piping down the dell-Sad sweet songs of sunshine-Summer's last farewell,He pipes till grey NovemberComes in the mist and rain,And then he puts his pipe awayTill Autumn comes again.'Autumn Song' by Margaret Rose.Ken Johnson ChairmanTATWORTH WOMEN'S INSTITUTE Report of meeting held on 15th August 2013President Angela Long welcomed members, husbands and visitors to the open meeting. Names were taken of all those interested in going to the Carol Concert at Wells on the 11th December.Jane suggested that instead of a Christmas lunch this year, would members prefer to go to the Octagon Theatre to see 'Miracle on 34th Street', on Saturday 23rd November at 7.30pm. at a cost of 14 plus about 8 for the coach.Angela asked members if anyone was interested in helping to set up a croquet club. Several names were taken for those wishing to become involved. The County Quiz at the Golden Fleece was won by Tatworth and the team were congratulated! Angela then gave a very warm welcome to Dr. Francis Burroughes, director of the Bedminster Bristol Blue Glass factory, to give a talk on the 'Wonderful World of Glass.' He was a very amusing and humorous speaker, who gave us an abbreviated history of glass making from the very earliest glass beads made from obsidian, a dark glossy rock, made several million years ago, examples of which he passed round to his rapt audience. He then handed round many other beautiful bowls, dishes, and wine glasses and an outstanding silver decanter holding 3 blue glass bottles. He admonished members to please try and not to drop anything, as this had happened at a WI meeting when someone broke a handle of a 1,000 year old jug. He went on to say that it takes 7 - 15 years for a glassblower to become expert in his trade, so you can understand that any ancient surviving glass is very precious. Dr Burroughes invited us to visit the factory where we would be made very welcome.Jean Cockram gave the vote of thanks, and said what a most enjoyable and amusing talk he had given, after which members and visitors enjoyed a most amazing array of refreshments.Eileen LukerTATWORTH PLAYING FIELDSRun by the community for all to enjoyWe have been unsuccessful in getting any help from the Parish Council to replace the burnt out rubbish bin by the school entrance and, unfortunately, we are finding that people are using our facilities to dump their rubbish. Recently we have found large bags of household food, garden waste and dog excrement; for these items please use your own household bins/dog bins and NOT THE LITTER BINS IN THE PLAYING FIELDS. If this continues we may have to consider doing away with some of the bins. Thank you for your help in maintaining our playing fields so that everyone can enjoy them. Our next Bingo is October 25th, November 22nd and Christmas December 20th. All eyes down 7.30pm. Our Bonfire and Fireworks are on Saturday November 2nd from 6.30pm. Come and bring your friends and help us with the upkeep of our facilities.Keith Marks, on behalf of Tatworth Playing Field Management Committee.WALKING MATTERSSunday 17th November - An Autumn RambleMeet up at 10am at the shop on Dyke Hill for a walk of 4-5 miles on quiet lanes and footpaths going to Westford Park Farm, Holditch Lane and Headstock Road.Friday 27th December - Walk off the Christmas Pud!Meet up opposite Perry Street Club for a circular walk of the parish of 4 to 5 miles going to Forton, Paradise Lane, Burridge Cross and Parrocks Lodge. Please wear strong footwear and bring a drink and (if you want) a small snack. SHOEBOX APPEAL 2013Marion Slyfield writes:In the Februarys edition of The DRIFT I wrote to thank everyone for their support for the 2012 Shoebox Appeal, it is now the time that we are thinking of 2013.By the time this is going to print the organisers will have sorted out the warehouse and other details to get things under-way ready for the November collections from around Somerset.Thank you to those that have already given items or made items in readiness for this year or who have inquired of what they can do to help. At this time of writing I do not know the destination of the Shoeboxes, but our District Co-ordinator has specified to Samaritan's Purse that it should be a 'cold' country as so many people are knitting hats & scarves, also donations of gloves. I know all the items that are given will be greatly appreciated from the Shoebox Teams to the ones receiving them.If you would like to take part in this years appeal, in any way, from putting together a shoebox, covering Shoeboxes with Christmas paper (top & bottom separate), gathering items for boxes, knitting, making bags or even offering to help in the warehouse or in the van collecting around the countryside whatever your help, it could be as little as 1 hour in the warehouse, it will be most welcome. For more details about Operation Christmas Child, Samaritans Purse, offer of help to wanting a leaflet please call me (Marion) on 07813 358 530 between 6pm-9pm or Peter on 07583333408.THE EXERCISE CLASSTakes place at TMH on Wednesdays 3:30-5:00pm note new times.FORTON COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION SEPTEMBER REPORTWe have been busy all summer with various fundraising events. These events included a Barn Dance, Cream Tea Afternoon, Forton Fun Day and a Barbecue at Alpine Grove. All these events were well supported and we were lucky with the weather being good at all events. Our most recent event was the Forton Fun Ride when we had more than 80 horses taking part. