We will have lecture notes for sale as well, detailing most of the magic shown. This is not a lecture to entertain magicians like many other lectures do. This is usable magic that entertains lay people. It’s not fancy knuckle busting magic. He does only a few card tricks on his restaurant shows. He quickly entertains them, collects a tip and moves on. Most of the magic has no reset time which is important when moving among tables. His magic allowed him to travel to Hawaii, South America, Germany and Japan. All attendees at this lecture will be able to walk out with tools he teaches to work anywhere.

Oct. 7th: Windy & Sunny Douton Nov. 4th TBD, Election of Officers Dec. 2nd Banquet

The summer is coming to an end, our friends from "up north" are returning and the Ring 81 events calendar will be full. One important local event will be a benefit magic show for Rachel and Aldo Colombini to be held at 7:00 p. m. on Friday, October 8 at The Houdini's Showplace Magic Dinner Theater. I encourage all Ring 81 members, guests, and friends to support this wonderful show. Please note that all proceeds will go directly to Rachel and Aldo Colombini. For those who may not attend the benefit show, a special collection will be offered at our October meeting. I wish to thank Joe Floersheimer for his initiative, on short notice, in sending the membership of Ring 81 a flyer advertising the event. Lastly, I want to assure the membership of Ring 81 that the main magic show that will be performed by the Carmen's at our December 2nd Ring 81 Banquet will be a different show from the benefit show for the Colombini's. Our guest lecturer team for our next meeting, Sunny and Windy, will certainly spark a nice beginning to the fall season. Also upcoming for the New Year will be guest lecturer, Joshua Jay, who was the featured close-up magician at the annual International Brotherhood of Magicians Convention held earlier this year in San Diego, California. In addition to the lectures at meetings, the other important events facing us are; nominations for Ring 81 Board members, announcement of the candidacy of one Ring 81 member for Honorary Membership in Ring 81, election of Board members, and the year-end Banquet scheduled for December 2nd. Finally, I encourage each of you in Ring 81 to consider either becoming a candidate for the Ring 81 Board or nominating others in Ring 81 to do so. The list of candidates the Ring 81 Nominating Committee will present is by no means intended to hamper nominations from the floor. If you want to run for office, please do not consider it immodest to ask another member to nominate you. The full functioning of Ring 81 depends heavily on having a full slate of qualified Board members.

MAGIC CONTEST REPORT Forty members, wives and friends gathered for our September 2nd Magic Contest, a mystical evening of hocus-pocus and hanky-panky by seventeen Ring 81 magicians. After a brief business meeting and introductory remarks by President Bob Banta, M.C. Al Loeffler opened the proceedings and kept things moving briskly.

Newcomer Wayne Fitzpatrick led off the proceedings with The Great Escape, leaving only empty chains behind. It earned him 1st prize in the Sorcerer's Apprentice category.

In the Amateur category that followed, Thomas Prieto, whose forte is card magic, performed a sneaky mentalist routine he called The Unbelievable Book Test. Believe it. The husband and wife team of Jose & Hillary Reyes amused us all with

their artful antics in Pedazos de Humor Magicos, a comedy magic routine with many neat surprises.

Next up was Bill Smith to do his Acme Instant Assistant. Lo and behold, son Evan in pointy-hat Merlin costume, mysteriously popped up from a box that only moments before was shown to be quite empty. Then his empty bowler-hat, in a bit of knavery, yielded a glass-of-milk, an egg, and finally a bunch of streamers. Huh?

Murgatroyd, The Magic Chicken and Al Loeffler were up next. With the audience providing encouraging cluck-clucks, Murgatroyd cooperatively laid three eggs into Al's hat, one of which was cracked into a glass to show that it was real.

Two audience members were called to the stage to assist Mike Sedita in his card trickery, Sleight of Butt. It was tricky. Robert Nelson, after much

tomfoolery with old props from his college years, then performed an original The Traveling Thimble routine in his characterization as "Madstone, the Comedy Magician."

Vol. 7 Issue 10 Page 4

Next was Joe Floersheimer who won 2nd prize with his wistful musings of a Honeymoon Remembered. Treasured mementos from a small, heart-shaped box were shown. Some cards, along with the very key to room 165 that Joe and his wife had occupied at a time, now only dimly remembered. Some cards were selected at random by two guests from the audience. By some mystification, the cards chosen were – wonder of wonders -- a 1,a 6, and a 5, that same as their room number.. Donald Carlson, a card prodigy of eighteen, displayed mastery far beyond his younger years. He won 3rd prize with a medley of difficult card sleights, performed with ease and skill that obviously impressed the judges.