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the land owners who kindly gave Julie permission to run the ride over their property. Our next event is a Coffee Morning at Norman and Sue Markbys home at Whitegate on the 3rd October at 10.30 am.Nick Hebditch has said that he will put on a Fireworks Display for us again this year. The date for this is the 19th October at Forton Football Club. The display last year was spectacular so come along and watch. There will again be a bar and barbecue. Look out for the posters with times of the Fireworks or ring me on the number below. Our AGM will be held on the 24th October at The Old Barn, Forton, home of John and Sue Adams. If anyone is interested in joining our committee please let me know.Andy Cottey Chairman 01460 67002TATWORTH GOOD COMPANIONSThe Christmas Dinner will be at The Otter Inn on Thursday 12th December. PERRY STREET SOCIAL CLUBThe monthly big quiz has changed from its usual last Saturday each month, to the last Friday in each month. In the bar we have Stuart Michaels singing on Saturday 19th October, and Ruby Tuesday on Saturday 21st December. Saturday 9th November is cabaret night in the main function hall, featuring a Rod Stewart Tribute Artist and comedienne Jennie Robins. Tickets 10.00 each prior or 15.00 on the door.Jenny Scott - Club SecretaryIN PRAISE OF THE SOUTH CHARD PREMIER STORE & POST OFFICEIn a special interview with Russ Wardell, one time Parish Council Chairman Des Barge voices his concerns about the village store and how much he values it:I want to tell the people of this village just how good the shop is, and how they treated me says Des. I'm disabled and partially sighted, and they take my order, and everything I want, they deliver it to me if I want it in the week, I just ring up and they bring it up in the evening. About prices, Des went on I find that they're very competitive with the supermarkets you can get meals down there, you can get whatever you want. And if they haven't got it, they'll try and get it for you. I want to tell the people of this village how good they are. The hard work that we put in when I was chairman [of the Parish Council] to get the shop, you can't jeopardise that. And if the shop goes, what are we going to do? If you want something, well you're going to have to go to Chard for it.Asked how important he thought the services provided by the store are, Des said I think use it or lose it one of the two. They are so good to this village and so necessary. I think people have to wake up to the fact that you're going to have to use them. Des is aware that there is something of an upheaval nationally in the Post Office and that there is a danger that the days of the services provided in South Chard may be numbered. Many thanks to Forton's local beat officerDesiree Leete writes from Exeter about a scam suffered by her relative in Forton:Would it be possible to print a thank you (and a warning) in The Drift concerning the superb service I received recently, when I had to contact the police about a cruel scam involving an elderly relative? The circumstances were these. I routinely phoned my relative who told me he was expecting to have to pay out thousands to builders who had cold-called him and volunteered to pressure wash his bungalow roof.
They produced a flashy card stating Dirty roofs devalue your house, and they also promised to use a magic potion which would keep the roof clean for ever. A price of 300 was agreed. They then got him (he is 85) to climb up a ladder and showed him alleged rotten timbers and damp etc, which convinced him that his roof was about to fall about his ears.Unsurprisingly they had been very pleasant, discussed issues close to his heart and had managed to get access to his house by the oldest trick in the world of wanting to use the loo. I was unable to convince him they were clearly crooks so in desperation phoned your Somerset Police. The person who took my details could not have been more helpful and a neighbour told me a police car had arrived in 10 minutes. They were able to contact a local builder who demonstrated the crooks had caused roof damage. We were kept fully up to date with happenings and the next day a police presence was lurking when the crooks returned. Needless to say the Uplyme address that H O' Neill had given did not exist and their van was registered to a travellers' site in Northampton. The police have now published an alert about these cruel crooks but it left my relative several hundreds of pounds poorer. So, many thanks indeed to the police and in particular to Officer Ben Samways. Thanks also to my relative's neighbour who photographed the crooks and their van and gave the photo to the police. She knows who she is.