Jerry Meketon next performed Destroying Money Without Guilt, a new key-thru-dollar effect by Andrew Mayne. Yes, the key went through the dollar, but it was unharmed. Bob Banta, taking us through the mists of time, related the story of conjuror Woo from ancient China who devised the Charming Chinese Coins mystery in which three coins magically melted off a cord on which they were strung. With the assistance of a guest from the audience, Bob conjured the Charming Chinese Coins mystery with charm and surprise. David Pitchford, one of our Masters of Magical Cards, performed a great Poker Routine that had us all fooled. He fairly and openly shuffled, cut and reshuffled cards time after time, all the while sloppily dropping cards hither and thither. After more careless handling, David dealt five poker hands: a full house, a higher full-house, a four-of-a-kind, and a straight flush, each higher than the one before it. To the astonishment of all, the fifth hand, his, was the winning Royal Flush. For it, David won a Royal 1st prize, which ended the Amateur competition.

The order of appearances was chosen by lottery.

Vol. 7 Issue 10 Page 5

Next were four competitors from the Professional category First was Gary Roberts, a corporate comedian, motivational speaker and internationally known magician and illusionist. He won 2nd prize for his performances of A Robbery Trick of his wrist watch, and a Big Kiss routine with jumbo cards. The magic team of Windy & Sunny Douton were up next. For over 40

years Windy has entertained audiences everywhere with fast-paced stuff while Sunny interjects funny, non-stop wisecracks. This was no exception. Their routine was titled Fun Things To Do With Balloons. Omigosh! Never before have I seen balloons do such un-balloon like shenanigans. Balloons whistled, rotated, spun in circles, and exploded in a spectacle of whoopee antics that surprised and tickled us all. I'm still smiling.

Our 3rd prize winner was International performer Ken Chandler who travels the world to baffle audiences with his brand of Mind Blowing Magic. This night he performed Confabulation to prove that a Mentalist can be FUN, also. A prediction was made and sealed. After some gag-filled preliminaries, Ken revealed an impossible prediction -- How does he do that? -- and then finished by reading the thoughts of the entire audience. You hadda be there to believe it. Last was ILAN, who has performed at

hotels and casinos throughout the USA. He performed Clue, a mentalist routine in which his prediction was sealed in a big box given to someone in the audience. Then, from projected screen images of multiple lists, the audience made random selections to create a murder Scenario with the following clues: (a) murder weapon, (b) crime scene, and (c) suspect…all randomly selected. ILAN's earlier prediction was recovered from the big box and opened. His prediction exactly matched all the clues. Was it witchcraft? Obviously the judges were bewitched. They awarded him 1st prize.

We are grateful to the eight judges who graded the competitors. The Amateur and Sorcerer's Apprentice categories were judged by Ken Chandler, ILAN, Russel Douton and Gary Roberts. The Professional category was judged by Bob Banta, Joe Floersheimer, Bill Smith and Wes Meltzer.

It was a fun filled entertaining evening.

"PROFESSOR'S NIGHTMARE" PATTER CONTEST

During the intermission of the Member’s Contest Wes Meltzer introduced the three finalists in the Professor’s Nightmare Patter

Contest. The three finalists performed their routines for the members and the guests.

Bob Banta’s story was of three young fellows who wanted to all be the same, so Bob magically made them so. They soon tired of being so much alike, so he restored them to their former selves. Lesson 1, be careful what you ask for. Lesson 2, be happy to be yourself. Hal Ackerstein came up with his original patter entitled Obama’s Nightmare. Hal incorporated the phrases “Change” and “Yes we can” while manipulating the ropes. Al Loeffler regaled us with The Alchemist and Merlin the Magician. (Long ago in the time of King Arthur, when Al was just a boy.) It was Merlin who came to the aid of Alonzo and helped to restore the ropes. The winner was chosen prior to these performances, by judges who chose the winner on the merit of the Patter only. Hal Ackerstein was the winner and was awarded the prize by the club but will not be receiving a gratulatory message from the White House.

February 5th, 2011 will be the Annual Fund Raiser for our Ring. Once again we will be using the Klinginstein Jewish Center for our matinee and evening performances. This major event, that helps us throughout the year, can not be staged by just a few. We need volunteers who can help in the preparation and the running of the event to make it comfortable and enjoyable for our audience. If you are able to assist please write to:

Al Loeffler at [email protected] or Bill Smith at [email protected]

It is not too early to tell your family and friends to put this date on their calendar to assure your ticket sales for this annual event.

This is your club. Make it what you want it to be.

Dear Fellow Florida Magicians, I'm sure you are aware that Rachel and Aldo Colombini have been working tirelessly performing and lecturing to try and raise the much needed funds for Rachel's heart operation. However, time is not their friend. So we have decided to have a show in which all proceeds will go directly to Rachel. On Sept. 25th, there will be a show at the Ramada Plaza Marco Polo Beach Resort on Miami Beach. (The Same hotel where we had Magic on the Beach) Attached is information about the show, the performers who are donating their performance and how to purchase tickets. The theater holds 500. So if we can sell the show out we could raise $10,000-$12,500 in one evening. So please try to make it to the show. Also please forward this info to every IBM or SAM member, friends and relatives. If you can't make it to the show, perhaps you could purchase tickets and give them as a gift to a friend or relative. I hope you all can join us on Sept. 25th. I promise you will enjoy the show and help save a friends life. Thank you, Rick Del Vecchio 305.992.0703
